Representing the Nvidia cards, we will test the GTX 580 and the GTX 590 so as to give us a sampling of the highest performing cards including multi-GPU.\u00a0 In addition, we will also test using a lower-end GTX 550 Ti with less demanding resolutions and settings.\u00a0 The settings are marked on the charts and &#8216;ultra&#8217; or the highest setting is always picked when there is a choice, except as noted.<\/p>\n<p>We are using our overclocked Core i7-920 at 3.8 GHz and we use similar settings for our high end cards that we used for our <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/introducing-the-new-phenom-ii-980-be-vs-core-i7-920-value-meets-performance-again\">Introducing the New Phenom II 980 BE vs. Core i7-920<\/a> article.\u00a0 Any changes are noted on the chart. \u00a0 The GTX 550 Ti settings mostly correspond to last week&#8217;s article, <a href=\"..\/the-passive-gigabyte-overclocked-his-hd-6770-meet-the-evga-gtx-560-ti\">The Passive Gigabyte &amp; Overclocked HIS HD 6770 meet the EVGA GTX 550 Ti.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This time we are testing with the GTX 590 which uses two down-clocked GTX 580 cores in SLI. The percentage of change from upgrading the drivers should remain about the same for any capable CPU platform.<\/p>\n<p>We are going to test GeForce 280.26 versus the last GeForce 275.33 driver using our current benchmark suite of 20 modern PC games plus three synthetic benchmarks, Heaven 2.5, 3DMark11 and Vantage. Our testing platform is Windows 7 64-bit using Intel Core i7-920 at 3.80 GHz, 6 GB DD3, and our Nvidia video cards are a GTX 580 and a GTX 590. We also noted a lot of improvements for 3D Vision and that <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/3d-vision-news-viewsonics-new-3d-vision-displaysuper-street-fighter-iv-now-rated-ready\"><em>Street Figher IV<\/em><\/a> and <em>Crysis 2<\/em> were upgraded to &#8220;3D Vision Ready&#8221; with these 280 drivers.\u00a0 Since the driver upgrade, each game looks spectacular in Stereoscopic 3D (S3D)! We also appreciated the very useful features in Nvidia&#8217;s GeForce 280 drivers and we recommend that you download and upgrade to the very latest drivers no matter which Nvidia video card that you may have!<\/p>\n<p>We have to also give our highest recommendation to the latest GeForce drivers. In many cases they provide slight performance increases with no real negatives that we have encountered. We will be back to compare performance of the new GeForce WHQL drivers when they are (probably) released next month and we shall also cover AMD&#8217;s Catalyst 11-8 later on next week as we compare performance of the HD 6990 to GTX 590, the HD 6770 to the GTX 580 and the HD 5770 to GTX 550 Ti.
