Now if there&#8217;s a bigger nerd in here, please&#8230; point him out.\u201d \u2013 Brian Parks (The Day After Tomorrow, 2004) 20th Century Fox<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Attend CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in January and you\u2019ll have lots of fun.\u00a0 People are excited, exhilarated even.\u00a0 But the things they\u2019re showing aren\u2019t even good paperweights without all the great storage advances.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why we went to the Flash Memory Summit \u2013 a little bit of fun, tons of optimism.<\/p>\n<p>Then, there\u2019s DISKCON \u2013 the hard drive show \u2013 techie\u2026fact-filled\u2026that\u2019s about it.<\/p>\n<p>Terry Rapson summed it up, \u201cOh, you know what these scientific gatherings are. All dancing girls, wine and parties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one stands in long lines late into the night when a new flash or hard drive hits the store, but they\u2019re having a tough time producing enough to keep pace with what we\u2019re doing with our personal\/business things.<\/p>\n<p>The only exciting day was back in 1956 when IBM shipped the 305 RAMAC (Random Access Method of Accounting and Control) storage solution.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-23.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21722\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-23.jpg?resize=175%2C219\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Figure 2 &#8211; Big Storage \u2013 In 1956, IBM introduced the 305 RAMAC hard drive with a whopping 5MB storage capacity, which was somewhat portable.\u00a0 It marked the end of punched cards and paper tape.\u00a0 Even then, magnetic tape was relegated to archiving.\u00a0 The best feature was it leased for only $3,200 per month.\u00a0 Source &#8211; IBM<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yep, a whopping 5MB of storage that only weighed a ton!\u00a0 And it leased for only $3,200 a month!<\/p>\n<p>Today, we carry over 1150GB with us almost everywhere\u2026a 500GB HD in our laptop, a 500GB USB HD, the smartphone has 32GB of user memory and there are two 16GB flash drives.<\/p>\n<p>TCO (total cost of ownership)?\u00a0 About $450.<\/p>\n<p>Flat Worlders<br \/>\nThe Flash folks spend a lot of time in their event talking about how great the world is going to be when things stop spinning.<\/p>\n<p>Folks can\u2019t get enough of the new mobile devices (you really can\u2019t call them phones anymore).\u00a0\u00a0 The numbers are huge\u2026we\u2019re approaching two billion smartphones WW.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re occasionally used for dropped phone calls.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Mobile Growth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-33.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21723\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-33.jpg?resize=300%2C139\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-33.jpg?resize=300%2C139 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-33.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Figure 3 &#8211; All Shapes, Sizes \u2013 Equipment producers rush to introduce closed and open smartphones, tablets and a range of devices to meet the need of consumers to constantly be in touch.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now the third wave of portable devices \u2013 tablets\u2013 is catching on.<\/p>\n<p>Since Jobs\u2019 fanboys (girls) have shown there\u2019s something real in carrying around an iPad, there are a ton of \u201cenhanced\u201d units coming in the next few months.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re great for reading books, newspapers.\u00a0 A lot better for reading web pages than squinting at your phone\u2019s supersized screen.<\/p>\n<p>Watching videos,\u00a0 movies, a little TV is darn good.<\/p>\n<p>People are looking at Jobs as Terry Rapson did and saying, \u201cYou predicted it would happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Flash folks love these devices because the design almost demands semiconductor storage (NAND, NOR \u2013 check Wikipedia).<\/p>\n<p>Flash provides just what manufacturers, consumers need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> low power consumption<\/li>\n<li> cool operation<\/li>\n<li> decent capacity<\/li>\n<li> good speed\/performance<\/li>\n<li> reasonable cost<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Flash folks see their little storage chips everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-52.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21725\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-52.jpg?resize=300%2C180\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-52.jpg?resize=300%2C180 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-52.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Figure 5 &#8211; NAND Growth \u2013 The new mobile devices require storage solutions that consume very little power, are light and provide good enough storage capacity.\u00a0 Source \u2013 Forward Insights<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A gazillion flash cards, half a gazillion USB drives, boatloads of MP3 players\/mobile phones, trainloads of tablets with storage chips inside.<\/p>\n<p>Pack it In<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, not all of the content\u00a0 (the stuff ) you produce with those devices is equal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-62.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21726\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-62.jpg?resize=287%2C266\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Figure 6 &#8211; Not All Equal \u2013 Sure, you grab, produce, share, borrow, rip, copy, repurpose, store.\u00a0 Some is so dumb\/embarrassing, you hope you never see it again.\u00a0 Some is so precious, so memorable you never want to lose it.\u00a0 Then there\u2019s the world of stuff in between.\u00a0 Source &#8211; Intel<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Your music, photos, videos, your important documents can\u2019t be replaced.<\/p>\n<p>So you back it up on optical discs\u2026get 3-4 really big drives or both if you\u2019re paranoid.<\/p>\n<p>Or \u2026 what the heck, hide the stuff in the boss\u2019 huge data farm.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-71.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21727\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-71.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-71.jpg?resize=300%2C225 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-71.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Figure 7 &#8211; Yours, Mine, Ours \u2013 Regardless of whose content\/ information it is, enterprises are increasingly being saddled with the responsibility of saving, backing up, archiving the material for an indefinite period of time.\u00a0 Source &#8212; IDC<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s why Dell, HP fought it out for 3Par.<\/p>\n<p>Business storage is HUGE!!!\u00a0 \u2026 And profitable.<\/p>\n<p>Hey, you\u2019re only using 1 +\/-TB.\u00a0 What\u2019s the harm?<\/p>\n<p>After all, you\u2019re tethered to work 24&#215;7.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re at work even when you\u2019re at\u00a0 home.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, the boss is now saddled with the responsibility of saving and protecting all of your stuff \u2013 and his \u2013 but that\u2019s why he\/she makes the big bucks.<\/p>\n<p>The flash people encourage your boss to fill the storage farm with SSDs (solid-state drives) \u2013 check Figure 5.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Sam Hall, who wasn\u2019t a flash engineer, admitted, \u201cNo, I just, I just said that to avoid admitting the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, flash folks are only talking about a few Petabytes of storage.\u00a0 That\u2019s like trying to solve the national debt with our savings account!<\/p>\n<p>But content is being produced, saved, shoved around, stored\u2026somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>According to IDC, we\u2019re well beyond five million Petabytes of storage\u2026today.<\/p>\n<p>The way professionals, business people, ordinary folks and kids are pushing the envelope, we\u2019ll need more than 40 million Petabytes or 40 Zettabytes.\u00a0 That\u2019s so big Terry Rapson said, \u201cThey had to look it up!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Emerging Gap<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-81.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-21732\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-81.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Figure 8 &#8211; Storage Bloat \u2013 Content is being developed, repurposed, shared by everyone.\u00a0 For the most part, the increasing demand for storage is caused by the rapid growth of video content, which is causing storage bloat.\u00a0 Source &#8212; IDC<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Even surpassing Moore\u2019s Law (check Wikipedia again) in flash capacity improvements, it just ain\u2019t gonna\u2019 happen.<\/p>\n<p>Spinning Better<br \/>\nThe hard drive folks read the same reports as flash people and they don\u2019t plan on being frozen out.<\/p>\n<p>Spinning guys like Toshiba and Seagate are hell-bent to put more stuff on their disks, make them more reliable and stay way ahead on the capacity\/price curve.<\/p>\n<p>PMR (perpendicular magnetic recording) is reaching its upper limits of aerial storage &#8212; 1 Tb\/inch.<\/p>\n<p>Toshiba\u2019s solution is bit-patterned media which will give us the density equivalent to 2.5 TB per square inch.<\/p>\n<p>Seagate takes the tougher route with heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology.<\/p>\n<p>The goal?\u00a0 Storage capacities in the range of 50 Tb\/inch2.<\/p>\n<p>Storage analysts still see aggressive growth for hard drives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Projection of Consumer Electronic Disk Drives<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21728\" title=\"Untitled-9\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-9.jpg?resize=300%2C146\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-9.jpg?resize=300%2C146 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Untitled-9.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Figure 9 &#8211; Spinning Growth \u2013 Hard Drive manufacturers continue to improve speed, capacity, performance of their storage units to keep pace with growing consumer demand and new application opportunities.\u00a0 Source \u2013 Coughlin Assoc.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Are storage folks going to keep up with all the stuff you plan to store?<\/p>\n<p>Jack Hall said it best, \u201cWe&#8217;re certainly capable of surviving this one. I will come for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pipe\u2013 passing the stuff back and forth between the devices\u2013is still an issue.<\/p>\n<p>Right behind storage, we like big pipes or as the NY businessman said, \u201cOh, God, I love buses.
