You learn to take life as it comes at you&#8230; to make each day count.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 <strong>\u2013 Jack, Titanic, 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century-Fox (1997)<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Last year, more than four billion devices connected to the Internet shoved more data across the pipes than was sent from the Net\u2019s beginnings in the late \u201860s through 2009 \u2026 combined.<\/p>\n<p>Industry experts estimate that it won\u2019t be long before 15 billion devices will be connected to the Net; and by 2020, something like 50 billion devices will be \u201ccommunicating\u201d across the Net.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s more than six devices for every person on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to what a lot of folks mesmerized by the glare of the oncoming headlights, they won\u2019t all be iPads!<\/p>\n<p>Most of us only use three or four connected devices \u2013 smartphone, tablet, TV, computer.<\/p>\n<p>The big chunk of the connected\/communicating devices will be parts of sensor networks &#8212; low-power sensors that collect, transmit, analyze and distribute data on a massive scale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Big Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the device, if you run the numbers on the volumes of data that are going to be sent then\u2026it\u2019s <strong><em>HUGE!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em>The Digital Universe 2009 &#8211; 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27942\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-21.jpg?resize=505%2C314\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-21.jpg?resize=505%2C314 505w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-21-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 505px) 100vw, 505px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Coming of Age \u2013 <\/strong>The Internet, the Web, social media and mobile devices have put content and content development into everyone\u2019s hands; and boy, are they taking advantage of it by developing and distributing more data than ever. \u00a0Last year, there was more data produced and distributed than in the previous 30 years\u2026combined.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just think; back in 2008, only five Exabytes of unique information were created. \u00a0That&#8217;s about one billion DVDs.<\/p>\n<p>This year, we\u2019re creating a staggering 1.2 Zettabytes (one Zettabyte equals 1,024 Exabytes). \u00a0Yeah it\u2019s a big number\u2026really big number equal to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Every person in the United States tweeting 3 tweets per minute for 26,976 years nonstop<\/li>\n<li>Every person in the world having over 215 million high-resolution MRI scans per day<\/li>\n<li>Over 200 billion HD movies (each 2 hours in length)\u2014would take 1 person 47 million years to watch every movie 24&#215;7<\/li>\n<li>The amount of information needed to fill 57.5 billion 32GB Apple iPads or Amazon Kindle Fires \u2013 the two \u201chot\u201d tablets right now. With that many iPads\/Fires we could:<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a wall of devices, 4,005-miles long and 61-feet high extending from Anchorage, Alaska to Miami, Florida.<\/li>\n<li>Build the Great device Wall of China\u2014at twice the average height of the original<\/li>\n<li>Build a 20-foot high wall around South America<\/li>\n<li>Cover 86% of Mexico City<\/li>\n<li>Build a mountain 25-times higher than Mt. Fuji<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Old Rose looked at all the numbers and said, \u201c<em>\u201cIt was the ship of dreams to everyone else. Inside, I was screaming.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Social Headache<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Part of the problem is that social networking and personal devices have invaded the corporation.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Social Networking Invades the Enterprise<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27943\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-3.jpg?resize=274%2C257\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Socializing \u2013 <\/strong>Social media didn\u2019t just take over our home lives; it quickly spread across businesses as companies moved aggressively to monetize the opportunities and their presence.\u00a0 It also opened the doors, windows and cracks to enable everyone in the organization to become a social media specialist.\u00a0 All of this happened, and more than half of the firms have no social media guidelines or don\u2019t think they do.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As a result, IT people and data centers are being dragged into untested waters of worrying about and protecting not only the company\u2019s data, but also often having to manage, save user-generated content.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>User Creation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27944\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=475%2C271\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=475%2C271 475w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-4-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u00a0BYOD Headaches \u2013 <\/strong>When the boss says he wants to use his personal smartphone or iPad for his business activities, IT looked at the challenge with a lot of concern.\u00a0\u00a0 Soon everyone in the organization wanted BYOD (bring your own device) and that meant IT had to not only support them but also protect the data that accompanied them.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The comingling of content is one of IT\u2019s biggest headaches because suddenly they are \u201cresponsible\u201d for stuff they didn\u2019t want and can\u2019t use but a security breach in any of the data touchpoints can have an impact on everything else they\u2019re responsible for.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27945\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=454%2C330\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=454%2C330 454w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-5-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 5 \u2013 Waiting to be Had \u2013 <\/strong>The challenge for IT is to evaluate what level(s) of information security they need to apply to the various data and content they have in their storage areas.\u00a0 Some requires stringent protection, while other data only needs \u201ckinda\u2019 nice\u201d protection.\u00a0 Even then, a breach in any of the areas provides opportunities for malware and hacking of the more critical data.\u00a0 It\u2019s all a matter of priorities.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The new solution that all the big (and small) players are saying will save us from the zettaflood is \u2026 the Cloud.<\/p>\n<p>Cisco, EMC, IDC and others project that in the coming years as much as one-third of all data will live in or pass through the Cloud.<\/p>\n<p>Cloud services &#8212; everyone today uses cloud storage.\u00a0\u00a0 You post all of your most personal\/private information on Facebook for them to monetize\/share.\u00a0 You post photos on Flickr.\u00a0 You post videos on YouTube.\u00a0 Companies send\/receive to encrypted files through private and public clouds.\u00a0 Some stays for a long time, some for a millisecond; but regardless, it\u2019s long enough for bad guys\/gals to do their damage.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Like it or not, feel it is safe\/secure or not; we all use the cloud daily posting our life\/soul on Zuck\u2019s Facebook, uploading photos to\/through Flickr, sharing\/watching videos\/movies on YouTube (48 hours of video uploaded every minute) and other entertainment outlets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cloudy Solution<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, you and we both know that the Cloud isn\u2019t just a crisp, beautiful, constantly expanding storage space \u2026 right?<\/p>\n<p>As Rose said, <em>\u201cThe sky. It&#8217;s so vast and endless.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She didn\u2019t understand that all of that data and content comes to earth to sit waiting for you in expansive storage farms that house tens of thousands of hard drives, solid-state devices, tapes, optical discs.<\/p>\n<p>Which device the content\/data sits on depends on how quickly it\u2019s needed, how often it\u2019s needed, if it\u2019s needed.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that the majority of human knowledge and creation is solely digital concerns a lot of IT experts and academics.\u00a0 There are countless times where disaster or war have destroyed priceless works of human knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wikipedia, the amount of data that exists today is about 98 times what existed in 1986.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Growth of Unprotected Data<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27947\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-7.jpg?resize=528%2C296\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-7.jpg?resize=528%2C296 528w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-7-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 7 \u2013 Naked Data \u2013 <\/strong>Much like Moore\u2019s Law, when the number of transistors double every two years on an IC, data is similarly doubling; but more than half of it is naked to the world with little to no protection.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>IDC has pointed out that in the coming years, more than half of the data will be unprotected; which could be why Zuck\u2019s Facebook keeps eight pages of all of your content\u2026to protect you!<\/p>\n<p>Facebook\u2019s assistance aside, we continue our pursuit to digitize everything, not even realizing we don\u2019t have a way to protect and recover that content.<\/p>\n<p>Old Rose put it best, <em>\u201cHe exists now&#8230; only in my memory.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Our kids don\u2019t worry about it though because they know they\u2019ve got all the solid-state storage capacity they need on their smartphones and iPads.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solid Boost<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And to goose up the capacity\/performance\/battery life of her Macbook Air our daughter just added one of Other World Computing\u2019s 240GB SSD drives.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, it isn\u2019t the 1TB capacity she would like; which meet only a portion of our growing storage requirements.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 Combined Industry Reports<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like so many \u2013 especially the chip manufacturers \u2013 she\u2019d like to see solid-state storage everywhere; but there is that little issue of production capacities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27949\" title=\"Untitled-9\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-9.jpg?resize=470%2C315\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-9.jpg?resize=470%2C315 470w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Untitled-9-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 9 \u2013 Most Storage Spins \u2013 <\/strong>Despite the many benefits of solid-state storage, most of the growing volume of data and content resides on hard drive devices because of their growing storage potential and steadily decreasing cost per GB of storage.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 Gartner<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The growth of the digital universe continues to outpace the growth of storage capacity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here \u2018n Gone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The good thing is that while a Gigabyte of stored content generates a Petabyte or more of transient data, it only exists for fleeting moments \u2013 digital TV signals, phone calls, etc.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, we\u2019re producing 75X the number of files or containers that encapsulate the information in the digital universe.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The industry has done a tremendous job at lowering the cost of storing data.
