{"id":18740,"date":"2010-05-30T01:01:46","date_gmt":"2010-05-30T00:01:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=18740"},"modified":"2010-06-03T15:39:36","modified_gmt":"2010-06-03T14:39:36","slug":"cooler-masters-elite-430-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/cooler-masters-elite-430-case\/","title":{"rendered":"The Cooler Master Elite 430 Black Case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\/\/ <![CDATA[\n   google_ad_client = \"pub-7021221536180758\"; \/* 468x60, created 11\/11\/09 *\/ google_ad_slot = \"1949837292\"; google_ad_width = 468; google_ad_height = 60;\n\/\/ ]]><\/script><br \/>\n<script src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>The brand new Cooler Master Elite 430 Black is an interesting case.\u00a0 It has many of the features of high end cases &#8211; including dust filters, and the interior is nicely painted black.\u00a0 It would be considered budget at $59.99 but it does not compete with the Gladiator 600 which costs about ten dollars more and to which we gave an outstanding award <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=10039\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 Rather this Elite 430 case is a roomy mid-tower that will fit the largest graphics card(s), yet it only comes with one fan, giving the consumer many options to customize it for themselves.\u00a0 Naturally we are extreme and we really put this case and our hardware through its paces with a GTX 480 plus an open-design 8800-GTX as PhysX card and FurMark&#8217;s most intense stability test to test the Elite 430&#8217;s thermal characteristics and airflow.\u00a0 Of course, we will report our results as we attempted to turn it into an oven.<\/p>\n<p><span>The aim of Cooler Master is to give their Elite<\/span> <span>430<\/span> value and functionality to their consumers with an entry level mid tower.\u00a0 It has has a classic look and a large side panel clear plastic window shows off its all-<span>black<\/span> interior.\u00a0 Although it has the same external dimensions as most mid tower cases including the Gladiator 600, its main purpose appears to be to support extra-long graphics cards including the dual-GPU HD Radeon 5970 and large CPU tower coolers.\u00a0 <span>Here is the Cooler Master Elite 430 as imaged professionally.<\/span><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ProShot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18742\" title=\"ProShot\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ProShot.jpg?resize=259%2C369\" alt=\"ProShot\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ProShot.jpg?resize=259%2C369 500w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ProShot-210x300.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>From the image (above) from Cooler Master\u2019s site, we see the Elite 430 case is handsome indeed. Yet even a professionally captured picture does it little justice compared to \u201cin person\u201d and our own images will simply attempt to capture the excitement and experiences we have when building a new PC with a quality value case.\u00a0 We notice the blue LED as part of the included 120mm fan behind the plastic mesh that also acts as a dust filter and it adds a nice touch although it would be nice to be able to shut it off.\u00a0 It looks really nice especially at night where the following image is captured in low light conditions as part of our thermal test.\u00a0 Here we see the 8800-GTX fan&#8217;s blue LED color coordinates with the Elite 430 blue case light rather nicely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/NightShot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18743\" title=\"NightShot\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/NightShot.jpg?resize=174%2C240\" alt=\"NightShot\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/NightShot.jpg?resize=174%2C240 218w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/NightShot.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 174px) 100vw, 174px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Why Cooler Master?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We have come to appreciate Cooler Master during the 20 months that ABT has been reviewing hardware. They stand out as a company that is dedicated to creating great cooling solutions and their innovations are impressive. What this editor finds to be especially refreshing is that they are very responsive to comments and even constructive criticism from the end user. As an example, it was suggested that their entry-level cooler Hyper N520 was time consuming to change out in <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=2854\">this review<\/a> because you had to remove the motherboard.  We even contemplated cutting a hole in the motherboard tray to allow access. Well, Cooler Master actually does this with their newer series of cases, including the Gladiator 600 and Elite 430.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Introduction--><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Cooler Master\u2019s Elite 430<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One of the most beautiful things about a case is when it is filled with hardware and it is still cool inside.\u00a0 Here we see one oversized reference HD 5870 and one shorter PCB HD 5870 installed into an ECS A890-GXMA AMD motherboard for CrossFire.\u00a0 However, there are one or two issues that you do not see and we will get to that presently.\u00a0 Also, notice that the clear side case panel has a cutout for a 120 MM fan.\u00a0 Although it is optional (not included), we believe it is absolutely mandatory to have a side case fan if you are running performance graphics and especially with an overclocked CPU.<span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/W2cards.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18744\" title=\"W2cards\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/W2cards.jpg?resize=288%2C269\" alt=\"W2cards\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/W2cards.jpg?resize=288%2C269 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/W2cards-300x279.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>The \u201cLook\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The first thing we note about Cooler Master\u2019s Elite 430 is its classic look.  This is not a kid\u2019s PC, nor is it cheap in any way.\u00a0 It has a couple of USB ports and sound outputs and the grilles do double duty as aesthetics and dust filters, which is especially important as the front fan is an intake fan.\u00a0 You can put in 3 optical drives and room for two additional hardware units the size of floppy disk drives.\u00a0 The Elite 430 complements any d\u00e9cor and the front blue LED looks very good, day or night.\u00a0 We gave this case a very thorough examination to find out the differences between this, an entry level value case, and Cooler Master&#8217;s much more expensive line of cases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/grille.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-18747\" title=\"grille\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/grille.jpg?resize=169%2C458\" alt=\"grille\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/grille.jpg?resize=169%2C458 377w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/grille.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cooler Master did a good job of saving money in the right places &#8211; without compromising style or quality and leaving you options to improve cooling over the included single 120 MM fan. We will tell you their secret very shortly and I believe you will also be impressed with the Elite 430 in providing a good value in an entry level enthusiast mid-tower case. The chassis sports a plastic front and has a very basic front I\/O panel there. The paint job of the chassis is very good &#8211; inside and out &#8211; and there are no imperfections that we could find.  The paint is moderately easy to scratch.  Even greasy handprints wipe off easily and we give high marks to the exterior.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/CM-rear.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18745\" title=\"CM-rear\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/CM-rear.jpg?resize=230%2C317\" alt=\"CM-rear\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/CM-rear.jpg?resize=230%2C317 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/CM-rear-218x300.jpg 218w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/CM-rear-744x1024.jpg 744w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Unfortunately, we wish we could give high marks to the plastic side panel.\u00a0 If you are a perfectionist, beware!\u00a0 It scratches very easily.\u00a0 Ours came with a cloudy panel that needed cleaning out of the box.\u00a0 Simply wiping with tissue paper was sufficient to put tiny scratches into the surface.<br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>The Features:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Features of the case Elite 430 include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Excellent airflow<\/li>\n<li>Black interior<\/li>\n<li>Superior cooling performance including retaining holes for watercooling<\/li>\n<li>Well-managed interior space for extra long video cards<\/li>\n<li>Excellent cable management system<\/li>\n<li>Easy customization for adding additional cooling fans<\/li>\n<li>Tool-free design<\/li>\n<li>User friendly<\/li>\n<li>Two year warranty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--pagetitle: The look and the specs--><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Cases and Cooling<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The PC case has evolved over the years from from its original passively-cooled closed white or beige box.  All of the hardware has become hotter and hotter over the years as evidenced by the growing capacity of power supply units &#8211; especially for gamers.  As PC cooling has developed over the years, so have cases to meet their growing cooling needs.<\/p>\n<p>The hardware outputs all of its heat into the case and there must be a good way to transfer and remove this heat or else the inside case temperature rises.  In turn, a hot case raises the temperature of the hardware inside, leading to their possibly shortened lifespan or instability if overclocked.<\/p>\n<p>Cooling thus becomes critical to an overclocker.  If we lower the case temperature, we lower the hardware temperature and generally we can overclock better with cooler components. The latest PC cases come equipped with fans that  intake and exhaust a large volume of air, thereby lowering the temperature of the hardware inside.  Many modern cases come standard with an intake fan and an exhaust fan. Even more extreme cases will have these fans as well as adding fans to the top, bottom and sides.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the Gladiator 600&#8217;s big top 140 MM fan to exhaust hot air from your case which otherwise tends to pool at the top of a case, the Elite 430 only comes with space for two optional 120 MM fans.\u00a0 Be aware though that in many builds the CPU cooler may be too close to put in the rear top fan.\u00a0 The Elite 430 comes with only one fan included \u2013 one 120 MM intake fan at the front of the case. You can easily add 5 more (optional) 120 MM fans for extreme airflow and cooling \u2013 one fan at the rear, a fan on the case bottom next to the PSU, a 120 MM side panel fan and two top case fans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/top.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-18748\" title=\"top\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/top.jpg?resize=293%2C517\" alt=\"top\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/top.jpg?resize=293%2C517 582w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/top-170x300.jpg 170w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You might notice that the top section has dust filters.\u00a0 Well, if you are using them for exhaust fans, my suggestion is to remove them and move them to the bottom of the case where there are none; they will protect your PSU from sucking dust into into it.\u00a0 The second thing that a PC builder will appreciate \u2013 besides the Elite 430\u2019s reasonable price \u2013 is its attention to detail. The very worst thing is sharp edges inside a case and there were none in this one. The other thing that is important to consider when building a PC is to not grab the cheapest budget case that you can find.  Technically, you don\u2019t even need a case; you can set everything up on a workbench.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to consider that a well-designed case properly holds the components in exact relationship to each other; there is no mismatch or straining anything anywhere to add or remove hardware. And we give high marks to the Elite 430 for being a solidly constructed and sturdy case.<\/p>\n<p>In addition &#8211; if designed properly \u2013 a good case will help to keep cooler air circulating around your expensive components and help to prolong their life by keeping them as cool as possible. Heat is an enemy of your hardware and Cooler Master understands this.\u00a0 All of this became critical to our project where we must overclock our budget CPUs to perhaps attain the performance of those many times their price.<\/p>\n<p>Cooler Master\u2019s name &#8220;Elite&#8221;continues their tradition of quality entry-level value cases.  We have been using our Elite 430 for about a month &#8211; switching hardware in and out several times\u00a0 &#8211; and we like it.  Now that it has been properly introduced, let\u2019s explore the Elite 430 and begin our build.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Cases and cooling--><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>The Packing Box and the Presentation of the Elite 430<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Elite 430 comes well-packed in a tough cardboard box that also advertises its features in retail stores. Although it looked like the delivery company might have used it for target practice for training their drivers, the contents were perfectly preserved. We give our \u2018thumbs up\u2019 for minimal but effective packing \u2013 and much less to recycle and\/or reuse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/CM-Packing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-18749\" presentation--><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Exploring the Elite 430 <\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here we see the Elite 430 with the left side panel off.  The inside of the case is nicely painted. Not painting the case&#8217;s interior is a major cost-saving feature for the manufacturer and it often differentiates a midrange case from a high-end one.  Inside the Elite 430 is sufficient room for two over-sized video cards like HD 5870, HD 5870 and large CPU coolers as big as Hyper 212.<\/p>\n<p>One mid-tower case is generally not more \u201croomy\u201d than another; it depends on how well everything is arranged that makes a build easy \u2013 or not. The motherboard tray is not removable \u2013 a cost saving feature &#8211; but the clever cutout makes it completely unnecessary. We also see a space for an optional 120 MM fan. To the left of the fan cutout is where the standard motherboard I\/O shield plate is installed as shown.<\/p>\n<p>Below that are the standard seven expansion slots. Both left and right side panels are secured with two thumb screws each.\u00a0 They are installed into just one of the panels in the above image.<\/p>\n<p>The front is constructed of plastic and metal mesh.  One can see through the front drive bays all the way to the back of the chassis. Of course, if you use your PSU with the fan facing up, there is no need for a dust filter. If you install your PSU with the fan facing downward as in this case, the best place for a dust filter is under the power supply, to protect it from clogging with dust.\u00a0 If you use a top case fan to exhaust the hot air, you can remove and use that dust filter for the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>We are using OCZ&#8217;s 850 watt PSU to illustrate positioning.  Here the power supply unit is installed with the fan facing downward.  The cool air is drawn in by the power supply\u2019s fan from beneath the PC and exhausted out the PSU\u2019s grille.  In this position, the PSU\u2019s fan does not affect case air flow at all.<\/p>\n<p>The alternative is to install the power supply unit \u201cupside down\u201d with the fan facing upward. The warm air from <em>inside<\/em> the case is now exhausted out the PSU\u2019s grille.  One of the disadvantages with the fan facing up is that now you have to take extra care so as not to drop a screw or other tiny object into the now open PSU. Now let\u2019s put it all together.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Installing the PSU--><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Putting it all together<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The first thing we usually do is to install the motherboard.  Installing the mainboard is done by using the included spacers and screws. It should become apparent at this point, that mid-tower cases are very compact and that you do not have much room to work with. The top area is filled with the five external drive bays, two of which has a sturdy plastic sliding lock to hold your drives securely.<\/p>\n<p>To install our external drives, we had to pry off the entire front of the chassis. In our next image, you can clearly see the front intake fan. Just slide your hard drive into the bay, slip on the adapter and twist 90 degrees to\u00a0 lock it into place. Fortunately, they are not missed as they do not hold well, and to make it even worse, they are quite easy to break. Or so it seems unless we have a lot of hard drives.\u00a0 Where do they go?\u00a0 We see a front fan stopping them from going up against the front of the case and we see two video cards blocking three HD bays.<a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/whereHD.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18777\" title=\"whereHD\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/whereHD.jpg?resize=320%2C226\" alt=\"whereHD\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/whereHD.jpg?resize=320%2C226 400w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/whereHD-300x211.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But we are not going to use HD 5870 CrossFire to test our Elite 430&#8217;s ability to cool the hardware inside.\u00a0 For that test, we are going to use GTX 480 which is the hottest running video card available today.\u00a0\u00a0 Let&#8217;s see where our hard drive has to go with a much shorter single card than the reference HD 5870.<a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/noroom.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18778\" title=\"noroom\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/noroom.jpg?resize=307%2C270\" alt=\"noroom\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/noroom.jpg?resize=307%2C270 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/noroom-300x264.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is not so good with a single regular high end video card and multiple hard drives.\u00a0 The three or perhaps four hard drives that you can actually fit in the HD cage will stay cool with the fan blowing cool air over them, however.\u00a0 And we see that Cooler Master has included the correct number of hard drives locks with their case; three.\u00a0 Let\u2019s test the Elite 300&#8217;s ability to cool the hardware inside and then we will wrap our review up.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Putting it all together--><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>The Final Build and the Cooling Test<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>For our case cooling test, we used AMD&#8217;s Phenom 955 X4 which has a stock core speed of 3.2 GHz and a TDP of 140W.\u00a0 We actually conducted two separate tests.\u00a0 The first was conducted with a single GTX 480 which is an extremely hot running video card at full load.\u00a0  For the second case temperature test, we used our GTX 480 plus a second card &#8211; 8800 GTX in NVIDIA\u2019s PhysX configuration.  Either video card will heat your case and together they are a real test of a case\u2019s ability to move cooling air past your hardware.  What makes ours far more intense of a test than usual, is that our 8800 GTX is an open cooler design which dumps this mini-furnace\u2019s heat right into your case and further roasts the GTX 480 above it.\u00a0 To make matters far more difficult, we used 10 minutes of FurMarks &#8220;Hot-as-Hell&#8221; burning test at 2560&#215;1600 with 4xAA and every detail maxed to get our GPU cooking and we saw 90s Centigrade on the GTX 480 temperatures.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Test Configuration &#8211; Hardware<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> AMD Phenom II 955 X4 (reference 3.2 GHz)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ECS A890-GXMA (latest BIOS, PCIe 2.0 specification; CrossFire 8x+8x; onboard audio).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Kingston HyperX 4 GB DDR3-PC18000 RAM (2&#215;2 GB, dual-channel)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX (768MB, reference clocks)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Nvidia GeForce GTX 480 (1GB, reference clocks)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Thermalright Ultra Extreme CPU cooler\/Scythe 120 MM<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">250 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 hard drive<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Philips DVD rewriter<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">850 watt OCZ power supply unit<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Elite 430 Black (case supplied by Cooler Master)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Radio Shack dual digital thermometer<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/sensor.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18782\" title=\"sensor\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/sensor.jpg?resize=167%2C300\" alt=\"sensor\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/sensor.jpg?resize=167%2C300 167w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/sensor.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 167px) 100vw, 167px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see the temperature sensor is placed below the DVD rewriter in a relatively cool portion of the case.\u00a0 It will read the inside temperature of our closed case while we compare it with the ambient (room) temperature.\u00a0 For the second part of the test, we added the 8800-GTX as a PhysX card.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/2cardsroast.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18783\" title=\"2cardsroast\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/2cardsroast.jpg?resize=300%2C277\" alt=\"2cardsroast\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/2cardsroast.jpg?resize=300%2C277 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/2cardsroast.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>First, we started off with our Elite 430 and the hardware cold and compared the ambient temperatures in front of the case with the sensor&#8217;s reported temperatures from inside the open case.  A little variation is to be expected as shown above in the images, and we kept out room at 78-79 F for the entire duration of our test; rather warm as it is Summer.  On the digital thermometer, \u201coutdoor\u201d is the sensor inside the case and \u201cindoor\u201d is our ambient room temperature just outside the case.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/starttemp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18784\" title=\"starttemp\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/starttemp.jpg?resize=249%2C300\" alt=\"starttemp\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/starttemp.jpg?resize=249%2C300 249w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/starttemp.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 249px) 100vw, 249px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now it is time to run FurMark&#8217;s &#8220;hot-as-hell&#8221; test.\u00a0 Here you will load you GPU like no real world game can and it will register absolutely worst case temperatures.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/FurmarkHaH.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18802\" title=\"FurmarkHaH\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/FurmarkHaH.jpg?resize=300%2C197\" alt=\"FurmarkHaH\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/FurmarkHaH.jpg?resize=300%2C197 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/FurmarkHaH.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then, with our overclocked CPU and two hot video cards pumping heat into our closed Elite 430 case, we registered the maximum temperatures on each sensors \u2013 inside vs. outside.  Please note that this test is run with only the Elite 430&#8217;s single included cooling fan; the 120 MM intake fan in front with the blue LED.  We had an unusually warm pre-Summer night in our desert location and the ambient temperature hovered steadily around 79 F \u2013 80F, plus or minus a couple of tenths. Here is what we saw after about seven minutes of running FurMark continuously:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/106.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18785\" title=\"106\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/106.jpg?resize=300%2C190\" alt=\"106\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/106.jpg?resize=300%2C190 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/106.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is too warm for the single fan and the temperature was still climbing.\u00a0 But to make a point, we will do what many enthusiasts will do with GTX 480 and that is to add a second card for PhysX.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s start over again and let everything cool down.\u00a0 Then we will see how much warmer it gets after 7 minutes with 2 hot cards and only one cooling fan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/111.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18786\" title=\"111\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/111.jpg?resize=300%2C193\" alt=\"111\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/111.jpg?resize=300%2C193 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/111.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>111 Fahrenheit, ouch!\u00a0 The ambient temperatures even went up a degree as our sensor was only about 18 inches from the case.\u00a0 We do not like the idea one bit of roasting the insides of our case and hardware so we added a single 120 MM fan to the side case panel and ran the test once again &#8211; beginning with a cool case and 79 F ambient temperatures again.\u00a0 Here is what we observed:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/104.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18787\" title=\"104\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/104.jpg?resize=300%2C187\" alt=\"104\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/104.jpg?resize=300%2C187 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/104.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>We notice that by adding a single side case fan, the inside case temperatures drop by 7.4 degrees.\u00a0 It would be quite logical to add two more fans to the Elite 430 for a total of four case fans &#8211; two intake and two exhaust &#8211; to get the inside temperatures down much further.<\/p>\n<p>Now you must also realize that as your ambient temperatures climb, your inside case temperatures will also tend to climb a bit faster as in our rather warm room.\u00a0  Our additional case fan recommendation would be to buy Cooler Master case fans as they are not only inexpensive but very quiet and efficient.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: The cooling test--><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Final verdict<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What can we say?  After a month living with the Elite 430 Black, we like<em> <\/em> it for its good looks and we look forward to customizing it completely with at least 4 x 120 MM fans.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s sum up the many positives verses our negatives:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Positive:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Good looks.\u00a0 Very pleasing and conservative<\/li>\n<li>Excellent airflow IF you add more cooling fans<\/li>\n<li>Superior cooling performance<\/li>\n<li>Well-managed interior space<\/li>\n<li>Excellent cable management system with intelligent cutouts for easy CPU removal and installation<\/li>\n<li>Easy customization for adding additional cooling fans<\/li>\n<li>Tool-free design and user friendly<\/li>\n<li>Dust filters are included for the front intake fan and much of the case is designed to keep dust out<\/li>\n<li>Two year warranty!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Negatives:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The blue LED does not have an off-on switch<\/li>\n<li>There is only room for 3 or 4 hard drives in the HD cage with a full size video card(s)<\/li>\n<li>The plastic side panel is easily scratched<\/li>\n<li>The case is inadequate as is to cool high end graphics and an overclocked CPU; it *needs* more fans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is a great value case that allows you the flexibility to cool it as you choose.\u00a0 Just do not expect to use a GTX 480 with the one fan included.\u00a0  If you are part of its intended audience, Cooler Master has saved enthusiast&#8217;s money in exactly the right places to suit most users who want great looks, style and excellent air-cooling potential (and even water cooling) without breaking their bank.\u00a0 Best of all, they have designed the Elite 430 to accommodate the longest video cards like the HD 5870 and HD 5970.<\/p>\n<p>Cooler Master&#8217;s Elite 430 Black deserves our \u201cInnovation\u201d award &#8211;
