Today we look at what has taken place since then. Since the Catalyst 10.9 driver was released, we have seen both the Catalyst 10.10 and the Catalyst 10.11 WHQL drivers.

For this article, I aim to use 12 benchmarks consisting of 11 games and 1 synthetic benchmark to show the performance differences among these 3 driver iterations. The testing will take into account AMD’s largest DX11 lineup, the Radeon HD 5000 series, represented here by the HD 5830.

The Heaven 2.1 (synthetic) benchmark is run at its default settings while all the games are run at 1920×1200 and 1680×1050 resolutions with maxed out in-game settings plus 4xAA and 16xAF.

The tests are going to be run on the same Radeon HD 5830 (at stock settings) that was reviewed earlier. Let’s get to the test bench and the results.

Test Configuration

Hardware

CPU:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550S @ 3.75GHz (441×8.5)

CPU Cooler:

Thermaltake BigWater 760is

Motherboard:

ASUS P5E Deluxe X48 (Rampage Formula BIOS)

Hard Disk:

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB (ST3500418AS)

Memory:

G.SKILL 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2-1000 PQ

Video Cards:

AMD Radeon HD 5830 1GB (reference clocks: 800/1000)

Display:

24” Gateway FHD2401 LCD

Power Supply:

Cooler Master UCP (Ultimate Circuit Protection) 1100W*

Chassis:

CM Storm Sniper – Black Edition – Mesh Version

* – supplied by Cooler Master.

Software

ATI Catalyst 10.9, 10.10 and AMD Catalyst 10.11; highest quality mip-mapping set in the driver, Catalyst AI set to “Standard”

Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate

All games are patched to their latest versions.

vsync is off in the control panel and is never set in-game.

4xAA enabled in all games; all in-game settings for all games at “maximum” or “ultra” with 16xAF always applied

All results show average frame rates except as noted.

Highest quality sound (stereo) used in all games.

Windows 7, all DX10 titles were run under DX10 render paths

Windows 7, all DX11 titles were run under DX11 render paths

The Benchmarks

Call of Juarez

Crysis

Far Cry 2

Dirt 2

Lost Planet 2

Just Cause 2

Resident Evil 5

World in Conflict

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat

BattleForge

Mafia II

Heaven 2.1

Benchmarks and Conclusion

Here are the charts comparing performance across the AMD Radeon drivers released in the last three months, 10.9, 10.10 and 10.11. The benchmarks are self explanatory with average frame rates (or scores) compared directly to each other. Wins are in red and if there is a tie, both results are coloured.

At this point, it is safe to conclude that the AMD Catalyst 10.11 driver is where you want to be for Radeon performance. With improvements in several titles over 10.9 and 10.10, we see this driver being solid.

Please note that as AMD has now officially done away with the ATI name, the Catalyst 10.10 was the last ATI driver. Sad to see it go after so many years but we are now compelled to embrace the future and the new name. The Catalyst 10.11 driver set is the first to carry the AMD name and as such is officially called the AMD Catalyst 10.11 drivers. There is even a new splash screen, as seen below.

Without a widespread representation, it is important for me to say that this performance improvement should continue across the rest of the 5000 series, given that the HD 5830 is a good basis on which to draw such a conclusion.

Bottom Line: Catalyst 10.11 is the best performing AMD driver set at the moment.

Check back later this month as we look to analyze the performance of Catalyst 10.12 versus the 10.11 drivers. Until then, happy gaming!

Leon Hyman
Senior Editor

Please join us in our Forums

Become a Fan on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter

For the latest updates from ABT, please join our RSS News Feed

Join our Distributed Computing teams

Folding@Home – Team AlienBabelTech – 164304

SETI@Home – Team AlienBabelTech – 138705

World Community Grid – Team AlienBabelTech

[2533,7814
4325,4342,3336,4396,72,73,147,3187
post-22410","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-abt-news","category-articles","tag-10-11","tag-10-12","tag-5000-series","tag-6000-series","tag-amd","tag-ati","tag-catalyst","tag-hd-5830
["GET
