Edwards Deming<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Extensive research\/statistics doesn\u2019t hold much excitement for us.<\/p>\n<p>However, we\u2019re a long-time admirer of Dr. Deming and his writings.\u00a0 While <strong><em>Out of Crisis<\/em><\/strong> was written in 1986, his 14 Points of Management are still being widely practiced today.<\/p>\n<p>We first met Dr. Deming at a conference in D.C. in 1990 where he was a keynote speaker on the changing face of the industry.\u00a0 We met him again in mid-1992 at what was to be one of his final management seminars.<\/p>\n<p>It was difficult to believe that at 92 he was still taking every opportunity to tell managers how they could carry out changes that would affect their personal growth and their organization\u2019s.<\/p>\n<h2>Inside the Man<\/h2>\n<p>At the reception following the 1990 keynote we asked one of his assistants why he continued to maintain such a hectic schedule and how he possibly juggled all of the information requests.<\/p>\n<p>Her answer was <em>\u201cHe is 100% committed to what he does.\u00a0 He never does anything halfway, doesn\u2019t try to slide by.\u00a0 He immediately responds to every inquiry \u2013 postal and email \u2013 even if it to say he is going to have someone else in the organization handle the issue, to say he doesn\u2019t know but will get back with the right answer (and he does) or simply provides \u00a0the answer\/information.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>She explained no one went unanswered more than 24-hours<\/p>\n<p>He generally responds immediately or at least in a couple of hours.<\/p>\n<p>His philosophy was that the best manager is the one who communicates quickly, honestly and as accurately as possible.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe never went to bed in the evening without clearing up his correspondence even if it assigning it to someone to handle.\u00a0 He practices what he preaches,\u201d<\/em> she concluded emphatically.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote clearly and effectively.<\/p>\n<p>He never initiated a project that couldn\u2019t be done properly.<\/p>\n<p>So what does this have to do with you?<\/p>\n<h2>Focus on Support, Cooperation<\/h2>\n<p>We thought about his reputation management philosophy and writings following an evening of email discussions with a writer.<\/p>\n<p>The writer needed information for a deadline piece he was working on.<\/p>\n<p>He needed an in-depth product, application discussion.<\/p>\n<p>He needed facts, research and illustrations so he could file his piece and others had been stringing him along waiting for someone else to give them the information and approval.<\/p>\n<p>His publication wasn\u2019t a large major daily, major site or broadly read shelter publication.<\/p>\n<p>His article probably wouldn\u2019t make or break our client.<\/p>\n<p>But he and his project were important to him.<\/p>\n<p>He needed information and assistance and it was our professional obligation to assist<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Deming was in his 90s and still had a sense of urgency in responding to queries.\u00a0 He thought people deserved immediate and complete information even if was to tell the individual who would provide timely assistance.<\/p>\n<p>To him the head of a $5 million firm deserved the same level of support as did the head of a Fortune 50 firm.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Deming didn\u2019t view the inquiries as an interruption to his work but the reason for his work.<\/p>\n<p>The institute he established built its reputation on quality \u2013 quality of information, quality of work, quality of response.<\/p>\n<p>That reputation was built on one response at a time, one project at a time.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the way a company\u2019s reputation is built, managed and protected.<\/p>\n<h2>Corporate Reputation Ownership<\/h2>\n<p>In today\u2019s \u201copen to the world\u201d business environment, no one individual or department has the ownership of a corporation\u2019s reputation management \u201cprogram\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The speed and thoroughness to handle inquires \u2013 customer, business partner, media &#8212; reflects on the company and you.<\/p>\n<p>Senior management control, guide and shape their organization\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n<p>If they emphasize the customer, sound ethics and lead by example employees understand their responsibilities, their priorities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21192\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-21.jpg?resize=208%2C250\" alt=\"Untitled-2\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is especially true today where news and access are instant.<\/p>\n<p>The Internet flattened the organization and tore down the walls, ripped off the doors.<\/p>\n<p>People have direct access to anyone, everyone.<\/p>\n<p>How employees handle, respond and serve inquiries determine the company\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n<p>Any time an inquiry is stonewalled or the employee\/manager is unresponsive only ensures the individual will seek out &#8212; and find &#8212; alternative sources for the information.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the path taken the results will be the same.<\/p>\n<p>The gatekeepers will be blissfully unaware of what is taking place and will be engrossed in the power they have\u2026until the story or coverage appears.<\/p>\n<p>Then it is too late to \u201ccorrect or manage\u201d the situation.<\/p>\n<p>A reputation \u2013 from Dr. Deming\u2019s perspective \u2013 is something that is built and reestablished every day.<\/p>\n<p>It is built with each phone call, each email, each release, each blog\/microblog, each decision, each action.<\/p>\n<p>It requires constant attention to listening, learning, changing, acting, responding.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21193\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-31.jpg?resize=400%2C532\" alt=\"Untitled-3\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-31.jpg?resize=400%2C532 400w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-31-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Survival is mandatory\u2026personally and professionally!<\/p>\n<p>########<\/p>\n<div><strong>By  G.A. &#8220;Andy&#8221;
