Some of the activities are effective white noise.\u00a0 Others are lost the minute they turn away, in a few hours, a few days.\u00a0 But with data\/content coming at us from everywhere, it is as natural as eating at your computer.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 GfK Roper<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>Congratulations!!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But go into a meeting with another multitasking master.<\/p>\n<p>You know he\/she blocked out 30 minutes for you.<\/p>\n<p>You wade through the detailed report they asked for while they:<\/p>\n<p>Shuffle papers<\/p>\n<p>Flip through emails<\/p>\n<p>Check phone text messages<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We Send Messages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re done, they thank you\/congratulate you on a great report.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, they just repeated what Nash said, <em>\u201cYour comfort comes second to my ability to hear my own voice.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-32.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25738\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-32.jpg?resize=301%2C218\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-32.jpg?resize=301%2C218 301w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-32-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Always-On \u2013 <\/strong>People who pride themselves on being masters of multitasking often look like one of Picasso\u2019s later paintings.\u00a0 They are working on multiple projects, multiple activities doing a little here, a little there and rushing to complete them all at the same time.\u00a0 They have learned to deal with errors by correcting, fine-tuning on the fly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Your multitasking business associate may have gotten a lot done while you made your presentation, but giving you his\/her attention while you detailed the results of your research\/work wasn\u2019t one of them.<\/p>\n<p>When you leave, do you believe \u2013 really believe \u2013 the person on the other side of the desk really got what you were saying?<\/p>\n<p>Yeah\u2026right!!!<\/p>\n<p>People will still insist they are good at multitasking and are capable of handling\/digesting the way data streams at them handle the information\/the workload differently.<\/p>\n<p>They can all handle it <strong><em>BUT\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a boomer or late Gen Xer, you work around multiple tasking .<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a millennial or early Gen Xer, what\u2019s the problem here?<\/p>\n<p>None!<\/p>\n<p>The truth is the latter groups aren\u2019t little versions of us.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Generational Differences<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-42.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25739\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-42.jpg?resize=563%2C106\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-42.jpg?resize=563%2C106 563w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-42-300x56.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Generational Differences \u2013 <\/strong>Each generation is different from its predecessor because they are exposed to activities, technology and things differently.\u00a0 Younger adults accept technology as an integral part of their life that has been available \u201cforever.\u201d\u00a0 Older adults see the benefits of the technology but have to work at integrating it into their daily life.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 Pew Internet &amp; American Life Project<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sharing, staying connected, instantaneity, assembling random information into patterns,\u00a0 using their technology in new, different ways is natural<\/p>\n<p>To them, their tech tools are just normal devices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Experienced Travelers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to a recent Pew Internet report, the millennial in the cubicle next to you or down the hall has, on average, played more than 5,000 hours of videogames; exchanged more than 250,00 emails, IMs, phone text messages; 10,000 hours of cell phone use, 3,500 hours online.<\/p>\n<p>To millennials and early Gen Xers, certain things are natural:<\/p>\n<p>They were born 10 years after the 1<sup>st<\/sup> consumer computer (Altair)<\/p>\n<p>The 3<sup>rd<\/sup> generation Super Mario Brothers hit the market<\/p>\n<p>When they entered kindergarten, Tim Berners-Lee developed the World Wide Web<\/p>\n<p>In middle school they used a Palm Pilot<\/p>\n<p>In high school Sean Fanning introduced Napster file-sharing<\/p>\n<p>On high school graduation they received an iPod and cameraphone<\/p>\n<p>In college they were creating, reading blogs, RSS feeds, Wikipedia<\/p>\n<p>They ventured onto social media sites like Friendster<\/p>\n<p>They enjoyed free online phone service with Skype<\/p>\n<p>As they started entering the workforce, they had broadband to their home\/apartment<\/p>\n<p>They were shooting video, editing it, post producing with software like muvee Reveal (www.muvee.com), \u00a0showing it at home or on YouTube<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re a lot like Nash when he said, <em>\u201cYou wanted to see if I was crazy and would screw everything up if I actually won.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Percentage of Teens Using the Internet Who:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-52.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25740\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-52.jpg?resize=320%2C254\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-52.jpg?resize=320%2C254 320w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-52-300x238.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Comfortable, Natural \u2013 <\/strong>You\u2019ve seen toddlers, teens, tweens pick up almost any computer\/processor-based device and begin using it almost instantly.\u00a0 They\u2019re just natural tools to them, not intricate, specialized technology.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 Pew Internet &amp; American Life Project<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Their brains are just wired different than the earlier generations. Morisell has shown that an individual who is frequently interrupted takes up to 50 percent longer to complete a given task and makes up to 50 percent more errors.\u00a0 The tests involved single-focus and multiple-focus tasks.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 Rogers &amp; Morisell, Journal of Experimental Psychology<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The digital native will continue to toggle back and forth between business activities, chats with friends,\u00a0 online research and onscreen work projects.<\/p>\n<p>You can pride yourself on being able to juggle multiple tasks but in reality, this technophile overdose really produces a condition that a technology consultant called \u201ccontinuous partial attention\u201d \u2013 scanning the sources to find the optimum inputs.<\/p>\n<p>The problem\/challenge for both digital natives and digital immigrants is that our new business\/personal tools \u2013 smartphones, tablets, notebooks \u2013 mashes work\/leisure, producer\/consumer, education\/entertainment into one stream of blended\/blurred activity.<\/p>\n<p>Multtasking may be highly praised, but it\u2019s still a myth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Natural Processes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The brain can operate \u201cnatural\u201d functions like breathing, feeling, seeing, hearing, tasting but also process multiple concepts is impossible.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s done sequentially\u2026one at a time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-81.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25746\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-81.jpg?resize=192%2C184\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll drink to that!<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t believe it?<\/p>\n<p>Next time you\u2019re having a serious or intimate moment with your significant other, answer a text message or couple of emails.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25747\" title=\"Untitled-9\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Untitled-9.jpg?resize=254%2C206\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Or look into their eyes and repeat what Nash said, <em>\u201cIt is only in the mysterious equations of love that any logic or reason can be found.
