Sure, the GTX470 is a lot faster in a handful of games, but it’s also horrifically slower in a few others. But for the most part it’s about the same speed as the GTX285, and thus cannot be considered a convincing performance upgrade.

I base this opinion on two of my previous articles which used an extensive selection of games. Part 1 tested Windows XP, while part 2 tested Windows 7 (64 bit). Overall the GTX470 performed a bit better on Windows 7, but it was still quite close to the GTX285 in most games.

With the release of the 256 drivers from nVidia, it’s time to run some more tests. These drivers specifically mention performance improvements with transparency anti-aliasing; the scheme is now implemented at the hardware level as opposed to the previous software implementation. Given I use TrAA in every Direct3D game I play, the previous slow TrAA performance could account for the poor performance I was seeing before.

Where possible, archived driver results from the GTX285 running on XP (32 bit) using driver version 197.13 will be used as a baseline. This is especially true since the GTX285’s scores were archived XP 197.13 results. As a result you’d have to assume that the GTX285 receives no performance gain from either Windows 7 or the new driver, but I’m not convinced either is true. Unfortunately I don’t have my GTX285 any more to test this theory.

The bottom-line is if you have a previous high-end single GPU like a GTX285, it’s best to get a 5870 or a GTX480 to be absolutely sure you get a good performance gain across the board in a range of titles.

Please join us in our Forums

Follow us on Twitter

For the latest updates from ABT, please join our RSS News Feed

Join our Distributed Computing teams

Folding@Home – Team AlienBabelTech – 164304

SETI@Home – Team AlienBabelTech – 138705

World Community Grid – Team AlienBabelTech

[2533,7814,7
3249,3422,4029,900,3170,121,106,82
post-20068","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-abt-news","category-articles","category-technology","tag-197-13","tag-197-41","tag-258-96","tag-gtx285","tag-gtx470","tag-nvidia","tag-windows-7","tag-windows-xp
["GET
