In the GPU business, being first to the market with parts based on a new generation of DirectX is critical. AMD got the timing of the launch of their DX11 parts perfectly as Microsoft released Windows 7 in October which included DirectX 11. Nvidia launched their first DX11 parts in March this year, giving AMD a 6 month head start which AMD took full advantage of as they reported very good numbers on the number of HD 5000 cards sold.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/AMDATISlide1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto\" title=\"AMD-ATI-Slide-1\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/AMDATISlide1_thumb.jpg?resize=400%2C262\" border=\"0\" alt=\"AMD-ATI-Slide-1\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The video card that I&#8217;m testing today is the HD 5670, which was launched at the magical $99 price point. As evident from the above slide, AMD knows that 66% of their video card sales are in the less than $100 segment. Therefore it is very critical to have a good performing GPU placed where the competition is fierce and profit margins are thin. Remember that last year AMD launched another video card, the HD 4770, that brought amazing performance to this price point.<\/p>\n<p>The HD 5670 will be looking to offer a mix of DirectX 11 and amazing performance at this $99 price point. Today&#8217;s review sample was sent to us by Visiontek. This video card uses a custom cooler rather than the reference HD 5670 cooler. This should, in theory, provide better temperatures and as a result, overclock higher. One of the reasons for that is the use of Battlefield Bad Company 2 as its cover art which happens to be my favorite game at this point of time. <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=18359\" target=\"_blank\">Here<\/a> is an excellent review about this game by my fellow editor, Leon. Mostly a white affair, the box is not too big. This is to be expected given that the card is small too because of its mid range status. The box does a good job of explaining the most common features and specifications of the video card such as Crossfire-X capability, 1GB GDDR5 video memory, DirectX 11, Blu-Ray decoding and most importantly the lifetime warranty. We are told that our review card has the Gen1 cooler, while the retail card on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814129153&amp;Tpk=visiontek%20hd%205670\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814129153&amp;Tpk=visiontek%20hd%205670', 'Newegg.com']);\" target=\"_blank\">Newegg.com<\/a> has the Gen2 cooler. This is a two slot cooler, so it will block the PCI\/PCI-E slot adjacent to the PCI-E slot it is put in. The video card offers HDMI, DVI and VGA outputs. Therefore, an auxiliary power connector is not required. This omission is always welcome as it means lower power usage for decent gaming performance. Fur rendering is especially adapted to overheat the GPU and that\u2019s why Furmark is also a perfect stability and stress test tool (also called GPU burner) for the graphics card. This benchmark requires an OpenGL 2.0 compliant graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 5\/6\/7\/8 (and higher), AMD\/ATI Radeon 9600 (and higher) or a S3 Graphics Chrome 400 series with the latest graphics drivers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furmark was left running for a period of 10 minutes after which the final load temperature was measured. The maximum temperature while gaming should be lower than this.<\/p>\n<h1>Power Usage (Total System Consumption)<\/h1>\n<p>Furmark 1.8.0 was run in extreme burning mode with the fur rendered at 640\u00d7480 with no AA. Measuring power usage with Furmark is the worst case scenario. We used MSI Afterburner 1.5 for overclocking. After all the dust was settled, here are the overclocked frequencies. 1010MHz\/1080 MHz (core\/memory).That is some serious overclock. Let me repeat. Over 1GHz on the core! That\u2019s a 30%\u00a0 and a 8% overclock on the core and memory respectively. It features a fictional story set in the near-future. The most well-received part of the game is its multiplayer modes, where you earn experience points for kills and completing certain tasks online. These experience points unlock certain abilities and new and more powerful guns which can tip the balance in your favor in online matches.<br \/>\nFor testing this game, I recorded a timedemo on the \u201cVacant\u201d map. The demo was recorded while trying to capture some of the most graphically intense sections of the game, like throwing a smoke grenade and then walking and shooting in it, which really brings all the cards to their knees resulting in the minimum FPS. The demo was played back at normal speed with the demo command from the console. The Dunia engine features Dynamic Weather, dynamic fire propagation (influenced by weather system), realistic fire, physics, full day\/night cycles. Realistic fire is a high point of this game. It has the best looking depiction of a fire in a video game to date. Just Cause 2 uses the Avalanche 2.0 engine, which is an updated version of the engine used in the original game. This newer version of the engine only supports DX10.0, therefore the game only runs on Windows Vista and Windows 7. We are testing the latest game in this series to grace the PC platform. The PC version has some new content compared to the console versions including, \u201cnew costumes and a new and improved mercenary\u2019s mode with three times as many enemies.\u201d This game features support for Nvidia\u2019s GeForce 3D Vision glasses. In that aspect, the HD 5670 doesn\u2019t fail. It starts off on a good note with the price. AMD has priced this card in the less than $100 market segment. The card also doesn\u2019t require an auxiliary power connector which leads to lower power consumption and use in a hybrid gaming HTPC machine. The custom cooler from Visiontek keeps the temperature very cool and is almost a whisper at full 100% load. It even allowed me to overclock the core clock to over 1GHz, which offers a good performance increase in our benchmarks. With a lifetime warranty, Visiontek offers an attractive bundle.<\/p>\n<p>The price on this card on Newegg is slightly on the higher side, with the Visiontek HD 5670 1GB being the most expensive card on Newegg ($129.99) at the time of the writing. This is $30 more than AMD\u2019s $99 launch price point. However, 512 MB versions of the HD 5670 can be had for as low as $84.99.
