ATTICA! \u201c\u2013 Sonny, \u201cDog Day Afternoon,\u201d Warner Bros (1975)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What\u2019s the biggest challenge, stress facing national, state, regional, local governments?\u00a0 What stresses you, your family?<br \/>\nIt\u2019s money\u2026dollars, pounds, yen, euro, rupee, peso, rand, won\u2026.you name it.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone struggles with their annual budget, but it seems like no one stays within it. Just look at the state of the global economy.<\/p>\n<p>Thank gawd for credit cards!\u00a0 They\u2019re sorta\u2019 like virtual money.<\/p>\n<p>With nearly everyone, everywhere having a mobile device; heck, we might as go all the way.\u00a0 It would eco-friendly. It\u2019s becoming logical.<\/p>\n<p>In 20 or 30 years, people will deal in whatever we call digital money then and will say, \u201cCan you believe it they actually used germ-ridden coins and paper in exchange for products, services?\u00a0 How quaint!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The IMF (International Monetary Fund) recently reported that only about two billion+ people worldwide have bank accounts.\u00a0 However, there are approximately four billion cell phones (mobile phones of all types).<\/p>\n<p>In developing countries and cash- based societies in South Asia, Latin America, India, Africa, they may be financially strapped, but mobile communications is everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>They may not have phone lines to their homes; many don\u2019t even have what you would consider a home.\u00a0 But without the wired infrastructure, they\u2019ve been able to leapfrog your old landline and use m-commerce from the outset.<br \/>\nAfrica, the second largest continent on the planet, is home to more than one billion people.<\/p>\n<p>India is home to more than 600 million people (90 percent of the transactions are in cash, compared to 14 percent in the U.S.) so using super-cheap cell phones and m-commerce was a snap.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/cash-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26512\" title=\"cash 2\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/cash-2.jpg?resize=410%2C518\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/cash-2.jpg?resize=410%2C518 410w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/cash-2-237x300.jpg 237w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Figure 2 \u2013 Cash Anywhere \u2013 Services such as Obopay have become well-accepted in highly populated, lower-income countries such as the African continent, India and Southeast Asia to transfer funds almost anywhere without the need for paper cash.\u00a0 The mobile phone service is also popular because banks are few and far between.\u00a0 Mobile payments are growing slowly in industrial countries because of the strong banking infrastructure and rush for every player to be involved\u2026somehow.\u00a0 Source &#8211; Obopay<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These people quickly found it easier to pay \u2013 or send money to someone \u2013 with a cellphone than it is to give them a cow, chicken, pig or vegetables as payment.<\/p>\n<p>And you thought you had it tough carrying around that bulky billfold!<\/p>\n<p>Of course, m-payment has an ugly side.\u00a0 It\u2019s a great way to hide drug trade, money laundering and terrorism financing activities<\/p>\n<p>As Sheldon warned, \u201cI wouldn&#8217;t like to kill you. I will if I have to.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>But mobile money has grown rapidly in poorer countries and the potential in industrialized countries is even more promising:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0The mobile transaction market is so huge it offers room for multiple players. Yearly worldwide electronic transactions total $7-$10 TRILLION<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Competitors are generally local to each country or region, leaving plenty of open territory for mobile payment service and technology companies.\u00a0 Companies that win in their markets will be those that understand customer needs.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0PayPal in the U.S., which has traditionally catered to merchant accounts, most likely will adopt a similar mobile strategy. (Both Obopay and PayPal are service providers\u2013not technology companies like Fundamo in South Africa that provides software solutions for service companies.)<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u201cThe competition is cash\u201d\u2013not the other players in this market space<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0In five to ten years, mobile payments will achieve high adoption among consumers in developing and developed countries.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Brazil, Russia, China and Mexico offer growth opportunities for players that understand these markets<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0According to Portio Research, mobile commerce payments are estimated to climb to $86.6 billion in 2011.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Nielsen predicts 27% of all U.S. payments will still be cash by 2012.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26513\" title=\"Cash 3\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-3.jpg?resize=720%2C414\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-3.jpg?resize=720%2C414 740w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-3-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Figure 3 \u2013 Phone Wish List \u2013 Smartphone users are hungry for apps that let them do more, play more; and putting all of their financial activity seems like the next giant step for them.\u00a0 Source \u2013 Sony Ericsson<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The key is to find a balance between the speed\/ease of m-payments and the need to protect accounts against abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, rather than plain old cell phones, device manufacturers and service providers want a \u201cbetter\u201d solution.\u00a0\u00a0 To get things rolling a single technical standard called Near Field Communication (NFC) was developed.<\/p>\n<p>Snap-in chips for current phones exist today.\u00a0 Apple, HTC, Samsung and the rest will be introducing NFC-enabled phones this year.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26514\" title=\"Cash 4\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-4.jpg?resize=496%2C332\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-4.jpg?resize=496%2C332 709w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-4-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 496px) 100vw, 496px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Figure 4 \u2013 Enabled Phones \u2013 NFC- (Near Field Contact) enabled phones will hit the market this year and will be in widespread use by 2015.\u00a0 The most important hurdle will be to get companion devices into retail establishments.\u00a0 Source \u2013 HIS iSuppli<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While Africa, Southeast Asia and Latin America may be ahead in the use of m-payments; North America and Western Europe will account for 50 percent of the spending, surpassing the Asian market.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the average Western European and American credit cardholders carry 3.5 credit cards, according to the Federal Reserve Bank.\u00a0 People use those chunks of plastic to pay not just large-ticket items, but household goods, utilities, insurance premiums, student loans, you name it.<\/p>\n<p>Folks use \u2018em so much, they wear out the magnetic strip.<\/p>\n<p>Sheldon saw what was being done and commented, \u201cYou handled yourself real well, Sonny. But you handled it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>European and U.S. carriers are aggressively investing to enable folks to pay for stuff simply by waving their mobile device across a reader or \u201csend\u201d the payment info.<\/p>\n<p>In the Americas, it looks like a five-way race with everyone wanting to ensure he\/she isn\u2019t left behind.\u00a0 There are banks and credit card co-ops (Visa, MasterCard), online merchants (Amazon, eBay, Google), carriers &#8212; Verizon, AT&amp;T, Sprint, T-Mobile, handset builders (Nokia, HTC, Samsung, Apple Motorola) and Facebook.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26515\" title=\"Cash 5\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-5.jpg?resize=382%2C242\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-5.jpg?resize=382%2C242 382w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-5-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Figure 5 \u2013 Apps Appearing \u2013 Banks, credit card companies and other financial institutions are already making iOS and Android apps available to customers to speed transactions, lower their transaction costs and improve customer retention.\u00a0 The use of mobile device transactions also provides the service providers with a goldmine of information about the individual and his\/her transactions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Analysts anticipate the smartphone will do everything, serving as their digital wallet and more\u2026and do it safely, securely.<br \/>\nUS Mobile Commerce by 2016<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26516\" title=\"Cash 6\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-6.jpg?resize=500%2C244\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-6.jpg?resize=500%2C244 834w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-6-300x146.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Figure 6 \u2013 Big Exchange \u2013 While mobile commerce is only in its infancy, it has already produced some impressive numbers in terms of number of activated apps and individual usage.\u00a0 As enabled mobile phones and retail devices become more common, the smartphone transaction will become routine, rather than the exception.\u00a0 Source \u2013 Forrester Research<br \/>\nWhen you combine m-payment with geo location technology that already exists, you have a helluva\u2019 marketing opportunity for organizations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sheldon explained, \u201cI&#8217;d like to work with you on this, not against you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also creates a great opportunity for hactivists and cybercriminals<\/p>\n<p>The answer?<\/p>\n<p>Another standard you won\u2019t see but will depend on &#8212; Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS),<br \/>\nPCI DSS had better work!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s designed to protect&#8211;not only databases, but also file shares and sites that house spreadsheets and documents.\u00a0 It\u2019s needed to manage authorization, access control and auditing of all unstructured and semi-structured data stores.<\/p>\n<p>Or\u2026all the stuff the bad guys\/gals want!<\/p>\n<p>Any hint that Google, Apple, service providers, banks, whoever didn\u2019t provide adequate protection of your data means they lose\u2026big time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0 Loss of income from fraudulent transaction<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0 Cost to reissue cards\/certificates<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0 Costs of investigation and possible litigation<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0 Possible fines imposed by credit service provider<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0 Loss of reputation, customer confidence and business<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0 Possible loss of ability to process charges<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So\u2026who you gonna\u2019 trust?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26517\" title=\"Cash 7\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-7.jpg?resize=473%2C294\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-7.jpg?resize=473%2C294 788w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-7-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Figure 7 \u2013 Service Trust \u2013 The challenge for hardware\/software\/service providers will be to gain the trust of users that they will provide the best level of customer service, handle the transactions seamlessly and protect the individual\u2019s personal\/private information.\u00a0 Source &#8211; Retrevo<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>All of the folks \u2013 banks, device\/software providers, carriers &#8212; have some parts of the whole.\u00a0 No one has it all.<\/p>\n<p>That means they\u2019ll have to develop coopative (cooperative, competitive).relationships to get their share of your transaction and the information\u2026ah, the information.<\/p>\n<p>If you use currency for all your transactions you sorta\u2019 fly below \u201ctheir\u201d radar.\u00a0 Manufacturers, retailers, service providers, banks, etc. don\u2019t know what you\u2019re doing, when you do it, where you do it.<\/p>\n<p>Use plastic and they can do a decent job of tracking your activity.\u00a0 It takes them time, effort, cooperation; but they can figure it out.<\/p>\n<p>The growth of\u00a0 m-commerce will provide:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0 feedback could be (will be) instantaneous, richer, more detailed<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0 a new level of location-sensitive features can be deployed<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0 manufacturers, retailers can share your profile and purchasing history information so items can be recommended based on your buying patterns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All of the potential players have a different perspective, different skills, different set of competitive advantages , different track record\/image.<\/p>\n<p>No one wants to miss out on the huge revenue pie.\u00a0 No one wants to pay the other guy transmission, access, system, processing fees.<\/p>\n<p>So if money is going to be accumulated, traded and transferred online, you might as well use one that exists only online and has real-world value\u2026say Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>Gotta\u2019 be worth as much as your country\u2019s national debt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26518\" title=\"Cash 8\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-8.jpg?resize=381%2C218\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-8.jpg?resize=381%2C218 381w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Cash-8-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Sonny looked and said, \u201cForget it.
