That would mean now.\u201d<\/em> <strong>\u2013 Pamela Landy (Joan Allen), The Bourn Ultimatum (2007), United Pictures<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You should really be excited.<\/p>\n<p>The government \u2013 no matter what country you live in \u2013 recently reported that the last few unsteady years are behind us and things are better and getting better.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s government speak.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, the downturn lasted so long it changed the consumer landscape, so the next few years deserve their own name..the new normal.<\/p>\n<p>Jason explained, <em>\u201cThen do something about it. Everything you need is in there.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re frugal in areas we never thought twice about before.<\/p>\n<p>We go \u201ca little wild\u201d in others because they help us at work\/home, they are useful in managing other aspects of our lives.<\/p>\n<p>Government folks focus on the less than 10 percent unemployment figure, but keep in mind that means 9 out of 10 of us are employed.<\/p>\n<p>True, you may not be as liquid as you were a few years ago, and you\u2019re probably pushing your productivity past your limit, but staying above the yellow line is a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>The drawn out dry spell \u201ctrained\u201d folks that many of the day-to-day necessities \u2013 toothpaste, hairspray, towels, shirts, tacos, etc. \u2013 were all pretty much the same so what the heck buy generic or what\u2019s on sale.<\/p>\n<p>People changed their buying patterns. \u00a0They\u2019re shopping more and not feeling guilty walking out of a store without a bag in your hand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Six Frugal Consumer Segments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-24.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22335\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-24.jpg?resize=472%2C306\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-24.jpg?resize=472%2C306 472w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-24-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 472px) 100vw, 472px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 2 &#8211; Disappearing Act \u2013 <\/strong>The last few years have changed the consumer\u2019s view of his\/her brand and store loyalty when they purchase.\u00a0 They look for deals \u2013 super prices \u2013 and they look more closely about the company\/management behind the product.\u00a0 The challenge is for companies\/products to continually search out new, more effective ways of winning and keeping customers.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 Booz &amp; Company<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We\u2019ve discovered that the new \u201cnecessities\u201d \u2013 smartphone, tablet, apps \u2013 can be used interchangeably at home\/work, so they\u2019re a meaningful investment.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Industry Bright Spot<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s probably why the PC\/CE\/communications industry and retailers are slightly more optimistic.<\/p>\n<p>They listened when Noah said, <em>\u201cI want rendition protocols, and put the asset on stand-by just in case.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For them, there seems to be light at the end of the very long tunnel as consumers move up to the new necessities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-34.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22336\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-34.jpg?resize=515%2C342\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-34.jpg?resize=515%2C342 515w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-34-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 3 &#8211; Shuffled Priorities \u2013 <\/strong>Consumers have cut back their spending almost across the board over the past two years, but there are glimmers of optimism that people are opening up to the new computing, entertainment and mobile devices.\u00a0 The challenge will be in making a profit on each sale.\u00a0 At the same time, the growth in the numbers of shoppers and bargain hunters has made it difficult for commodity brands to retain customers.\u00a0 They must rewin them\u2026every day.\u00a0 <strong>Booz &amp; Price Plus \u2013 <\/strong>While retailers \u2013 and even some consumers \u2013 will tell you that it\u2019s always about price when folks make a purchase, it isn\u2019t necessarily so.\u00a0 There\u2019s a growing laundry list of \u201cimportant\u201d features that men\/women\/kids take into consideration when they make their purchases.\u00a0 The key for successful producers and retailers is to tap into as many of these consumer features as possible.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 MTV Networks<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At least you\u2019re not blowing money in a frivolous manner, ya\u2019 know!<\/p>\n<p>The fact is, you\u2019re paying closer attention to your buying choices and to the companies behind the products.<\/p>\n<p>As a leading-edge influence (yes you), Euro ESCG Worldwide found that prosumers considered all of the factors when making their purchases:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 86 percent shop more carefully, mindfully than they used to<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 70 percent say that it is more important to them to feel good about the companies with which they do business<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 77 percent prefer to buy from companies that share their personal values<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 68 percent of prosumers pay more attention to the environmental and\/or social impact of the products they buy<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 79 percent of prosumers believe they have a responsibility to censure unethical companies by avoiding their products<\/p>\n<p>So?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Generation Online<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>None of this was a surprise to our kids who have a lifetime of apps on their smartphones.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-54.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22338\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-54.jpg?resize=353%2C236\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-54.jpg?resize=353%2C236 353w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-54-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 353px) 100vw, 353px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 5 &#8212; Not a Phone \u2013 <\/strong>Today\u2019s smartphone is only incidentally used to place\/receive calls.\u00a0 All of the other capabilities, features, apps are used much more often to keep abreast of the news while on the go, stay in textural touch with friends\/family\/coworkers and to get the entertainment people want no matter where they are.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jason and our kids reassured us, <em>\u201cIt gets easier.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Daughter has her tablet and the son can\u2019t wait to cruise the aisles and web to get his \u201cbetter solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s got time since the mobile phone show (CTIA) featured a ton of new mobile devices that fit better in a backpack than in his pocket.<\/p>\n<p>Not only are the smart devices with them constantly, they\u2019ve helped make the mobile web the place to be.<\/p>\n<p>They have so many links, tags, mini social groups, geolocation information out there that we sometimes worry that their lives are a little more open than we\u2019d like.\u00a0 We\u2019re concerned about their loss of privacy, the possibility of being hacked on an unsecured network and other safety issues.<\/p>\n<p>But it just doesn\u2019t seem to bother the kids that much.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-63.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22339\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-63.jpg?resize=389%2C290\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-63.jpg?resize=389%2C290 389w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-63-300x223.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 389px) 100vw, 389px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 6 &#8212; Privacy, Security \u2013 <\/strong>Social media and geolocation apps are raising concerns with men, women, kids on how the mobile technology can be misused.\u00a0 The 360 degree life apps make people wonder if perhaps too much is being shared.\u00a0 Young people who have grown up on the Web wonder what all the fuss is about.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8212; Webroot<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Somehow, <em>\u201cWe can tell a phony, fake, hack, creep when they crop up on one of our groups,\u201d<\/em> just isn\u2019t totally reassuring.<\/p>\n<p>We have to admit that the geolocation apps give us a little peace of mind and they\u2019re O.K. with that\u2026as long as we don\u2019t embarrass them.<\/p>\n<p>We can dig that because we remember our dad following us every now and then\u2026of course, we could see him too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Social + Geolocation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Combine the social media tools with geolocation and you also have fantastically effective marketing tools that marketers and retailers are slowly, carefully using to reach these tech influences.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-72.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22340\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-72.jpg?resize=395%2C363\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-72.jpg?resize=395%2C363 395w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-72-300x275.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 7 &#8212; Close, Personal Friends \u2013 <\/strong>Marketers have taken notice of the fact that smartphone users are more active in the social media area and are carefully working to develop and strengthen relationships with prospects and customers.\u00a0 A new breed of one-to-one and M2M communications make it possible to be very precise in your messaging, as long as the relationship isn\u2019t abused.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 MS&amp;L Group<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Think about it.\u00a0 It\u2019s an inexpensive, easy, effective way for business to get their name out and engage customers.<\/p>\n<p>Looking very smug, Noah commented, <em>\u201cWe are the sharp end of the stick now, Pam.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Places like Foursquare, Yelp, Brightkite, Gowalla, Facebook, Google and other hard to pronounce, hard to remember services are focused on helping organizations turn awareness into long-term customer relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, getting them into the store is only part of the battle for manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>They want to \u201chelp\u201d the consumer purchase the product\/service once they are there.<\/p>\n<p>Yes\u2026there are apps for that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That\u2019s It<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The focused, creative marketers are making it easy for the individual to use his\/her smart device in the store to get all the information he\/she wants\u2026<strong><em>BAM!!!!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-82.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22341\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-82.jpg?resize=380%2C253\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-82.jpg?resize=380%2C253 380w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-82-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 8 &#8212; You Are Here \u2013 <\/strong>Smart devices, social media and geolocation apps make it possible for people to quickly, effortlessly cruise through shopping malls to locate the specific store with the best price on just the product you\u2019re looking for.\u00a0 Creative marketers are also able to use the service to reach out to consumers and offer coupons, special promotions, shopping hints and more.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 United\u00a0 Pictures<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Imagine all that marketing\/sales information out there just waiting to be sent to your smart device to \u201chelp\u201d you make an intelligent purchase.<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturers and retailers are also sweetening the pie with their social media\/geolocation tools to turn the shopper into a customer\u2026regular customer.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, all of these marvelous social media tools can also be used against the manufacturer or retailer that intrudes a little too much on the new relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Just like Bourne, they can exact their revenge.<\/p>\n<p>They simply express their displeasure and a whole bunch of relationships turn sour\u2026quickly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-91.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22342\" title=\"Untitled-9\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-91.jpg?resize=395%2C363\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-91.jpg?resize=395%2C363 395w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Untitled-91-300x275.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 9 &#8212;
