We naturally want to know if it is a good upgrade from AMD&#8217;s aging Phenom II architecture, and we have already compared its performance to our overclocked 980 Black Edition also on the AM3+ platform, and also to our overclocked Intel Core i7-920 on the LGA-1366 platform. <a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/UnlockedFXProcessorLogo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27355\" title=\"UnlockedFXProcessorLogo\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/UnlockedFXProcessorLogo.jpg?resize=150%2C128\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>This Part Two contains the conclusion to <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/amds-fx-8150-vs-core-i7-phenom-ii-bulldozer-arrives\">AMD\u2019s FX-8150 vs. Core i7 &amp; Phenom II \u2013 Bulldozer Arrives!<\/a> We concluded that FX-8150 once overclocked, was quite competitive with the overclocked to 4.3GHz Phenom II 980 BE but still fell a bit behind the Core i7-920 at 3.80GHz in gaming with a single HD 6970. Unfortunately, we were suspicious of our CrossFired HD 6970s low scaling results when compared to our other CPU platforms but we didn&#8217;t have time to test any further and so were not able to give an overall conclusion about the FX-8150&#8217;s ability as a gaming CPU.<\/p>\n<p>This time, we received our ASUS CrossHair V replacement motherboard, and there were no issues whatsoever &#8211; even using hot-running HD 6970-X3 (880\/1375MHz) Tri-Fire and FX-8150 overclocked to 4.4GHz with multiple power supply units (PSUs). This motherboard is amazing. It is an overclocker&#8217;s dream and we found excellent features and great stability. Best of all, this AM3+ platform also supports 16x+16x PCIe bandwidth for multi-GPU CrossFire or SLI. We soon hope to bring you GTX 580 SLI and HD 6970-X4 Quad-Fire results!<\/p>\n<p>We soon discovered that the FX-8150 has two personalities &#8211; much like the HD 6990. At its stock speeds of 3.6GHz, it is mild-mannered and uses power at a reasonable draw but its performance is somewhat muted &#8211; even compared to Phenom II architecture. And when overclocked, its performance increases sharply but at the cost of high power draw and heat. Unfortunately, we only compared our stock FX-8150 to the overclocked-to-4.3GHz Phenom II without looking at the older CPU&#8217;s performance at its stock speed of 3.7GHz.<\/p>\n<p>The shortness of time for the evaluation was our main issue and the stock FX-8150 looked good against the overclocked Phenom II on paper as Turbo Core will extend the FX-8150&#8217;s core speed to 4.2GHz. As it turns out, we were over-optimistic about Turbo Core performance gains in gaming. First, let&#8217;s again look at what it does.<\/p>\n<h3>Turbo Core<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/maxturbo1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"maxturbo\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/maxturbo1.jpg?resize=550%2C365\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One impressive new feature that appears to work well in practice for some applications is AMD&#8217;s Turbo Core technology. It is far more sophisticated than similar technology used in their 6-core Phenom IIs. It allows for the FX-8150 to increase from 3.6GHz to 3.9GHz across all eight cores, and a further double-boost on 4 cores to 4.2GHz if TDP headroom allows it. Generally the boost effect can range from instantaneous to over a longer period, depending on the thermal situation as shown in the chart below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/turbo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"turbo\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/turbo.jpg?resize=500%2C185\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, this could give some significant performance improvements as AMD&#8217;s internal testing shows. However, notice that not one game is given as an example of Turbo Core technology providing gains.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Turbocore1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Turbocore\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Turbocore1.jpg?resize=500%2C228\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In our own further testing, an issue that we discovered in gaming is that the FX-8150 actually rarely boosts to 3.9GHz for long periods &#8211; nevermind to 4.2GHz &#8211; probably because of the lack of thermal headroom with our CPU air-cooling solution. So when we compare our FX-8150 to Core i7-920 at 3.8GHz and Phenom II 980 BE at 4.3GHz, we are comparing them to a stock FX CPU that is mostly running at 3.6GHz in gaming. This was also evidently an issue with our FX-8150 CrossFire scaling compared to the other overclocked CPUs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cooling and Power Draw<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We used the older but still-decent CPU cooling technology, Thermalright Ultra120 Extreme with a single Scythe 12omm cooling fan to cool our FX-8150. For this part two, we added a second 140mm fan in push-pull to the CPU cooler to give us a few degrees more of cooling headroom. However, in reaching our 4.4GHz overclock, power usage and heat went way up and we were very glad we switched from our relatively cramped Cooler Master Elite 430 mid-tower case in Part 1, to our spacious new Thermaltake full-tower Chaser Mk I which we will evaluate separately.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/www.thermaltakeusa.com\/ProductHtml\/image\/VN300M1W2N\/Computer_Case_Chaser_View2.jpg\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/www.thermaltakeusa.com\/ProductHtml\/image\/VN300M1W2N\/Computer_Case_Chaser_View2.jpg?resize=356%2C356', '']);\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/www.thermaltakeusa.com\/ProductHtml\/image\/VN300M1W2N\/Computer_Case_Chaser_View2.jpg?resize=356%2C356\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In fact, to make our FX-8150&#8217;s overclock completely stable with overclocked HD 6970-X3 Tri-Fire, we had to switch from using two 775W PSUs together, to using a 850W PSU together with a 775W unit! The 775W PSU is dedicated to powering the PCIe cables to the HD 6990 and the HD 6970 in CrossFire while the 850W unit supplies power to the PC including the overclocked FX-8150, the case fans, optical drive, HDD and to the two PCIe slots (75W each)!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/CF-X31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-27503\" title=\"CF-X3\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/CF-X31.jpg?resize=300%2C290\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/CF-X31.jpg?resize=300%2C290 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/CF-X31-1024x989.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/CF-X31.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>We can hardly wait for gaming in Winter with HD 6970 Quad-Fire and water-cooled FX-8150 &#8211; there will be no need for a space heater. To run Quad-Fire, there would be another HD 6970 sandwiched in-between the HD 6990 on top and the HD 6950-flashed-to-6970 on the bottom. Water-cooling is probably necessary in this kind of situation as the heat from the four GPUs rises straight up to the CPU &#8211; even in a superbly ventilated case like the Thermaltake Chaser Mk I.<\/p>\n<p>We already introduced the new FX Bulldozer architecture <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/amds-fx-8150-vs-core-i7-phenom-ii-bulldozer-arrives\/2\">here<\/a>. We apologize for the state of some of the images and the general lack of time that we had in writing our evaluation due to hardware issues. However, we want you to know that ABT is a primarily a game-oriented tech site and we intend to highlight and emphasize performance in at least 20 modern games by using resolutions and maximum detail settings that gamers actually play at. Instead of returning to non-gaming tests, we are going to carry on with further important tests to determine if the FX-8150 is a decent gaming CPU or not.<\/p>\n<p>We ran synthetic and real world benchmarks on our stock-clocked and overclocked FX-8150 with the overclocked Core i7-920 taking most of them and the overclocked Phenom II and FX CPUs fighting it out for second place. Since our main emphasis will always be on gaming performance, we will continue to spend our time working to establish FX-8150&#8217;s performance in games when paired with a single HD 6970 and also with HD 6970 CrossFire-X2.<\/p>\n<p>Since we had questions about CrossFire scaling with our stock FX-8150, we took it a step further and ran HD 6970-X3 Tri-Fire to see if this CPU has what it takes with relatively high-end graphics. And we also tested with the FX-8150 at the stock 3.6GHz with Turbo Core on and also at 4.4GHz with Turbo off. In this way, we will see if the FX-8150 is worth the $245 that AMD is asking for it for gaming.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/8150box.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27366\" title=\"8150box\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/8150box.jpg?resize=360%2C379\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/8150box.jpg?resize=360%2C379 450w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/8150box-284x300.jpg 284w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>We noticed that AMD positioned FX 8150 against Intel&#8217;s enthusiast CPU line-up and directly against the upper-midrange Core i5-2500K. Considering that AMD is introducing their new flagship processor at $245, we can expect that its performance should be between the i5-2500K and i7-2600K.<\/p>\n<p>We want to note that we did not test with Core i5-2500K. Instead, we used an overclocked-to-3.8GHz i7-920 which is solidly faster than Intel&#8217;s current fastest quad-core on the flagship LGA 1336 Platform &#8211; Core i7-960 at 3.2GHz. Our CPU would be comparable in performance at least to a stock i5-2500K in gaming &#8211; exactly where it is positioned against the FX-8150.<\/p>\n<p>Here is how AMD visualizes their line-up. Although they say it is not indicative of performance positioning, it generally is. We finally get to see what happens with CrossFire scaling when we overclock our FX-8150 to 4.4GHz.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:Game Performance Charts &#038; Graphs--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>FX-8150 <\/strong>Performance in 20 games<\/h2>\n<p>Here are the summary charts of our 20 games and 3 synthetic tests. CPU core speeds are shown in GHz. All results except for Vantage and 3DMark11 show average framerates and higher is always better. In-game settings are fully maxed-out and they are identical across all platforms except for <em>Left 4 Dead<\/em> where the Intel CPU uses a slightly different benchmark from the AMD CPUs (Steam updated the game during the testing).<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>We remember stating that CrossFire Scaling was so bad on the stock-clocked FX-8150 that we were inclined to suspect driver issues instead of the CPU hitting any &#8220;wall&#8221; as some other sites have suggested. And indeed, we see even with the overclocked FX-8150 where clearly scaling has returned, there are some definite issues with CrossFire-X2 and especially Tri-Fire-X3 in some games.<\/p>\n<p>However, we start to see a normalcy return to CrossFire scaling as we increase the core speed of our FX-8150 from 3.6GHz to 4.4GHz and it again generally surpasses the 4.3GHz Phenom II just as it did with HD 6970. For FX-8150 to become really competitive with very fast graphics, it really needs to be overclocked to shine &#8211; especially in CPU performance-limited games.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Summary Charts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We are repeating the charts from Part One with the addition of HD 6990 overclocked to HD 6970 CrossFire performance and speeds. Note that in most cases, the difference between overclocked HD 6990 and HD 6970 CrossFire performance is within the margin of error; any other differences can be attributed to drivers and\/or possibly different vRAM timings. And now we are testing our HD 6990 with our FX-8150 at 3.6GHz and at 4.4GHz. In addition, we added a third GPU for 3 x HD 6970-X3 Tri-Fire performance to see if we could still get further scaling with the third GPU at stock FX-8150 speeds and what effect overclocking it a further +800MHz does for performance<\/p>\n<p>These charts are getting pretty wide, so it is suggested that you click on them and open them in another window or tab. First up is the HD 6970 with our CPU platforms in two long halves of a chart:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/6970-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27508\" title=\"6970-1\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/6970-1.jpg?resize=482%2C2706\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/6970-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27509\" title=\"6970-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/6970-2.jpg?resize=482%2C2504\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/6970-2.jpg?resize=482%2C2504 482w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/6970-2-197x1024.jpg 197w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We see the FX-8150 generally does quite well in gaming with a powerful single-GPU video card. There is generally not a lot of difference between our stock clocked and our overclocked FX-8150 with a single HD 6970. And now we look at the graphs of HD 6970-X2 CrossFire which is generally equal in performance to our HD 6990 at 880\/1375MHz.<\/p>\n<p>We run CrossFire-X2 and X3 with our FX-8150 both at stock clocks and at 4.4GHz. Note the HD 6970-X3 Tri-Fire scaling results with both the stock and overclocked FX-8150 over the X2 configuration. It now makes quite a difference to overclock the FX-8150!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/6990x2-3-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27507\" title=\"6990x2-3-1\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/6990x2-3-1.jpg?resize=482%2C3204\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/6990x2-3-1.jpg?resize=482%2C3204 482w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/6990x2-3-1-45x300.jpg 45w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/6990x2-3-1-154x1024.jpg 154w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/6990x2-31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27510\" title=\"6990x2-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/6990x2-31.jpg?resize=482%2C2804\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/6990x2-31.jpg?resize=482%2C2804 482w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/6990x2-31-176x1024.jpg 176w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/introducing-the-new-phenom-ii-980-be-vs-core-i7-920-value-meets-performance-again\">we have seen before,<\/a> it requires overclocking the Phenom II 980 BE to approximately 4.3GHz to match the Intel i7-920 at 3.8GHz (with Intel&#8217;s Turbo Boost on to 4.0GHz on a single core) in relatively high-end gaming. And the FX-8150 at stock 3.6GHz (with Turbo Core rarely turning on in gaming) generally does well in most of the benches, winning the most of any platform for the single-GPU HD 6970. And overclocking it further to 4.4GHz makes it the clear winner in most cases. However, the picture changes dramatically with CrossFire scaling and the AM3+ platform with the FX-8150 at stock clocks.<\/p>\n<p>Besides poor scaling at stock with FX-8150, we also see some issues with drivers and especially CrossFire-X3 scaling. However, in the games that do scale, it usually makes a notable performance difference to overclock the FX-8150. We see that the architecture is sufficient to scale to match increasing faster graphics up to HD 6970-X3 TriFire.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, we want to explore this further with HD 6970-X4 Quad-Fire scaling and a further overclock of our FX-8150 as we water-cool it hopefully to beyond 4.6GHz. Expect further evaluations featuring the FX-8150 and also GTX 580 and GTX 580 SLI in our upcoming <em>&#8220;CrossFire vs. SLI, Part 2 &#8211; High-End Multi-GPU Scaling&#8221;<\/em> which is the continuation of a <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/sli-vs-crossfire-part-2-high-end-multi-gpu-scaling\">series<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:Conclusion!--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Phenom II has reached its end of its useful life. There have been few changes to AMD&#8217;s basic architecture since about 2003. Bulldozer is the next iteration of AMD CPUs that are particularly useful for servers and have also been adopted for the desktop as the basis for AMD&#8217;s next generation CPUs that will probably be in use for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>Here is AMD&#8217;s now-public roadmap:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/AMD_roadmap.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"AMD_roadmap\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/AMD_roadmap.jpg?resize=500%2C283\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is clear to us that the Phenom II solution is nearing the end of it&#8217;s useful life as their quad-core flagship 980 BE overclocked to 4.3GHz <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/introducing-the-new-phenom-ii-980-be-vs-core-i7-920-value-meets-performance-again\">was barely able to hold its own in high-resolution gaming<\/a> against the three-year old Core i7-920 at 3.8GHz. We have seen AMD launch the FX-8150 at 3.6GHz, and at stock clocks &#8211; even with Turbo Core &#8211; it is fairly lackluster at gaming although it certainly holds its own against the overclocked Phenom II with a single HD 6970.<\/p>\n<p>However, once graphics as fast as CrossFired HD 6970s or overclocked HD 6990 are used, it almost becomes mandatory to overclock the FX-8150 to take advantage of all of the graphics power. And the issue is that the FX-8150 draws a lot of power and creates a lot of heat to reach overclocked speeds beyond 4.2GHz. If you are the enthusiast who doesn&#8217;t mind &#8211; perhaps someone who lives in a climate that is cooler rather than warmer &#8211; this is a capable CPU and it will hold its own against other competing architectures.<\/p>\n<p>Even perhaps with a lower individual IPC than with Phenom II, it now appears that AMD is again competitive in the midrange as the new bulldozer architecture is forward-looking and is something for them to build upon. They really need to get their clockspeed much higher and their TDP lower, and their roadmap indicates that they need 10 to 15% additional performance more each year just to remain competitive with Intel.<\/p>\n<p>AMD&#8217;s price of $245 still seems a bit optimistic as an i5-2500K can be got for less than that, but market pricing will come into play pretty soon. If you have an AM3+ motherboard and a slower Phenom II, you should consider the FX-8150 as a gaming CPU. And we have already seen its advantages in encoding and in newer applications that take advantage of its optimizations.<\/p>\n<p>We look forward to AMD&#8217;s new FX line and expect them to build upon it as the process matures and for them to reach far higher clockspeeds than they do today. We also expect that they will lower their TDP as the process matures so that eventually higher stable overclocks will not require water-cooling and large PSUs.<\/p>\n<p>We also will bring you much more about the FX-8150 performance in gaming as we test further with Nvidia&#8217;s GTX 580 SLI and AMD&#8217;s HD 6970-X4 Quad-Fire. And of course, we will set up water-cooling for our FX-8150 to see what future Bulldozer performance may bring.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, expect the latest GeForce WHQL driver performance analysis &#8211; including 3D Vision drivers; and Part 3 of CrossFire vs SLI.
