Got new ones for the kids for school earlier this year, about $800 each.  Ours is old\u2026two years old!<\/p>\n<p>Got a new smartphone a year ago $200 + a 2-year contract.  Upgraded the kids \u201ca little less\u201d + 2 year contract.  Wife is still using a featurephone.<\/p>\n<p>Got the wife and daughter Kindles last Christmas.  Been paying for downloads all the time.<\/p>\n<p>Son just got his tablet (that means iPad).  He\u2019s surfing a lot, watching videos.<\/p>\n<p>But we\u2019ve taken a little breather from buying new mobile devices\u2026we hope.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, analysts\/reporters tell us that the tablet <strong><em>will<\/em><\/strong> be the fastest-selling consumer electronics product!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Premature Demise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>True, the headlines say they\u2019ll kill the computer \u2013 desktop\/laptop \u2013 and everything else in the tablet\u2019s path.<\/p>\n<p>As Comicus exclaimed, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Boy, when you die at the palace, you really DIE at the palace!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Accenture recently reported that this year:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;          Tablets will sell at a 160% rate<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;          Mobile phones will sell at 56% rate<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;          Desktop\/laptop computers &#8211; $39%<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;          Smartphones -26%<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;          Netbooks &#8211; $22%<\/p>\n<p>Projections like these make manufacturers\u2019 redo their production lines.   Retailers load up.<\/p>\n<p>People stand in long lines.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, the breathtaking increases are based on year-over-year growth per category, not quite a level playing field.<\/p>\n<p>Say you increase your team 100 percent (two to four) and they increase theirs only 10 percent (100,000 to 110,000).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>HooBoy!!!!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26294\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-2.jpg?resize=500%2C401\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-2.jpg?resize=500%2C401 500w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-2-300x240.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Figure 2 \u2013 Personal Devices \u2013 <\/strong>Phones \u2013 feature and smart \u2013 outstrip all other personal devices owned by individuals followed by desktop and laptop computers.  But it is the \u201clowly\u201d tablet that has all the noise\/news coverage.  <strong>Source \u2013 Pew Research Center<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Pew Research, eReaders and the sexier tablets aren\u2019t being adopted like most of the other techie things.  Phones are everywhere; but you already know that as you drive\/walk down the street.<\/p>\n<p>What is interesting though is that laptops are as popular as desktop computers, so the analysts may have gotten part of the death march right\u2026desktops are declining but laptops are increasing.<\/p>\n<p>People of all ages are using more laptops because they\u2019re mobile and no one sits still anymore.<\/p>\n<p>But tablets didn\u2019t wipe out eReaders as folks thought when they first hit the market.<\/p>\n<p>Josephus observed, <em>\u201cDamn, this a hip crowd!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tablets are actually gaining a big following for a number of reasons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>eReader Rising<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The eReader \u2013 think Amazon\u2019s Kindle:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;           is easy to read in almost any light<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;          Bezos has a huge library of free, economic books you can effortlessly download<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;          online newspaper service(s)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;          battery life up to 30 days<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;          very reasonable price<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26295\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-3.jpg?resize=195%2C268\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Figure 3 \u2013 Easy Reading \u2013 <\/strong>Amazon\u2019s CEO Jeff Bezos is easy to read\u2026he likes the growth, popularity of the Kindle which can be read virtually anywhere and has very long battery life.  <strong>Source &#8211; Amazon<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re probably saying that all those eReaders are being bought by fogies who just aren\u2019t with it.  Nope\u2026looks like a pretty typical cross section of folks who want to\u2026read.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26296\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=358%2C445\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=358%2C445 358w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-4-241x300.jpg 241w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 4 \u2013 Actual Readers \u2013 <\/strong>While most research firms focus on what consumers will be buying\/using in the future, Pew Research focused on finding out what consumers actually had and were using today.  <strong>Source \u2013 Pew Research Center<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But Cisco reported early this year that content across the Internet was going to increase over 50X in the next few years and EMC\/IDC recently reported data was going to double every two years.<\/p>\n<p>You can bet a lot of that is going to be video. And you\u2019re gonna\u2019 want to search the Web to find it all so obviously you\u2019ll want a tablet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rich Content<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gartner reported that last year about 20,000 tablets (think iPad) were sold and projected that this year the number will be about 55,800 and 154,000+ by 2013.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26297\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=444%2C279\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=444%2C279 444w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-5-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 5 \u2013 Catbird Seat \u2013 <\/strong>As it did with the music player and smartphone, Apple reinvented the media tablet and introduced it with a smooth operating system and an array of applications that meet the needs of consumers.  A dizzying array of other work, play, entertainment apps are also available on their app store.  <strong>Source \u2013 AllThingsD, Adam Tow<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are a lot of tablets promised and a few are available, but it\u2019s a market segment shaped by Apple just as the iPod became the MP3 standard.<\/p>\n<p>As King Louis XVI exclaimed, <em>\u201cIt&#8217;s good to be the king.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Few people will settle for the 7-inch screen when the 10-inch screen is the \u201cstandard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>iPad just works as advertised.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the HP unit will, the Blackberry PlayBook probably won\u2019t, the rest are at the mercy of the work in progress from Google.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll get there; but like phones, they\u2019ll have a remarkable resemblance to the category standard\u2026iPad.<\/p>\n<p>Comicus noted, <em>\u201cI&#8217;m fighting with cardboard!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Just so you can have a similar comparison, below are the tablet results from Pew.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26299\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-6.jpg?resize=408%2C456\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-6.jpg?resize=408%2C456 408w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-6-268x300.jpg 268w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Figure 6 \u2013 Real People \u2013 <\/strong>Focusing on people who actually owned tablets (primarily iPads), Pew Research gave the industry insight into the real demographics of the touchscreen devices.  This will enable designers, marketers, app developers to target market segments rather than broadshoot their efforts.  <strong>Source \u2013 Pew Research Center<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>True, it\u2019s a tablet market; but everyone else is competing against the look, feel, and performance of the iPad.  In a study by Bernstein Research, 50 percent of the respondents said Apple would be the device they would probably choose.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Everything<\/em><\/strong> else was in third place!<\/p>\n<p>Ask people what tablet they want and they say \u201coh any yellow lined one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ask iPad or an equivalent and they know immediately what you\u2019re talking about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adults Interested in an iPad<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26300\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-7.jpg?resize=328%2C352\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-7.jpg?resize=328%2C352 328w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-7-279x300.jpg 279w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 328px) 100vw, 328px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 7 \u2013 Desires \u2013 <\/strong>When people asked if they would like to buy an iPad, the interest levels grew significantly.  Male\/female interest was very similar but clearly millennials wanted the device for web surfing, email, photos, videos, games.  <strong>Source \u2013 Vision Critical<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Except for the folks in the C-offices and folks who aren\u2019t real knowledge workers, the tablet  is still a secondary device to use on the road or in boring meetings to access email, check the calendar, web search, and deliver brilliant presentations and watching videos\/movies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blurred Lines<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Increasingly, people are bringing in their own devices \u2013 notebooks, smartphones, and tablets to work.  As more business apps are available, the tablet will be used for even more \u201coffice activities\u201d \u2026 yeah, right!<\/p>\n<p>The challenge for IT people will be ensuring that they have adequate security in place, which is still  an issue with the iPhone your boss told them to support.<\/p>\n<p>IT managers are quoting Count De Monet, <em>\u201cIt is said that the people are revolting.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When the pain level drops, IT will add business\/enterprise applications for the tablets.  Don\u2019t worry, you\u2019ll still leave the office with your notebook, smartphone, tablet\u2026knowledge warriors have to be prepared for anything.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26301\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-8.jpg?resize=500%2C277\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-8.jpg?resize=500%2C277 500w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-8-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Figure 8 \u2013 Tablet Growth \u2013 <\/strong>While purchase growth for notebook computers continues a steady increase, the annualized growth percentages and numbers have slowed.  Tablet sales are going to increase steadily in the coming years.  <strong>Source &#8211; Gartner<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We know it\u2019s tough for Apple fans to admit, but Jobs\/team missed a golden opportunity by forgetting their roots.<br \/>\n<strong><em>What???<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nLeapFrog just introduced their new $100 LeapPad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Babies First Tablet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not at all like the original LeapPad, this is a rugged 5-inch touch screen that includes a video camera, mike and a whopping 2GB of memory.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26302\" title=\"Untitled-9\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-9.jpg?resize=245%2C274\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Figure 9 \u2013 Baby Steps \u2013 <\/strong>LeapFrog\u2019s new LeapPad could be the Christmas run-away hit because it has the price point and features\/apps that parents will not only be able to afford, but will purchase to increase their children\u2019s learning experience.   Don\u2019t forget the boomer grandparents who want to help the little ones along.  <strong>Source &#8211; LeapFrog<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It will work as a kid\u2019s ebook reader, play videos, personalize photos and they promise a full array of content and apps in the months ahead (plan your Christmas list early).<\/p>\n<p>This will keep your kid\u2019s grimy, jelly-stained fingers off your iPad and be a great educational tool they can work with until it\u2019s time for school and a <strong><em>real<\/em><\/strong> tablet.<\/p>\n<p>Think about it\u2026.Apple got their market lock early by focusing on school kids.<\/p>\n<p>An iPad kids version could have brainwashed them while they were in diapers and from then on\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-101.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26304\" title=\"Untitled-10\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-101.jpg?resize=317%2C219\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-101.jpg?resize=317%2C219 317w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Untitled-101-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 317px) 100vw, 317px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Torquemada said as he was carried to the stage by the Apple shareholders, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>I asked &#8217;em nicely!
