We&#8217;ve got to consider the pros and cons, make a list, and get advice.\u201d<\/em> <strong>\u2013 Frank Stark, <em>Rebel Without a Cause<\/em>, Warner Bros (1955) <\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Since the mainframe days, people have complained that IT was slow to respond, slow to deliver, over budget.<\/p>\n<p>Unisys\u2019 latest report that IT people are willing to ignore the consumerization of IT only reinforces this old saw.<\/p>\n<p>According to them, IT has its collective heads in the sand.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a lot more newsworthy than saying IT has a helluva\u2019 job on its hands giving company people on-the-go what they want and need <strong><em>and<\/em><\/strong> keeping the company jewels safe, secure!<\/p>\n<p>Sure, it reinforces all of the reasons folks have given for bringing in and using their own notebooks, smartphones, tablets.\u00a0 After all, work\/home life had blurred so they might as well use the device(s) they use to take care of business when they\u2019re home to take care of home stuff at work.<\/p>\n<p>Jim Stark looked at the new kids and said, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>You read too many comic books.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With the new-found tools\/power, they got creative developing little work-arounds so they could go into the information rich company databases and gather the information, find the answers that their customers and their bosses wanted\/needed.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, then you just <strong><em>have<\/em><\/strong> to flaunt your newly found power by making dazzling presentations for the boss on your tablet (iPad).<\/p>\n<p>As for the bosses, what kind of leader will they be if they don\u2019t have the latest, best?<\/p>\n<p>Right?<\/p>\n<p>The problem is how do you manage, implement and protect something that is changing right before your eyes.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Consumerization\u00a0 On Everyone\u2019s Mind<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Untitled-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27619\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Untitled-2.jpg?resize=454%2C345\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Untitled-2.jpg?resize=454%2C345 454w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Untitled-2-300x227.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Consumerization \u2013 <\/strong>Firms large and small have come to an uneasy truce with employees who want to use their own devices for business and home.\u00a0 Whether the company provides the device \u2013 notebook, smartphone, tablet \u2013 or reimburses the employee, the IT challenge goes beyond just \u201chookin\u2019 \u2018em up,\u201d it adds a whole new dimension to security.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8211; IDC<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>No Enterprise Support<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even though Jobs and his team tell everyone they didn\u2019t care about the enterprise, they are offering companies great volume buys.\u00a0 It\u2019s a good thing they\u2019re making the very best products for the consumer who is\u2026employed somewhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>You sly dawg you\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s probably why Apple\u2019s marketshare finally inched back up to 10 percent in the U.S. (still hovering around 5 percent in ROW).<\/p>\n<p>We didn\u2019t think much about it because we use our two devices \u2013 notebook and smartphone \u2013 for day-in, day-out business all the time.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0However, some of our folks are real power users so naturally they have a notebook, smartphone (iPhone), tablet (iPad).<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what happens when you hire folks who don\u2019t know what a typewriter or fax is.<\/p>\n<p>But at the recent Mobile Computing Summit, it was pretty obvious these folks knew what the rebels wanted as well as the jobs they had been hired to do\u2026protect, serve.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Device Support Emerging<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Untitled-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27618\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Untitled-3.jpg?resize=521%2C356\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Untitled-3.jpg?resize=521%2C356 521w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Untitled-3-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 521px) 100vw, 521px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Pick Your Priorities \u2013 <\/strong>Reduced staffs, expanded priority lists and a rainbow of operating systems\/devices has placed a heavy workload on IT teams&#8211;not just to deliver apps and applets, but to also ensure the enterprise\u2019s IP (intellectual property) is safe and secure.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8211; IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s really true\u2026mobility is the new computing platform.<\/p>\n<p>The way business is today, the idea of a work\/personal device has a lot of merit.<\/p>\n<p>Judy looked at her iPhone (she had named it) and said, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>I love you, Jim. I really mean it\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The challenge is we don\u2019t really trust either of the leading mobile OS (iOS, Android) stores.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Off \u00a0the Rack<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Somehow, buying a business-class app off the same rack you bought\/downloaded Angry Birds, the rest of your games and music just doesn\u2019t seem right.<\/p>\n<p>BYOD limits the visibility IT has into the mobile environment when users install their apps because \u201chey it\u2019s my device.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sure, Apple and Google check each app that\u2019s submitted to their stores, but how well do you really check 1,000s of apps a day?\u00a0 What are you really checking for\u2026salability?<\/p>\n<p>More importantly if the business app is available off-the-shelf to anyone with a PayPal account how private, secure is office data on your device?<\/p>\n<p>Of course there\u2019s nothing wrong with buying\/loading\/using casual things on the device (it\u2019s yours after all):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Social site links<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Entertainment<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Utilities<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Games<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lifestyle stuff<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>App Development Priorities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Untitled-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27617\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=518%2C295\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=518%2C295 518w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Untitled-4-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Platform Targets \u2013 <\/strong>Apple\u2019s devices are at the top of their lists for a lot of employees. I like you.\u00a0 You gotta do something.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But it ain\u2019t that simple.<\/p>\n<p>We can see the importance of developing apps\/mini-apps that help individuals and departments dig into, use and share a specific set of data from the company\u2019s deep, rich treasure trove of information; but it\u2019s a whole new set of skills.<\/p>\n<p>The support resources, the infrastructure for a mobile environment is pretty different from what you previously had \u201cin house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>IT\/app development teams have to:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Support multiple mobile OSes, multiple carrier implementations<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Integrate mobile device management with current PC\/server tools<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Protect data in-the-air that is being sent between the mobile device\/server<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ensure that since you\u2019re dealing with a set of standardized, rich, native APIs (application programming interface) develop strong anti-malware solutions and constantly test them<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Understand that users can and will install apps IT will need to support<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lots of Responsibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>IT has a lot less control and a whole lot more responsibility in the consumerized<\/p>\n<p>world:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Devices, platforms, apps are usually dictated by the boss or department head(s)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 BYOD limits IT\u2019s visibility into the mobile environment<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Deployment\/enhancement control is with the SW\/HW provider, carrier \u2013 OS upgrades, patches<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Multiple platforms mean multiple app development projects<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Users have high expectations that everything in \u201ctheir company\u2019s system\u201d will be as flexible, easy-to-use as Steve said it would be<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Users can \u2013 and will \u2013 bypass IT\u2019s mobile security controls using cloud, sync services and attach other stuff to the company\u2019s infrastructure<\/p>\n<p>Jim Stark looked at the changes and lamented, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>I don&#8217;t know what to do anymore.
