This product featured AMD&#8217;s Eyefinity Technology and they were among the first cards to have Direct 11 compatibility and Shader Model 5 support. The ATI Radeon HD 5770 had extraordinary performance for its price point and it has been one of the most successful products in the AMD lineup.\u00a0 AMD has continued the ATI Radeon HD 5770 legacy by adding some features and rebranding it as the HD 6770 GPU.\u00a0 And we are going to look at two very different HD 6770s from a performance standpoint.<\/p>\n<p>The Radeon HD 6770 is a slightly updated version and a rebrand of the HD 5770.\u00a0 Although they use the same core, The Radeon 6770 has an improved video playback engine, BluRay 3D support and HDMI 1.4a.\u00a0 One might believe that these are among the least interesting cards to gamers yet they can tell us much about the architecture of their respective series. And most importantly, we will let you know if you should even bother to use them for DX11 PC gaming at all or just buy them primarily for home theater PC (HTPC) and use them for light gaming.<\/p>\n<p>We put our two HD 6770 Radeon cards through their paces this week with the very latest Catalyst beta performance drivers 11.8.\u00a0 This driver brought some good performance increases over the WHQL 11-7 Catalyst drivers. We also used the 280.26 WHQL drivers for the GeForce cards that were released last week which also brought good performance increases over the launch drivers for the GTX 550 Ti.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Is the GTX 550 Ti and the HD 6770 worth about the same price?<\/h3>\n<p>We naturally want to know if the HD 6770 is worth the same approximately $130 as the stock and overclocked GTX 550 Ti which are now regularly in about the same price range. Please note that we are also testing cards that cost up to $140 so you can see where these cards fit in as to performance and features. We will do the testing and then you can answer these questions for yourself together with us in our conclusion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/sidebyside-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-26782\" title=\"sidebyside-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/sidebyside-2.jpg?resize=300%2C107\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/sidebyside-2.jpg?resize=300%2C107 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/sidebyside-2.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We now bench with 20 modern games and with 3 synthetic benchmarks generally using 1920&#215;1200 and 1680&#215;1050 resolutions and with an emphasis on DX11 games &#8211; 1 open GL, 4 DX9, 5 DX10, and 10 DX11 games.\u00a0 We will also overclock our Radeons and bench some games at the super-widescreen resolution of 5780&#215;1060 and with CrossFired HD 6770s.\u00a0 We will let you know if the Passively-cooled Gigabyte and the HIS Turbo IceQ HD 6770s play well together in CrossFire and what their temperatures are like.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Since we are using mid-level enthusiast GPU video cards, it makes sense to test them at their highest playable resolutions and with the most demanding playable settings that they can handle. the passively-cooled and the overclocked HD 6770 vs. the overclocked GTX 550 Ti<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The passively-cooled Gigabyte HD 6770<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is an interesting card with a massive heatsink that is cooled without an attached VGA fan.\u00a0 It requires that your case have at least decent cooling and that you also make sure that it will fit in your case before you buy it.\u00a0 What is interesting is that this card is clocked at the reference clocks of the HD 6770 (850\/1200MHz) and appears to be able to overclock further!\u00a0 We definitely will test this out and we are also quite tempted to strap some fans on this massive heatsink; They used layered fins with aluminum nodes to lower the GPU&#8217;s operating temperature. They also increased the cooling surface area by over 600% and claim the GV-R677SL-1GD can be over clocked by up to 30%.\u00a0 We shall see.<\/p>\n<p>Of course this video card is DirectX-11 compliant and also supports AMD Eyefinity, CrossFireX, and Avivo HD. The game&#8217;s primary characters are superbly voiced.<\/p>\n<p>The game is played as an over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective action-adventure game with a primary focus on Batman&#8217;s combat abilities, stealth, detective skills and complete with an arsenal of gadgets that can be used in both combat and as exploring in &#8220;detective mode&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><em>Batman: Arkham Asylum <\/em>uses a highly modified version of the Unreal Engine 3. It does not support AA natively but must be added in and supported by the game&#8217;s developer. There are four game modes: a single-player mode in which your allies are controlled by AI; a four-player, co-op campaign mode; an eight-player online versus mode; and a four-player survival mode. In all modes, an artificial intelligence (AI), dubbed the &#8220;Director&#8221;, controls pacing and spawns, to create a more dynamic experience with increased replay value. It remains one of the most demanding games for any PC and it is also still one of the most beautiful games released to date. <em>Crysis<\/em> is based in a fictional near-future where an alien spacecraft is discovered buried on an island near the coast of Korea. The single-player campaign has you assume the role of USA Delta Force, \u2018Nomad\u2019 who is armed with futuristic weapons and equipment. <em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Crysis<\/em> uses DirectX10 for graphics rendering. A standalone but related game, <em>Crysis Warhea<\/em>d was released the following year. CryEngine2 is the game engine used to power <em>Crysis<\/em> and <em>Warhead<\/em> and it is an extended version of the CryEngine that also powers <em>Far Cry<\/em>. As well as supporting Shader Model 2.0, 3.0, and DirectX10\u2019s 4.0, CryEngine2 is also multi-threaded to take advantage of dual core SMP-aware systems and Crytek has developed their own proprietary physics system, called CryPhysics.<\/p>\n<p>It is noted that actually playing this game is a bit slower than the demo implies. All of our settings are set to the in-game maximum&#8217;s &#8220;very high&#8221; including 2xAA for 1920&#215;1200 and 1680&#215;1050 and we force 16xAF in the control panels. Ubisoft created it based on their Dunia Engine. The game setting takes place in an unnamed African country, during an uprising between two rival warring factions. Your mission is to kill \u201cThe Jackal\u201d; the Nietzsche-quoting mercenary that arms both sides of the conflict that you are dropped into.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Far Cry 2<\/em> game world is loaded in the background and on the fly to create a completely seamless open world. The Dunia game engine provides good visuals that scale well. The <em>Far Cry 2<\/em> design team actually went to Africa to give added realism to this game. The expansion, <em>Soviet Assault<\/em>, was released in 2009.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Although it is generally considered a real-time strategy (RTS) game, <em>World in Conflict <\/em>includes gameplay typical of real-time tactical (RTT) games. <em>WiC<\/em> is filled with real vehicles from both the Russian and the American military. There are also tactical aids, including calling in massive bombing raids, access to chemical warfare, nuclear weapons, and far more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here is yet another amazing and very customizable and detailed DX10 benchmark that is available in-game or as a stand-alone. We use the full retail game&#8217;s in-game benchmark as it offers more settings than the demo and is updated by patches. The particle effects and explosions in <em>World in Conflict Soviet Assault<\/em> are truly spectacular! Rico Rodriguez returns as the protagonist who aims to overthrow the evil dictator &#8220;Baby&#8221; Panay and also to confront his former boss, rogue agent Tom Sheldon. The game play is similar to that of its predecessor in that the player is free to roam the huge open world without a need to focus on the storyline. The <em>Just Cause 2<\/em> AI has been rewritten and it even includes dual-grappling hooks which give players the ability to tether unlimited objects to each other including the tethering of enemies to vehicles and to each other which works very well as one of your goals is to cause maximum chaos. The game is the seventh installment in the Resident Evil series and it was released for Windows in September 2009. Resident Evil 5 revolves around two investigators pulled into a bio-terrorist threat in a fictional town in Africa. <em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Resident Evil 5<\/em> features online co-op play over the internet and also takes advantage of Nvidia\u2019s 3D Vision technology. The PC version comes with exclusive content the consoles do not have. The developer&#8217;s emphasis is in optimizing high frame rates but they have implemented HDR, tone mapping, depth of field and motion blur into the game.<\/p>\n<p><em>Resident Evil 5<\/em>&#8216;s custom game engine, \u2018MT Framework&#8217;, already supports DX10 to benefit from less memory usage and faster loading. <em>Resident Evil 5<\/em> gives you choice as to DX10 or Dx 9 and we naturally ran the DX10 pathway. There are two benchmarks built-into <em>Resident Evil 5<\/em>. We chose the variable benchmark. In both games, the player assumes the identity of a S.T.A.L.K.E.R.; an illegal artifact scavenger in \u201cThe Zone\u201d which encompasses about 30 square kilometers. It is the location of an alternate reality story surrounding the Chernobyl Power Plant after another (fictitious) explosion. <em>S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Call of Pripyat<\/em> features \u201ca living breathing world\u201d with highly developed NPC creature AI.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Call of Pripyat <\/em>is compatible with DirectX 8, 9, 10 and 10.1. It uses the X-ray 1.6 Engine<strong> <\/strong>with dX 11, one outstanding feature being the inclusion of real-time GPU tesselation\u2013 a Shader model 3.0 &amp; 4.0 graphics engine featuring HDR, parallax and normal mapping, soft shadows, motion blur, weather effects and day-to-night cycles. As with other engines using deferred shading, the original DX9c X-ray Engine does not support anti-aliasing with dynamic lighting enabled, although the DX10 and DX 11 versions do.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We are using the stand-alone official benchmark by <em>Clear Sky\u2019<\/em>s creators. We picked the most stressful test out of the four, \u201cSun shafts\u201d. It brings the heaviest penalty due to its extreme use of shaders to create DX10\/DX10.1 and DX11 effects. Alien vs Predators DX11 benchmark is a stand alone bench that as the name says is only for DX11 cards. The full game was released in March 2009. <em>BattleForge <\/em>is a card-based RTS that revolves around acquiring and winning by means of micro-transactions for buying new cards. By May, 2009, BattleForge became a Play 4 Free game with fewer cards than the retail version. <em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>BattleForge<\/em> supports Directx 11 with full support for hardware tesselation. It is very impressive visually and quite demanding on any system. The game is based on the novel &#8220;Metro 2033&#8221; by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky. It was developed by 4A Games in Ukraine and released in March 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The game utilizes multi-platform 4A Engine and there is some doubt if the games engine is related to the original XRay engine used in <em>S.T.A.L.K.E.R.<\/em>. The <em>Metro 2033 <\/em>story takes place mostly in post-apocalyptic Moscow&#8217;s metro system but occasionally the player has to go above ground on some missions and to search for valuables. <em>Metro 2033<\/em>&#8216;s locations reflect the dark atmosphere of real metro tunnels but in a much more dangerous and lethal manner. Strange phenomena and noises are frequent, and mostly the player has to rely only on their flashlight to find their way around in otherwise total darkness. There are three benchmarks that can be run from a command line and we chose the &#8220;lateGameView&#8221; Benchmark as it looks to be a good test. It uses DX11 and heavy tessellation which will strain any graphics card. At least two DX11 games based on Unigine are expected to be released this year. We use the setting for &#8220;extreme tessellation&#8221; and high shaders and we also set 2xAA\/16xAF. 5760&#215;1080<\/h2>\n<p>AMD&#8217;s HD 6770 is able to handle 3-panel Eyefinity without the need for CrossFiring them.\u00a0 Nvidia requires a second video card in SLI to provide a competing solution called &#8220;Surround&#8221; one passively-cooled and once actively cooled.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Temperatures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our ambient (room temperatures) were quite warm &#8211; 80F &#8211; so as to approximate a warm Summer day.\u00a0 Be aware that we used our <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/thermaltake-element-g-case\">Thermaltake Element G<\/a> case which has excellent airflow for an oversized midtower.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ProfessionallyImaged.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ProfessionallyImaged.jpg?resize=315%2C368\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To be totally fair, we turned the case fans to their very lowest rpms for both quietness and to not give our cards an unfair advantage over a hotter running case.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/temps.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26811\" title=\"temps\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/temps.jpg?resize=482%2C412\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/temps.jpg?resize=482%2C412 482w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/temps-300x256.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On a hot day, there is a big jump from idle temperatures to maximum load and overclocking definitely has an impact to raise temperatures.\u00a0 Yet we find that both HD 6770s run very cool and the massive heatsink of the passively-cooled Gigabyte does an awesome job of keeping the card cool &#8211; even as the top card in CrossFire.<\/p>\n<p>The HIS IceQ Turbo X heatsink\/fan does an excellent job of keeping the card cool and we never saw it spin up over 45% which meant that it was barely heard over the (very quiet) case and CPU fans.\u00a0 In fact, we noted a tiny bit of electrical noise coming from our passively-cooled Gigabyte when it was under extreme load &#8211; a slight &#8216;click&#8217; with the ever-changing framerates.\u00a0 We are not certain if this slight noise is coming from our single sample or is in every card, but it is no deal breaker as it is still quieter overall than the HIS (or EVGA GTX 550 Ti).<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s head over to our conclusion.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: Conclusion--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This has been quite an enjoyable exploration for us in revisiting our EVGA GTX 550 Ti evaluation 5 months after launch and comparing it to the HD 6770.\u00a0 We are a bit unhappy with a straight rebrand of the HD 6770 &#8211; with only a few new features including HDMI 1.4 so you can enjoy HD3D and BluRay movies.\u00a0 Of course, we would always like more performance especially for DX11 gaming, but we see that these sub-$150 cards offer great features for a lower price than the HD 5770s at their own launch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We see that AMD&#8217;s partners are working on features and unique capabilities to put passively-cooled and quiet overclocked HD 6770s on the market to give us great choice.\u00a0 We see good overclockability from even a passively-cooled card and either of these cards would be a great choice for HTPC, the Gigabyte card being the overall quietest card.\u00a0 So let&#8217;s look at the Pros and Cons of each HD 6770:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">HD 6770<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Pros<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Price &#8211; for sub-$150 it is a versatile card that can be used for light DX11 gaming or as a HTPC card &#8211; &#8220;all-in-one&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>HD 6770 offers HDMI 1.4, HD3D and BluRay playback not found in the HD 5770 series<\/li>\n<li>CrossFire will bring two of these cards up to HD 6970 speeds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\u00a0Gigabye HD 6770<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Unique product &#8211; an almost-silent card that can be used for HTPC and light DX11 gaming.Further customization possible by adding fans!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">HIS HD 6770<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>And inexpensive and good-looking videocard that overclocks well, stays cool and is quiet!<\/li>\n<li>DiRT 3 download included!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Cons<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>There is no performance improvement over the HD 5770;HD 6770 is a rebrand.<\/li>\n<li>Performance is low for 2011&#8217;s DX11 cards<\/li>\n<li>The GTX 550 Ti offers excellent competition with its own feature set and great performance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">HIS HD 6770<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>none<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">Gigabyte HD 6770<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Somewhat expensive at $138 and the evaluation sample was not &#8220;dead silent&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>The Verdict:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are buying a sub $150 right now the HD 6770 is a great value and bang-for-buck gaming video card that will do double duty as a gaming card for light DX11 titles and also as a HTPC card.\u00a0 They offer a great feature set including offering 3-panel Eyefinity from a single card.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We do not know what the future will bring, but these HD 6770s bring decent performers to the Radeon family.\u00a0 This editor believes that AMD and their partners bring very full-featured DX11 videocards to the market that will find good acceptance among customers and their fans alike.<\/p>\n<p>If you currently game on an older generation video card, you will do yourself a big favor by upgrading. The move to a HD 6770 will give you better visuals on the DX11 pathway and you are no doubt thinking of CrossFire-X if you want to get even higher performance. Perhaps you want to use Eyefinity\u2019s multi-panel display which we will continue to explore in future articles versus 3-panel Surround.<\/p>\n<p>The competition is hot as the prices on even the new video cards have softened and Nvidia offers their own set of features including PhysX, CUDA and 3D Vision with their GTX 550 Ti.
