When we started benchmarking well over 8 weeks ago with Catalyst 8-8 and Geforce 175.19, we were not quite certain exactly where we would go or what we would find. We did have a clear idea that we would try to determine if video cards from the last generation or so need upgrading; and we are referring particularly to Radeon 2900/3800 series, and Geforce 8800/9800 series. Our review is in several parts and will cover comparisons of Catalyst Drivers 8-8, 8-9, and 8-10 with 3 sets of GeForce 177.41, 178.24, and180.48

Test Configuration

We are testing at 1650×1050 and 1920×1600 resolutions. These are probably the most common resolutions that most gamers would be upgrading their upper-midrange and top cards from the last generation or so for. We decided to test 2900XT, which is largely unsurpassed by 3800 series – and is also the near-equivalent of the 8800-GTS series – as representative of upper-midrange cards of that generation. We also picked the venerable 8800-GTX, which has been a top choice standard for almost 2 years and mostly unsurpassed by Nvidia’s offerings, except for the higher-clocked Ultra, until Tesla architecture launched a few months ago. We took some of the very latest games and we benchmark them for you at the most demanding in-game settings, with Vista 32 and in DX-10 whenever possible with 4xAA/16xAF. These settings are probably the most commonly chosen and difficult settings for new games that a video card will run. The games we are testing include, Crysis, Call of Juarez, F.E.A.R., STALKER, Half-Life2, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (ET:QW), Unreal Tournament 3 (UT3), Lost Planet, GRID, FarCry2, PT Boats DX10 demo, as well as the synthetic benchmarks, 3DMark06, Vantage and Fur.

We’d like to give our opinion here about benchmarking for this article. We prefer to use built-in benchmarks whenever possible. As a second choice, we use custom recorded time-demos and FRAPS. We find that ‘real world’ testing has too many variables to truly paint an accurate picture of differences between closely competing cards, and especially when performance is sometimes only a frame rate or two different between 2 closely competing video cards. We also found that non-repeatable real world testing may skew conclusions. We will let you know when we do this kind of testing and exactly how we set it up. Of course we feel that the video card manufacturers will not ignore the built-in benchmarks or established recorded time-demos and will of course make sure that they run decently on their respective hardware. So you may find that these benchmarks run slightly better than your own in-game experience might. Take this into consideration, but also remember that the other cards will run well on these benchmarks also; you will get a very good comparison of relative performance for each game tested. Finally, we also use synthetic benchmarks, such as Futuremark’s 3-D Mark 06 and Vantage, as well as the OpenGL Fur benchmark. For the later Futuremark benches, pay particular attention to the two mini-games that are benchmarked within these synthetic benchmarks – where the actual frame rates can be compared. If you take all of these benchmarks together, then you will get a pretty good and accurate picture of the current state of the performance of each of the video cards as they relate to each other. Each card has been tested for weeks and you will also get impressions of relative performance beyond benchmarking to actual game play – which is subjective and will be clearly stated as personal opinion or preference.

We will also be testing crossfire combinations which include crossfire X-3 = 4870×2 + 4870-512MB vs. crossfire X-3 = 4870×2 + 4870-1GB, to see what penalty – if any – Crossfire X3 (CFx3) experiences when limited to 512MB. We will also be testing our Gigabyte crossfire P-35 motherboard’s performance – 1.0 PCIe specification and 16x+4x PCIe crossfire slots – vs. ASUS p35e deluxe x48 Mother board performance with its 2.0 PCIe specification and 16x+16x PCIe crossfire slots. We also compare Intel’s core2duo, e8600 at 3.33Ghz and also at 4 GHz, with each of our top cards, motherboard and crossfire combinations to look a little bit at CPU “bottlenecking”.

So let’s begin with our first round of tests. We are using Catalyst 8-8 and GeForce 177.41 – final certified drivers are used for our testing all through this first part of this review. Identical 250GB hard drives are set up with the latest version of Vista32-SP1; each with identical programs, updates and patches – the only difference are the video cards. We used a Gigabyte P35 Crossfire MB – 1.0 PCIe spec and CF 16x + 4x for this Part One. This is probably because of e8600’s much larger cache and newer optimizations. It is noticeable even with a single HD4870-512MB video card. We can also see that when you are using a card of the 4870X2 class, it starts to make a significant performance difference. The back-story actually takes place as a prequel to Quake II. Quake Wars pits the combined human armies of the Global Defense Force (GDF) against the technologically superior Strogg, an alien race who has come to earth to use humans for spare parts and food, and it allows you to play a part in the desperate battles waged around the world in mankind’s desperate war to survive.

Quake Wars is based on id’s Doom 3 game engine, with the addition of their MegaTexture technology. id’s MegaTexture technology is designed to provide very large maps without having to reuse the same textures over and over again. Usually before this, in many games, these textures would have to be loaded from memory or off the hard drive which impacts performance. Instead with MegaTexture, a single extremely large texture is used to handle the basic terrain, with texture management handled by a pixel shader program – and this is all done with a small memory footprint.

By using this technology, QW’s artists could construct one very large map that is unique with no repeating terrain tiles. For example, battlefields can be rendered completely to the horizon with no fogging needed and no piece of terrain detail ever needs to be repeated. With texture compression these large images only take up a small bit of video RAM so as you move through each map there are no repeated pieces of detail. QW:ET is an OpenGL based game as it is based on the the Doom 3 engine. Many new game features are present that supports self-shadowing and an HDR-like bloom effect with dynamic lighting, high texture quality, and soft foliage. It originally came out for the Xbox 360 in January of 2007. The game takes place on the icy planet of E.D.N. III which is filled with monsters, pirates, big guns, and huge bosses. The planet has limited resources and very hostile native inhabitants known as the Akrid, an insect-like race. As Wayne the snow pirate, you make your way through snow-ravaged landscapes to avenge the death of your father who has been killed by Green-Eye, an Akrid. This frigid world makes a great environment to highlight the benefits of high dynamic range lighting (HDR) as the snow-white environment reflects blinding sunlight, while DX10 particle systems toss bits of snow and ice all around. Akrid contain a thermal energy source inside their body that are used to provide Wayne with both heat and energy. This energy is vital to your health in the game, instead of relying on a traditional health meter. You must collect this energy from the dead Akrid to stay alive and healthy and must keep moving.

Lost Planet’s Snow and Cave demos are run continuously in-game and blend into each other.

The game looks great in both DirectX 9 and 10 and there isn’t really much of a difference between the two versions. It was released for Windows on November 19, 2007. While many games share the same Unreal 3 engine, the developers can decide how high the system requirements will be, by increasing the level of detail. Unreal Tournament 3 provides a good balance between image quality and performance, rendering complex scenes even on lower end hardware. Of course, on high end graphics cards you can really turn up the detail.. UT3 is primarily an online multiplayer title offering several game modes, including large-scale Warfare, Capture-the-Flag, and Deathmatch. One drawback of the way the UT3 engine is designed is that there is no support for Anti-Aliasing built in. While video card vendors like have found ways to force this in their drivers control panel, we did our testing with AA disabled at maximum settings. Here we use the “timedemo-style” of benchmark. A “demo” is recorded in the game and a set number of frames are saved in a file for playback. When playing back the demo, the game engine then renders the frames as quickly as possible, which is why you will often see the “timedemo-style” of benchmarks playing it back more quickly than you would play the game.

Containment Demo is our Unreal Tournament3 fly-by of choice

Even the older video cards have no problem with UT3 even at the highest settings we ran. Unreal Tournament3 is largely CPU bound, even at a resolution of 1920×1200. We do not see 4870X2 scaling largely because of this issue. This game has a non-linear storyline and features role playing gameplay elements such as trading and allying with NPC factions. The background and some terminology of the game is borrowed from the Russian Sci-fi book Roadside Picnic by Boris and Arkady Strugatsjy and the 1979 film Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky.

In S.T.A.L.K.E.R., the player assumes the identity of “The Marked One” – an amnesiac “Stalker” – an illegal artefact scavenger in “The Zone”. This is the location of an alternate reality story surrounding the Chernobyl Power Plant after another (fictitious) explosion. On July 11, 2007, GSC Game World announced a prequel which was released on September 5, 2008 as “Prologue: S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Clear Sky” and will also eventually become a DX10 benchmark for us, later on. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. stands for “Specially Trained in Artifact, Lifeform and Kinetics – Energy Retrieval”.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. takes place in an area called “The Zone”, which encompasses roughly 30 square kilometers and features a slice of Chernobyl extending south from Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant with geographical changes for artistic license include moving the city of Pypiat into this area. This game features “a living breathing world” with highly developed NPC creature AI which presents many realistic behaviors, such as pack mentality that are observed in non-scripted events. The game engine was designed so that animal behavior is calculated even if the player is in a different part of the world. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. uses the X-ray Engine, a DirectX8.1/9 Shader model 3.0 graphics engine. Up to a million polygons can be on-screen at any one time. The engine features HDR, parralex and normal mapping, widescreen support, soft shadows, motion blur, weather effects and day-to-night cycles. As with other engines using deferred shading, the X-ray Engine does not support anti-ailsing with dynamic lighting enabled. However, a form of anti-aliasing can be enabled that uses a technique to blur the image to give an impression of anti-aliasing.

Our benchmarks for this DX9c game are timedemo runs called “short” and “building”.
