Overkill Maybe \u2013 Okay, maybe football and hockey gear is a little over the top when you\u2019re preparing to face the shopping horde; but remember, there are people in these crowds that take their shopping very, very seriously.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The daughter borrowed Sharks\u2019 goalie gear so she\u2019s ready for the crowds.<\/p>\n<p>Son?<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s a guy\u2026he\u2019s ready!!!<\/p>\n<p>Ourselves?\u00a0\u00a0 We\u2019re McArthur &#8212; developing the plan of attack and backup plans.\u00a0 We\u2019re cruising the web visiting retail\/manufacturer Facebook pages, scraping all of the Black Friday sites, researching\/searching groupon and all the coupon sites.<\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s get you ready.<\/p>\n<p>The Economy<br \/>\nIf you blinked, you missed it, but the economy bottomed out in the US and around the globe last June.\u00a0 We\u2019re now on the path of a slow (really slow) recovery.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve entered what Ken Rogoff, of Harvard U, calls the New Abnormal.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the CEA Industry Forum, Brian Wesbury, an economic forecaster, said we\u2019ve been down so long people everywhere are suffering from economic hypochondria \u2013 the first sign of economic ills and that\u2019s what you\u2019ve got!<\/p>\n<p>The CEA cautiously estimates consumers will increase their holiday spending 5% this year.\u00a0 We believe that\u2019s low.<\/p>\n<p>We won\u2019t be throwing money to the four winds, but things have been so freakin\u2019 unsettled, the gyrations so violent, CE manufacturers\/retailers are going to focus on flushing out inventories so much and things have been so gloomy, regular folks will have muted enthusiasm this holiday season.<\/p>\n<p>This holiday, you\u2019re going to have a choice of putting the money in a mutual fund or in the bank and they can lose part of it for you.<\/p>\n<p>Or, you can take advantage of the holiday\/Black Friday deals and say, \u201cWhat the heck\u2026I\u2019ve got something to show for the money anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019ll show em!!!!<\/p>\n<p>Their Plan for You<br \/>\nThe CEA. PC\/CE Shopping \u2013 Sure, there may be some people out there who think of frivolous items like clothes for holiday gift-giving.\u00a0\u00a0 But the PC\/CE\/communications industry has been introducing gotta\u2019-have hardware, software and services this year, and they\u2019ve felt the dull pains of a slow economy just as you have.\u00a0 This holiday season, they\u2019ll be pulling out all the stops.<br \/>\nSource &#8211; CEA<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You told \u2018em this year you want:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Peace\/happiness (good luck with that one)<\/li>\n<li> Notebook\/laptop<\/li>\n<li> iPod\/iPod Touch\/MP3 player<\/li>\n<li> iPad (couldn\u2019t just say tablet could you!)<\/li>\n<li> eReader<\/li>\n<li> smartphone<\/li>\n<li> video game system\/accessories<\/li>\n<li> TV<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>About 31 percent of your holiday budget will go for PC\/CE\/communications stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Where are you going to buy this stuff?<\/p>\n<p>According to the CEA just about everywhere imaginable because the industry\u2019s products have become an integral part of your life:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Mass merchants like Target, Walmart \u2013 66%<\/li>\n<li> Electronic stores like Fry\u2019s, Best Buy, Apple store \u2013 60%<\/li>\n<li> Warehouse Clubs like Costco, Sam\u2019s \u2013 40%<\/li>\n<li> Online like Amazon, Tiger Direct, company sites \u2013 46%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>O.K., that\u2019s more than 100 percent, which means you\u2019re picking and choosing who gets a piece of your action.<\/p>\n<p>So what are they going to do to entice you?<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re pulling out all of the stops:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Temporary storefronts in diverse locations<\/li>\n<li> New educational\/informational displays<\/li>\n<li> Financing<\/li>\n<li> Installation\/set-up<\/li>\n<li> Greater assortment of product, features, prices including house brands<\/li>\n<li> Site \u2013to-store offers (forget the crowd)<\/li>\n<li> Free delivery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What are they hoping you\u2019ll buy (in the US):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Tablets \u2013 5 M+ in US, 8.5 M WW<\/li>\n<li> Flat-panel TVs \u2013 10.5 M<\/li>\n<li> 3D TVs \u2013 fingers crossed (more shortly)<\/li>\n<li> Blu-ray \u2013 4.8 M<\/li>\n<li> Video games \u2013 18.25 M<\/li>\n<li> Dig cameras \u2013 14+ M<\/li>\n<li> iPodish\/MP3 \u2013 23+ M<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Get Ready, Get Set<br \/>\nO.K., that\u2019s them, but what about you?<\/p>\n<p>You may be frustrated over the economy, but I gotta\u2019 tell you the manufacturing and retail boys\/girls are hungry.\u00a0\u00a0 Q4 \u2013 the traditional holiday season \u2013 is where they produce most of their sales \u2026 and the lion\u2019s share of their profit.<\/p>\n<p>This is the \u201dmake or break\u201d time for them in 2010, so you rule!!!<\/p>\n<p>Bundles will be huge this year.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone is trying to breath serious life into 3DTV; and right now, that\u2019s not easy.<\/p>\n<p>Not that it\u2019s dead \u2013 far from it, but folks have to see it, have to have a good understanding,\u00a0 see it in optimum conditions, have real assistance in the set-up.\u00a0 So expect outlandish bundles \u2013 Set, BD player, couple of 3D movies, free installation\/set-up\/training.<\/p>\n<p>Expect about 1.5M bundles to be sold this holiday season (fingers crossed), because content just isn\u2019t there (yes, ESPN is going to have some, so will Discovery but after that?\u00a0\u00a0 Soon).<\/p>\n<p>But if the bundle and financing is right\u2026take the plunge because you\u2019ll also get Internet TV and search\/view capabilities and that just might push you past the decision hurdle.<\/p>\n<p>Glasses?<\/p>\n<p>Get over it!<\/p>\n<p>If you want glass-free viewing (stereoscopic), wait 3-5 years.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re more concerned about content choice.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, we\u2019d look for a bundle\u2026couple of good IP-enabled HD sets, Roku box, BD player, fantastic price.<\/p>\n<p>Video game stuff?<\/p>\n<p>Again, it\u2019s the bundle.<\/p>\n<p>Value-add will drive everything this holiday!!<\/p>\n<p>Start Now<br \/>\nWhat\u2019s our family preparing, getting in shape for?<\/p>\n<p>Right !\u00a0 The best deal\u2026anywhere\/everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>And we\u2019re not alone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21763\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=425%2C287\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=425%2C287 425w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-4-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Figure 4 &#8212; Worldwide Sale \u2013 While folks in the US and Canada think of Black Friday as a sale phrase that is unique to the Americas, we were surprised that searches on the phrase have increased so significantly and Black Friday searching spans the globe.\u00a0 Source \u2013 Google, CEA<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The CEA\u2019s Shawn Dubravac blew us away at the Industry Forum when he showed the image above and noted that the search volume is worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Black Friday is becoming as universally understood as free and love.<\/p>\n<p>Black Friday means the cheapest price period!!<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not certain how you get the product\/price if you\u2019re in France, Japan, India or wherever, but the iNet is going to be really strained now that nearly two billion people are online.<\/p>\n<p>Every manufacturer and retailer who has half a marketing\/customer relations brain cell has beefed up their web site, refreshed their Facebook page, limbered up the twit thumbs, prepped their in-store display messages, set up their online\/mobile coupons, YouTubed their sales videos, developed their print\/electronic fliers and double\/triple tested it all.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t started your search already, you\u2019ve probably missed some great deals because some of those folks have already started their Black Friday promos to get a jump on sales.<\/p>\n<p>Boy, that sucks \u2018cause that was just the one you wanted!!!<\/p>\n<p>You have to remember&#8211;on the web, bargain hunting is a 24&#215;7 effort.<\/p>\n<p>Scoring a few great deals does not make a successful holiday shopping campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Sign up for all of the email alerts, newsletters you can locate to score the best deals.\u00a0 You can always cancel later and it lets you fine-tune your shopping location list.\u00a0 There are also several Black Friday smartphone apps\u2026download them and don\u2019t be afraid to use \u2018em!<\/p>\n<p>In the weeks ahead, make up your shopping list and check it a couple of times to make certain you have the products, location and price you want.<\/p>\n<p>Our attack squad \u2013 daughter, son, wife (remember, we\u2019re in the command post) \u2013 have all of their key information on their smartphones, and we can send them updates\u2026BAM!!!<\/p>\n<p>They also use the barcode apps to scan and check other locations just to ensure they\u2019re getting the best price period.\u00a0 In a few instances, they\u2019ve shown the store personnel that they can get the same product for less down the street, across town.\u00a0\u00a0 Most of the time, they\u2019ll match it!<\/p>\n<p>They plan out their individual soirees with precision, using their smartphone GPS app so they don\u2019t waste time, energy, gas, money.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, we\u2019ve had our shopping team in training for some time now \u2026 yoga, karate, aerobics.<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t be too prepared.<\/p>\n<p>She may look like a frail little old lady or a gentle, sophisticated socialite, but remember\u2026this is Black Friday shopping.<\/p>\n<p>Holiday shopping tends to make people a little uptight, a little irrational.\u00a0 With the pent-up frustrations we\u2019ve all had this year, they might be even a little more vicious.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21764\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=333%2C232\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=333%2C232 333w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-5-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Figure 5 &#8212; Gentle But \u2013 Common sense tells you that you simply do not get between a wolf or other wild animal and its young.\u00a0 The same happens at Black Friday sales \u2026 if you get between that sweet little old lady (or anyone, for that matter) and the fantastically priced iNet-ready HDTV set or other entertainment device.\u00a0 Watch their eyes and back away slowly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If they start showing their fangs\u2026back off.\u00a0 Go for the second best price or be patient the store\/manufacturer may have to flush out more inventory and you\u2019ll get a real bargain.<\/p>\n<p>That will give you even more satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>Keep your purse\/billfold firmly in your clutch, no matter how the crowd pushes you.<\/p>\n<p>Jerry Rice held onto the ball no matter how many linemen hit him\u2026he could even dance!<\/p>\n<p>Have your fully charged smartphone at the ready to double-check your list, prices, store locations.<\/p>\n<p>Sanity check with the barcode reader.<\/p>\n<p>Be ready for last-minute tactical calls if the other side (manufacturer, retailer) suddenly changes their strategy on getting you to buy.<\/p>\n<p>The economy, the iNet, the tools of the trade have empowered you to control Black Friday sales this year\u2026and beyond.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21765\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-6.jpg?resize=404%2C299\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-6.jpg?resize=404%2C299 404w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-6-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 404px) 100vw, 404px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Figure 6 &#8212;
