{"id":18180,"date":"2010-05-08T07:31:56","date_gmt":"2010-05-08T06:31:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=18180"},"modified":"2011-06-14T04:24:06","modified_gmt":"2011-06-14T03:24:06","slug":"gtx470-performance-test-part-2-windows-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/gtx470-performance-test-part-2-windows-7\/","title":{"rendered":"GTX470 Performance Test Part 2: Windows 7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--pagetitle:Introduction--><strong><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Introduction<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=17550\" target=\"_blank\">part 1 of this article<\/a>, I compared a GTX285 to a GTX470 using Windows XP SP3 (32 bit), and I found that the GTX470 did rather poorly overall in comparison, coming off the same speed or slower in most games. So part 2 of this article will retest the GTX470 under <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">Windows 7 (64 bit)<\/span>. The GTX285 has not been retested as I\u2019m quite confident it has \u201cgold standard\u201d drivers on XP. For your convenience however, the GTX285\u2019s XP results have been included in the graphs to demonstrate the reference score.<\/p>\n<p>The system setup, settings and benchmarks are exactly the same as in part 1, except of course Windows 7 (64 bit) is being utilized too.<\/p>\n<p>As in the last article, great care has been taken to ensure the <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=17590\" target=\"_blank\">hidden super-sampling<\/a> is not affecting the scores. Many suspect Direct3D games were retested with TrAA off to ensure it wasn\u2019t a factor. Also TrAA was off in all OpenGL games, as it was in part 1.<\/p>\n<p>Also on Win7, all DX10 games were forced into DX9 render paths to ensure comparable testing, and to make sure full scene super-sampling wasn\u2019t active. The latter was already faster than the GTX285, which means Win7 extends the GTX470\u2019s lead further.<\/p>\n<p>But the clear standout here is <em>Far Cry 2<\/em>, where even the DX9 path sees a massive <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">48.79%<\/span> performance gain on Win7, making it far faster than either the GTX470 or GTX285 XP scores.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, when I set <em>Far Cry 2<\/em> to DX10 at 2560&#215;1600 with 2xAA and maxed out its DX10 settings, it still ran faster than DX9 did at 1920&#215;1200 with 2xAA, scoring about <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">48<\/span> FPS. <em>Far Cry 2<\/em> is one of the rare games that actually runs faster under DX10 and looks better at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the games showed no real performance change by moving to Win7.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\/\/ <![CDATA[\ngoogle_ad_client = \"pub-7021221536180758\";\n\/* 468x60, created 11\/11\/09 *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"1949837292\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 468;\ngoogle_ad_height = 60;\n\/\/ ]]><\/script><br \/>\n<script src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:2560x1600--><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2560&#215;1600<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18189\" title=\"2560 Text\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2560-Text.png?resize=248%2C356\" alt=\"2560 Text\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2560-Text.png?resize=248%2C356 248w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2560-Text-208x300.png 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 248px) 100vw, 248px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18188\" title=\"2560 Graph\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2560-Graph.png?resize=528%2C736\" alt=\"2560 Graph\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2560-Graph.png?resize=528%2C736 528w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2560-Graph-215x300.png 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here we see <em>Call of Duty 4<\/em> tank on Win7, making the GTX470 drop even further away from the GTX285\u2019s XP reference score. This title was retested several times \u2013 including with TrAA disabled \u2013 and the score was quite repeatable.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the games see no real change between XP and Win7.<\/p>\n<p>I was unable to get <em>Serious Sam HD<\/em> to launch on Win7, and I\u2019m still investigating why.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\/\/ <![CDATA[\ngoogle_ad_client = losses in the modernized versions of <em>Quake 1<\/em> and <em>Quake 2<\/em>, which puts the GTX470 even further behind the GTX285.<\/p>\n<p>We also see a small performance gain in <em>Quake Wars<\/em>, and very large performance gains in <em>Prey<\/em> and <em>Doom 3<\/em>. <em>Prey<\/em> and <em>Doom 3<\/em> still run slower compared to comparable ATi hardware, but at least on Win7 the sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 527px) 100vw, 527px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Win7 does a little better by having a lower performance hit from 8xAA overall compared to XP, mostly thanks to <em>Prey\u2019s<\/em> vastly improved performance.<\/p>\n<p>But again, any situation with a lower 4xAA score and also a lower performance hit to 8xAA is a hollow victory since it means 4xAA performance is lower than it should be, and hence skews the resulting percentage calculation.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\/\/ <![CDATA[\ngoogle_ad_client = Assault<\/em> and <em>UT 2004<\/em> continue the downward spiral on the GTX470. Under Win7 the GTX470 offers just over half the performance of the GTX285 on XP. Both games were retested with TrAA off on Win7, but they still couldn\u2019t come close to the GTX285 running TrAA. This is clearly abysmal performance.<\/p>\n<p>But then we see something amazing happen in <em>Call of Duty 1<\/em>, <em>Quake 3<\/em>, <em>Return to Castle Wolfenstein<\/em> and <em>Unreal Tournament 99<\/em>, with the GTX470 on Win 7 offering absolutely massive performance gains compared to XP. The performance gains also allow the GTX470 to far surpass the GTX285\u2019s reference scores.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s ironic that some of these games are 11 years old, but demonstrate some of the best performance gains witnessed on a GTX470. This is on a 64 bit OS released just last year too, I might add. Once again we see the value of testing old games with cranked settings on new hardware, and I would&#8217;ve never believed these results had I not seen them for myself.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\/\/ <![CDATA[\ngoogle_ad_client = \"pub-7021221536180758\";\n\/* 468x60, created 11\/11\/09 *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"1949837292\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 468;\ngoogle_ad_height = 60;\n\/\/ ]]><\/script><br \/>\n<script src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:Conclusion--><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>So the question of whether the GTX470 runs better on Windows 7 than it does on Windows XP has been answered. The answer is yes, but not by much overall. Like XP, the Win7 drivers need a lot of work. While a handful of titles like <em>Far Cry 2<\/em>, <em>Prey<\/em> and <em>Doom 3<\/em> showed massive performance gains, other titles like <em>UT 2004<\/em> and <em>Pacific Assault<\/em> were much slower on Win7, and offered absolutely abysmal performance. But the important fact here is that most of the other games were largely unchanged.<\/p>\n<p>Since some of the scores moved around a lot by simply using a different OS, it proves the GTX470\u2019s poor performance isn\u2019t from architectural limitations, but rather from driver issues. On both OSes the current GTX470 drivers aren\u2019t robust enough to handle non-standard settings in titles that are no longer \u201chot\u201d, and the Win7 tests confirmed my suspicions. But the good news is that this can be fixed because I\u2019ve seen this kind of thing many times before, including during the G80 launch days.<\/p>\n<p>As of this article, all of my testing will be done on Windows 7 (64 bit). I have more articles planned for the GTX470, including an in-depth image quality analysis, a bottlenecking investigation, and some CPU scaling tests.
