It was finally released last week by Gearbox Software and 2K Games for the Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, and Play Station 3 on June 14, 2011 in North America and a few days earlier world-wide. Duke Nukem is a fictional character and action hero who has been the protagonist in over a dozen video games, comic books, and an upcoming live-action feature film. The premise of Duke Nukem Forever is a continuation of the adventures of Duke Nukem who single-handed stopped a mid-1990s alien invasion of Earth.

Duke Nukem first appeared in the 1991 (PC-DOS) video game Duke Nukem developed by Apogee Software. The Duke has since starred in multiple sequels developed by 3D Realms, and currently by Gearbox Software who now have the rights to Duke Nukem and who own its intellectual property. Duke Nukem Forever has big shoes to fill as a cult following has grown up around Duke Nukem 3D. Fourteen years ago, reviewers mostly praised the game. It was also a commercial success selling about three and a half million copies and it is not without controversy due to the game’s erotic elements and its portrayal of women.

After fourteen years in development limbo with many announcements of its imminent release followed by delay after delay, the sequel was finally released and we are going to give you our impressions of Duke Nukem Forever as well as a performance evaluation featuring 3D Vision/Surround (1920-5760×1080 resolution) featuring the GTX 580 and the 560 TI as well as GTX 560 Ti SLI to run 3D Vision Surround.

Ever since Duke Nukem 3D, the tough guy character has been constantly and expertly voiced by voice actor Jon St. John. It is fortunate that the Duke remains pretty much the same egocentric macho over-the-top action character throughout the entire video game series, as the Duke does much the same violent things, retains the same attitude toward women and he delivers similar corny and heavy one-liners all throughout.

Of course Duke Nukem Forever has updated the visuals from the 1996 game to DX9c (not DX10 nor DX11 as it runs on the Unreal 3 engine) but it is still not quite on a par with the most graphically intensive DX9 PC games of 2011. Therefore it runs very well on a GTX 560 Ti and will also give excellent performance results for 1080p resolution 3D Vision. Besides updating the visuals, Gearbox created a single player sequel, as well as adding online multiplayer.

This review is only going to focus on the single player content and especially on playing with Nvidia’s 3D Vision (1920×1080) and in 3D Vision Surround (5760×1080). Playing a game in Stereo 3D (S3D) will definitely increase immersion of a good game but nothing can save a real pig of a game if it is a disaster in 2D. Before we look at the merits and flaws of Duke Nukem Forever, we need to look at Nvidia’s 3D Vision and the hardware we used to play it on.

3D Vision and 3D Vision Surround

We received a 3D Vision kit from Nvidia about 3 months ago that we have been continuously evaluating with well over seventy (70!) Putting on the glasses and switching on 3D Vision immediately darkens the scene compared to in 2D, and you will definitely need a bright display to compensate. The ASUS displays are excellent in this regard.

The 3D effect appears real as images seem to extened back into the space behind your 2D display, as if it were a window instead of a flat plane. You can even have objects appear to extend out from the monitor’s screen surface as most of the 3D ads show. Unfortunately, this is the best way to “show” someone stereo 3D (S3D) on a 2D plane although if it actually happens often in a game or a movie, it becomes quite disorienting.

The best S3D appears to take place inside a 3-dimensional space “inside” of your display – like inside of a clear-glass aquarium instead of on a flat screen and the illusion of depth is very convincing. Nvidia’s software works by examing the “Z” co-ordinates already programmed into every PC game which means it works with virtually any video game. Some games work much better than others with 3D Vision and some (all OpenGL) games are not supported by Nvidia’s drivers at all.

Please note that there are also performance penalties with Nvidia’s active shutter method of rendering 3D images. Two frames (left and right) must be generated for each frame in 2D, so your game’s framerate will drop by approximately half when 3D Vision is enabled.

There are also limitations to some PC games that will affect the 3D appearance of some objects in the game in relation to others. For example, some effects may be rendered without full 3D information; common are heads-up displays (HUDs) or crosshair sights for targeting. If this happens, items like these will appear at the wrong depth relative to other items in the game and it can be quite disconcerting and/or distracting.

In some of these cases, the game’s graphics effects can be disabled or minimized to work around these issues, and Nvidia’s 3D Vision GeForce driver usually supplies its own crosshair sight in these cases. To help 3D Vision users, Nvidia pre-defines six levels of game compatibility with 3D Vision and it pops up as an green overlay in every game that may be disabled by ctrl+alt+ins.

3D Vision Ready

Excellent

Good

Fair

Poor

Not Recommended

In addition to these six categories, there is also “not tested” and we will contribute our own findings for a few of these games that Nvidia has not explored – indeed, some older games have superb 3D Vision results. 3D Vision Ready means the game was designed with Nvidia’s 3D Vision and with 3D Vision Surround in mind. There are less than 15 games that are certified as 3D Vision Ready – the best ones that this editor have played so far are Batman Arkham Asylum and Mafia II. We were very disappointed with Bulletstorm although it is rated excellent as the 3D effects are often confusing; and it should not be that way. How does Duke Nukem Forever compare?

The majority of the 70-plus games that ABT has tested fall into the Excellent and Good categories – one outstanding game being Just Cause 2 which gets an excellent rating from Nvidia; especially for the breathtaking panoramic super-widescreen aerial views over Panau. For some of these games, the player may have to adjust or disable some settings and perhaps use Nvidia’s supplied crosshairs for the best experience. Nvidia even offers suggestions on-screen as your game loads. But very few of these compromises are necessary with Duke Nukem Forever; only the post-processing effects (which are iffy anyway) are disabled for 3D Vision.

For this article, I played Duke Nukem Forever on my Core i7-920/GTX 580 for the first play through in both 2D and 3D at maximum details. For the second play through and screenshot harvest, the GTX 560 Ti was the weapon of choice and for 3D Vision Surround, GTX 560 Ti SLI along with the newly released 275.33 WHQL drivers, which include the 3D profiles for this game and the 3D Vision drivers

Before we get back to the game, let’s check out the hardware we used for our Duke Nukem Forever review.

Hardware and System Requirements

Duke Nukem Forever is quite stable and bug free; there were absolutely no issues nor crashes in many hours of playtime which is quite an achievement for a modern game as many are released first and patched later. Nukem Forever is an action-oriented first-person shooter – with the emphasis on action. Players take control of the Duke as they navigate through the levels. The gameplay is similar in some respects to the first-person shooter games of the late 1990s and early 2000s, with each level finishing with a battle in which the Duke has to fight and kill a large alien boss.

Duke Nukem Forever gameplay is relatively varied for a shooter. There are over a dozen enemies and a half dozen unique bosses. Weapons are also varied, well over a dozen to choose from – from the pistol (and you can get achievements by using only the pistol) to the RPG (rocket-propelled grenade launcher) and freeze and shrink-ray weapons with the caveat that you can only carry 2 weapons at a time and you must pick up ammo as it is depleted. Pipe bombs and laser tripwires are not limited by this weapons restriction.

Items that have an effect on the Duke are picked up by the player. These items include steroids, beer, and a holoduke. Steroids increase the strength of the Duke’s melee fist attacks and for a limited time he takes no damage. Beer makes Nukem more resistant to damage, but it blurs the screen and makes it difficult to see. Another of Duke’s weapons is the holoduke which creates a hologram of Duke Nukem that distracts the enemy. While the holoduke effect is working, Nukem becomes invisible and the NPCs do not attack him, instead focusing on the hologram. The holoduke even has some of the Duke’s even more twisted sayings and the jetpack is seen only in multiplayer.

There is also DukeVision which allows the Duke to see in pitch-black areas very much like Riddick in his Escape from Butcher Bay series.

It’s time to wrap it up and conclude our evaluation of Duke Nukem Forever – in 3D.

Conclusion

The Good

Duke Nukem Forever lampoons other video games unmercifully and there are many laugh out loud moments. There is not a lot of exploration. There are only two combat weapons available at any one time and your choice of weapon affects how easy the next encounter will enemy NPCs will. It is a design choice and some modern shooters like Bulletstorm have this “feature”. For this writer, lack of ‘anytime save’ was far more irritating. For some the juvenile and dark humor will be good – others will hate it. And there is still the Duke’s macho attitude about women. The fact that Duke was forced to execute women bearing alien offspring (ala Alien series) was tasteless but it was clear from the voice acting, the Duke took no pleasure in executing the helpless victims.

The Ugly

There are also some issues with the inconsistent post-processing “Post Special Effects” that are applied which tend to blur the scene (especially) indoors as in the following examples.

First we see the scene with the effects ‘Off’ is crystal clear on the opposing wall:

Let’s add the the effects and watch the far wall blur unnaturally although the shadows now look better.

With 3D Vision, the post processing effects are turned off and it gives the best visual experience even over playing in 2D unlike some 3D Vision games like Bulletstorm where the stereo 3D (S3D) implementation is confusing and only gets worse in 3-panel Surround. The added illusion of 3D “depth” actually helps with the jumping and aiming – unlike with other new games (like Alice: Madness Returns where it helps to turn 3D ‘off’ to complete jumps; we will have a 3D Vision/PhysX review of that game next week).

Duke Nukem Forever is only enhanced by 3D Vision. There are no downsides to playing this game whatsoever in S3D and in fact there are advantages to aiming and visualization of your targets. The way enemies shoot back is more intense and you may find yourself flinching at time – much more so than just playing it in the traditional manner. Duke Nukem Forever gets two big thumbs up from this reviewer on the implementation of 3D Vision and also 3D Vision Surround – which is just “more is better” – the widescreen view adds to the game although fortunately most of the action takes place right in front of you.

Picture these missiles whizzing by your nose. You may well feel the urge to flinch in S3D.

There really is no villain – just the aliens to blow away and a stupid President of the United States to contend with. Duke Nukem Forever consists of shooting your way through enemies and solving puzzles to complete an objective; and most of it is satisfying. Unfortunately, there is very little replay value except on a harder difficulty and also to complete certain objectives. Of course, there is also the online multiplayer which is beyond the scope of this review.

For this review, it has been concentrating on the single player aspect of it to try to determine if it is worth fifty or so bucks or not. Most reviews end with a “number” or letter grade assigned to a game to rank it so as to suggest it is better than another. Duke Nukem Forever held this reviewer’s interest all the way through, with some great high points that are worth a further replay.

Duke Nukem Forever has definite flaws as we covered in the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. These detract from the game but do not spoil the fun or the nearly non-stop over-the-top action. In this reviewer’s opinion, Duke Nukem Forever is an above-average game with raunchy humor and solid action that gives it a solid 7/10. It’s a “B-” in 3D Vision and we definitely look forward to further adventures of Duke Nukem as the franchise develops.

“I ain’t dead!
