I simply asked what were Hunt&#8217;s duties at the White House.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bad coverage \u2013 or fear of it \u2013 reinforces why many executives avoid media interviews.<\/p>\n<p>Open the door too wide, they appear to be grandstanding.<\/p>\n<p>Being over reactive\/defensive, can expose too much company private information.\u00a0 The results can damage the company\u2019s, executive\u2019s image\/value.<\/p>\n<p>It isn\u2019t a journalist\u2019s job \u2013 regardless of the medium &#8212; isn\u2019t to be your friend and help you advance your agendas.<\/p>\n<p>Journalists have two responsibilities \u2013 to be professional and to fairly, accurately present the information to their audience.<\/p>\n<p>All of the rest is your job.<\/p>\n<p>Of course there are times it\u2019s best to take Abe Lincoln\u2019s advice, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>&#8216;Tis better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Interview Timing<\/h2>\n<p>There are times when an interview just isn&#8217;t possible for any number of reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Suggest an alternate date and\/or time.<\/p>\n<p>As long as the interview isn\u2019t deadline critical this is why both parties like an email Q&amp;A:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> answers can be researched, thought thru, accurate<\/li>\n<li> responses can be provided from anywhere in the world in a timely manner<\/li>\n<li> little chance of being misinterpreted, misquoted<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Often you can speed the research, interview, writing cycle if you have and provide current background information on the company, key personnel, products and markets as well as appropriate photos\/illustrations.<\/p>\n<h2>Interview Types<\/h2>\n<p>Most reporters are simply hard working individuals who want to educate, inform and enlighten their audience.\u00a0 You really have to work to get in the sights of the grocery store tabloids.<\/p>\n<p>Most journalists want to finish the story so they can do the same thing you want to do at the end of the day &#8212; go home to dinner and enjoy friends and family.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately in today\u2019s environment they not only file a story but they microblog, post to their blog and social sites, upload video stories so their content is visible\u2026everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-23.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22139\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-23.jpg?resize=504%2C318\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-23.jpg?resize=504%2C318 504w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-23-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some journalists like to be controversial and if you\u2019re well prepared and have all your facts available you can handle the situation very well.<\/p>\n<p>A few journalists like to ask the same question a number of different ways to make certain the facts don\u2019t change.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than repeat the answer, say it has already been answered and use the opportunity to bridge into information that reinforces your points, position.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the interviewer\u2019s approach; don\u2019t fudge, spin, stretch the truth, wing it, shoot from the hip.<\/p>\n<p>Horse apples are horse apples no matter who\u2019s pitching them.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult for problems to arise when your answers are clear, concise.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine the type of story you want to appear and respond accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>Even if it is your worst day ever, you can at least visualize that the story is neutral or sympathetic.<\/p>\n<p>Keep your emotions under control and you can manage even the worst situation.<\/p>\n<p>Commit your information and your key points to memory but don\u2019t over rehearse.<\/p>\n<p>Then before the interview begins take a number of deep breaths, relax.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-33.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22140\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-33.jpg?resize=225%2C135\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The Interview<\/h2>\n<p>There are categories of questions that arise in an interview:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Questions you are willing to answer, want to answer<\/li>\n<li> Questions you are unwilling to answer and will not<\/li>\n<li> Questions you don&#8217;t want to answer but will<\/li>\n<li> Questions you simply can&#8217;t answer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Life would be ideal if all of the questions asked were the first kind.<\/p>\n<p>The second group is the one that strikes fear in most managers because they don&#8217;t know exactly how to handle the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps you simply don&#8217;t have the authority or background to comment.\u00a0 The information could be confidential or areas where corporate policy\/direction haven\u2019t been established.<\/p>\n<p>When questions can\u2019t be answered precisely explain why you can\u2019t\u2026at least at this time<\/p>\n<p>If possible, recommend an alternative point that can be discussed without disclosing the specific information and without leaving the question totally unanswered.<\/p>\n<p>The third set of questions is the most difficult because your organization is usually in the spotlight or &#8220;hot seat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-43.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22141\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-43.jpg?resize=458%2C310\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-43.jpg?resize=458%2C310 458w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-43-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These queries are increasing because information and inputs are available across the Internet.<\/p>\n<p>To handle the \u201ctough ones\u201d most companies have executives take media training courses at least once a year.<\/p>\n<p>The intensive one- and two-day sessions help you deliver the best possible message under even the worst possible conditions.<\/p>\n<p>If a manager can handle heated situations, \u00a0he or she can easily handle &#8220;normal&#8221; interviews.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth series of questions can range from those you don&#8217;t have sufficient information to answer to those that deal with strategic\/tactical and company confidential information<\/p>\n<p>There is never a reason for no comment!<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t know the answer, admit it, get the information, get back to them<\/p>\n<p>If you make a mistake, correct the facts and move on.<\/p>\n<p>If there are legal, investor relations or corporate reasons you can\u2019t answer a specific question explain why you can\u2019t and return to the key points you want to present.<\/p>\n<h2>Off the Record<\/h2>\n<p>If the information is confidential, you can consider speaking off-the-record.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the time, this off-the-record commitment will be kept.<\/p>\n<p>But you\u2019re on the limb at your own risk.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t want to see something in print, online or on the 11 o\u2019clock news\u2026don&#8217;t talk about it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Granting Exclusivity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are a publicly held firm there are certain clear-cut guidelines you must follow regarding exclusivity.<\/p>\n<p>However, if an enterprising reporter obtains the information by asking penetrating questions after the press conference, then it isn&#8217;t up to the company official to run out and tell everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>Honor the ingenuity, capabilities, and drive of the reporter who digs below the surface to get more facts.<\/p>\n<p>Another point to remember\u2026once you have granted the interview, you have given up your right to final approval.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Don\u2019t even ask!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Benefiting from the Interview<\/h2>\n<p>There&#8217;s more to an interview than ego-satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>It is an opportunity to raise the visibility and credibility of your organization and your products.<\/p>\n<p>Just have a sound, newsworthy story to tell and be prepared to tell the story.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t waste the editor\u2019s, writer\u2019s, reporter\u2019s time.<\/p>\n<p>Give him\/her your complete attention so he\/she gets everything needed to produce a strong, interesting, informative story.<\/p>\n<p>Know the editor\u2019s, writer\u2019s, reporter\u2019s name and the media outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Sounds obvious but\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Being interviewed can be profitable for your organization and you.<\/p>\n<p>It means someone thinks you have something important to say.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re properly prepared, being interviewed can be profitable for your company and you.<\/p>\n<p>It can even be fun!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-53.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22142\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-53.jpg?resize=450%2C407\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-53.jpg?resize=450%2C407 450w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-53-300x271.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the worst that can happen?<\/p>\n<p># # #<\/p>\n<div><strong>By  G.A. &#8220;Andy&#8221;
