But, the product that everyone has been waiting for is missing from the launch party. According to the recent rumblings in the industry, Nvidia\u2019s DX11 parts are scheduled to arrive sometime on Q1 2010. But in the meantime, Nvidia is making sure that the PR guys are busy with getting things organized for product launches. In October they launched their first DX10.1 enabled parts, in the form of the G210 and the GT 220. These GPUs were also the first ones from Nvidia to be manufactured on TSMCs 40nm fabrication process. We reviewed these video cards <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=12024\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we will be looking at their latest launch, the GT 240. Like the G210 and the GT 220, the GT 240 is built on TSMCs 40nm process and supports DX10.1. But the GT 240 also gets to be the first product from Nvidia to support GDDR5 memory. Nvidia is launching this video card in two flavors, a GDDR3 and a GDDR5 version. To save on the BOM <em>(Bill of Materials), <\/em>Nvidia has decided to go with a 128-bit wide memory interface. Coupled with GDDR5 memory, the GT 240 should give about the same amount of performance as a 256-bit\/GDDR3 combination. Today we are taking a look at the GT 240 GDDR3 version. We we will be comparing it to other similar mid-range card from both the camps. It will be interesting to compare the GT 240 GDDR3 against the 9600 GT to see how the more shaders\/lesser bus width combination affects performance. Since the clocks on this 9600 GT are lower than a normal 9600 GT, we overclocked it to match the clocks of a reference 9600 GT. However, since this is a green 9600 GT, its power consumption is not representative of a non-green 9600 GT.<\/p>\n<p>The memory on the HD 4650 has also been overclocked to match the reference clocks of a HD 4650 GDDR3 version.<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h1>Unboxing Video &amp; Image Gallery<\/h1>\n<p>The card comes packed nicely in a small but sturdy cardboard box. The card itself is packed in a small white box which is held between two pieces of foam, a novel idea to prevent the card from any damage during shipping.<br \/>\n<!--pagetitle:Unboxing Video &#038; Image Gallery--><br \/>\nGalaxy tends to use non-reference coolers on their cards. The coolers are either their in house designs or designs from established players in the cooling industry such as Arctic Cooling. We saw an example of this in our <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=13666\">Galaxy GTX 275 Overclocked review<\/a>. On the GT 240, Galaxy is using an in-house designed cooler. Adopting a full metal design, with a cover made of aluminum the cooler is said to offer temperatures 10-15 degrees lower than the reference cooler.<\/p>\n<p>The card offers HDMI, DVI and VGA output options, a trio that we have seen on Galaxy cards in the past. The card also includes an on-board HDMI audio processor, first seen on the G210 and the GT 220. This removes the need to use the S\/PDIF cable to route audio through the video card for HDMI output.<\/p>\n<p>Use of the 40nm process for the GPU fabrication, has allowed Nvidia to lower the power consumption of the card. As such, this card does not need a power connector. It draws all the necessary power from the PCI-E slot.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at the images first, then the unboxing video.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/galaxygt240gddr3d-jpg.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; Thus temperatures and power consumption measured with Furmark represent the worst-case scenario. Although no game today puts as much load on the GPU as Furmark does, should a game do that in future, you will be ready armed with the knowledge gained by testing with Furmark \u2013 knowing how hot your card can get and how much power it can consume.<\/p>\n<p>According to its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ozone3d.net\/benchmarks\/fur\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.ozone3d.net\/benchmarks\/fur\/', 'developer']);\" >developer<\/a>, \u201cFurmark is a very intensive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ozone3d.net\/techpedia\/opengl\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.ozone3d.net\/techpedia\/opengl\/', 'OpenGL']);\" >OpenGL<\/a> benchmark that uses fur rendering algorithms to measure the performance of the graphics card. Fur rendering is especially adapted to overheat the GPU and that\u2019s why Furmark is also a perfect stability and stress test tool (also called GPU burner) for the graphics card. This benchmark requires an OpenGL 2.0 compliant graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 5\/6\/7\/8 (and higher), AMD\/ATI Radeon 9600 (and higher) or a S3 Graphics Chrome 400 series with the latest graphics drivers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furmark was left running for a period of 10 minutes after which the final load temperature was measured. The ambient temperature was 24-25C.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"Temperature\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Temperature1.png?resize=552%2C268\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Temperature\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/> \\<\/p>\n<h1>Overclocking<\/h1>\n<p>Furmark Stability test was used to find the maximum stable overclock. We used EVGA\u2019s Precision Tuner for overclocking. After all the dust was settled, here are the overclocked frequencies. 650MHz\/1584MHz\/1050MHz (core\/shader\/memory). <a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/gt240oc-gif.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0pt none; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"GT 240 OC\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/gt240oc-gif.gif?resize=245%2C307\" border=\"0\" alt=\"GT 240 OC\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h1>Power Usage (Total System Consumption)<\/h1>\n<p>Furmark 1.7.0 was run in extreme burning mode with the fur rendered at 640\u00d7480 with no AA. Measuring power usage with Furmark is the worst case scenario. As it is a DX10-only benchmark, it only runs on Windows Vista and Windows 7. 3DMark Vantage is composed of four full-bore benchmarking tests (2 CPU tests and 2 GPU tests) and 6 feature tests. It uses a proprietary game engine that includes features such as true world-dynamic lightning, HDR lighting effects, dynamics shadows, and depth of field. It features a fictional story set in the near-future. The most well-received part of the game is its multiplayer modes, where you earn experience points for kills and completing certain tasks online. These experience points unlock certain abilities and new and more powerful guns which can tip the balance in your favor in online matches.<br \/>\n<!--pagetitle:Call of Duty 4:Modern Warfare--><br \/>\nFor testing this game, I recorded a timedemo on the \u201cVacant\u201d map. The demo was recorded while trying to capture some of the most graphically intense sections of the game, like throwing a smoke grenade and then walking and shooting in it, which really brings all the cards to their knees resulting in the minimum FPS. The demo was played back at normal speed with the demo command from the console. Since taking on the <em>Dirt<\/em> moniker, this game has expanded from just rally racing to include a lot of off-road events. Powered by the EGO engine, the PC version of the game was delayed to include DX11 features such as hardware tessellation. Overclocking the GT 240 GDDR3 does get it close to the 9600 GT but the difference is too great to be covered by overclocking.<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h1>HAWX<\/h1>\n<p><em>Tom Clancy\u2019s H.A.W.X.<\/em> (\u201dHigh Altitude Warfare eXperimental squadron\u201d) is an aerial warfare video game developed by Ubisoft Romania and published by Ubisoft.\u00a0 Players have the opportunity to take the throttle of over 50 famous aircraft and fly them over real world locations and cities in photo-realistic environments created with satellite data. This game is a more of an arcade take on flying, with the aircraft able to do drifts in mid air like a car does on the road. The popularity of this series can be judged from the release of three Hollywood movies, comics, novels and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Resident_Evil\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Resident_Evil', '25 games']);\" >25 games<\/a> in the series spanning a variety of platforms. We are testing the latest game in this series to grace the PC platform. The PC version has some new content compared to the console versions including, \u201cnew costumes and a new and improved mercenary\u2019s mode with three times as many enemies.\u201d This game features support for Nvidia\u2019s GeForce 3D Vision glasses. It was released for coin-operated arcade machines in July 2008; for consoles in February, 2009 and the PC got its version in July, 2009. Team Fortress 2 is focused around two opposing teams competing for an objective. Players can choose to play as one of nine classes in these teams, each with their own unique strengths and weaknesses.<br \/>\n<!--pagetitle:Team Fortress 2--><br \/>\nThis game gives a good idea of performance of other games based on Valve\u2019s source engine. The HD 4650 which has been beat by a very large margin in our previous tests, has come back to take the lead over the GT 240 GDDR3. I tested this again and again, and each time got the same result.<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h1>Conclusion<\/h1>\n<p>The GT 240 GDDR3 is a good card that offers good performance, when compared to the HD 4650. Although the GT 240 GDDR3 got beat soundly in some games by the 9600 GT, in others it managed to stay close and overtake the 9600GT after overclocking. I expect the GDDR5 version of the GT 240 to beat the 9600 GT in almost all the games. But the problem with the GDDR3 version is the price. Launched at the $89.99 price point, the performance per dollar of this video card is quite low when compared to its GDDR5 version which sells for $10 more. The GDDR3 version loses badly to the 9600 GT <em>(in non DX10.1 games)<\/em> which can be found in the market for about the same price. But the price for the GDDR3 version will go down in a few months, which will make the GDDR3 version of the GT 240 an attractive prospect for bargain hunters. Until then, unfortunately I cannot recommend you to spend money on the GDDR3 version of the GT 240. However, I expect the GDDR5 version, which is currently selling for $99.99, to offer more performance than the 9600 GT and at almost the same price point.
