As with everything that we publish at AlienBabelTech, the opinions expressed are solely those of the individual writer and do not necessarily reflect the views and the <strong>opinions of the rest of the ABT staff.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"> <\/span><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"> \u2013Mark Poppin,<\/span> <span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">ABT Senior Editor<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><br \/>\nWe\u2019re so proud of some of the fine people in the online world.<\/p>\n<p>You were one of the first in line at the Apple store to get an iPhone.<\/p>\n<p>First again to get an iPad.<\/p>\n<p>Probably have your order in for a Mac Air.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve put them to great use with your personal and company Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, YouTube pages.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve got your own blog that \u201csomeone\u201d reads.<\/p>\n<p>You Twitter constantly \u2013 in the office, in the bathroom, on a night out, yes even when you get lucky.<\/p>\n<p>No wonder you have so many followers (they used to be known as stalkers but whatever floats your boat).<\/p>\n<p>Looking around for new arenas to mine it\u2019s only natural that marketing, communications people were some of the first to claim their corner of the Cloud.<\/p>\n<p>Truth is IT folks don\u2019t like you very much.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re not doing them any favors by using your own devices for business because they have a tough enough job protecting the company\u2019s IP (intellectual property).<\/p>\n<p>Your device is just a partially unlocked door to the company\u2019s family jewels\u2026and yours.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the brutal basics\u2026your passwords probably suck!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-111.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22083\" title=\"Untitled-11\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-111.jpg?resize=232%2C225\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Clueless<br \/>\nDon\u2019t think so?<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent Web study, here are the 20 most popular passwords (the ones hackers try first):<br \/>\n&#8211; 123456\t\t&#8211; 12345\t\t&#8211; 123456789\t&#8211; password<br \/>\n&#8211; ilove you\t\t&#8211; princess\t\t&#8211; rockyou\t\t&#8211; 1234567<br \/>\n&#8211; 12345678\t&#8211; abc123\t        &#8211; Nicole\t        &#8211; Daniel<br \/>\n&#8211; babygirl\t\t&#8211; monkey\t\t&#8211; Jessica\t\t&#8211; lovely<br \/>\n&#8211; Michael\t\t&#8211; Ashley\t\t&#8211; 654321\t\t&#8211; qwerty<\/p>\n<p>If yours isn\u2019t on the top 20 list don\u2019t look so smug.<\/p>\n<p>Hackers also love the places you hang out..you know Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>There are so many fish in one small barrel.<\/p>\n<p>And your anemic passwords?<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve got systems that can fire thousands of password guesses a minute.<\/p>\n<p>They also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> use brute force based on your public info like family names, birthdays, info you spread around the web<\/li>\n<li> generate guess answers to password-reset questions like 25 random things about you \u2013 mother\u2019s maiden name, place of birth, color of first car, wife\u2019s\/kids\u2019 names<\/li>\n<li> create a word list based on your profile web pages, postings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Human nature says that the more sites you use the simpler you make your passwords so\u2026you can remember them.<\/p>\n<p>Gawd you just make the thief\u2019s job too easy!<\/p>\n<p>Sure the sites do some basic stuff but if you read the fine print your security is your responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t give us the line that all of your devices are from Apple and their stuff just doesn\u2019t get hacked.<\/p>\n<p>The next thing you\u2019ll tell us is that their systems don\u2019t crash!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-121.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22084\" title=\"Untitled-12\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-121.jpg?resize=229%2C229\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-121.jpg?resize=229%2C229 229w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-121-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Persistent SOBs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hackers, cyberthieves go after big targets and Jobs series of CE (consumer electronics) winners just make their mouths water.  The new device users:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> are working (have an income\/bank account)<\/li>\n<li> are generally active in the social media (lots of added links\/targets)<\/li>\n<li> are a \u201clittle cocky\u201d \u2013 come on you\u2019re a fanboy\/girl<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Won\u2019t die on the sword for Steve but still have a great smartphone you\u2019re using for \u2026 everything?<\/p>\n<p>Oh yeah just another worthy target!<\/p>\n<p>Ok so you sorta, kinda know it could be a problem but a recent Ponomon Institute study found that only 28 percent of the users have serious concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Funny think was folks were more concerned about being hit with more ads (60%) than revealing secrets (50%) or having your identity stolen (21%).<\/p>\n<p>Gimme a break folks\u2026protect the company\/personal info first!<\/p>\n<p>We realize that remembering all those mind-bending passwords is a pain but  think of it as mental exercise to put off Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Use a Tool<br \/>\nOr\u2026use a password manager.<\/p>\n<p>No not the one in your web browser\u2026there\u2019s an app for password management!<\/p>\n<p>Actually quite a few\u2026some are free, some cost a few bucks.<\/p>\n<p>These products store all of your logins and passwords, usually encrypted, so you can paste them into the form (some will load automatically for you).<\/p>\n<p>The neat thing is they not only protect you but they free up your mind for important work.
