Of course, they&#8217;ll want to use it as a weapon. As a scientist &#8211; no, as a human being &#8211; I can&#8217;t allow that to happen!\u201d<\/em> <strong>\u2013 Dr. Seizawa, Godzilla (1954), Toho Films<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After attending so many CES (Consumer Electronics Show) events, you\u2019d think we\u2019d resist being swept away by the buzz.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, after last year\u2019s show, all we saw was 3D.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u201d swore all the pieces were in place.\u00a0 And we believed it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Darn!!!!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Realistically\u2026we knew better.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re still as optimistic and enthusiastic about the long-term success of 3D TV as we were before;\u00a0 but this time, we\u2019re going to be a little cautious.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re taking the advice of that great U.S. President &#8212; George W. Bush &#8212; who stated so profoundly, <em>\u201cfool me once, shame on &#8211; shame on you. Fool me &#8211; you can&#8217;t get fooled again.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ah well\u2026you get the idea.<\/p>\n<p>The motion picture industry is really all over 3D.<\/p>\n<p>Some good, like <strong><em>Avatar<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Megamind.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some a real waste of time, money \u2013 theirs and ours &#8212; like <strong><em>Clash of the Titans 2010, Saw 3D<\/em><\/strong> or <strong><em>Jackass 3D, Piranha<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Hollywood put out 25 3D movies.\u00a0 This year, they expect to double that number.<\/p>\n<p>3D screens worldwide have gone from 6,700 last year to nearly 20,000 this year.<\/p>\n<p>And, according to NATO (National Association of Theater Owners), that number should quadruple by the end of 2011 to eliminate the strain on available 3D screens and scheduling.<\/p>\n<p>Recent releases like <strong><em>Tangled, Dawn Treader, Yogi Bear, Tron. Gulliver&#8217;s Travels<\/em><\/strong> showed 3D works in the closed\/controlled Hollywood environment \u2013 production\/viewing.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-1a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23371 aligncenter\" title=\"Untitled-1a\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-1a.jpg?resize=248%2C310\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lookin\u2019 Good \u2013 <\/strong>Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg thinks glasses for viewing 3D movies are great.\u00a0 He should, his video masterpieces have consistently brought in millions of viewers and hundreds of millions in ticket sales this past year.\u00a0 With more screens available and 3D sets becoming more popular, the future looks rosy \u2013 with or without glasses.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No wonder Katzenberg loves his glasses so much!<\/p>\n<p>But we were kinda\u2019 expecting the stuff to be ready for the home by now.<\/p>\n<p>O.K., we drank too much Kool-Aid.<\/p>\n<p>We forgot the basic fundamentals of the content industry.\u00a0 Penetration requires:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Technology \u2013 device, infrastructure components; processors<\/li>\n<li> Devices \u2013 V, PC, smartphones, cameras<\/li>\n<li> Infrastructure\/networks \u2013 broadcast, Hollywood\/theaters, cable\/wireless, storage<\/li>\n<li> Service providers \u2013 business models\/revenue<\/li>\n<li> Content \u2013 movies, sports, user content, series<\/li>\n<li> Users \u2013 what they want, how they want it, where they want it, what they\u2019re willing to pay<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yeah, we glossed over \u201ca few things\u201d last year.<\/p>\n<p>This year, we put down the cup, stepped away from the bar and thought about what we saw.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t give us that \u201cHey, you shoulda\u2019 known better!\u201d routine.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re right, and there were still a few things needed to be ironed out:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> a bigger investment had to be made in content production\/distribution<\/li>\n<li> Standards for distribution\/viewing had to be finalized<\/li>\n<li> Sufficient quantity of 3D TV sets had to be installed<\/li>\n<li> Viewer pricing had to be worked out<\/li>\n<li> A real 3D consumer video solution would appeal to lots of people<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Back to Screens<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When the brother-in-law decided he needed to upgrade from his four-year-old HD projection screen, he looked at the new flat screen iNet connected TVs.<\/p>\n<p>But he decided it was better to leap forward two improvements and get a premium 3D set (and two pair of glasses).<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>ESPN had the events he wanted in 3D.<\/p>\n<p>Discovery is cranking out several show series.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone is trying to figure out how\/when they can do it and make money.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23372\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-22.jpg?resize=368%2C368\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-22.jpg?resize=368%2C368 368w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-22-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-22-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Good, Not Great \u2013 <\/strong>As with most \u201cnew\u201d technologies, fortune tellers saw 3D TV set sales taking off like the proverbial hockey stick.\u00a0 They overlooked the fact that we just invested in a new High Def screen and there was only a minimum volume of decent 3D content available to watch at home.\u00a0 But over the next two years, the picture will change.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 ABI Research<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We \u201cmight\u201d have been one of the 3.4 +\/- M folks who paid the premium, but didn\u2019t see that many 3D TV shows that interested us (O.K., ZERO).<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re just not into watching disc movies over and over.<\/p>\n<p>Golf and football won\u2019t win us over.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re going to wait for our 3D set until 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Obvious.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a <strong><em>new <\/em><\/strong>3D Godzilla movie in the works and it will be available in\u20262014!<\/p>\n<p>The early, badly dubbed, B&amp;W Godzilla movies were masterpieces.<\/p>\n<p>The new one?<\/p>\n<p>We can hardly wait!!!!<\/p>\n<p>Not enough to convince you to go full 3D?<\/p>\n<p>The new Avatar movie will be released then too and will be even more spectacular than Cameron\u2019s original.<\/p>\n<p>All of the 3D heavyweights were at CES to discuss the investments, improvements being made in every sector \u2013 production, post-production, programming, distribution and viewing.<\/p>\n<p>Content momentum is building:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> CGI (Computer-Generated Images)\n<ul>\n<li> 10% of games last year, 20% this year, 50% in 2012<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li> Live action\n<ul>\n<li> Prerecorded<\/li>\n<li> Real time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li> 2D \u2013 3D conversion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A lot of the research being is being done to understand how the mind handles, processes images in our 3D world.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s similar to the work done in perfecting psychoacoustic sound.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing there\u2019s a single audio source and yet \u201cfeeling\u201d the sound go in one ear, pass around your head to the other ear is mind-blowing.<\/p>\n<p>The same is being perfected on how the mind processes, handles, responds to stereo images.<\/p>\n<p>The great thing is, every standards organization is developing <em>their<\/em> set of standards:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> SMPTE (Society for Motion Picture and Television Engineers)<\/li>\n<li> DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting)<\/li>\n<li> CEA (Consumer Electronics Association)<\/li>\n<li> ITU (International Telecommunications Union)<\/li>\n<li> And more\u2026lots more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A big buying chasm, of course, is the glasses.\u00a0 Not that you have to wear glasses, but that folks offer you a choice:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> active shutter or polarized system<\/li>\n<li> manufacturer or universal shutter<\/li>\n<li> streaming or Blu-ray resolution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each technology has its champions and its detractors.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, people don\u2019t go to movies, buy TV sets or rent new smart devices based on technology.<\/p>\n<p>They make the decision based on the experience.<\/p>\n<p>No consumer wants to choose the wrong \u201cright\u201d solution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3D Photos, Home Video<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fuji\u2019s stereo camera is a good first-generation solution, \u00a0but it\u2019s not just the camera.<\/p>\n<p>Being the first, Fuji had to supply the total ecosystem \u2013 camera, processing, viewing frame.<\/p>\n<p>It needs to be instant, universal like all of today\u2019s digital photos.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Personal 3D Video \u2013 <\/strong>A number of decent image quality, economic 3D cameras and camcorders have been introduced that require no glasses for viewing\u2026as long as you view the images\/content on the unit\u2019s viewer.\u00a0 If you can get the content to your PC, 3D TV set, active or passive glasses will be required.\u00a0 There are technology reasons for this, so for the foreseeable future\u2026live with it!<\/p>\n<p>There were some reasonably priced 3D camcorders introduced.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t even need glasses, \u00a0as long as you used your camcorder\u2019s viewer or display.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it would be neat to play your 3D family movie on your 3DTV set.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re working on that\u2026soon!<\/p>\n<p><strong>The 3D PC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our kid wanted the 3D TV to play his games on; but heck, he\u2019s already had real 3D platforms to burn.<\/p>\n<p>He has his notebook\u2026desktop\u2026active shutter, passive polarized glasses\u2026special gloves\u2026more stuff than we ever dreamt of when we were his age.<\/p>\n<p>And he\u2019s not alone. \u00a03D computers are moving very well because other options are \u201ca little behind the curve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-44.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23373\" http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-44-300x276.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Game On \u2013 <\/strong>Most of the new single and multiplayer games are brilliantly executed in 3D with breathtaking action, photo-real play and everything the adrenalin junkie could ask for.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 Jon Peddie Research<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just as gamers lead the party in getting high def screens, more than 75 percent of the gaming systems fully support 3D.<\/p>\n<p>Glasses don\u2019t bother gamers when they play stuff like WOW (World of Warcraft) for hours on end.<\/p>\n<p>Gamers are actually better off than the rest of us, because they already have more than 425 games to immerse themselves in and most are multiplayer.<\/p>\n<p>This year, we\u2019ll see more games, more 3D screens in homes, more TV events\/shows, more good\/bad movies in theaters.<\/p>\n<p>It will take a couple of years for all the parties to figure out how each is going to make a buck\u2026or deliver a complete array of 3D content to the home user.\u00a0 The challenge is not technology but determining who gets paid how much for the materials you enjoy.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013
