These new CPUs are now based on a new socket and hence a completely new motherboard platform. The EFI BIOS interface is quite different from the tradition BIOS screen we are used to. It is a welcome change from the keyboard-only, two-colour BIOS we are used to. They both serve very important functions, one for absolute performance and one for energy efficiency respectively.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">TurboV Processing Unit (TPU)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The TurboV EVO software is used to control how the TPU functions and gives the end user the ability to tweak the system\u2019s performance setting from within the operating system. This is most likely to appeal to persons that are <em>afraid<\/em> to mess around in the BIOS.<\/p>\n<p>Any settings that are changed and tested in the operating system are then saved to the CMOS on reboot. This is a very nice feature and it is the best overclocking software I have ever used.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Energy Processing Unit (EPU)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the flipside of ultimate performance, there is another processor that ASUS uses very well to maximize energy savings. The EPU optimizes energy efficiency by allowing the end user to manually adjust voltages and CPU speed based on system load. It can also be set to dynamically change fan speed on the fly, for example lowering the fan\u2019s rpm when the system is idle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">DIGI+ VRM<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>DIGI+ VRM is an intelligent management system that manages both the TPU and the EPU. This is done via the RC TweakIt software that is found bundled with the high end ROG motherboards. Compatible devices are those smartphones that run Android, Windows Mobile or Symbian OSes.<\/p>\n<p>The mainstream Bluetooth functions of BT GO! are very practical and easy to use. From the ASUS AI Suite software package the BT GO! software allows a variety of functions such as Shot &amp; Send, BT Transfer, Folder Sync, Music Player, BT Turbo Remote (similar to RC TweakIt), Personal Manager and BT to Net.<\/p>\n<p>You are sure to find at least one of these features helpful in your everyday computing. The only exceptions are for the platform changes, motherboard, processor and memory.<\/p>\n<p>All game benchmarks were run at both 1024\u00d7768 and 1440&#215;900 resolutions. The lower the resolution, the more CPU and less GPU strain is generated. Nothing new has really been implemented in the PCI Express arena and therefore the testing is more focused on the CPU and memory subsystem output.<\/p>\n<p>The Unigine Heaven 2.1 Benchmark was also run at these resolutions with Tessellation set to Normal. Both 3DMark tests were run at their default settings. Memory and cache benchmarks are available to analyze system RAM bandwidth and latency. Processor benchmarks utilize MMX, 3DNow! and SSE instructions, and scale up to 32 processor cores. For legacy processors all benchmarks are available in 32-bit version as well. The P8P67 managed to maintain a faster average transfer rate than the X48 board. It registered 108.7 MB\/s which is 0.3 MB\/s faster than the competition and very respectable for a SATA 3.0 Gb\/s hard disk. This is well within the margin of error but this editor believes that if it is tested several times with the same result, then it is conclusive.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: No SATA 6.0 Gb\/s drives were available for testing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In addition, there was also a slight reduction in CPU usage on the P8P67 with only 1.1% usage versus the 2.4% on the Core 2 Quad.<\/p>\n<p>The File Benchmark demonstrated a slight advantage for the X48 over the P67 but proved to be negligible.<\/p>\n<p>In the Extra Tests, the only result that really jumped out at me was the Burst rate. The P8P67 had an extraordinary result and after retesting a few times it was conclusive. Never before have I seen such a high reading. It registered 386,370 Input\/Output Operations per Second (IOPS) and over 24,000 MB\/s transfer burst rate! Amazing!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:Benchmark: CrystalDiskMark--><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1 x64<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>CrystalDiskMark is a small HDD benchmark utility for your hard drive that enable you to rapidly measure sequential and random read\/write speeds.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You can perform sequential tests in reading and writing, but also random testing in reading and writing in packets of 512 KB and 4 KB. Scaling across this test was definitive and results were easily achieved. The i7 at stock beats the maximum overclock of the C2Q. As it is a DX10-only benchmark, it only runs on Windows Vista and Windows 7. 3DMark Vantage is composed of four full-bore benchmarking tests (2 CPU tests and 2 GPU tests) and 6 feature tests. However, testing at low resolutions eases the pressure on the GPU while increasing it on the CPU; hence, a better test for this scenario.<\/p>\n<p>In the 3DMark Vantage benchmark, we see that the stock Q9550S\/X48 setup really lags behind the competition. However, when clocked higher, we see a more balanced comparison. As the Agency\u2019s best, Rico can execute a range of breathtaking new stunts, utilizing his trademark parachute and upgraded grapple to reach any location in Panau, a 400 square mile island of white sand beaches, scorching deserts and snow-capped peaks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"P8P67 - Just Cause 2\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/P8P67-Just-Cause-2.png?resize=540%2C461\" border=\"0\" alt=\"P8P67 - Just Cause 2\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The C2Q\/X48 rig went back to winning ways with <em>Just Cause 2<\/em> and completely trounced the newcomer. I have yet to discover why there is such a large gap between them but after testing and retesting, the numbers don\u2019t seem to lie.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:Benchmark: Resident Evil 5--><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Resident Evil 5<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another series that is an old favourite, <em>Resident Evil 5<\/em> brings with it a top-notch gaming experience and rich, fluid visuals.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"P8P67 - Resident Evil 5\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/P8P67-Resident-Evil-5.png?resize=540%2C461\" border=\"0\" alt=\"P8P67 - Resident Evil 5\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The opposite is now true in <em>Resident Evil 5<\/em> as the newcomer stamps its class all over this one. Resounding results that will sit well with all the zombie killers out there.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:Benchmark: Call of Pripyat--><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The events of <strong>S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat<\/strong> unfold shortly after the end of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. Having discovered about the open path to the Zone center, the government decides to hold a large-scale military \u201cFairway\u201d operation aimed to take the CNPP under control.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <em>S.T.A.L.K.E.R.<\/em> (just simply called <em>STALKER<\/em>) series has made quite an impact on PC gaming with its Action-RPG, FPS hybrid style gameplay. The latest game in the series, <em>Call of Pripyat<\/em>, has a benchmark which was used to compare system performance.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"P8P67 - Stalker CoP\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/P8P67-Stalker-CoP.png?resize=540%2C461\" border=\"0\" alt=\"P8P67 - Stalker CoP\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The see-saw continues to rock as the tables turn once again. The Q9550S prevails in <em>Call of Pripyat<\/em> and does it with authority. Again, after several rounds of testing, the numbers seem to stand.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:Benchmark: Heaven 2.1--><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Heaven 2.1<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Unigine Heaven benchmark uses DirectX 11 and heavy tessellation that will strain any video card. It is a top-notch technology, that can be easily adapted to various projects due to its elaborated software design and flexible toolset. A few games are currently in development using this engine. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"P8P67 - Heaven 2_1\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/P8P67-Heaven-2_1.png?resize=540%2C461\" border=\"0\" alt=\"P8P67 - Heaven 2_1\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another synthetic benchmark and another win for the older setup. Its clear that the resulting performance of these setups are heavily dependent on the test itself. Now before I conclude, let us have a look at overclocking on the P8P67 motherboard.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:ASUS P8P67 Overclocking--><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Overclocking<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Overclocking was a very fruitful experience on this platform. I was easily able to get to 4.43GHz without breaking too much of a sweat. This was achieved with TurboV EVO Auto Tuning software. Note that the Intel stock heatsink was used during the test. This is to give a good impression of what the mainstream end user is likely to achieve. Tweaking the system via software in the OS usually leaves an enthusiast wanting more but the TurboV EVO is the best I\u2019ve seen and it does not disappoint.<\/p>\n<p>You can make adjustments to the system on the fly and test them right away. This saves a lot of time. Once you\u2019re happy with your results, reboot your system and you\u2019re good to go. If you try to push too far though, your system may become unresponsive and a hard reset may be required.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:Benchmark: Conclusion--><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is very refreshing to see a mainstream chipset on a motherboard that performs as well as the enthusiast level of not long ago. Several superb technological advances are being made and the ASUS P8P67 shows them off beautifully. The P8P67 motherboard comes to the market at an affordable US $160 and the performance you get from it more than justifies the purchase.<\/p>\n<p>If you are in the market for an LGA 1155 CPU, \u00a0you should be considering this motherboard to go along with it. The ASUS P8P67 is an entry level board that packs top level features and functionality. It is an absolute masterpiece given its price and is sure to please any end user.
