As with everything that we publish at AlienBabelTech, the opinions expressed are solely those of the individual writer and do not necessarily reflect the views and the opinions of the rest of the ABT staff.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"> <\/span><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"> \u2013Mark Poppin,<\/span> <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">ABT Senior Editor<\/span><\/span><\/h6>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"doc-contents\">\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Your Hardware Selection Depends on \u201cTheir\u201d Ecosystems <\/span><\/h1>\n<div id=\"oxj6\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"height: 359px; width: 476px;\" src=\"http:\/\/docs.google.com\/File?id=dfp9p5h9_390gnwvt3dw_b\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.5in;\"><em> \u201cI found a cure for the plague of the 20th century, and now I&#8217;ve lost it!<\/em> <strong>\u2013 Dr. Robert Campbell\/Sean Connery, Medicine Man (1992) \u2013 Cinergi Pictures<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Today, two things seem to define who you are\u2026your significant other and your computing device.<\/p>\n<p>One is (<em>hopefully<\/em>) permanent, the other changing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hint<\/strong> &#8212; the device is the one that <strong><em>should <\/em><\/strong>change more frequently.<\/p>\n<p>You can (and probably do) have several devices.\u00a0 They don\u2019t seem to mind when you prefer one over the other or when another enters your life.\u00a0 Try that in your personal relationship and it will go over like a lead balloon!<\/p>\n<p>We came to that epiphany when our son just had to have one of those new tablets for school and other stuff.<\/p>\n<p>That was the same line he used when he \u201cneeded\u201d:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> A new notebook<\/li>\n<li> A new smartphone<\/li>\n<li> A new netbook<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>None of the devices eliminated any of the others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be Prepared<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When our son heads for school, out with friends or goes anywhere, it looks like he\u2019s packing for a three-day trip.\u00a0 They all go into his backpack\u2026just in case.<\/p>\n<p>Our \u2013 his, yours, mine &#8212; fascination\/lust\/commitment has very little to do with the device, rather what it allows us to do.<\/p>\n<p>You can thank or blame the chip manufacturers (ARM, Intel, others) for helping companies cram their computer chips into more and more systems, devices, things.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18555\" title=\"Untitled-1\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-13.jpg?resize=400%2C277\" alt=\"Untitled-1\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-13.jpg?resize=400%2C277 400w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-13-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 2 &#8211; They\u2019re Everywhere \u2013 <\/strong>The chip industry is working diligently to cram their processors into everything.\u00a0 The best way to predict where we\u2019ll see the next big advance is to see where they are focusing their development assistance efforts.\u00a0 Soon we\u2019ll be there.<strong> Source &#8212; IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Making the right device decision isn\u2019t as easy as Dr. Campbell\u2019s jungle cure, <em>\u201cI gave Alka-Seltzer to a kid with a belly ache.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Most of us don\u2019t get real excited about the computers in cars, healthcare equipment or industrial systems.\u00a0 But introduce a new computing\/communications device to solid\/rave reviews and people will fly half-way around the globe to stand in the cold for hours.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll buy it sight unseen because of what it is going to allow them, free them to do.<\/p>\n<p>All of this excitement and fervor about reshaping computers overlooks the facts that computers \u2013 real computers \u2013 are the backbone of business, industry, government and yes\u2026entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re feeling a bit like Dr. Crane, <em>\u201cWait a minute. I don&#8217;t understand.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Computer sales remain strong and forecasts are very optimistic. First quarter PC shipments were up 8+% over the same period the year before.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While we normally think of PCs in terms of desktops and laptops, industry analysts project that the growth will occur in all categories because organizations are beginning the long-awaited PC-replacement cycle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18556\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-22.jpg?resize=400%2C324\" alt=\"Untitled-2\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-22.jpg?resize=400%2C324 400w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-22-300x243.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 3 &#8211; In Every Form \u2013 <\/strong>You may only think of a desktop or notebook computer but today\u2019s PCs come in an increasing array of shapes and forms.\u00a0 Somewhere, there\u2019s one (or more) options for all of your wants, needs.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8212; IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Excitement Boost<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The momentum could produce more than $100 billion in global sales over the next12 months.<\/p>\n<p>The versatile notebooks will experience a solid increase in unit volumes, but year-to-year revenue increases will be modest because of the growing popularity of low-cost netbooks.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18557\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-31.jpg?resize=400%2C226\" alt=\"Untitled-3\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-31.jpg?resize=400%2C226 400w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-31-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 4 &#8211; When Performance Counts \u2013 <\/strong>Netbook, tablet, smartphone\/book producers all optimistically say they will replace (kill) notebook systems.\u00a0 The problem is, they forgot to ask us \u2013 the users.\u00a0 People just keep buying newer, better, more powerful, less expensive notebook\/laptop systems.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Notebooks\/laptops have increased in power, performance, features and capabilities while coming down in weight and price.<\/p>\n<p>Notebooks\/laptops are designed for the people who want to do it all \u2013 photo\/video editing\/enjoyment, music storage\/play, iNet surfing, social site updates, research, write, analyze, communicate.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-41.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18558\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-41.jpg?resize=360%2C280\" alt=\"Untitled-4\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-41.jpg?resize=360%2C280 360w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-41-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 5 &#8211; On the Road \u2013 <\/strong>For the user who wants to do some major video post production; carry huge filing cabinets of documents, data; tap into their music library and keep their complete family photo\/movie library with them, nothing equals the capabilities of the notebook\/laptop computer.\u00a0 There\u2019s just something about having it all that can\u2019t be replaced by any device.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Asus defined a new computer category \u2013 netbooks \u2013 about two years ago. Small, stripped-down portables, their key features were that they were cheap ($300 &#8211; $500), lightweight, good battery life, cheap.<\/p>\n<p>Coda Research projects by 2017 there will be over 100 million netbook users worldwide generating huge volumes traffic per month,<\/p>\n<p>Netbook satisfaction has been \u201cmixed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most folks buy them for their mobility, even though 60 percent of the users never take them out of the house.\u00a0 Then, they complain about the performance and lack of \u201creal computer\u201d functionality.<\/p>\n<p>As Dr. Crane said when referring to the real buying decision, <em>\u201cclosing your eyes won&#8217;t make it disappear.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Who are they kidding?\u00a0 They bought it for the price !!!!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cannibalism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some assert that netbooks will cannibalize notebook sales; but increasingly, folks are seeing them being bought as second or third systems&#8211;especially if you\u2019re plopping on the couch.<\/p>\n<p>Asus and Acer showed off some powerful netbooks at next week\u2019s Netbook Summit &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.netbooksummit.com\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.netbooksummit.com\/', 'www.netbooksummit.com']);\" ><strong>www.netbooksummit.com<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; \u00a0that are still inexpensive (read <em>cheap<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>In fact, muvee demonstrated their netbook version of Reveal 8 video production software on Asus netbooks.\u00a0 In the preview, it was fast, looked good and the content was all ready to post to the Web which is great since it done on a netbook!<\/p>\n<p>The online aspect of computers is becoming more and more important.\u00a0\u00a0 By 2014, ABI analysts feel that the majority of netbooks and laptops will be sold with embedded 3G capabilities to contribute even more to our wireless data traffic (it\u2019s horrendous right now!).<\/p>\n<p>Of course, we all know that it was smartphones and Apple\u2019s iPhone way back in 2008 that delivered the different way of staying in touch\u2026surfing the Web\u2026keeping from being lost\u2026watching videos\/movies\u2026listening to music\u2026oh heck, everything!<\/p>\n<p>Actually, the smartphone was a long way from what you\u2019d classify as a \u201ccomputer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With over 500,000 applications and more than 5 million downloads, the iPhone quickly became the fast, easy solution when you\u2019re away from your computer.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18560\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=400%2C235\" alt=\"Untitled-5\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=400%2C235 400w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-5-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 6 &#8211; Phone Apps \u2013 <\/strong>It\u2019s hard to believe that smartphone apps went from zero to hundreds of thousands in less than two years.\u00a0 With every iPhone or other smartphone sold, people immediately go online to buy the 10-30 applications they just can\u2019t seem to live without.\u00a0 Everything is increasingly at your fingertips.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The product category has helped contribute to mobile data traffic \u2013 video, music, games, stuff &#8212; but they have done little in the way of creating content.<\/p>\n<p>Now it is the tablet, iPad and all of its wannabes that will annihilate netbooks, take a big chunk out of notebooks and at times even hurt smartphone (iPhone) sales.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-61.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18561\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-61.jpg?resize=377%2C298\" alt=\"Untitled-6\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-61.jpg?resize=377%2C298 377w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-61-300x237.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 377px) 100vw, 377px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 7 \u2013 Yes, But \u2013 <\/strong>When people murmur the word tablet system, the only thing they think they\u2019ll see is an iPad.\u00a0 There are tons of options out there and more coming every day.\u00a0 Companies in the Pacific Basin are working round-the-clock to get their designs and begin producing their alternatives.\u00a0 Have to admit, this model is much more attractive than Jobs!\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8212; Acer<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One M+ WI-Fi and 3G iPads sold in only a couple of weeks. Not too shabby.\u00a0 And that\u2019s only in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>If their suppliers could get touch screen production yields above miserable to slightly painful, more of the oversized iPod Touch-like units could be sold.<\/p>\n<p>The sale\/download of iPad apps amazed even Steve.<\/p>\n<p>While we touch type, the ability to move icons, content, whatever around simply by moving our fingers and hands is awesome\u2026just awesome!!<\/p>\n<p>But creating content for us is really where the rubber meets the road.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re only going to text or send a few things here\/there, the smartphone swish screen is O.K.\u00a0 You know, quick notes, check\/answer an email\u2026fine<\/p>\n<p>The flat keyboard feel of the iPhone\/iPad\/tablet reminds us of the painful pre-chiclet keyboards.\u00a0 Typing was slow, laborious, awkward.\u00a0 Didn\u2019t like them then, don\u2019t like \u2018em now.<\/p>\n<p>The keyboard of many of the netbooks is small\/cramped but O.K.\u00a0 For writing, note taking, emails, send\/receive documents\/attachments the netbook works<\/p>\n<p>The keyboard of a real notebook\/laptop is comfortable.\u00a0 Plus, you can have the speed, power and storage capacity (500GB) to have all of your audio, photo, video, document, ppt, materials with you.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, our son says he also has that when he packs up his netbook, iPad, iPhone.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, for crying out loud!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Go-along Storage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s also packing two 500GB USB HDs in that backpack\u2026just in case.<\/p>\n<p>Every one of his computing\/communications devices is different.<\/p>\n<p>Every one has a different set of tools, applications.<\/p>\n<p>Every one works beautifully in its individual walled garden.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18562\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-7.jpg?resize=400%2C267\" alt=\"Untitled-7\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-7.jpg?resize=400%2C267 400w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-7-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 8 &#8211; Garden Bound &#8212; <\/strong>Application gardens can be beautiful things to behold.\u00a0 Pick the applications that you just have to have, and life is good.\u00a0 You can do \u201ceverything\u201d with the device.\u00a0 The only challenge comes when you want to move from one device to another, because no matter how much you try, you can\u2019t do everything with just one device.\u00a0 Most of us use three to four devices every day.\u00a0 Moving from one walled garden to another isn\u2019t fun, isn\u2019t always easy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>People like our kid chose their devices not because of the strength, capabilities or performance of the hardware but on the solutions\/applications built for the specific environment.<\/p>\n<p>Moving content from one environment \u2013 at least for him \u2013 is a creative challenge, a game (the kid is <strong><em>not <\/em><\/strong>well!!).<\/p>\n<p>Watching the kids do so much with their devices, the wife has said she\u2019s ready to make a bold move and enhance her computing, communications capabilities with a new <strong><em>something. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She scoured the Web.\u00a0 Spent evenings and weekends in stores.<\/p>\n<p>About the time she\u2019s ready to lay down our credit card, someone introduced <strong><em>something <\/em><\/strong>new.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18563\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-8.jpg?resize=300%2C284\" alt=\"Untitled-8\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-8.jpg?resize=300%2C284 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Untitled-8.jpg 322w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 9 &#8211;
