The games used will be run at the settings I usually play them at. TrAA will be used where possible with <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">SS<\/span> denoting super-sampling and <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">MS<\/span> denoting multi-sampling.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, the text charts are color coded and <span style=\"color: #ffff99;\">yellow<\/span> means 186.18 is faster, while <span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\">red<\/span> means 191.07 is faster.<\/p>\n<p>nVidia also claims the following performance improvements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Up to 12% performance increase in <em>ARMA 2<\/em> <\/li>\n<li>Up to 8% performance increase in <em>Batman: Arkham Asylum<\/em> with GPU PhysX enabled <\/li>\n<li>Up to 50% performance increase in <em>Call of Juarez: Blood<\/em> in Bound with SLI enabled<\/li>\n<li>Up to 14% performance increase in <em>Fallout 3<\/em> (indoor scenes) with antialiasing enabled<\/li>\n<li>Up to 10% performance increase in <em>Far Cry 2<\/em> (DX9 version) with antialiasing enabled<\/li>\n<li>Up to 34% performance increase in <em>Prototype<\/em> with antialiasing enabled<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019ll be testing <em>Far Cry 2<\/em> today along with other games to see if they also show a benefit.<\/p>\n<p>According to nVidia the 2D clock issue has been fixed, and this driver also fixes the profile issue for me. If you\u2019re still having issues with profiles not taking effect, make sure the \u201cuse the advanced 3D image settings\u201d option is selected in nVidia\u2019s control panel.<\/p>\n<p>Also if you\u2019re having problems with older OpenGL games crashing, try trimming the OpenGL extension string.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:Setup--><strong><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Hardware<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>nVidia GeForce GTX285 (1 GB, reference clocks).<\/li>\n<li>Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 (reference 3 GHz clock). <\/li>\n<li>4 GB DDR2-800 RAM (4\u00d71 GB, dual-channel). <\/li>\n<li>Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R (Intel G33 chipset, F7 BIOS). <\/li>\n<li>Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic.<\/li>\n<li>30\u201d HP LP3065 (maximum resolution 2560&#215;1600).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Software<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Windows XP 32 bit SP3<\/li>\n<li>nVidia driver 191.07 and 186.18, high quality filtering, all optimizations off, LOD clamp enabled. <\/li>\n<li>DirectX August 2009. <\/li>\n<li>All games patched to their latest versions. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Settings<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>16xAF forced in the driver, vsync forced off in the driver. <\/li>\n<li>AA forced either through the driver or enabled in-game, whichever works better. <\/li>\n<li>Highest quality sound (stereo) used in all games. <\/li>\n<li>All results show an average framerate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:Benchmarks--><strong><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Benchmarks<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12039 aligncenter\" title=\"Text\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text.png?resize=317%2C290\" alt=\"Text\" title=\"Text\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text.png?resize=317%2C290 317w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text-300x274.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 317px) 100vw, 317px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12038\" title=\"Graph\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph.png?resize=544%2C467\" alt=\"Graph\" title=\"Graph\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph.png?resize=544%2C467 544w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph-300x257.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 544px) 100vw, 544px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: left\">Interestingly <em>Far Cry 2<\/em> actually sees a small performance drop under DX9. Even more interesting however is the very large performance gain in <em>Crysis Warhead<\/em>. I checked this repeatedly in case AA wasn\u2019t being applied, but it was.<\/p>\n<p>The other games are virtually unchanged.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:Conclusion--><strong><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Upgrading to the 191.07 driver is worth it to get the large performance improvement in <em>Crysis Warhead<\/em>, and also for the bug fixes elsewhere.
