but you have to admit they \u201cenhanced\u201d the idea by cutting your search time in half.\u00a0 Then one of their engineers had to correct biz development by saying we\u2019re really separated by 4.74 people.<\/p>\n<p>Come on folks, the world population just streaked past seven billion\u2026so of course we\u2019re closer together!<\/p>\n<p>But we prefer Mitch Joel\u2019s world-shrinking approach&#8211;today we\u2019ve only got six pixels of separation.\u00a0 He probably knows better but after writing his book <strong><em>Six Pixels of Separation <\/em><\/strong>and doing a blog and podcast by the same title, he takes a more creative approach to our growing connections.<\/p>\n<p>Joel is trying to interpret what\u2019s going on in the interconnected world while Adam and his engineer are just collecting, selling the connections.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Close Enough<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They both know we are constantly sharing content online in more ways and are using more platforms to share more stuff with more groups of people who share it \u2013 good news, bad news, stuff \u2013 with more people.<\/p>\n<p>Gigi looked at the potential and said, <em>\u201cI like a little time before a blind date; prepare myself mentally.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no wonder that Cisco projected that in five years, 90 percent of the stuff flying across the Net will be content.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s almost a beautiful thing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28249\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-22.jpg?resize=228%2C194\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Closer \u2018n Closer <em>\u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>The growth of the social network has destroyed corporate silos and helped produce greater transparency and trust inside and outside the organization.\u00a0 By empowering and enabling people, relationships have become closer for employees and consumers.\u00a0 Social business will continue to grow for every segment of the marketplace<\/em>.\u00a0 <strong>Image &#8211; Nielsen<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We already have a generation that never knew life before being online; and the next generation (kids under 11) won\u2019t think twice about what they\u2019re sharing, who they\u2019re sharing with.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll probably be like Ben and say to every contact, <em>\u201cYou may be the best friend I&#8217;ve ever had.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kids Connect, Share<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By 2014, eMarketer estimates there will be more than nearly 25 million kids in this category or 47.8 percent of the young population.<\/p>\n<p>They won\u2019t be sedentary either because more than 70 percent of today\u2019s parents have kids under age six who watch their folks find stores, local information, activities, stuff using mobile internet access.<\/p>\n<p>Works for mom and dad, so it should work for them just as well.<\/p>\n<p>None of them \u2013 parents, kids, you \u2013 thinks twice about the fact that getting that information costs you\u2026(wait for it)\u2026your information.<\/p>\n<p>As Beth commented, <em>\u201cI thought that guy was a process server.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that you can\u2019t turn around without bumping into a bunch of social media experts, very few organizations understand what all the user information means, how valuable it is, how to use it to help people get the most from their connections.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is these social marketing experts are trying to use dry, abstract, mechanical types of measurement tools to pigeonhole individuals and groups.<\/p>\n<p>The approach usually fails because people aren\u2019t assembly lines and even in large groups can\u2019t be tuned to a pre-established standard.<\/p>\n<p>Try as scientists and mathematicians will, there isn\u2019t a universal standard for human experience, action, reaction.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, our experts give lip-service to 1:1 relationships then use modified old marketing measures to determine the value of social media to the company.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-5a1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28258\" title=\"Untitled-5a\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-5a1.jpg?resize=528%2C363\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-5a1.jpg?resize=528%2C363 528w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-5a1-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Social Marketing \u2013 <\/strong><em>While marketing struggles to develop methods of showing the return on investment of social media marketing, it has not slowed down organizational efforts to conduct activities that bring them closer to the customer and strengthen the relationship<\/em>.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8211; ForeSee<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>True, lawmakers don\u2019t understand either why online organizations like Google, Facebook, Amazon, Yahoo, Apple, others can\u2019t simply <strong><em>BAM!!<\/em><\/strong> get you just the right information you want when you need it, before you even ask.<\/p>\n<p>But clearly understanding what they are doing has never been a requirement for the job.<\/p>\n<p>Gigi simply said, <em>\u201cI would rather be like that, than be like you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tough Protection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Protecting your privacy sounds better than sharing information to get information.<\/p>\n<p>Privacy continues to be a time bomb; and there have been a ton of data breaches \u2013 really big ones \u2013 over the past year.\u00a0 \u00a0However, most of them have been caused by users themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Being careless, lazy, dumb is so hard to regulate.<\/p>\n<p>While a lot of business employees believe that social media usage could damage their firm\u2019s reputation \u2013 50 percent according to a Deloitte Ethics &amp; Workplace Survey \u2013 small businesses have done a better job of getting involved with the online communities.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Digital Social Media Activities of Small Businesses<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-62.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28253\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-62.jpg?resize=328%2C255\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-62.jpg?resize=328%2C255 328w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-62-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 328px) 100vw, 328px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Digital Business \u2013 <\/strong><em>Perhaps because of the limited financial resources, small businesses have more rapidly begun experimenting with and using social media activities to network with others and provide customer support\/service.\u00a0 Over the holidays, social activities enabled them to compete with larger businesses on an equal basis<\/em>.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 Sage Research<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While the small businesses don\u2019t get the credit they deserve, more organizations are paying attention to the success NHL (National Hockey League) franchises had as players became more connected to their fans.<\/p>\n<p>The first people to take notice were players in other sports who put all of the social media tools to work for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Despite more than a few widely covered stumbles, people have kept their image and fan base&#8211;even when they earnestly admitted their shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p>Small businesses and larger companies have seen their relationships expand when all of the social media relationship tools were used.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Email Subscribers, Facebook Fans and Twitter Followers<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-72.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-28254\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-72.jpg?resize=366%2C287\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-72.jpg?resize=366%2C287 366w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-72-300x235.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 366px) 100vw, 366px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Marketing Mix \u2013 <\/strong><em>Depending upon which social media tool\/activity you are most comfortable with, it becomes the one many employees feel is the clear winner.\u00a0 The truth is that all of the social media activities build on each other and produce better overall results because no one uses just one social service<\/em>.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8211; ExactTarget<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Marketers recognize the need for and potential of social media; but you have to admit, it\u2019s still tough to develop scenarios that spread and deepen the social media user engagement to increase profitability.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Job #1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The key is to have everyone in the organization understand that goal and be involved.<\/p>\n<p>Marketing needs to help every member of the team understand that part of everyone\u2019s job is to develop better\/more leads, develop\/assist customers and constantly monitor the company\u2019s brand.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-82.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28255\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-82.jpg?resize=337%2C191\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-82.jpg?resize=337%2C191 337w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-82-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 337px) 100vw, 337px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Big Social Event \u2013 <\/strong><em>At Facebook\u2019s developer conference, F8, Zuck told attendees how the company was expanding in almost every area to produce a robust marketplace that could be easily followed and mined.\u00a0\u00a0 Unfortunately, he had to lower his sights when the US and EU trade organizations \u201cadjusted\u201d their opt in\/opt out policies<\/em>.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8211; Facebook<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Think about it, three billion folks out there have phones, about a billion have computers, and tens of millions have tablets.\u00a0 And yes, Zuck has about 800 million members, Twitter has a couple of hundred million, the rest of the social media locations have their share.<\/p>\n<p>Companies don\u2019t want them all \u2013 O.K. it would be nice but\u2026 &#8212; they simply want to come up with a measure of their organization\u2019s return on investment for their social media activities.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the presence and popularity of social media, it\u2019s still extremely difficult for management to understand the depth and breadth of its pundits, practices, principles.\u00a0 What they do know is that word-of-mouth marketing is a tremendous opportunity for their company, their brand.<\/p>\n<p>But Alex warned them, <em>\u201cWell, yeah, okay, don&#8217;t start doodling my name on your binder, okay.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-92.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28256\" title=\"Untitled-9\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-92.jpg?resize=399%2C266\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-92.jpg?resize=399%2C266 399w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Untitled-92-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Fully Connected \u2013 <\/strong><em>People have become so connected to the people, activities in the virtual world that they check their social media contacts constantly.\u00a0 Many aren\u2019t even out of bed in the morning and they are online.\u00a0 Others interrupt other activities to stay in touch with \u201cothers.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 <strong>Image \u2013 Warner Bros<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The great thing is people are sharing more information, content socially.\u00a0 All we have to do is interact with them without interrupting other social activities.<\/p>\n<p>But then Alex whispered, <em>\u201cYou are *my* exception.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"># # #<\/p>\n<p><strong>by: G.A. &#8220;Andy&#8221;
