Just a few years ago, every enthusiast was running a 1066 MHz DDR2 kit, or trying to get there with their 800 MHz kit. Ambitious overclockers were trying to reach for the 1100 to 1200 MHz range. Then the world got introduced to DDR3 memory technology with 1066 MHz speed as the minimum. Now 1333 Mhz and 1600 MHz kits are the norm, with high end kits coming in at 2000+ Mhz. Intel\u2019s Nehalem architecture brought along with it a triple-channel controller, allowing even more bandwidth to memory intensive applications. Owing to the fact that AMD&#8217;s latest Phenom II CPUs and Intel\u2019s Socket 1156 CPUs still use a dual channel controller, a 2x2GB memory configuration is most widely used today.<\/p>\n<p>In the test labs we have a 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 kit sample from Kingston. A big sticker seal across the box identifies the model number, timings and voltage among other important specifications.The memory kits are covered by a plastic see-through cover. The packaging is really good here, as once the seal is broken you can just lift the top cover off. The machined HyperX logo with silver accented plate running along the top of the heatspreader is just a plain treat to see. The blue color on the the heatspreaders looks great too. But the difference ends there. Although 3DMark is a synthetic 3D benchmark, PCMark is a benchmark based on real world scenarios. It runs real world tests to test each component in your system. These include CPU, memory, storage and video card. The combined result is reported as a PCMark Score. In our benchmarking in this review, I only run the Memory tests.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong>Everest 5.30<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Everest is another famous benchmarking software in the enthusiast world. Here we used the various memory tests available from the Everest suite.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong>SANDRA 2010 SP1<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>SANDRA, short for the <strong>S<\/strong>ystem <strong>AN<\/strong>alyser, <strong>D<\/strong>iagnostic and <strong>R<\/strong>eporting <strong>A<\/strong>ssistant is an information &amp; diagnostic utility. It provides a lot of information about every hardware and software component in your PC. It also provides various benchmarks. Here we used the memory bandwidth test and reported the aggregate memory bandwidth.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong>LameXP Audio Encoding<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.c-proxy.info\/index.php?q=aHR0cDovL211bGRlci5kdW1td2llZGV1dHNjaC5kZS9ob21lLz9wYWdlPXByb2plY3Rz\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.c-proxy.info\/index.php?q=aHR0cDovL211bGRlci5kdW1td2llZGV1dHNjaC5kZS9ob21lLz9wYWdlPXByb2plY3Rz', 'LameXP']);\" >LameXP<\/a> is highly multi-threaded audio encoding application. The way multi-threading works is that this software assigns each track to be encoded to an individual core. As an example, say you are encoding 4 tracks and have a quad core processor. Instead of waiting for first track to complete encoding to start the encoding of the second track, this software will instead assign each track to a core. It also reads M3U, PLS and ASX playlists as well as Cuesheets.<\/p>\n<p>For this test, I used 30 WAV files obtained from my collection of <em>Gladiator and The Village <\/em>soundtrack CDs and converted them to mp3 using the LAME encoder with maximum quality\/q0 settings.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong>Half Life 2 Lost Coast<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We used the in-built benchmark utility for our gaming tests. Pushing beyond these rated settings is where the fun is at. Overclocking is not an exact science. It varies greatly as it is influenced by a number of factors. Some of these factors can be controlled by the overclocker, some not. For example, memory chips designed from the same wafer can vary in the maximum speeds they can run at. This is how the manufacturer may rate the maximum stable speed that the chip can run at. Therefore, the maximum overclock that these chips reach may not be representative of other memory sticks in this range of products.<\/p>\n<p>To overclock I first tested by setting the RAM at speeds of 1066 MHz, 1333 MHz and 1600 MHz while CPU and NB were at stock frequencies. On the last one, bus was overclocked to reach the maximum RAM overclock. As a result CPU and NorthBridge were also overclocked.<\/p>\n<p>I was able to overclock the memory to a maximum overclock of 1720 MHz. This is not a very large increase, but large enough to allow some leg room for your CPU overclock. The memory was running at a voltage of 1.7V. I tried to raise the votlage to 1.92V but wasn\u2019t able to go over this frequency. That may also be attributed to the fact that I am not using the most overclocking friendly motherboard.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px\" title=\"RAM-OC\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/ramoc-png.png?resize=417%2C404\" border=\"0\" alt=\"RAM-OC\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>Underclocking<\/h1>\n<p>While overclocking is important, I also wanted to see how tight I could run the timings on these modules at various speeds to reduce the latency. Therefore, the timings shown in the results are the lowest that these modules would do at the shown speed. I was surprised by how tight this kit could run at 1066 MHz. At this speed, I could tighten the timings to 6-6-5-15 and run the kit comfortably at 1066 MHz. These timings are right in the vicinity of DDR2 memory timing category. Even though it is rated to run at 9-9-9-27 at 1.7-1.9V at DDR3-1600 MHz speeds, I was able to run this kit at even lower timings. I was able to run this kit at 8-8-7-21 while maintaining stability. While overclocking I was able to achieve a 120MHz overclock on the stock voltage but wasn\u2019t able to progress beyond this speed after even raising the voltage. I would like to reiterate that your overclocking capabilty with this RAM kit might differ as I\u2019m not using the most overclocking friendly motherboard.<\/p>\n<p>Alongwith good performance, Kingston offers a lifetime warranty. While the well known name and reputation of Kingston would give me that extra incentive to buy this RAM, this kit ends up slightly on the pricier side on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104129\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104129', 'Newegg']);\" target=\"_blank\">Newegg<\/a> as it currently retails for $136.
