IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The best, most powerful marketing\/sales tool companies have is satisfied customers.<\/p>\n<p>Word of mouth leads to 50+% of most purchasing decisions.<\/p>\n<p>It beats ads\u2026literature\u2026trade shows\u2026demos\u2026publicity\u2026you name it, hands down!<\/p>\n<p>The very best sources, according to Forrester research, are family members or friends.<\/p>\n<p>Then, according to ORC (Opinion Research Corp), they check:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>customer reviews\/ratings \u2013 57%<\/li>\n<li>blogs\/forums \u2013 50%<\/li>\n<li>online videos \u2013 48%<\/li>\n<li>social sites \u2013 43%<\/li>\n<li>RSS feeds \u2013 27%<\/li>\n<li>Microblogs \u2013 8%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yep\u2026customer-generated information\u2026the brain trust in the office, mom\/dad\/kids, guy down the street.<\/p>\n<p>Company generated content is believed \u201ca little\u201d but input from real people, real users carry a lot more weight.<\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Users Who Trust Consumer Reviews<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>More than the Manufacturer\u2019s Brand Description<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Untitled-45.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27448\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Untitled-45.jpg?resize=366%2C178\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Untitled-45.jpg?resize=366%2C178 366w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Untitled-45-300x145.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 366px) 100vw, 366px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Who Do You Trust \u2013 <\/strong>When people want to get credible information about a company, its products\/services, support; they turn to friends&#8211;either friends in person or friends on the Web.\u00a0 As a last resort, they\u2019ll partially believe the company\u2019s \u201cads.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8212; EXPO<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As Gracie observed, <em>\u201cbetrayal implies an action, you just stood there.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Instead of having an elaborate social media outreach effort, companies need to spend their time, money, effort ensuring that their existing customers are satisfied \u2013 maybe even insanely happy.<\/p>\n<p>Then, they\u2019ll tell everyone else and the fever will grow.<\/p>\n<p>Loyal customers do the company\u2019s marketing\/sales pro bono.\u00a0 They defend the company\/products online\/off.<\/p>\n<p>These folks are the ones who keep firms from becoming commodity sellers\u2026just ask Jobs!<\/p>\n<p>You drive customer loyalty with customer service.<\/p>\n<p>And according to Forrester\u2019s Zach Hofer-Shall, customer service isn\u2019t a department, a job function.\u00a0 Every employee has skin in the game.<\/p>\n<p>In a time when we\u2019re seeing more cheap store brands being offered, the team goal is to secure lifelong brand loyalty\u2026win new customers and keep them for a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not easy, because you have to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>offer excellent, immediate customer care<\/li>\n<li>build your brand as a customer-centric business<\/li>\n<li>solve problems quickly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to ORC, companies are welcome in their communities as long as you follow the rules (their rules):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>51% said companies should have a presence but only interact with consumers as needed or by request<\/li>\n<li>34% feel companies should be in social media and interact regularly<\/li>\n<li>15% think companies should sit in the balcony or stay home<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Sloan Center of Internet Retailing developed a set of recommendations that work for online\/brick-and-mortar resellers\/manufacturers, B2B\/B2C firms.<\/p>\n<p>Step one is tough \u2013 <strong><em>listen<\/em><\/strong> &#8212; monitor and analyze what is being said about you\/your products online.\u00a0 Whether you believe it or not, like it or not they\u2019re talking.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it \u201cfeels\u201d like the only people who are using social media are the ones who totally hate the company\/the product.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the online feedback, online reviews are positive; you know, the fun ones to read, pass around, show your boss.<\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Tone of Online Feedback for Products and Services<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Untitled-54.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27449\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Untitled-54.jpg?resize=407%2C190\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Untitled-54.jpg?resize=407%2C190 407w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Untitled-54-300x140.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 407px) 100vw, 407px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Not All Bad &#8211; <\/strong>\u00a0You would swear the reviews all come from people with rotten experiences; but the truth is, most of the reviews are good or at least neutral.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8211; Bazaarvoice<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Cherish them, because the negatives sell more papers, get more eyeballs, get more clicks.<\/p>\n<p>If there\u2019s a problem, an issue, resolve it in realtime.<\/p>\n<p>If it\u2019s a misunderstanding, poor application of the product\/service or operator error, respond it with the same sense of urgency.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, the customer invested the time, money, effort in your product\/service; so within reason, focus on making him\/her a fan.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, solving the problem\/the issue is best done offline to determine and solve it 1:1.<\/p>\n<p>Do it right and you\u2019ve won another fan that will spread the word.<\/p>\n<p>When you receive good inputs, ideas from users, tell \u2018em so.\u00a0\u00a0 Recognize their contributions in their online community.<\/p>\n<p>Then \u201cborrow\u201d the idea, product inputs, recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, you\u2019ll get a few bumps, bruises; but you also have a WW product\/market research team, without all the overhead.<\/p>\n<p>Do it right and you win fans that will spread the word to their friends who will tell their friends who will\u2026<\/p>\n<p>But the online world isn\u2019t all peaches and cream.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Untitled-64.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27450\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Untitled-64.jpg?resize=196%2C181\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>OMG \u2013 <\/strong>Being attacked online and in realtime (especially for the world to see) is not for newbies.\u00a0 As quickly as possible, move the discussion offline; and if it\u2019s a discussion that can\u2019t end well\u2026cut your losses.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some battles you can\u2019t win.<\/p>\n<p>As Herb Kelleher, founder of Southwest Airlines, said, <em>\u201cThe customer is sometimes wrong. We don\u2019t carry those sorts of customers. We write to them and say, \u2018Fly somebody else. Don\u2019t abuse our people.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If the individual is wrong or beyond reason\/beyond hope, keep the discussion on an adult level.\u00a0 When reason\/logic come up short, thank them for being a customer and wish them well.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re better of without them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step two<\/strong> \u2013 experiment.\u00a0 Web 2.0 and social media are so new there are no absolute rights or wrongs (despite what self-proclaimed experts will tell you).\u00a0 Make them small experiments, because big experiments can fail big.\u00a0 Give your customers a place \u2013 blog or user feedback forum where they can to offer feedback about your products and services.<\/p>\n<p>Keep it open, keep it professional.\u00a0 Real users use products\/services far differently than the engineers\/designers, even when the user is an engineer\/designer.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes they can give you an \u201cah ha\u201d moment.\u00a0 Other times, new market opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>They often give you insight into product enhancements or tomorrow\u2019s hot, sexy big seller.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step three<\/strong> &#8212; apply the good experiments big time.\u00a0 For those that don\u2019t, remember what Edison said<em>, \u201cI have not failed.
