I&#8217;m a little tired, little \u201cwired,\u201d \u00a0and I think I deserve a little appreciation!\u201d<\/em> <strong>\u2013 Memphis, Gone in Sixty Seconds (Touchstone Pictures, 2000)<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you pay a lot of attention to your online security, you\u2019re probably not reading this.<\/p>\n<p>If you pay no attention, you\u2019re probably ****ed!<\/p>\n<p>If you have a normal concern\u2026how bad can it be?<\/p>\n<p>Take a minute and go to your favorite sites and search on the subject of online\/onphone security.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll probably find that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> there\u2019s an increase in the presence of malicious content on trusted sites \u2013 including search engines, blogs, bulletin boards, personal web sites, online magazines and mainstream news sites<\/li>\n<li> there are more than 170,000 new malware apps spotted every month<\/li>\n<li> more than 800,000 phishing emails were reported in one month at mid-year<\/li>\n<li> $4.5 bln lost to phishing in 2007<\/li>\n<li> $740 mln lost in 2 years to e-mail scams<\/li>\n<li> 1.45% of e-mails sent in May 2006 contained viruses<\/li>\n<li> 129 mln Americans received phishing e-mails<\/li>\n<li> 4.57% of Gmail filtered spam is false positive<\/li>\n<li> 22.5 million different samples of malware were recorded in June, double the year before<\/li>\n<li> New webpage infections were discovered by Sophos every 3.6 sec (4x faster than last year)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Whew! <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll also discover that Americans can pride themselves on being a leader.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s right.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. stole the #1 country hosting malware honors from China.<\/p>\n<p>As Raymond Calitri said, <em>\u201cThey threw us out of England, they threw us out of France, so here we are. Random to Gangs \u2013 <\/strong>As more and more people (and their money) went online, attacks went from cyberpunks to cyber gangs.\u00a0 The online thief\u2019s have become very efficient and effective in their work and in their ability to skirt current security protection.\u00a0\u00a0 Their goal?\u00a0 Stay one step ahead of you.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8212; NYTimes<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re out there \u2026 and they\u2019re hungry.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rich Feeding Grounds<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 40-year-old Internet and the burgeoning Web 2.0 have become a rich information gathering ground for \u2026 everyone!<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and that search of yours?<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll be happy to know that:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li> what you do online is not private and can be shared without your permission<\/li>\n<li> companies don\u2019t have to identify themselves and indicate they are collecting data<\/li>\n<li> your collected information can be shared without your okay (you think Google makes its gazillions by giving stuff away?)<\/li>\n<li> no one needs a court order to monitor your online activates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>They sorta\u2019 look at each other and repeat Mirror Man\u2019s question, <em>\u201cHey, Sphinx, I don&#8217;t look suspicious, do I, man?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No wonder people are more concerned abut their online security.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-32.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19540\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-32.jpg?resize=324%2C223\" alt=\"Untitled-3\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-32.jpg?resize=324%2C223 324w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-32-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 324px) 100vw, 324px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 3 &#8212; More Caution, More Concern \u2013 <\/strong>The growing coverage of cybersecurity threats and break-in\/thefts have raised people\u2019s awareness of potential problems.\u00a0 Despite this, people continue to forgo installing and using readily available and economical security products.\u00a0 In addition, the products\/services aren\u2019t properly maintained and even OS and application patches that would prevent breaches are often not installed.\u00a0 <strong>Sourced \u2013 Mintel International Group<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, widely publicized security breaches like Twitter\u2019s co-founders files being hacked, the theft of ATM numbers from 7-Eleven stores, credit card numbers from TJX and Heartland Bank\u2019s loss of over 500,000 credit card numbers have all helped increase the awareness.<\/p>\n<p>Out and out computer theft today is still a significant concern, but it is so yesterday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19541\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=400%2C306\" alt=\"Untitled-4\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=400%2C306 400w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-4-300x229.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 4 &#8212; Value Grab \u2013 <\/strong>While the theft of portable computers and smartphones have decreased, the value of the content on the device to individuals and organizations remains very high.\u00a0 Hardware replacement is minor compared to the value of corporate and personal data and at times, valuable IP.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8212; zTrace<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You can get hurt doing it, or worse.<\/p>\n<p>As The Sphinx told the crew, <em>\u201cIf his unpleasant wounding has in some way enlightened the rest of you as to the grim finish beneath the glossy veneer of criminal life and inspired you to change your ways, then his injuries carry with it an inherent nobility, and a supreme glory.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Numbers Down, Value Up<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Phishing and click fraud are still major concerns even though the rate has declined.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19542\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=324%2C311\" alt=\"Untitled-5\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=324%2C311 324w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-5-300x287.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 324px) 100vw, 324px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 5 &#8212; Downward Trend \u2013 <\/strong>Click fraud appears to have reached a plateau and decreased in total numbers, but the dollar value of the losses has increased.\u00a0 Awareness and caution have reduced the numbers but there are more sophisticated ways for cybercriminals to separate a fool and his\/her money.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 Click Forensics<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the number of reported incidents has dropped off, the size of the take has increased.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, identity fraud is declining.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19543\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-6.jpg?resize=400%2C333\" alt=\"Untitled-6\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-6.jpg?resize=400%2C333 400w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-6-300x249.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 6 &#8212; Better ROI \u2013 <\/strong>Identity fraud has also decreased, while the value of the incidents has increased.\u00a0 Organized crime has also found that the value to them of ATM and credit card numbers has fallen because of better security monitoring by financial institutions.\u00a0 But PIN number acquisition can provide excellent returns.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 Javelin Security &amp; Research<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>People continue to share too much personal information on locations such as Twitter, Facebook, linkedIn, MySpace and similar locations around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>The increasingly sophisticated criminals have access to huge bundles of money to buy the same security and support tools as well as leading-edge talent (who may have been recently laid off) to invest where it\u2019s necessary.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve gotten so sophisticated that your ATM card number is almost worthless \u2013 one report said you can buy them on the black market for a nickel apiece.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve gone down in value because security officials have gotten better.\u00a0 They can sometimes detect stolen ATM numbers before a purchase is made.<\/p>\n<p>Your PIN number?\u00a0 That\u2019s worth $5.<\/p>\n<p>They can clean out your bank accounts and it\u2019s difficult to discover\u2026until it\u2019s too late!<\/p>\n<p>As Memphis exclaimed, <em>\u201cChampagne would fall from the heavens. Doors would open. Velvet ropes would part.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to Ken Silva, chief security officer at Verisign, <em>\u201cThe more money that goes on the Internet, \u00a0the more interest there is in people trying to separate you from that money.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-6b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19546\" title=\"Untitled-6b\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-6b.jpg?resize=324%2C476\" alt=\"Untitled-6b\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-6b.jpg?resize=324%2C476 324w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-6b-204x300.jpg 204w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 324px) 100vw, 324px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/em><strong>Figure 7 &#8212; Follow the Money \u2013 <\/strong>As people become increasingly comfortable with online banking, cybercriminals turn their attention to accessing individual PIN numbers so they can empty entire bank accounts.\u00a0\u00a0 Financial institutions are investing in IT technology to secure their systems from inside and outside intrusion.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8212; Celent<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Cybercriminals are tougher to locate, and even more difficult to dig out.\u00a0 But security firms, law enforcement agencies and financial institutions do their best to protect vital banking information.<\/p>\n<p>But with the banking meltdown, phishing emails have increased \u2013 again.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve all seen those emails about a rumored bank merger or collapse, impersonated bank statements and requests for you to verify your account details.<\/p>\n<p>At some level, they have to work because no one wants to phish a dry hole.<\/p>\n<p>Oh and don\u2019t even get us started on the subject of banking with your smartphone\u2026over the phone line is so secure!!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Apple Boostin\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Through all of this Mac folks are saying with a smirk, <em>\u201cOh those poor PC idiots!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Wrong!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Attackers go with the numbers.\u00a0 They want to carry out their crime on a large scale by infiltrating millions of computers.<\/p>\n<p>As the Mac market share grows, the Mac will be a sweeter target, and the attacks <strong><em>will <\/em><\/strong>succeed!!<\/p>\n<p>Experts have found more security holes in the Foxfire Web browser than in Microsoft\u2019s IE.\u00a0 Apple took the longest to fix Safari vulnerabilities and the longest to patch their OS holes.<\/p>\n<p>Drycroff will gaze at Infinity Circle and say, <em>\u201cThis is one of three brand-new Mercedes, a car they say is \u2018unstealable\u2019.&#8221; <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Memphis will look back at him and say, <em>\u201cI am a baaaad man.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Internet and Web 2.0 is a lot like the plumbing in an old house\u2026leaks happen.\u00a0 New pipes (applications) are added to old pipes (infrastructure).<\/p>\n<p>The new sites, new applications are focusing on building their customer base, rather than protecting current customers.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the steady stream of security enhancements doesn\u2019t ensure that the network, the entire system is secure.<\/p>\n<p>Web security isn\u2019t just a browser or client-side issue anymore.\u00a0 These bottom feeders know how to make the most of an insecure Web app to get at people like you.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Threats Exist<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Threats include worms, viruses, Trojans, sniffers, keystroke loggers, botnets, lone hackers, hacker gangs, organized crime syndicates and hostile nations.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re developing apps that can go in, steal\/manipulate data and even take command and control of the infected system.<\/p>\n<p>Translation?\u00a0\u00a0 These dudes\/dudettes are good !!!!<\/p>\n<p>No system, no part of the iNet\/Web, is completely secure.\u00a0 Password security and you are probably the weakest link.<\/p>\n<p>The best thing you can do is keep your (frequently changed) passwords, account numbers\/codes and other vital\/vital information offline in an ultra-secure storage space.<\/p>\n<p>Then, have reputable, constantly updated security software on all of your systems and always keep it current!<\/p>\n<p>The old saying is still true, \u201c<em>On the Internet nobody knows that you are a dog<\/em> (Figure 8).\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-71.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19544\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-71.jpg?resize=350%2C233\" alt=\"Untitled-7\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-71.jpg?resize=350%2C233 350w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Untitled-71-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Today, no one even knows what country the dog is in!!!!<\/p>\n<div><strong>&#8211;By  G.A. &#8220;Andy&#8221;
