By including a given video card in this review, I\u2019m not necessarily implying it\u2019s either price and\/or performance competitive with other cards in the review.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Introduction<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today I\u2019ll be testing the performance of ATi\u2019s Radeon 5770. This article is part one in the series and future installments will analyze bottlenecking and image quality.<\/p>\n<p>ATi is positioning the 5770 as an upgrade for the 4850\/4770, so the comparison to a 4850 will be of particular interest. Also given the retail price of a GTX260+ is only about $20 USD more than a 5770, a direct performance comparison between the two will also be useful. I\u2019ve also included a GTX285 as a matter of interest because it signifies nVidia\u2019s current single GPU flagship, and because it\u2019s my primary gaming card.<\/p>\n<p>But first, here\u2019s a brief introduction about the card. The 5770 chip is codenamed Juniper (unofficially RV870) and is based on ATi\u2019s second generation 40 nm technology. It adds notable features such as DirectX 11, Eyefinity (multi-display gaming), full-scene super-sampling, and angle invariant anisotropic filtering. In terms of processing power and memory bandwidth, a 5770 is basically a 5870 (Cypress) chopped in half.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the theoretical specs of the four cards I\u2019ll be testing today:<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12444\" title=\"Specs\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/specs.png?resize=331%2C373\" alt=\"Specs\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/specs.png?resize=331%2C373 331w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/specs-266x300.png 266w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 331px) 100vw, 331px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, the two nVidia boards have a substantial advantage with respect to pixel and texel fillrate, along with memory bandwidth. This is courtesy of more ROPs, TMUs and a wider memory bus. In particular, the GTX285 has over twice the bandwidth of the 5770.<\/p>\n<p>The Radeon cards have the advantage in shader processing, courtesy of their Vec5 shader design. Notice that the 5770 is able to get away with only a 128 bit memory path, courtesy of GDDR5. Also at just 166 mm2, the 5770\u2019s die size is positively tiny compared to the other cards.<\/p>\n<p>Of course theory doesn\u2019t always translate into reality, which is why we run gaming benchmarks. The benchmarks have two columns labeled <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">% 4850<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">% 260+<\/span>. They represent the performance gain (or loss) of a 5770 compared to the listed card in that column. If the column is highlighted <span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\">red<\/span> then the 5770 is faster relative to that specific card by that percentage. If it\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ffff99;\">yellow<\/span> or <span style=\"color: #ffcc99;\">orange<\/span> it means the 5770 is slower than the listed card (GTX260+ or 4850) by that negative percentage amount.<\/p>\n<p>Since TrAA isn\u2019t comparable to AAA due to the vendors using different techniques, all benchmarks are tested with it <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">off<\/span>. For more information about this, please see my <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=3188\" target=\"_blank\">image quality comparison<\/a> between the two vendors.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle:Setup--><!--nextpage--><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Hardware<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> nVidia GeForce GTX285 (1 GB, reference clocks).<\/li>\n<li>nVidia GeForce GTX260+ (896 MB, reference clocks, 216 core edition).<\/li>\n<li>ATi Radeon 5770 (1 GB, reference clocks).<\/li>\n<li>ATi Radeon 4850 (512 MB, reference clocks).<\/li>\n<li>Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 (reference 3 GHz clock). <\/li>\n<li>4 GB DDR2-800 RAM (4\u00d71 GB, dual-channel). <\/li>\n<li>Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R (Intel G33 chipset, F7 BIOS). <\/li>\n<li>Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic.<\/li>\n<li>30\u201d HP LP3065 (maximum resolution 2560&#215;1600).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Software<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Windows XP 32 bit SP3<\/li>\n<li>nVidia driver 191.07, high quality filtering, all optimizations off, LOD clamp enabled, hardware PhysX disabled.<\/li>\n<li>ATi Catalyst 9.9 (4850), Catalyst 9.10rc CD driver (5770), high quality mip-mapping, Catalyst AI on standard<\/li>\n<li>DirectX August 2009. <\/li>\n<li>All games patched to their latest versions. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Settings<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>16xAF forced in the driver, vsync forced off in the driver. <\/li>\n<li>AA forced either through the driver or enabled in-game, whichever works better. <\/li>\n<li>TrAA\/AAA disabled.<\/li>\n<li>Highest quality sound (stereo) used in all games. <\/li>\n<li>All results show an average framerate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> <!--pagetitle:2560x1600--><!--nextpage--><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2560&#215;1600<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>First I\u2019ll start with 2560&#215;1600 and test a range of games using up to 4xAA. The first three titles can\u2019t have AA forced under DX9 mode on ATi\u2019s cards, so I\u2019ll bench them with AA disabled.<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12448\" title=\"Text 2560\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text-2560.png?resize=382%2C255\" alt=\"Text 2560\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text-2560.png?resize=382%2C255 382w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text-2560-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12442\" title=\"Graph 2560\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph-2560.png?resize=545%2C689\" alt=\"Graph 2560\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph-2560.png?resize=545%2C689 545w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph-2560-237x300.png 237w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 5770 is off to a good start, offering a massive <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">42.57%<\/span> performance gain over the 4850 overall, and a smaller <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">7.68%<\/span> gain overall compared to the 260+. This is a good effort since the 5770 is cheaper than the 260+.<\/p>\n<p>It loves <em>Stalker Clear Sky<\/em> and it\u2019s twice as fast as the 4850 (largely because of more VRAM no doubt), outruns the 260+ by <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">21.48%<\/span>, and almost matches the 285\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>The red team loves <em>Fear 2<\/em> even more; the 5770 crushes the 260+ by <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">47.97%<\/span> and is <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">18.41%<\/span> faster than even the 285. Also the little 4850 significantly outruns the 260+ and gets dangerously close to the 285.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also about the same speed as the 260+ in <em>Call of Juarez 1<\/em>, but it drops off the pace a bit in the sequel.<\/p>\n<p>The 5770 takes a hit in Bioshock though, coming off <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">14.27%<\/span> slower than the 260+.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle:1920x1200--><!--nextpage--><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1920&#215;1200<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Next I\u2019ll move to 1920&#215;1200 and use settings that are demanding in these games. I\u2019ll use 2xAA except in <em>Call of Duty 4<\/em>, where 4xAA is fast enough to be used comfortably.<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12447\" title=\"Text 1920\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text-1920.png?resize=377%2C254\" alt=\"Text 1920\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text-1920.png?resize=377%2C254 377w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text-1920-300x202.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 377px) 100vw, 377px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12441\" title=\"Graph 1920\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph-1920.png?resize=547%2C688\" alt=\"Graph 1920\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph-1920.png?resize=547%2C688 547w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph-1920-238x300.png 238w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 547px) 100vw, 547px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 5770 doesn\u2019t look as comfortable here, posting a more modest <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">20.17%<\/span> overall performance gain over the 4850, and a small <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">8.12%<\/span> performance loss from the 260+ overall.<\/p>\n<p><em>Far Cry 2<\/em> is another title the red team likes, with the 5770 again outrunning even the 285, and the 4850 getting close to the 260+.<\/p>\n<p>The 5770 is also exactly equal to the 260+ in <em>Call of Duty 4<\/em>, and only marginally slower in <em>Call of Duty 5<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Where the 5770 really unravels is from the big losses in <em>Crysis Warhead<\/em> and <em>Clive Barker\u2019s Jericho<\/em>. In <em>Jericho<\/em> the red team fares particularly poorly, with the 5770 coming off a whopping <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">29.60%<\/span> slower than the 260+. I suspect these two games suffer from inadequate driver optimization because the 5770 is barely faster than the 4850.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle:8xMSAA--><!--nextpage--><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">8xMSAA<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now I\u2019ll move to some older Direct3D titles and start cranking the settings up a bit. I\u2019ll use 2560&#215;1600, 16xAF, and 8xMSAA (8xQ on nVidia\u2019s cards).<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12445\" title=\"Text 8xAA\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text-8xaa.png?resize=418%2C254\" alt=\"Text 8xAA\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text-8xaa.png?resize=418%2C254 418w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text-8xaa-300x182.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 418px) 100vw, 418px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12439\" title=\"Graph 8xAA\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph-8xaa.png?resize=547%2C688\" alt=\"Graph 8xAA\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph-8xaa.png?resize=547%2C688 547w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph-8xaa-238x300.png 238w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 547px) 100vw, 547px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 5770 posts up a large <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">28.46%<\/span> performance gain over the 4850, but even with this substantial improvement it\u2019s still <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">20.66%<\/span> slower than the 260+ overall.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a massive <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">61.04%<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">81.28%<\/span> faster than the 4850 in <em>Pacific Assault<\/em> and <em>Painkiller<\/em> respectively, but it\u2019s still miles behind the 260+ in both titles, especially in <em>Pacific Assault<\/em> where it\u2019s <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">36.73%<\/span> slower. The red team fares particularly poorly in that title and in <em>Far Cry 1<\/em>, again likely to due to insufficient driver optimization.<\/p>\n<p>The 4850 puts up a good fight in <em>Call of Duty 2<\/em> and in <em>Serious Sam 2<\/em>, and it\u2019s actually as fast as the 260+ in the latter. But driver issues prevent the 5770 from capitalizing on this good start, and it ends up being slower than the 4850 in both games.<\/p>\n<p>The 5770\u2019s best ranking on this page compared to the 260+ is in <em>Fear 1<\/em>, where it doesn\u2019t trail it by a large amount.<\/p>\n<p>To put it bluntly, nVidia basically owns this page of benchmarks.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle:OpenGL--><!--nextpage--><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">OpenGL<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Next I\u2019ll test a selection of OpenGL games. You might be wondering why <em>Quake 1<\/em> and <em>Quake 2<\/em> are in the list, why they\u2019re only run at 1680&#215;1050 with 2xAA, and why they run so slow compared to the more modern titles.<\/p>\n<p>The answer is that these particular versions are source ports. They implement per-pixel lighting &amp; shadowing, parallax mapping, HDR, post-processing, water shaders, and other nice features. Combine these features with high resolution content and the games not only look like they could\u2019ve been released today, but they also make excellent graphics test-beds. These two source ports are by far the most demanding OpenGL games available today, and with all details cranked even a GTX285 can drop into single digit framerates at the settings I used.<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12438\" title=\"Text OGL\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text-ogl.png?resize=369%2C289\" alt=\"Text OGL\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text-ogl.png?resize=369%2C289 369w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text-ogl-300x234.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 369px) 100vw, 369px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12443\" title=\"Graph OGL\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph-ogl.png?resize=549%2C783\" alt=\"Graph OGL\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph-ogl.png?resize=549%2C783 549w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph-ogl-210x300.png 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After the disastrous performance on the previous page, the 5770 bounces back with its best performance to date. It\u2019s a significant <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">27.60%<\/span> faster than the 4850 overall, but more importantly it\u2019s <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">14.08%<\/span> faster than the 260+ overall. This is an excellent result as the 260+ is the more expensive card.<\/p>\n<p>The red team generates impressive performance in <em>Quake 4<\/em>. <em>Prey<\/em> and <em>Doom 3<\/em>, and nVidia\u2019s old Achilles heel with 8xMSAA in OpenGL is still around. The 5770 has a huge <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">37.97%<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">35.91%<\/span> advantage over the 260+ in <em>Quake 4<\/em> and <em>Prey<\/em> respectively. Also the 4850 almost matches the 260+ in <em>Prey<\/em>, and isn\u2019t much slower in <em>Quake 4<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But <em>Doom 3<\/em> is where ATi absolutely crushes nVidia with quite possibly the biggest beating administered by either vendor today. The 5770 is a whopping <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">63.50%<\/span> faster than the 260+ and <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">27.77%<\/span> faster than the 285. To further rub salt in the wound, the 4850 also outruns the 260+ despite having half the VRAM and memory bandwidth. I retested ATi\u2019s cards repeatedly because I couldn\u2019t believe the scores, but I always got the same result. That\u2019s the power of driver optimization right there folks; it can make or break a card. One can only imagine what a 5870 would generate in this benchmark.<\/p>\n<p>Moving on to <em>Quake 1<\/em>, the 5770 is basically the same speed as the 260+, which is a good sign since it\u2019s unlikely ATi optimizes their OpenGL ICD for this title given almost no-one knows about it.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not all rosy for the 5770 because it posts significant loses to the 260+ in <em>Wolfenstein<\/em> and in the <em>Quake 2<\/em> source port.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle:24xAA--><!--nextpage--><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">24xAA<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>For me a major part of the fun in upgrading video cards is to crank the details in older games. So lastly I\u2019ll test 24xAA performance in more classic titles. Note that apart from <em>UT2004<\/em>, all of the games are OpenGL, and all but three run on Carmack\u2019s engines.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t be concerned that no super-sampling benchmarks were covered today; I\u2019ll be testing it in a future article installment about the 5770.<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12446\" title=\"Text 24x\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text-24x.png?resize=325%2C357\" alt=\"Text 24x\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text-24x.png?resize=325%2C357 325w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/text-24x-273x300.png 273w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12440\" title=\"Graph 24x\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph-24x.png?resize=548%2C577\" alt=\"Graph 24x\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph-24x.png?resize=548%2C577 548w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/graph-24x-284x300.png 284w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 548px) 100vw, 548px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 5770 delivers a solid <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">20.82%<\/span> performance gain over the 4850 overall, and it\u2019d be higher were it not for the clear driver issue causing poor performance in <em>UT2004<\/em>. There\u2019s also a whopping <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">66.67%<\/span> performance gain in <em>Doom 3<\/em>. What is it with ATi and this game?<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle:Other Topics--><!--nextpage--><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Other Topics<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now I\u2019d like to talk about my personal experiences with the 5770 based on the last few days I\u2019ve spent gaming on it. Firstly, in terms of design it\u2019s mostly excellent. The card is actually quite short and even with the shroud adding an inch or so of needless length from overhang, it\u2019s still significantly shorter than even a 4850. The dual-slot cooler is probably overkill for the low thermal requirements of the card, but I still prefer overkill if it means heat is being evicted out of the case. In my experience, the more heat a card dumps <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">outside<\/span> your case, the quieter the whole system is overall, even with big cases with a lot of airflow.<\/p>\n<p>Subjectively speaking I do however find the cooler to be more irritating than the GTX285\u2019s. Both cards are clearly audible during gaming, but the 285 sounds smoother while the 5770 has more of a whine to it. I game with headphones so it\u2019s not a huge deal, but I feel it\u2019s still important to mention this. Also the 6-pin connector goes inside the shroud to be connected, so it can be quite hard to pull out. ATi needs to put the connectors on the top of their cards, regardless of their length.<\/p>\n<p>On the topic of ATi\u2019s Catalyst Control Center compared to nVidia\u2019s control panel, I prefer ATi\u2019s layout and design, but nVidia\u2019s control panel opens a bit faster and doesn\u2019t add the small pause when Windows is starting up the desktop. In practice I use third party utilities for both cards, but many use the stock tools. I\u2019m also disappointed that ATi hasn\u2019t yet added automatic profile support at the driver level because this is a big boon to someone like me that has a large library of games running at different settings.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also run into a few driver issues with some legacy games which prevented me from putting up more results today (e.g. <em>Quake 3<\/em> soft crashes with a black screen at 2560&#215;1600 with 24xAA). I really do feel that at this time nVidia\u2019s drivers are a bit more robust than ATi\u2019s when presented with a large selection of games<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, I\u2019ve been testing super-sampling on the ATi card, and so far I like what I see. Even 2xSS significantly reduces texture and shader aliasing without significant blurring, and the performance hit is very reasonable, especially compared to nVidia\u2019s 8xS mode. I tested a few sections of <em>Doom 3<\/em> with 2560&#215;1600, 16xAF and 2xSS, and it looked gorgeous. I\u2019ll be covering super-sampling image quality and performance in a future article.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle:Conclusion--><!--nextpage--><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Averaging the total performance change from <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">all<\/span> of the benchmarks today, the 5770 comes out <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">27.92%<\/span> ahead of the 4850 overall, and a minuscule <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">1.75%<\/span> slower than the GTX260+ overall. This is a good result for launch drivers, especially considering the GTX260+ has vastly superior fillrate and memory bandwidth compared to the 5770. We once again see that theoretical specifications don\u2019t necessarily translate into reality.<\/p>\n<p>The 5770 represents a clear performance upgrade over the 4850\/4770, so it\u2019s a no-brainer there.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of the GTX260+ however, things get a bit trickier. The 5770 is basically equal in overall performance, but in many games it\u2019s significantly slower. You can either choose between the two based on which games you play, or you could get the 5770 and hope that driver improvements will fix the underperforming games.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve seen excellent performance from the 5770 in the titles where the drivers are optimized, and I firmly believe history will repeat itself with ATi wringing out some great performance in the end. I also suspect that both Cypress and Juniper are underperforming at the moment (intentional or not), and future driver updates will address this. In particular, I would not at all be surprised if a major driver performance update comes when nVidia\u2019s Fermi launches.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d also like to add that the results today have demonstrated why I believe it\u2019s better to benchmark a large cross section of games rather than testing a few cherry-picked games at different settings. By testing a larger section of games you get a more accurate picture overall of how the cards perform relative to each other. You\u2019re also more likely to spot compatibility and\/or performance issues, especially in titles that are no longer \u201chot\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This concludes the main performance analysis of the 5770.
