new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This year\u2019s NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) show had <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">written\/unwritten <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">themes:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 0pt 72pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: symbol;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">bigger, faster, cheaper.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 0pt 72pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: symbol;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">close enough is good enough.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 0pt 72pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: symbol;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">what <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">happens when<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) \u201csteals\u201d the broadcasters\u2019 spectrum<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Dr. Richmond explained the NAB attendee\u2019s dilemma<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, \u201cYou see, when the mind houses two personalities, there&#8217;s always a conflict, a battle.\u201d <\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The eye candy was there <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2013 stereoscopic<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> 3D, eye-popping\/bank account<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">sucking cameras, consolidation\/outsourcing, mix and match<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> NLEs (non-linear editors), MPEG-4 solutions and online\/mobile DTV solutions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Mobile<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">is important for the broadcast folks to get right, hence<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> several <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">wireless carrier <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">business deals to monetize their content.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Anyone who could was hyping their involvement in <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Avatar<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> and the Augusta Masters (looked dynamite in 3D<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2026<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">if you\u2019re into golf).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Camera Glory<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: medium none;\" NAB this year, <\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Sony\u2019s Executive <\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Hiroshi Yoshioka<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> and his team put their best images forward with a full range of 3D and HD solutions for high-end professionals as well as event videographers and \u201cothers.\u201d\u00a0 They and the other major players showed exciting hardware\/software solutions and results you could almost <\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">reach out and touch. <\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Photo &#8211; NAB<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Sony, Panasonic, RED, Canon and others <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">showed<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> super 3D cameras<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> but for all the bragging rights, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">there were few prospects. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">As one attendee noted, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cI can pay $10,000 vs<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">.<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> $55,000 and no one \u2013<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> least of all<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> the viewer \u2013 <\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">can <\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">tell<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> the difference?\u00a0 Cripes<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> I\u2019m trying to upgrade the whole back room for $100,000!\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Networks and stations still have to finish upgrading to High<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Def. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Every <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">network has a 3D broadcast initiative<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> including ESPN and Discovery<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> that will launch 3D channels later this year<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Most of the stations are also struggling with delivering three-screen service \u2013 TV, online, mobile <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2013<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> to catc<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">h every set of eyeballs possible<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The movie industry ma<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">y be coming off a healthy year<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">but like the Nets and stations<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> they cut down on the number of engineers who attended \u201cjust to stay abreast of technology.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The production\/NLE folks \u2013 Quantel, Autodesk, Adobe, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Grass<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Valley<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, Boris FX, CineForm and others \u2013 really put the<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ir best collective feet forward. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Doing it better, faster, cheaper really <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">helps in post-production <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">because <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">every<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> engineering group is<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> operating leaner.\u00a0 So <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">they\u2019re<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> turning to<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> IT-based, non-proprietary solutions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Norman<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> got a little confused but noted, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cShe might have fooled me, but she didn&#8217;t fool my mother.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Everywhere we looked<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">we saw a huge <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">demand for <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">what<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">really<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> matters<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2026<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">storage<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: medium none ;\" <\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Hollywood<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> and broadcast production\/post-production\/\u201dlater\u201d folks keep their professional content just like ordinary folks.\u00a0\u00a0 They\u2019ve got raw footage, processed content and finished materials on flash, tape, film, discs\u2026almost everywhere.\u00a0 Your stuff is your life, their stuff is their livelihood.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">All of the HD, 3D <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">stuff at NAB <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">produces<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> trainloads of content that has to be stored. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The industry is produc<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ing an order of magnitude more data than just a few years ago. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">How much is an order of magnitude?\u00a0 According to one of the DVDA members at the show<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2026<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201c<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">a huge crapload<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">.<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">That\u2019s a lot!!!!<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The digital files <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">from the<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> most recent movies are more t<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">han a <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">P<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">etabyte in size <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2013<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> on<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> par with Pentagon storage requirements. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The Big style=\"font-size: small;\">growth<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> business.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">How good and why?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 6pt 0pt 0pt 54pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">resolution and stereoscopic content <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">requires more digital storage<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 6pt 0pt 0pt 54pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Storage technology<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> and PB)<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 6pt 0pt 0pt 54pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Bits deteriorate. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">A few here\u2026few there\u2026viola<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> it\u2019s emails, IMs, whatever and no one saves the stuff!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">They have a tough enough time trying to figure out how to save the final product. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">But the broadcast\/movie industry is spending more time, money, effort on preserving the content they have than in developing new content.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The right storage technologies and the right content rotation
