but just remember, you\u2019ll end up storing most of that stuff.<\/p>\n<p>IDC says an increase of 5x in IP traffic will multiply content storage by at least 10x.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a ton of storage.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Untitled-61.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20950\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Untitled-61.jpg?resize=345%2C189\" alt=\"Untitled-6\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Untitled-61.jpg?resize=345%2C189 345w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Untitled-61-300x164.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 345px) 100vw, 345px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>More Content, More Storage \u2013 <\/strong>When we read that a thousand minutes of video are uploaded every hour to YouTube and Facebook, we wonder who\u2019s working.\u00a0 But it doesn\u2019t seem to bother people in our household, they just keep creating, keep grabbing, keep duplicating their content because\u2026well because they can!<strong> Source \u2013 Coughlin Assoc.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you really stored all that stuff at home, Richter might be right, <em>\u201cIn an hour, he could have total recall.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ah\u2026the Cloud<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dave Reinsel, one of IDC\u2019s heavyweights, offered his two cents and said the cloud was going to be <strong><em>the<\/em><\/strong> expandable storage solution for families (and business) in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>True:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Its affordable bandwidth, shared\/scalable capacity means you don\u2019t waste drive capacity (green, minimizing your carbon footprint) and you\u2019re only paying for storage you use<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 it is pretty easy, pretty fast to recover lost data sets<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 it is accessible \u2013 you can connect and upload\/download from any Internet connection<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 most of them \u2013 Amazon, Microsoft, IBM, HP, others \u2013 are reputable and use state-of-the-art backup, compression, encryption, data duplication, virtualization<\/p>\n<p>De-duplication doesn\u2019t sound too important at home; but it is, because often everyone in the house has a copy of a photo, video, music or Web download.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a waste!<\/p>\n<p>Experts estimate that data de-duplication could reduce the amount of capacity you use by 40-60 percent.\u00a0 That means saving power, drive space, money.<\/p>\n<p>Compression can be useful because it not only saves expensive drive space, it also means it\u2019s easier to send the file to someone.\u00a0 It can be:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lossy compression, which \u201crounds off\u201d less important information when compressing or encoding.\u00a0 This may be okay for JPG images, large document files and gives you higher compression ratios.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lossless compression allows you to return the files to their original, but the compression ratio is reduced<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, compression just doesn\u2019t work too well on photos, video and that\u2019s what we \u2013 and most folks \u2013 have on the devices\/HDs.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Untitled-71.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20951\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Untitled-71.jpg?resize=443%2C280\" alt=\"Untitled-7\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Untitled-71.jpg?resize=443%2C280 443w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Untitled-71-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Great, But\u2026<\/strong> Content compression is a fantastic way to significantly reduce the content you\u2019re storing on your hard drive.\u00a0 The problem is, it doesn\u2019t work well on photos, videos, music, stuff you need to have complete.\u00a0 De-duplication would help, but no one has figured out how to de-duplicate across all the devices in the house.<strong> Source \u2013 Parks Assoc.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Reinsel is a nice guy and smart; but boy, would we love to play poker with him!<\/p>\n<p>When we said, <em>\u201cWhat about all the bad stuff about clouds?\u201d, <\/em>he sorta\u2019 scuffed his toe in the carpet.<\/p>\n<p>Thought he was going to pull a Quaid on us<em>\u2026\u201cI don&#8217;t remember you. I don&#8217;t remember us. I don&#8217;t even remember me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But he didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cloud Downsides<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Instead, he pointed out some of the issues that do arise:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Some of the new \u201cbargain\u201d services are thinly financed and could disappear along with your data<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 SLAs (service-level agreements) are still a work in progress and vary widely from one provider to another<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Other cloud-based apps like Gmail, Twitter, Facebook have had security issues and there\u2019s no reason to believe the storage clouds won\u2019t be attacked just as vigorously.\u00a0 Big targets attract big thieves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The storage cloud is run by people and they can mishandle, lose your data just as easily as you can<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If a subpoena gets served, <strong><em>BAM!!!<\/em><\/strong> they\u2019re turning over all the drives in that area<\/p>\n<p>He probably could have said more, but he just repeated Lori, <em>\u201cNo wonder you&#8217;re having nightmares. You&#8217;re always watching the news.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>NAS Solution<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The best solution for our house seemed to be a NAS (network-attached storage).<\/p>\n<p>How difficult could it be?<\/p>\n<p>Gotta\u2019 be simpler than the home network we set up last year connecting our computers, printer, stereo, router plus a roadmap to do more.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Untitled-81.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20952\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Untitled-81.jpg?resize=405%2C298\" alt=\"Untitled-8\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Untitled-81.jpg?resize=405%2C298 405w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Untitled-81-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 405px) 100vw, 405px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Ahh, Simplicity \u2013 <\/strong>The industry still falls short when it comes to simplifying the task of setting up a home everything network so you can share, enjoy your content, your work with others.\u00a0 Works fine as long as you stick with one home solution manufacturer, but that\u2019s not going to happen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Only took a couple of IT friends a day +\/- to coax it into operation.<\/p>\n<p>But the shared NAS should be easy.<\/p>\n<p>Connect the USB or FireWire connector to the router, load the software on the home server and <strong><em>viola!!!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Boy, Kuato knew what he was talking about when he said, <em>\u201cA man is defined by his actions, not his memory.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, our IT friend is very patient (with us) as we installed the two-drive 2TB NAS.<\/p>\n<p>Trust us\u2026UPnP (Universal Plug n Play) and slam dunk NAS are still works in progress.<\/p>\n<p>The reason for two 1TB drives is simple\u2026hard drives eventually fail.<\/p>\n<p>By mirroring the first drive, we have our secure backup ready to take over when the inevitable happens.<\/p>\n<p>Setting up the backup software was \u201crelatively\u201d easy.<\/p>\n<p>We noted we\u2019d really like to be able to access the unit remotely when we\u2019re on the road.<\/p>\n<p>Like Hauser, he looked at us and said, <em>\u201cUnfortunately, that\u2019s not gonna happen\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It turns out, an errant click and you open the drive to the public.\u00a0 Hackers love it.<\/p>\n<p>And we weren\u2019t hot about the idea of all of our files possibly saying, <em>\u201cAdios, amigo!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another fantastic idea down the tubes!!!<\/p>\n<p><strong>More Storage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No wonder storage unit sales continue to spiral.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Untitled-91.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20953\" title=\"Untitled-9\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Untitled-91.jpg?resize=400%2C216\" alt=\"Untitled-9\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Untitled-91.jpg?resize=400%2C216 400w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Untitled-91-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Back to the Store \u2013 <\/strong>Home users are like business users.\u00a0 Centralized storage I can use works fine as long as it\u2019s the other guy\u2019s stuff, but mine?\u00a0\u00a0 Too important, so I\u2019ll keep it here.\u00a0 The only choice?\u00a0 Back to the store for more storage.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8212;
