Goddamn rules are running this game,\u201d<\/em> \u2013 <strong>George Clooney, Leatherheads (2008) <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to The Nielson Co., 106.5 million people watched Super Bowl XLIV.<\/p>\n<p>Our kids grabbed most of their favorite Winter Olympics events on their smartphones or notebooks.<\/p>\n<p>With less than 100 days to futbol\u2019s World Cup, we\u2019re all looking forward to the South African event.<\/p>\n<p>Tons of thrills, chills, spills, action.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of spectacular viewing quality; but according to the reports, we\u2019ve responded about the same as everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>Networks and stations expected us to be all over the action.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s with the TV set, a notebook, smartphone or with the iNet, we are attached to TV viewing.<\/p>\n<p>Sporting events have always driven big screen sales, and this year is no exception:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>115.5 mln LCD TVs to sell in 2010<\/li>\n<li>144 bln digital TVs will sell by 2011<\/li>\n<li>75% of HDTVs sold by 2011 will be LCD TVs<\/li>\n<li>Flat panel TV spending to exceed $100 bln in 2010<\/li>\n<li>1080p LCD TV to generate $75.4 bln in 2011<\/li>\n<li>30% of cable subscribers would drop cable if shows were available over broadband<\/li>\n<li>78% of mobile TV users are in Asia-Pacific<\/li>\n<li>85% of HDTV owners are happy with picture quality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/wwtv2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15898\" title=\"WWTV2\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/wwtv2.jpg?resize=518%2C390\" alt=\"WWTV2\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/wwtv2.jpg?resize=518%2C390 518w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/wwtv2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Figure 2:\u00a0 Digital, Flat \u2013 <\/strong>Almost everywhere<strong> <\/strong>around the globe television content is being distributed in digital high-definition.\u00a0 The conversion sparked flat screen set sales, sales enticed competition and competition brought us lower prices.\u00a0 Now manufacturers and retailers are encouraging you to have sets throughout the house.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8212; iSuppli<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Big Screen Lust<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s not to love about the big beauties ?<\/p>\n<p>The new flat panel sets are testosterone pumpers\u2026the bigger the better!<\/p>\n<p>The stations and networks are also getting to like the web-based download idea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kids find it an excellent means of staying up with the news of the day.\u00a0 They also like the idea of being able to grab event highlights when they want.<\/p>\n<p>Stations, networks are starting to dream of a time when they can bypass the cable\/satellite folks all together.<\/p>\n<p>Sweet!<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, advertisers (and agencies) expected all of us to be all over the ads!<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s right\u2026watch the ad, immediately interact. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You know\u2026share the ads with friends, visit the web site, Tweet with all of your followers, do your social media thing<\/p>\n<p>Maybe all of the social media and advertising smoke and mirrors is just\u2026smoke, mirrors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Or, as Lexie said, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Sorry if what I said today upset you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You watch the sporting events at home with a herd of friends or at the pub with other enthusiasts\u2026it\u2019s a social event.<\/p>\n<p>Or, as Faith Popcorn, renowned futurist said, you cocoon and click in the security of your home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You know what to expect from your TV.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/features4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15899\" title=\"features4\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/features4.jpg?resize=599%2C384\" alt=\"features4\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/features4.jpg?resize=599%2C384 599w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/features4-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Figure 3: Viewing Your Way \u2013 <\/strong>In the \u201cold days,\u201d you were happy to watch something, anything on your TV set; but with so much demand on your time and the freedoms people experience with the Internet, you want\/expect more. Often, one doesn\u2019t replace the other, it becomes additive. But whether it is combined viewing or just on the computer, the results are the same\u2026just watching! <strong>Source &#8212; eMarketer<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In the case of the Super Bowl\u2026in real-time.<\/p>\n<p>For week-long events, like the Olympics, online (and on phone) is the only way to catch the action.<\/p>\n<p>Our kid watches when (and where) he wants, so he doesn\u2019t miss the snowboard and hockey events.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s not alone:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div style=\"PADDING-LEFT: 30px\">69% of Americans think PCs are more entertaining than TV<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"PADDING-LEFT: 30px\">38% of US consumers watching TV shows online<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"PADDING-LEFT: 30px\">Ad engagement for online shows is 25% higher than TV shows<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"PADDING-LEFT: 30px\">52% of urban males do not get enough international content on their TV<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The younger generation finds it \u201cnatural\u201d to watch shows, news and events on the Internet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/reasons.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15901\" title=\"reasons\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/reasons.jpg?resize=459%2C188\" alt=\"reasons\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/reasons.jpg?resize=459%2C188 459w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/reasons-300x122.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 459px) 100vw, 459px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Figure 5: Because It\u2019s There &#8212; <\/strong>TV viewing is no longer hit-or-miss, thanks to the growing number of shows and news coverage networks and local stations posting on their web sites. There\u2019s no longer a need to fight over the remote, master the DVR or drop everything to watch a show. Increasingly, people like to watch on their terms. <strong>Source: Nielsen<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Viewing on Their Terms<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other reasons include:<\/p>\n<p style=\"PADDING-LEFT: 30px\">&#8211; \u201cTo watch a specific show\u201d was the main reason cited for 21% of all visits to major network websites. Of the major network sites, abc.com received the highest user experience score among those who streamed a TV show, with 52% rating their overall experience as \u2018excellent,\u201d followed by fox.com (44% \u201cexcellent\u201d).<\/p>\n<p style=\"PADDING-LEFT: 30px\">&#8211; Top major network TV shows viewed online included Heroes, Grey\u2019s Anatomy, Dancing with the Stars, Ugly Betty, Chuck, CSI and House, Kitchen Nightmares, Smallville and Gossip Girl.<\/p>\n<p style=\"PADDING-LEFT: 30px\">&#8211; Those who viewed one of the leading 20 prime time shows in the past 24 hours said 25% of prime time viewing was time-shifted using broadband, mobile or similar. Among viewers 18-34, one-third (34%) of viewing was time-shifted.<\/p>\n<p>As Lexie said, <em>\u201cYou know, you have a real knack for showing up at the perfect time!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Face it, there\u2019s just more variety online (professional, semipro, amateur, other). And you get to pick and choose what, when, where rather than having someone tell you when to be entertained, informed.<\/p>\n<p>Ok\u2026you\u2019re watching all this stuff, but you\u2019re not doing your part !!<\/p>\n<p>Companies measure their marketing programs (that includes ads) on you taking some action.<\/p>\n<p>Sure a nice warm fuzzy feeling is nice, but they dropped bundles for the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics. So will the advertisers who support Futbol\u2019s World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>They want more from you\u2026lots more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/methods.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15902\" title=\"methods\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/methods.jpg?resize=324%2C364\" alt=\"methods\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/methods.jpg?resize=324%2C364 324w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/methods-267x300.jpg 267w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 324px) 100vw, 324px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Figure 6: Big Ads, Big Returns \u2013 <\/strong>Companies that advertise their products\/services during the big events, as well smaller events\/activities \u2013 including web sites, email, print, radio, blogs \u2013 do it for one reason\u2026sell stuff. The wheels of commerce work because people learn about new items, are reminded they need things, build a feeling of wanting\/needing. Don\u2019t say advertising doesn\u2019t influence you\u2026it does! <strong>Source \u2013 King Fish Media<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So do the networks, because they\u2019re basing their rates on the big numbers of viewers, not on the few click-throughs from your PC.<\/p>\n<p>George Clooney reminded us, <em>\u201cI guess I should get a couple of diagrams of the plays we run.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Not a Replacement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sure, the iNet folks will say they\u2019re killing the TV model, but that isn\u2019t quite true:<\/p>\n<p style=\"PADDING-LEFT: 30px\">&#8211; Despite the proliferation of computers, video-capable mobile phones and similar devices, TV in the home still commands the greatest amount of viewing, even among those ages 18-24<\/p>\n<p style=\"PADDING-LEFT: 30px\">&#8211; TV users were exposed to, on average, 72 minutes per day of TV ads and promos, dispelling a commonly held belief that modern consumers are channel-hopping or otherwise avoiding most of the advertising in the programming they view.<\/p>\n<p style=\"PADDING-LEFT: 30px\">&#8211; &#8220;Environmental&#8221; exposure outside the home, while still relatively small at just 2.8% of total video consumption today, could nearly double during the next few years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"PADDING-LEFT: 30px\">&#8211; Although the composition of consumers&#8217; screen media time varied across age groups, their total screen time was strikingly similar<\/p>\n<p style=\"PADDING-LEFT: 30px\">&#8211; 99% of Nielsen&#8217;s Three-Screen Time is TV. Even among Adults 18-24, TV was more than 98%<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not responding and interacting as \u201cyou should,\u201d maybe it\u2019s the content they\u2019re showing you:<\/p>\n<p style=\"PADDING-LEFT: 30px\">&#8211; Remember Apple\u2019s 1984 ad? Ran once, you still remember it!<\/p>\n<p style=\"PADDING-LEFT: 30px\">&#8211; Recall the Budweiser ads? Interesting, entertaining, draw you in<\/p>\n<p style=\"PADDING-LEFT: 30px\">&#8211; Google\u2019s real-time ad? Convinced us\u2026we switched to Bing<\/p>\n<p>Maybe they\u2019re just trying to tap into you too often with their Tweets, their banners, their interactive ads, their email pitches, their phone messages, their\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Might jut be too much; or, as Clooney said, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>It&#8217;s too bad we know each other so well.
