I HATE THEM!\u201d<\/i> <b>\u2013 Anakin, Attack of the Clones (2002), Lucasfilms<\/b><\/p>\n<p>There are few more enjoyable places to have a convention than Barcelona, Spain.<\/p>\n<p>How the folks that hit on the idea of holding the World Mobile Congress (WMC) there we\u2019ll never understand, but its gorgeous city!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s where \u201calmost\u201d all the leaders of the on-the-go phone industry gather.<\/p>\n<p>It seems like everyone has some form of a mobile phone. <\/p>\n<p><b>Mobile Phone Subscribers Ages 13-24 Who Use<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>User-generated Content and Social Networking Applications on their Phones<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"clip_image004\" border=\"0\" alt=\"clip_image004\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/clip_image0041.jpg?resize=324%2C135\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Source: M:metrics, Inc.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Mobile Population \u2013 <\/b>With 300+ million in the U.S. and six billion plus globally, mobile phone\/device penetration is rapidly approaching 90+ percent. Young\/old, rich\/poor, male\/female are constantly available if not using their device to communicate with others, find information\/entertainment. <b>Source &#8212; eMarketer<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Big Dollars<\/b><\/p>\n<p>According to iSuppli, the industry is getting huge:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Global spending on wireless equipment and services surpassed $1 trillion for the first time ever in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 The wireless supply chain garnered $900 billion in service and equipment revenue in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 When combined with the $110 billion in consumer spending on wireless devices and accessories, it amounted to $1.01 trillion in total spending.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 To drive the next trillion dollars of growth, a paradigm shift is required with more focus on maximizing share of the over-the-top applications, content and services market.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 The global cell phone market performed better than expected in 2009, with shipments declining by 6.7 % to 1.14 billion units, down from 1.23 billion in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Global cell phone shipments are expected to grow to 1.28 billion in 2010, up 12.1 % from 2009.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Nokia kept its lead in the global cell phone market in the fourth quarter, accounting for 38.9 % of global unit shipments &#8212; up from 37.4 % in the third quarter.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 The other Top-5 cell-phone brand to gain share in the fourth quarter was Samsung which rose to 21.1 %, up from 20.7 % in the third quarter.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s WMC was filled more with intrigue rather than huge product\/service announcements.<\/p>\n<p>All of the focus was on the little Cupertino, CA company \u2013 yeah, Apple \u2013 even though the boss didn\u2019t bother showing up.<\/p>\n<p>But he\u2019s got more important things to do like collaborate on his autobiography. Yes, Disney has already signed up for the movie rights!<\/p>\n<p>True, smartphones had been around for a long time \u2013 plain and dull, but around \u2013 before the iPhone.<\/p>\n<p>Then Jobs introduced his little app store and gave folks a way to do more with their super cool iPhones. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"clip_image006\" border=\"0\" alt=\"clip_image006\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/clip_image0061.jpg?resize=294%2C221\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Face of Change \u2013 <\/b>Apple\u2019s introduction of the iPhone, as well as its complete garden of services, has changed (some say revitalized) the mobile industry. Even though the company has only 15% of the smartphone market, they are the company everyone wants to copy\/surpass\/beat.<\/p>\n<p><b>iPhoners are Special<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Apple deserves a lot of credit for spicing up the industry and making folks think beyond the norm:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 <strong>iPhone owners are more than twice as likely to use the mobile Internet<\/strong>, a massive 78% of working iPhone owners do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 <strong>Mobile email and texting are much more common among iPhone owners<\/strong><b>.<\/b> They text weekly, in contrast with 60% of smartphone owners and 36% of mobile phone owners.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 <strong>Households with iPhones spend more on mobile bills than the average mobile household. <\/strong>As a group, they spend $87 on their monthly mobile phone bills.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 <strong>iPhone owners are twice as likely as others to go online in public.<\/strong> That\u2019s twice as many as all mobile phone owners (17%), 9 % higher than all smartphone users (26%)<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 <strong>Fifty <\/strong>percent<strong> are more likely to read a blog weekly &#8212; 23<\/strong>% of iPhoners read a blog at least weekly, compared to 16% smartphone owners and 11% of mobile owner owners. <\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 <strong>A third are more likely to maintain a social networking profile weekly<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> Twenty-six percent of working iPhone owners maintain profiles on social networks, while only 19% of smartphone owners and 14% of mobile phone owners do.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 <strong>Twenty <\/strong>percent<strong> are more likely to use instant messaging weekly \u201344<\/strong>% of iPhone owners uses IM at least weekly versus 37% of smartphone owners and 24% of mobile phone owners.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 <strong>More iPhone owners telecommute and access the network from home \u2013<\/strong> 28% telecommute regularly, 42% regularly access an employer\u2019s network.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 <strong>Although more connected to work, fewer iPhone owners bring laptops home<\/strong><strong> &#8212;<\/strong> 36% compared with 42% for smartphone owners.<\/p>\n<p>No wonder AT&amp;T loves the iPhone\u2026at any cost. No wonder \u201ceveryone\u201d wants a piece of the action.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s WDC seemed to devote an inordinate amount of attention to challenging the little company at One Infinity Circle with new app stores\/alliances, new tablets, new OS ideas.<\/p>\n<p>First, Ballmer admitted that his first effort for a mobile platform was \u201ca little off\u201d and Microsoft had come back with a vengeance, a little more humble but with a vengeance!<\/p>\n<p><b>Eric\u2019s Plan<\/b><\/p>\n<p>However, Google\u2019s Schmidt had an even better solution for the mobile industry. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"clip_image008\" border=\"0\" alt=\"clip_image008\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/clip_image008-jpg.jpg?resize=171%2C229\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The Vision \u2013 <\/b>Google\u2019s Schmidt made his first appearance at the World Mobile Congress (WMC) and told the attendees what his vision of the future of mobile communications would look like. The vision wasn\u2019t exactly warmly received.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh from Davos (the world financial summit in Switzerland), he patiently explained how the mobile industry was going to make gazillions of dollars with<b><i> his<\/i><\/b> solution!<\/p>\n<p>Not long ago, he launched Google\u2019s free smartphone platform, began selling his own branded phone direct to consumers and just announced he was going to build his own super-fast broadband network.<\/p>\n<p>At WMC, he mesmerized audience saying, <i>&quot;We want to have a little bit of Google in everybody&#8217;s transaction with the Internet.&quot; <\/i><\/p>\n<p>His mobile industry idea sounds almost as good as what his ex-buddy did for the music industry with iTunes!<\/p>\n<p><i>H**L yes, Eric!\u201d Where do we sign up?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The problems are:<\/p>\n<p>o almost universally people dislike (don\u2019t tolerate) ads on their smartphone<\/p>\n<p>o the operators have to invest even more gazillions to upgrade their networks for all the data services demand<\/p>\n<p>Operators already plan to invest in 4G, LTE (long-term evolution), femtocells and other technologies.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s just to keep pace with ITU (International Telecommunications Union) estimates of more than five billion mobile subscribers by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re going to expect those great \u201call you can eat\u201d data services<\/p>\n<p>But no one wants the pay-for-what you use option!<\/p>\n<p>As Anakin said<i>, \u201cYou&#8217;re asking me to be rational. I know that is something I cannot do.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Schmidt reassured the mumbling crowd that Google had their backs when he said, <i>&quot;I assure you, you will get that money back in many ways.&quot;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The audience knew that a smartphone is the action tool of choice:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Global smartphone shipments are expected to rise to 246.9 million units in 2010, up 12.1 % from 181 million in 2009. <\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Only Nokia had a double-digit market share in 2007. By 2009, three had a double-digit share of the smartphone market &#8212; Nokia, RIM and Apple.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Approximately 30 % of all smartphone models are expected to use the Android operating system in 2010, more than triple the 9 % in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 More than 20 smartphone OEMs are expected to support Android in 2010, up from four in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 The Mac OS held a 14 % share of smartphone unit shipments in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>And these folks use their portable device for a heckova\u2019 lot more than making calls.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mobile Content Function Satisfaction by Operating System<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>(based on 100-point scale)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"clip_image010\" border=\"0\" alt=\"clip_image010\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/clip_image010-jpg.jpg?resize=324%2C227\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Source: CFI Group<\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>More Data Functions &#8212; <\/b>Smartphone users across the board, and almost regardless of their service provider, are happy with the data services they use with their device. And the next generation will be even more advanced. <b>Source &#8212; NYTimes<\/b><\/p>\n<p>They aren\u2019t alone.<\/p>\n<p>According to Nielsen Company, 77% have their own phone, 11% borrow a phone and 12 % are phone naked. Often they call each other but increasingly they text. <b>Source &#8212; MRI<\/b><\/p>\n<p>You know &#8212; accessing the Internet, emailing, GPS, text messaging, playing games, taking pictures, sending picture messages and tons and tons of mobile entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>Nielsen estimates that American teens sent an average of 3,146 texts a month <b>each <\/b>during Q3 2009 or 10 per hour not spent asleep or in school. <\/p>\n<p>Their 9-12 crowd sent an average of 1,146 monthly texts each, or four per hour not spent asleep or in school. <\/p>\n<p>In Q4 2009, users age 9-12 increased text usage by 8% and almost doubled their text message volume. <\/p>\n<p>In comparison, the average number of monthly texts sent by all mobile users combined was a little more than 500. <\/p>\n<p><b>The New Laptop<\/b><\/p>\n<p>For them, the smartphone is the new laptop. There are 10x more smartphones in use than notebooks.<\/p>\n<p>That comes as no surprise to the folks in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 75.1 million users in Japan (83 % of the mobile users) accessed the Internet via mobile phones in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>All you have to do is train your fingers to hit the itty-bitty keyboard and <b><i>BAM!!!<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s just one thing they still don\u2019t do beautifully\u2026handle calls.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a combination of a good phone combined with clear, clean, crisp, reliable service.<\/p>\n<p>Still <i>a little<\/i> tough!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"clip_image016\" border=\"0\" alt=\"clip_image016\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/clip_image016-jpg.jpg?resize=409%2C205\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Netbooks Getting Smart<\/b> \u2013 While many prefer the convenience and versatility of today\u2019s smartphone, there is a new, more powerful, more versatile generation of netbooks beginning to hit the market that could grab marketshare both from smartphones and standard notebooks. <b>Source &#8212; NYTimes<\/b><\/p>\n<p>So we\u2019ll carry two devices \u2013 pretty decent cellphone and one of the newer, more powerful netbooks (we prefer to call them a smartbook) for all the other stuff.<\/p>\n<p>O.K., you can throw a camera on the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, maybe GPS too.<\/p>\n<p>But the rest?<\/p>\n<p>The kids have to train us.<\/p>\n<p>As Yoda said, <i>\u201cPain, suffering, death I feel.
