We already know 8800 GTX and 2900 XT midrange cards from the last generations simply do not cut it with the latest DX10 games at 19×12 and even 16×10. So we will be testing with 4870/512MB, 4870×2, CF-X3, and GTX280.

This time we’re not going to directly compare performance with Catalyst 8.8 – although you can indirectly infer by looking back at our last charts – but now we are going to establish new benchmarks with Catalyst 8.9/Geforce 178.13, our newly overclocked e8600 and our P-35 motherboard. For our Part III article immediately following this one in our GPU Shoot-out series, we will switch out our PCIe 1.0 P-35 motherboard and began testing with our PCIe 2.0 X48 motherboard so that we will compare motherboard performance to each other using the identical set of drivers and hardware. This way we will see 4870X2 and Crossfire improvements by upgrading our platform and we can make continued comparisons with Nvidia’s evolving drivers for their top card, GTX280. We will be able to clearly see if the platform change will make a huge difference and of course we will need to clock our CPU identically on both boards. So for this article to be consistent with our series, we chose 3.99 GHz as it was the last completely stable overclock on the P35 motherboard with e8600. All other settings are identical to both motherboards and we will be able to directly compare the 1.0 PCIe specification to 2.0 as well as crossfire performance of P35’s crossfire 16x + 4x PCIe to x48’s full 16x + 16x specification.

As an interim, in this article – Part 2 – we’re going to show you the overclocked improvements with Catalyst 8.9 and AMD top configurations and also improvements with Nvidia’s top card, 280GTX over its older driver release. As we continue using Catalyst 8.9 in Part 3 we will show further performance improvements by switching out our motherboard to X 48. Future articles that are actually being written and benching that is taking place right now will include Cat 8-10 vs. Geforce 178.24, and then we compare the Nvidia Big Bang Drivers with Catalyst 8-11 and finally with Catalyst 8-12 – the new “Stream” drivers which was released Dec 12. Soon we hope to have this series completely updated. So this Part 2 will be quite a relatively short article and we will get right to testing:

Catalyst 8-9 vs. Geforce 178.13

As before, we continue to test everything at 1650×1050 and 1920×1600 resolutions. These are probably the most common resolutions that most gamers would be using for upper-midrange and top cards from this generation. As in Part I, we decided to test HD4870-512, HD4870X2-2GB [with both cards also crossfired together as crossfireX-3] and the fastest single GPU, Nvidia’s GTX280. As before, we took some of the very latest games and we benchmark them for you at the most demanding in-game settings, with Vista 32 and in DX-10 whenever possible with 4xAA/16xAF – if they can be set in-game and except for Crysis. These settings are probably the most commonly chosen and difficult settings for new games that a modern PC will run. The games we are testing as the same as the last review including, Crysis, Call of Juarez, F.E.A.R., STALKER, Half-Life2, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (ET:QW), Unreal Tournament 3 (UT3), Lost Planet, PT Boats DX10 demo, as well as the synthetic benchmarks, 3DMark06, Vantage and Fur benchmarks. We added GRID and FarCry2 to our “shootout” series, also.

Let’s begin with this round of testing. We are using Catalyst 8-9 and Forceware 177.83 – only final certified drivers are used for our regular testing all through this first part of this review and all through our series. Identical 250GB hard drives are set up with the latest version of Vista32-SP1; each with identical programs, updates and patches – the only difference are the video cards. We used a Gigabyte P35 Crossfire MB – 1.0 PCIe spec and CF 16x + 4x for this Part Two as in our previous article. The testing hardware is detailed in the following chart:

Test Configuration

Test Configuration – Hardware

Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 (reference 3.33 GHz, Overclocked to 3.99Ghz ).

Gigabyte P35-DS3P (Intel P35 chipset, latest BIOS).

4 GB DDR2-800 RAM (4×1 GB, dual-channel).

Nvidia GeForce GTX280 (896 MB, nVidia reference clocks) by BFGTech

ATi Radeon 4750 (512 MB, reference clocks) by Sapphire

ATi Radeon 4750X2 (2 GB, reference clocks) by VisionTek

Onboard RealTek audio

2 – Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 Hard Drives [setup identically, except for the graphics cards]

Test Configuration – Software

ATi Catalyst 8.9, highest quality mip-mapping set in the driver; Catalyst AI set to “advanced”

nVidia Geforce 178.13, high quality driver setting, all optimizations off, LOD clamp enabled.

Windows Vista 32-bit SP31; very latest updates

DirectX August 2008.

All games patched to their latest versions.

Test Configuration – Settings

as noted, vsync off in the driver to “application decide” and never in game.

AA only enabled in-game; all settings at maximum16xAF applied in game or in CP [except as noted]

All results show average, minimum and maximum framerates

Highest quality sound (stereo) used in all games.

Vista32, all DX10 titles were run under DX10 render paths

3DMark06

3DMark06 still remains the number one utility for a system benchmark. However, as long as the rest of the tech world uses it to evaluate gaming performance, we will too. We find it mostly useful for tracking changes in a single system. There are four “mini-games” that it uses for benchmarking graphics, as well as two CPU tests. This is probably because of e8600’s much larger cache and newer optimizations. It is noticeable even with a single HD4870-512MB video card. We can also noted that when you are using a card of the 4870X2 class, it starts to make a significant performance difference. So we decided to do all of our video card testing with e8600 at its stock clock for the last article. The game features playing as two different characters and two very different styles of play: Billy ‘Candle’, a young fugitive accused of murder and his step-uncle and hunter, Reverend Ray, an ex-outlaw who turned to religion. Call of Juarez features it’s Chrome Engine using Shader Model 4 with DirectX 10, so the usage of Vista is mandatory. This benchmark isn’t built into Call of Juarez but is a stand-alone that runs a simple fly-through of a level that’s built to showcase the game’s new DX10 effects. It offers great repeatability and is a good stress test for DX10 features in today’s graphics cards although it is not quite the same as actual gameplay as the game logic and AI are stripped out of the demo. Still it is very useful in comparing video cards performance. When running the benchmark, you get the highlights of the Call of Juarez’ features captioned right on the screen as they are demonstrated:

physics-based particles via geometry shader
fully dynamic real-time shadowing
soft-edged grass and leaves
dense vegetation
HDR lighting
next-gen material shaders
HDR-correct AA

Performing the benchmark is easy. You are presented with a simple menu to choose resolution, anti-aliasing, and two choices of shadow quality options. We set the shadow quality on “high” and the shadow map resolution to its maximum, 2048×2048. At the end, the demo presents you with the minimum frame rate, maximum frame rate, and average frame rate, along with the option to quit or run the benchmark again. The single-player campaign has you assume the role of USA Delta Force, Jake Dunn – referred to as ‘Nomad’ in the game. He is armed with various futuristic weapons and equipment, including a “Nano Suit” which enables the player to perform extraordinary feats, battling both extra-terrestrial and North Korean enemies, in four different locations. Crysis uses DirectX10 for graphics rendering, and includes the same editor that was used by Crytek to create it.

A standalone but related game, Crysis Warhead was released in September, 2008. It is notable for providing a similar graphical experience to Crysis, but with less graphical demands on the PC. We will eventually add it to our benchmarking. CryEngine2 is the game engine used to power Crysis and Warhead. It is an extended version of the CryEngine that powers FarCry. It was developed by id Software and Splash Damage for Windows and published by Activision. The back-story actually takes place as a prequel to Quake II. Quake Wars pits the combined human armies of the Global Defense Force (GDF) against the technologically superior Strogg, an alien race who has come to earth to use humans for spare parts and food, and it allows you to play a part – probably best as an online multi-player experience – in the desperate battles waged around the world in mankind’s desperate war to survive.

Quake Wars is an OpenGL game based on id’s Doom3 game engine with the addition of their MegaTexture technology. It also supports some of the very latest 3D effects seen in today’s latest DX10 games, including soft particles. id’s MegaTexture technology is designed to provide very large maps without having to reuse the same textures over and over again. With MegaTexture, a single extremely large texture is used to handle the basic terrain, with texture management handled by a pixel shader program. By using this technology, which uses a small memory footprint, QW’s artists could construct one very large map that is unique with no repeating terrain tiles.

In this follow-up to the free Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Quake Wars adds controllable vehicles and aircraft as well as multiple AI deployables, asymmetric teams, much bigger maps and the option of computer-controlled ‘bots; and of course, its setting is updated from World War II to 2060. Online and offline play modes are available as PC versions let you play individual campaigns against bots and allows the player combat as both sides. The Human weapons and vehicles are mostly based on modern combat weapons and vehicles but updated for the 50 years into the future. The Strogg have alien weapons and vehicles, some unique and some similar to what the humans have.

For our benchmark we chose the flyby, Salvage Demo, from Quake Wars: Enemy Territory. It is one of the most graphically demanding of all the flybys and is very repeatable and reliable in its results. A flyby of this level is played during the HL2 video stress test and it is very repeatable and quite accurate.

It appears that all of our video cards will hit the maximum 301 Frame rate cap. Only the minimums are interesting. You can certainly experiment with maxed-out filtering on any of these cards.

Lost Planet DX10 benchmark

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition is a Capcom port of an Xbox 360 game which became the first DX10 game, as other games had DX10 patch delays around the same time. The game takes place on the icy planet of E.D.N. III which is filled with monsters, pirates, big guns, and huge bosses. The planet has limited resources and very hostile native inhabitants known as the Akrid, an insect-like race. This frigid world makes a great environment to highlight the benefits of high dynamic range lighting (HDR) as the snow-white environment reflects blinding sunlight, while DX10 particle systems toss snow and ice all around. Akrid contain a thermal energy source inside their body that are used to provide Wayne with both heat and energy. This energy is vital to your health in the game, instead of relying on a traditional health meter to keep you alive and also moving along.

The game looks great in both DirectX 9 and 10 and there isn’t really much of a difference between the two versions. Shadows look slightly better in DirectX 10. It seems that Lost Planet is primarily using DirectX 10 to increase performance, not to produce advanced graphics effects much beyond DX9c. Unfortunately, the DX10 version doesn’t look that much better, especially in motion. You may be able to pick out more shader effects in screenshots, but these aren’t particularly noticeable when you’re actually playing the game, and the DX10 version still runs slower than the DX9 version.

There are two versions of this benchmark. One was released as a stand-alone demo and the other is in-game. We chose the in-game demo from the retail copy of Lost Planet released on June 26, 2007 and updated through Steam to the latest version for our benchmark runs. This run isn’t completely scripted as the bugs spawn and act a little differently each time you run the demo. The benchmark is more of a scripted flyby of the level with “noclip” turned on; the bugs rely on game AI to direct their actions. This means the benchmark won’t make an absolutely perfect comparison between different hardware setups, even with identical game settings. So we ran it many times.

Lost Planet’s Snow and Cave demos are run continuously in-game and blend into each other. Here are our benchmark results with eighth Unreal game, but it has been named in relation to the engine it runs on. UT3 is a first-person shooter and online multiplayer video game by Epic Games. It was released for Windows on November, 2007. While many games share the same Unreal3 engine, the developers can decide how high the system requirements will be by increasing the level of detail. Unreal Tournament3 provides a good balance between image quality and performance, rendering complex scenes even on lower-end PCs. Of course, on high-end graphics cards you can really turn up the detail. UT3 is primarily an online multiplayer title offering several game modes, and it also includes an offline single-player game with a campaign that includes team members with their own personalities. UT3’s vehicles have been split into two factions, the Axon vehicles and Necris vehicles – and every player is also equipped with a personal hoverboard.

For our tests, we used the latest game patch for Unreal Tournament3. The game doesn’t have a built-in benchmarking tool, however, so we used FRAPS as well as HardwareOC’s benchmark tool which does a fly-by of a chosen level. Here we note that performance numbers reported are a bit higher than compared to in-game. The map we use is called “Containment” and it is one of the most demanding of the fly-bys. Our tests were run at resolutions of 1920 x 1200 and 1680 x 1050 with the UT3’s in-game graphical options set to their maximum values. One drawback of the way the UT3 engine is designed is that there is no support for anti-aliasing built in. While video card vendors like have found ways to force this in their drivers control panel, we did not force it. Again, we use the “timedemo-style” of benchmark for UT3. A “demo” is recorded in the game and a set number of frames are saved in a file for playback. GSC Game World released a prequel story expansion on September 5, 2008 as “Prologue: S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Clear Sky” and will also eventually become a DX10 benchmark for us, later on. In case you didn’t know, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. stands for “Specially Trained in Artifact, Lifeform and Kinetics – Energy Retrieval”.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. takes place in an area called “The Zone”, which encompasses roughly 30 square kilometers and features a slice of Chernobyl extending south from Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant with geographical changes for artistic license. This game features “a living breathing world” with highly developed NPC creature AI which presents many realistic behaviors in non-scripted events. The game engine was designed so that animal behavior is calculated even if the player is in a different part of the world. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. uses the X-ray Engine, a DirectX8.1/9 Shader model 3.0 graphics engine featuring HDR, parralax and normal mapping, soft shadows, motion blur, weather effects and day-to-night cycles. As with other engines using deferred shading, the X-ray Engine does not support anti-alising with dynamic lighting enabled. However, a form of anti-aliasing can be enabled that uses a technique to blur the image to give an impression of anti-aliasing.

Our benchmarks for this DX9c game are timedemo runs called “short” and “building”. The maximums should mostly be disregarded although the minimums and averages are fairly representative of what you actually encounter in game. The charts are mistakenly labeled as While the instant replay can be used as many times as the player wants, the flashback feature can only be used for a limited number of times that are determined by the game’s difficulty setting. There are several types of competitions for different cars and several tracks from different countries, including Japan, United States and European tracks.

Race Driver: GRID uses Codemasters’ own Ego engine which is an evolved version of the same Neon engine they used in their previous release, DIRT. However, the damage code was completely rewritten to allow for persistent damage environments. For GRID, we used “Real World” benching. The same section of the same “San Francisco” track is tested repeatedly – after the other cars have passed – and the minimum, maximum and average frame rates are averaged, using FRAPS. This benchmark was run many dozens of times to get relatively close figures and anything outside the “norm” was tossed out. This chart is fairly representative of what you will encounter in-game when you are the only car on the track. Since the game is eminently playable on all of our cards, we only tested at 19×12.

Wow, this game “belongs” to ATi. What can we say? The 4870-512MB performs very close to the more expensive and generally faster GTX280. Although 4870X2 scales OK over 4870, crossfireX-3 shows much less improvement except in the minimum frame rates.

Conclusion

The “Feel” of the Video cards:

Again, this gets very subjective. As mentioned previously in Part I, the Nvidia control panel seems to be stuck in a time warp while ATi’s has appeared to progress. “Centered timings” still could not be enabled easily in the Nvidia CP, and a convoluted workaround was necessary. Both sets of drivers are very mature, except for ATi’s CrossfireX-3 drivers. This reviewer gives a slight edge to Nvidia’s IQ over ATi’s although you have to be really nit-picky to notice. The cards themselves can easily be ranked in terms of performance, 1-3 – top-to-bottom:

1. 4870×2

2. 280GTX

3. HD4870

CF-x3 is a little faster than x2 and becoming less of a curiosity than with previous drivers. We expect the situation will improve as we are testing with Catalyst 8-12 now for future articles in our series.

The 4870×2 is very smooth and minimizes any microstutter that is usually apparent in multi-GPU solutions. It is ideal for 19×12 resolution in this reviewer’s opinion. If you must have a single-GPU solution, the GTX280 stands a notch above the HD4870. Even where the frame rates were very close, the Nvidia GPU felt more “solid” than 4870-512MB, and it would be a good choice for 19×12. 4870-512MB just falls short and would be excellent for playing the newest and most demanding PC games at 16×10. In the next parts of our review, we will compare the 1GB versions of HD4870 to the 512MB versions and explore possible 512MB VRAM limitations using 4870-512MB paired with 4870X2-2GB in crossfireX-3.

We will be back very soon with Part III of our testing – still using Catalyst 8-9 and Geforce 178.13 – for an exact P35 vs. X48 motherboard comparison. That will let you know you if our new X48 motherboard’s PCIe 2.0 specification makes any difference performance-wise over our [now current] PCIe 1.0 spec’d P-35 motherboard. We will also be exploring X48 motherboard’s crossfireX-3 performance – [then] unlimited with 16x +16x full bandwidth – over our [current P35 motherboard’s] 16x + 4x crossfire solution. Thus, we will be able to compare 4870-512MB with 4870-1GB and different crossfireX-3 combinations with 4870×2-2GB to see if the 512MB it is now forced to share with a 4870-512MB card, limits performance over “true” crossfireX-3 with 4870X2 and 4870-1GB in the second slot. Of course, we will also watch Nvidia’s drivers evolve over the same period to see if they managed to get more performance out of their Tesla architecture. We expect to also explore Nvidia’s propriatory PhysX with their second Big Bang Drivers (180.48) vs. Catalyst 8-12 and ATi’s now-enabled “Stream” drivers which is meant to take on Nvidia’s CUDA.

Here is our planned “GPU-Shootout” series:

Part I – Cat 8.8 (8/20/08) vs Geforce 177.41 (06/26/08) (p35 MB platform)[done]

Part II – and we expect to also explore Nvidia GTX280/290 SLi on an X58 motherboard.

Stay tuned. All five parts of our planned testing has been completed – with Part VI testing in progress – and we think we will have some very interesting articles for you to read very shortly as you plan your own coming upgrades.

Mark Poppin

ABT Editor

[7814,7

post-1752","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-articles","category-technology
["GET
