Someone <strong><em>had<\/em><\/strong> to invent a new word for all the stored stuff \u2026 Yottabyte.<\/p>\n<p>EMC and IDC recently validated what we all already knew.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve streaked right past Moore\u2019s chip law and entered the brave new world of always on\u2026always in touch\u2026always creating\u2026always accessing\u2026always sharing.<\/p>\n<p>Seems like only yesterday we were worrying about hanging onto Terabytes, Petabytes, Exabytes.<\/p>\n<p>But by 2020, we\u2019ll have an estimated 35 Zettabytes of stuff to contend with; IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Our kids don\u2019t worry about it.<\/p>\n<p>They just downloaded a few cool videos\u2026just stored a few dozen photos they snapped this past weekend\u2026just downloaded a few research reports they need to use for school\u2026grabbed 20 or 30 great songs they wanted.<\/p>\n<p>More specifically, according to Parks Assoc individuals\u2019 file ownership is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> digital photos \u2013 85%<\/li>\n<li> music \u2013 67%<\/li>\n<li> home office docs \u2013 59%<\/li>\n<li> PDF files \u2013 55%<\/li>\n<li> Scanned docs \u2013 43%<\/li>\n<li> Game files \u2013 40%<\/li>\n<li> Movies (not family movies) \u2013 37%<\/li>\n<li> Home movies \u2013 34%<\/li>\n<li> TV shows 29%<\/li>\n<li> Graphic images 27%<\/li>\n<li> Other video files \u2013 11%<\/li>\n<li> Books \u2013 10%<\/li>\n<li> Other \u2013 10%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then, they backed them up onto their portable hard drive.\u00a0 Just to be safe they copied them onto their private (locked) areas of the family network storage device.<\/p>\n<p>Since they were out of storage space, we visited the big box store and bought a couple more really cheap 500GB USB HDs, because they couldn\u2019t take the chance of throwing away the old stuff.<\/p>\n<p>After all, a day after the stuff was deleted\u2026they would need it.<\/p>\n<p>The heck of it is\u2026we understand that!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It\u2019s no wonder analysts estimate that the average family will have 12TB of content and roughly half of that will be backup and user generated content.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18992\" title=\"Figure-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-31.jpg?resize=400%2C348\" alt=\"Figure-3\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-31.jpg?resize=400%2C348 400w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-31-300x261.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Family Stuff \u2013 <\/strong>Photos, videos, family documents, friends\u2019 information, materials and everything else will increasingly be captured and stored by you just because it\u2019s so easy and you can, according to most industry experts.\u00a0 The result will be the average family will have a couple of Terabytes of data sitting at home waiting to be accessed, used, enjoyed. &#8212;<strong>Source \u2013 Coughlin Assoc<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That might not be so bad, but people seem to want to share things.<\/p>\n<p>You know, upload some of the stuff to their Facebook accounts, to YouTube, to some photo sites, to some cloud storage places.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No Scream in Space<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No wonder Yoda can feel the pains of the universe\u2026the vast reaches of space are getting filled up!<\/p>\n<p>Most of the stuff out there though is what we call inactive data.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-41.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18993\" title=\"Figure-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-41.jpg?resize=400%2C295\" alt=\"Figure-4\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-41.jpg?resize=400%2C295 400w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-41-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Retired, Semi-retired \u2013<\/strong> Studies have found that if data \u2013 photo, video, document \u2013 hasn\u2019t been touched for 90 days, it will seldom, if ever, be accessed and could just as easily be archived for posterity, freeing up realtime storage for your use.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8212; Panasonic<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You know, stuff you\u2019ll never look at, never use ever again.<\/p>\n<p>Delete it\u2026erase its very existence?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Never !<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So what ya\u2019 gonna\u2019 do?<\/p>\n<p>What the ****, take it to the office and hide it in the boss\u2019 huge storage farm.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-61.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18994\" title=\"Figure-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-61.jpg?resize=400%2C304\" alt=\"Figure-6\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-61.jpg?resize=400%2C304 400w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-61-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Yours, Mine, Ours \u2013 <\/strong>Companies and government agencies are required to save and protect just about everything.\u00a0 It\u2019s a big enough challenge for IT personnel to save (and find, if necessary) corporate files; but they\u2019re also required to provide the same level of preservation\/availability for personal content on their devices.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8212; IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He and the IT folks will never notice a lousy Terabyte or two of your stuff.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Brilliant!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The problem is \u2013 theirs, not yours \u2013 all that stuff (yours, his, theirs) now has to be managed, tracked, protected, saved, whatever.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the law!<\/p>\n<p>Sure, you can blame it all on big business and big government.\u00a0 After all, a business does more stuff, more bad stuff than you do, right?<\/p>\n<p>You may not believe it, but the government really doesn\u2019t care what you have at home, but business?<\/p>\n<p>Big bad folks, big targets.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, based on the track record of the financial industry, you can\u2019t trust \u2018em so you have to force them to save their stuff\u2026all their stuff.<\/p>\n<p>And governments are great at laying down the law and they want it all saved\u2026just in case.<\/p>\n<p>So businesses practice a lot of information management or data retention.\u00a0 Last year, that cost firms $4 trillion, and the cost is going to continue to rise.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-62.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18995\" title=\"Figure-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-62.jpg?resize=400%2C304\" alt=\"Figure-6\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-62.jpg?resize=400%2C304 400w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-62-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Managing Info \u2013 <\/strong>Analysts estimate that organizations spent more than four trillion dollars last year to manage digital stuff.\u00a0 While the cost per GB is being reduced, the volume is increasing\u2026significantly.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8212; IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Since disk space is cheap and no one \u2013 not even the government \u2013 can figure out their information compliance laws, IT folks decide it is best to error on the side of caution (it\u2019s called CYA, and you can look it up) and save everything.<\/p>\n<p>Buying more drives or stuffing the stuff in someone\u2019s cloud is a helluva\u2019 lot less expensive than going to jail.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, most of the stuff they save is what real techies call unstructured data or dark matter \u2013 it\u2019s the useful information stuffed in the tons of raw data that\u2019s just too difficult to find, grab, save.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dark Stuff Everywhere<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, most of the content sitting on your own or your home HDs is also dark matter.<\/p>\n<p>Most of that stuff is security, network, and system event logs.<\/p>\n<p>You see, everything you do on your system is recorded (somewhere).\u00a0 That makes it easier for the system (and you) to search, analyze data so your company and you can manage how the systems are used.<\/p>\n<p>It makes it easier to be in compliance with government regulations &#8212; PCI, SOX, FISMA, HIPAA (check the acronyms in Wikipedia).<\/p>\n<p>All that stuff is also what folks like Google and Facebook use to sell services\/information to other companies about you as well as support customers.<\/p>\n<p>Bet you thought all those free things they offered you were really free, didn\u2019t you?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u2026silly boy\/girl!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The big boys do something we wish we could do \u2013 without a lot of sweat, time \u2013 they deduplicate their data.<\/p>\n<p>That means they have one copy of something\/anything stored and anything that is referenced to it is linked.<\/p>\n<p>Say you have a 1MB email attachment in your organization that 100 different people \u201ctouched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Left to our own devices, that would be 100MB of storage space.\u00a0 But deduplication would only have one copy and all 100 links would go to the one 1MB file.<\/p>\n<p>How cool is that?<\/p>\n<p>For business, that means it would:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> increase their overall data integrity and reduce overall data protection costs<\/li>\n<li> reduce their carbon footprint because they\u2019d require less power, space, cooling requirements<\/li>\n<li> improve data restoration speeds (when you hit that key and go *****!)<\/li>\n<li> reduce data being sent over the WAN for remote backup, replication, recovery<\/li>\n<li> lower overall hardware, data management, backup\/retrieval costs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If that stuff (data deduplication software) is out there for the individual\/family systems, we haven\u2019t heard much about it.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine if you could buy the software for oh $50, just think how many 1TB drives you <strong><em>wouldn\u2019t<\/em><\/strong> have to buy for the family!<\/p>\n<p>It probably wouldn\u2019t make a ripple in the insatiable demand for storage, but we just haven\u2019t seen many people review that stuff for SMBs, families, individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Think it\u2019s another conspiracy?<\/p>\n<p>Naw\u2026just not as sexy as reviewing another HD, another flash drive, another optical drive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lack of Jedis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That shouldn\u2019t make you toss n turn as much at night as the fact that &#8212; <strong><em>surprise <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 most of your stuff isn\u2019t protected.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-71.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18996\" title=\"Figure-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-71.jpg?resize=400%2C294\" alt=\"Figure-7\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-71.jpg?resize=400%2C294 400w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-71-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Ripe for Picking \u2013 <\/strong>Everyone agrees that protecting content and making your information secure is not just a nice thing, it\u2019s vital.\u00a0\u00a0 Despite the critical nature, about half of the documents, data, images, video sitting on storage devices \u2013 yours, mine, theirs \u2013 can be easily \u201cborrowed\u201d or destroyed because it isn\u2019t protected.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8212; IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s right\u2026on your notebook, netbook, tablet, home server, office system or \u201ctheir\u201d system; a lot of stuff is just waiting to be ripped off.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of your privacy data, compliance information, confidential data, super sensitive stuff is just sitting there waiting for really smart, really sneaky\/rotten people to rip it off and use it.<\/p>\n<p>Just ask all those marvelous free social network and web services how often they\u2019ve \u201clost\u201d someone\u2019s stuff.<\/p>\n<p>But we (all of us\u2014businesses and individuals) are still going to use the cloud storage because it\u2019s sorta\u2019, kinda\u2019 necessary today and tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, IDC estimates that 12ZB of the world\u2019s content will be touched by the cloud by 2020 and 5ZB will reside in the cloud services.<\/p>\n<p>It has to be because: a) media life is decreasing over time and b) the volume of stuff being capture is increasing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18988\" title=\"Figure-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-8.jpg?resize=400%2C300\" alt=\"Figure-8\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-8.jpg?resize=400%2C300 400w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-8-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>More, Less \u2013<\/strong>There seems to be lots more \u2013 more content available, more content you want.\u00a0\u00a0 At the same time, you continually find you have less storage capacity, less time to enjoy the content, even less time to find the content you\u2019re looking for.\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8212; IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s a good solution because after all, you can continue to grab stuff, keep your carbon footprint down, lower your costs.<\/p>\n<p>The thing that bothers us about dumping the stuff in the cloud is that it just seems like we (all of us) are simply shifting the garbage somewhere else, for someone else to manage, for someone else to do \u2013 something \u2013 with.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18989\" title=\"Figure-9\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-9.jpg?resize=384%2C403\" alt=\"Figure-9\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-9.jpg?resize=384%2C403 384w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-9-285x300.jpg 285w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Garbage Scow \u2013 <\/strong>Somehow, when we hear all of the benefits of anyone\/everyone storing anything\/everything in the cloud, we envision a group of New   York City garbage scows heading out to open sea to wander forever with refuse.\u00a0 All we\u2019ve done is dump our stuff on their devices to hang onto.\u00a0 Of course, they are experts at saving your stuff.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>Hey, that\u2019s their problem!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2020\u2019s 1.2ZB seems like a long way off but the way 2010 is going, it\u2019ll be here before we know it.<\/p>\n<p>Then <strong><em>BAM!!<\/em><\/strong> we\u2019ll have to go out and buy a couple of PB HDs for the kids.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18990\" title=\"Figure-10\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-10.jpg?resize=254%2C332\" alt=\"Figure-10\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-10.jpg?resize=254%2C332 254w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Figure-10-229x300.jpg 229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t know, Yoda\u2026we\u2019ll just sit here and hope for an inspirational.<\/p>\n<div><strong>By  G.A. &#8220;Andy&#8221;
