The other popular competing technology that 3D Vision uses is active stereo technology, which runs at 120Hz and uses alternating frames for Left Eye-Right Eye separation. One advantage of the active technology is that the user gets to see the entire 1080p resolution in each eye at 60Hz.\u00a0 The advantage of the polarized solution is that the initial hardware price is lower, and if extra glasses are needed for a large family or classroom environment they will cost nearly nothing.<\/p>\n<p>There are some definite differences between the two kinds of Stereoscopic 3D (S3D) that we shall explore as we compare our 3D Vision ready 120Hz ASUS display which uses active shutter glasses that costs $428.99 with a $30 mail-in-rebate at both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236092\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236092', 'Newegg']);\" >Newegg<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/VG236H-23-Inch-Monitor-nVidia-Vision\/dp\/B003V4AK2K\/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/VG236H-23-Inch-Monitor-nVidia-Vision\/dp\/B003V4AK2K\/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top', 'Amazon']);\" >Amazon<\/a> versus the ViewSonic passive 3D 60Hz display costing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/ViewSonic-V3D231-Viewsonic-23-Inch-Monitor\/dp\/B005LFQVUC\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/ViewSonic-V3D231-Viewsonic-23-Inch-Monitor\/dp\/B005LFQVUC', '$284.56 at Amazon.com']);\" >$284.56 at Amazon.com<\/a> and even less at other etailers.\u00a0 The ASUS 3D Vision bundle is more than $115 more expensive than the ViewSonic bundle and the displays share the same 1080P.\u00a0 What are the differences?<\/p>\n<p>The differences between the ViewSonic display and the ASUS display are more than superficial.\u00a0 The ASUS display is a 120Hz panel that uses an emitter and expensive ($100-$150 per pair) active shutter glasses to give a 3D effect and the image is relatively dark compared to viewing in 2D.\u00a0 In contrast, the ViewSonic display uses a fast 60Hz panel that has a special coating and a polarized film to produce the 3D effect and the much lighter and cheaper glasses do not darken the scene as dramatically as the active shutter method.\u00a0 However, there are resolution and other trade-offs with the passive method that we shall cover in this evaluation with a head-to-head comparison between &#8216;passive&#8217; and &#8216;active&#8217; Stereoscopic 3D (S3D).<\/p>\n<p>Here are the V3D231&#8217;s specifications from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.viewsonic.com\/products\/v3d231.htm\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.viewsonic.com\/products\/v3d231.htm', 'ViewSonic web site:']);\" >ViewSonic web site:<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Official Specs:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>23&#8243; Wide 3D-Ready LED monitor with 2ms response time for 3D gaming and crystal clear video experience. The display only has a rather stiff pivot which moves in only one direction and there is no vertical height adjustment.\u00a0 The base snaps on relatively easily but is difficult to remove.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/baseoverlock.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-28587\" title=\"baseoverlock\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/baseoverlock.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/baseoverlock.jpg?resize=300%2C225 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/baseoverlock.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To remove it, a screwdriver is needed to push down on the locking mechanism while simultaneously pulling up on the monitor to separate them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/baseinst.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-28588\" title=\"baseinst\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/baseinst.jpg?resize=300%2C192\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/baseinst.jpg?resize=300%2C192 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/baseinst.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>One of the best things that we personally liked about this display is the ease of connecting to it.\u00a0 One does not have to bend down or reach under to connect &#8211; you just plug directly into the panel.\u00a0 The only disadvantage is that the cables then stick straight out from the display at 90 degrees to the panel.\u00a0 This is no issue if the display is on its stand but the cables may stick out with other kinds of mounting.\u00a0 The following diagram shows the 3D connections that are possible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/3D-connect.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28592\" title=\"3D-connect\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/3D-connect.jpg?resize=300%2C296\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Connections are basic, using DVI, VGA, HDMI 1.4a, Audio In and Audio Out ports.<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The ViewSonic bundle includes two pairs of passive lenses &#8211; the full glasses and the clip ons.\u00a0 Since we generally wear prescription glasses, we used the clip-ons.\u00a0 They are quite cheaply made and we had to fix the clips several times over the course of our 2 month evaluation.\u00a0 For a comparison, the Nvidia 3D Vision 2 glasses are shown in the upper right of the photo below, and the original active shutter 3D Vision glasses are at the bottom right.\u00a0 Cheap and almost throwaway for &#8216;passive&#8217; Passive 3D Gaming--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Testing the Display and Passive 3D<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We set up the ViewSonic V3D231 directly next to our ASUS VG236 120Hz 3D Vision ready display that we got from Nvidia for our original 3D Vision review.\u00a0 Although the ASUS bundle is much expensive because of the panel being a true 120Hz display and the much higher costs of the included 3D Vision glasses, it is the best comparison we can make for 3D.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/VS-A-white.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-28599\" title=\"VS-A-white\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/VS-A-white.jpg?resize=480%2C152\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/VS-A-white.jpg?resize=480%2C152 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/VS-A-white-300x94.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>As you can see from our side by side comparison, the ASUS display on the right is much brighter and is more accurately &#8220;white&#8221; as even shown by our digital camera.\u00a0 The color temperature of the ViewSonic V3D231 is too warm which leaves a blue tinge and gamma is too low.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not a monitor that is ideal for print work as the grayscale quality is only fair.\u00a0 Viewing angles are limited as with all TN panels and although the color balance of the ViewSonic display can never be adjusted perfectly, it is still very decent as a gaming or general-purpose display.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Response Time<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At first we were quite puzzled as the 2ms specification for the response time seemed to be exaggerated as the V3D231 didn&#8217;t seem much faster than an ordinary display and dragging a FireFox window showed it was definitely no 120Hz monitor.\u00a0 However, we soon found a setting in the OSD (On Screen Display) menu that changed our minds about using this display for gaming.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ultrafast.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-28600\" title=\"ultrafast\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ultrafast.jpg?resize=300%2C293\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ultrafast.jpg?resize=300%2C293 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ultrafast.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>There is a noticeable difference in gaming with the response time set to Ultra Fast.\u00a0 Although the response time improved and tracing was nearly eliminated, the ViewSonic was still unable to keep up with the 120Hz panel of the more expensive ASUS display.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/trace.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-28601\" title=\"trace\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/trace.jpg?resize=600%2C184\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/trace.jpg?resize=600%2C184 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/trace-300x92.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Our digital camera is unable to capture the differences in a still shot.\u00a0 Both panels are excellent with no stuck no dead pixels and the particular ASUS display we used actually has a bit more backlight bleed.\u00a0 Both panels have excellent characteristics as gaming displays.<\/p>\n<p>Both displays are very good for gaming but we would have to give the overall edge to the more expensive 120Hz panel for its better colors and more trace free images using fast-paced shooters in 2D.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s now compare the ViewSonic&#8217;s passive polarized S3D versus 3D Vision.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: Passive Polarized vs. Active Shutter--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Passive S3D vs. active shutter 3D Vision<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The ASUS display is brighter out of the box compared to the ViewSonic display because it needs to compensate for the active shutter glasses dimming the screen&#8217;s image with 3D Vision.\u00a0 When actually comparing 3D across the two platforms, the passive polarized glasses with a less bright screen still delivers a brighter image than even the greatly improved 3D Vision 2.\u00a0 However, there are some things that the prospective buyer needs to know about Passive 3D before declaring it the &#8220;winner&#8221; versus the active-shutter 3D Vision.<\/p>\n<p>We are comparing the passive 3D that ViewSonic uses for the 60Hz V3D231 display to Nvidia&#8217;s more expensive active shutter glasses with the 120Hz ASUS VG236H.\u00a0 The ViewSonic V3D231 is a 60Hz passive \u2018FPR\u2019 display, also called \u2018line interleaved\u2019 display.\u00a0 With these type of displays, half the vertical resolution per eye in S3D mode is expected.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Polarized Passive 3D<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Polarized glasses have the advantage of being relatively inexpensive \u2013 more expensive than the cheap throw-away anaglyph glasses but much cheaper than the active shutter glasses chosen by Nvidia.\u00a0 AMD calls their implementation of stereoscopic 3D, &#8220;HD3D&#8221; and polarized 3D glasses and passive displays seem to be more popular with them and their partners than using the active shutter glasses and 120Hz displays which they also support.<\/p>\n<p>Polarized passive 3D cuts the resolution in half horizontally because a passive S3D system takes one HD image and splits it in two.\u00a0 The result is that from an original 1080p image, each eye now sees a 540p image which is half of the combined resolution that an active system offers. This loss of resolution results in less detailed images than the active shutter system.\u00a0 In addition, the missing lines can be annoying if the user fixates on them or sits too close to the display.\u00a0 Plus, text may be difficult to read in some games and passive 3D adds unwanted aliasing due to the loss of half of the vertical resolution compared with the 3D Vision&#8217;s full 1920&#215;1080 resolution per eye.<\/p>\n<p>The surface coating is the standard anti-glare matte finish that ViewSonic uses on all of their LCD\/LED models. The polarizer film is special. In a traditional display, there is just one orientation for the front polarizer film and one orientation for the rear polarizer film. In a polarized 3D display, the alternating rows will have opposite polarization. This is the way that content to each eye is controlled spatially for the V3D231 rather than time multiplexed as is done in the active 3D that ASUS uses for 3D Vision.\u00a0 The lenses always stay open in the polarized glasses while they are alternately switched on and off with the active method.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Creating S3D with active shutter glasses and 3D Vision<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Using shutter glasses to create 3D Vision, each eyepiece consists of a single LCD screen that uses a polarizing filter. The screen can be made either transparent or completely dark by varying the voltage sent to it. As the frame of an image is shown on the main display, one eye\u2019s LCD will be transparent while the other will be black.\u00a0 When the next frame appears, the orientation of the lenses is switched and the screen that was black will now be transparent with the voltage toggling, and it is synchronized with the main display\u2019s refresh rate using the IR emitter (or USB port for the wired glasses).\u00a0 This is called, \u201calternate-frame sequencing\u201d.<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Simply put, 3D Vision works by sequentially displaying offset \u201cleft\u201d and \u201cright\u201d versions of each frame in a game, and blocking the vision from one eye or the other by darkening the shutter glasses in synchronization with the display. Putting on the glasses and switching on 3D Vision immediately darkens the scene compared to 2D, and you will definitely need a bright display to compensate. The ASUS displays are excellent in this regard and much brighter than the ViewSonic display because they need to be.<\/p>\n<p>Using a 120Hz display means that the monitor can refresh the image 120 times a second vs. the standard 60. With alternate frame sequencing, it happens so quickly that the brain merges the images together creating the 3D effect.\u00a0 The downside is that the eyes are now only seeing the image 1\/2 the time, so the image looks dimmer than usual so you have to really increase the display\u2019s brightness<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some sensitive users report headaches simply from the opening and closing of the active shutter glasses.\u00a0 This is not an issue with passive polarized glasses since the lenses are always open.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Software and Support<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>First of all, one needs to realize that the ecosystem that Nvidia has developed for 3D Vision is far more robust than other solutions for gaming.\u00a0 ViewSonic uses the bundled TriDef 3D software for its passive 3D.\u00a0 We still have at least 60 PC games installed and here is what Tri-Def found by scanning our hard drive:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/tridef.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-28602\" title=\"tridef\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/tridef.jpg?resize=480%2C273\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/tridef.jpg?resize=480%2C273 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/tridef-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>It only found a handful of games and any other game that we wanted to add, we had to add manually.\u00a0 There are over 400 games supported in 3D by the TriDef software but it is not intuitive like with 3D Vision where almost all of the work is done automatically by the driver.\u00a0 Fortunately, TriDef has active forums where the users help each other and can also get help from TriDef reps in working around issues.<a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/re5settings.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-28603\" title=\"re5settings\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/re5settings.jpg?resize=480%2C282\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/re5settings.jpg?resize=480%2C282 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/re5settings-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>As you can see above, there are plenty of hot keys provided by the software.\u00a0 We played through quite a few games in our library to get a feel for passive 3D but are going to stick with <em>Resident Evil 5<\/em> as an example of decent quality S3D with both TriDef and 3D Vision software.\u00a0 And we played with a HD 6970 as well as a GTX 580 to see if the experience was any different.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t.\u00a0 We also used a HDMI 1.4a cable as well as DVI; the HDMI cable has the advantage of carrying the audio to the display&#8217;s built-in speakers.<\/p>\n<p>The TriDef 3D software suite is a relatively easy way to experience S3D. It will even convert 2D photos and videos into 3D but you won\u2019t get the kind of effect that you get with actual 3D footage.\u00a0 Gaming with TriDef 3D is more complicated than gaming with 3D Vision.\u00a0 If the TriDef software scan does not find the games you want, you have to add them manually. \u00a0TriDef software has predefined 3D profiles for many games that you select from a dropdown list.\u00a0 When a game is not listed as many of ours were not, we had to check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ddd.com\/forum\/viewforum.php?f=9\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.ddd.com\/forum\/viewforum.php?f=9', 'Game Profiles forum']);\" >Game Profiles forum<\/a> on TriDef\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>With the profile installed, the game is launched from the TriDef&#8217;s Ignition or from the user&#8217;s own self-created shortcut.\u00a0 It is generally more work than simply clicking on the game shortcut and having Nvidia&#8217;s drivers automatically handle everything.<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/through-the-lensScanLeave.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-28650\" title=\"through-the-lensScanLeave\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/through-the-lensScanLeave.jpg?resize=480%2C360\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/through-the-lensScanLeave.jpg?resize=480%2C360 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/through-the-lensScanLeave-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>The above image was taken partly through the polarized lens of the clip on 3D glasses.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s look closely at a small part of this scene also through the polarized lens.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/scanleave.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28651\" title=\"scanleave\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/scanleave.jpg?resize=480%2C278\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/scanleave.jpg?resize=480%2C278 480w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/scanleave-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>If you look even not so closely, you can see that every other horizontal line of resolution is missing.\u00a0 That is how the 3D effect is created.\u00a0 Each eye gets 1920&#215;540 resolution &#8211; the right eye getting a different view than from the left eye.\u00a0 It is rather obvious and very annoying to someone who is used to the full 1920&#215;1080 resolution to each eye with 3D Vision.\u00a0 The only advantage that the passive display has, is that the image isn&#8217;t darkened as much as with the original 3D Vision.<\/p>\n<p>Most gamers will have no issues playing first person or third person shooters and the <em>Left 4 Dead<\/em> series looks quite good.\u00a0 However, with half of the vertical lines of resolution missing, RPG players or players playing games with a lot of text may have issues with its readability.<\/p>\n<p>Worst of all,\u00a0 with this kind of passive 3D, the player is locked to a very specific body and head position.\u00a0 If you move your head very much while playing, you will get all sorts of visual artifacting.\u00a0 And it is very important to sit at the right distance from the screen; about a yard away seemed to be the best distance for the overall best 3D effect.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Performance Issues<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There is a common issue of framerates taking a significant hit when 3D in enabled with passive 3D or with 3D Vision&#8217;s active shutter method.\u00a0 Here is what you can expect playing Resident Evil in DX10 with fully maxed settings at 1080 with a Core i7-920 at 4GHz and a GTX 580 in regular 2D:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/RE5-136.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-28652\" title=\"RE5-136\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/RE5-136.jpg?resize=300%2C178\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/RE5-136.jpg?resize=300%2C178 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/RE5-136.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Not bad.\u00a0 138.6 FPS average in the variable benchmark.\u00a0 Now let&#8217;s play it in 3D using TriDef&#8217;s software:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/RE5-58.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-28653\" title=\"RE5-58\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/RE5-58.jpg?resize=300%2C173\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/RE5-58.jpg?resize=300%2C173 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/RE5-58.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>It could be that VSynch is being forced by the TriDef drivers as we are now averaging below 60fps &#8211; 56.8 &#8211; with the same system, the only difference is that we are playing in S3D.\u00a0 We got a similar slowdown with our HD 6970.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u00a0AMD&#8217;s HD3D<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We asked AMD about HD3D and the ViewSonic V3D231, and about HD3D in general. At the time, they hadn&#8217;t yet received one for testing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There are a few ways to send S3D signals to this monitor.\u00a0 The most obvious method is to use HDMI 1.4a.\u00a0 This is more of a plug and play method, as our driver will detect the HDMI 1.4a capability and expose our Quad Buffer to the application or middleware.\u00a0 In this format the driver sends a full resolution \u2018framepack\u2019 signal across the HDMI connection, and then the monitor takes that signal and converts it to a line-interleaved format for display on the panel.\u00a0 The drawback of this solution is that you are limited to 24Hz per eye at 1080p over HDMI with this monitor (but can do 60Hz per eye at 720p).<\/p>\n<p>The other way to do it is to force a specific format over DVI or HDMI.\u00a0 This method is less plug and play for most users because they need to have knowledge of the format that the display supports (eg. Line interleaved, checkerboard, side-by-side, etc), and then make a corresponding setting in the S3D software they are using.\u00a0 In this case, we know that the monitor is line interleaved, so we can make this setting in TriDef middleware output options.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Deus Ex: Human Revolution<\/em> is a very good looking game in S3D and we asked about it also:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For Deus Ex, TriDef middleware is not needed for Stereo 3D as it is one of our first native HD3D titles.\u00a0 This means that the game renders the left\/right image pairs and hooks into our driver directly with our Quad Buffer API.\u00a0 So if you launch the game outside of TriDef using an HDMI 1.4a connection, the Stereo 3D option should show up in the game.\u00a0 Deus Ex also has support for a limited number of line interleaved monitors, but they do this by EDID detection.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We were interested in OpenGL titles which are not supported by 3D Vision:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Regarding Wolfenstein:\u00a0 this is only supported by iZ3D middleware, and only in line interleaved mode (no HDMI 1.4a).\u00a0 We plan to expand OpenGL support in the future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Finally, we wanted to know what the HD 7970 brought new to HD3D:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As for the 7900 series, there are a few things.\u00a0 First, it is the most power single GPU card on the planet.\u00a0 This is great for HD3D, because you are potentially driving twice the number of pixels (for full resolution 3D monitors).\u00a0 The increased video memory (3G) also helps here, especially if you want to turn up the quality settings while doing S3D gaming.\u00a0 Also on the hardware side, we\u2019ve included support for \u2018Fast HDMI\u2019 \u2013 this is an improvement to the HDMI physical layer that increases bandwidth and enables 60 Hz per eye at 1080p on supported displays (you\u2019ll probably see some at CES).\u00a0 The rest are driver level improvement that coincide with the 7900 series launch \u2013 support for HD3D in conjunction with both CrossFire and Eyefinity (a real enthusiast configuration).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We appreciate AMD&#8217;s feedback and comments.\u00a0 Well, we have completed our testing of the ViewSonic V3D231 with a strong emphasis on gaming and 3D and it is time to head to our conclusion.<\/p>\n<h2><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: Conclusion--><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The ViewSonic V3D231 is a great way to inexpensively experience S3D gaming and to play 3D movies.\u00a0 The glasses are dirt-cheap and every member of the family can have their own pair.\u00a0 The only issue is that the TriDef solution pales in comparison to Nvidia&#8217;s 3D Vision and especially compared to 3D Vision 2.\u00a0 The issue of course with playing games with passive polarized glasses is that you are fixed to one spot and the vertical resolution is cut in half to 1920&#215;540 with associated artifacting and aliasing.\u00a0 However, we do not necessarily see these as competing formats since the price is so unequal.\u00a0 If you want to game in full 1080P at a high framerate and with the best support, you will choose Nvidia&#8217;s more expensive 3D Vision solution.<\/p>\n<p>For the approximately $300 that you pay for the ViewSonic V2D231, you get a very fast 60Hz LED that is excellent for 2D gaming and as a general purpose display.\u00a0 You also have the option to enjoy your 3D BluRay movies and many games in 3D.\u00a0 This might be considered &#8220;entry level&#8221; 3D and it is satisfying for many.\u00a0 It is also a great display for a family with young gamers.\u00a0 The passive polarized glasses are comfortable and almost disposable and are far cheaper to replace than the $150 active shutter glasses that they or their friends will likely break.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Pros<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The display is very fast with a 2ms rated response time and is ideal for gaming<\/li>\n<li>It is very thin and stylish<\/li>\n<li>The connectors are very easy to get to (but stick out from the back)<\/li>\n<li>The OSD menu has great options<\/li>\n<li>The included TriDef 3D Software works with either Nvidia or AMD video cards<\/li>\n<li>It is a very inexpensive way to enjoy passive S3D with cheap glasses; great for the kids!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Cons:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The color balance is slightly off and cannot be adjusted perfectly; the panel has all the issues associated with TN<\/li>\n<li>3D Gaming with TriDef is not a very robust S3D solution compared to 3D Vision; it requires a lot of adjustments, tweaking and research.<\/li>\n<li>Scan Interleave cuts the resolution from 1920&#215;1080 to 1920&#215;540 per eye and the visual fidelity suffers; you are also forced to hold one position to keep visual artifacting to a minimum in S3D gaming.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With passive 3D&#8217;s limitations in mind, the ViewSonic V3D231 is an inexpensive way to enjoy 3D movies and gaming with dirt-cheap polarized glasses that are perfect for a family with children.\u00a0 We will give it our ABT Great Value Award to ViewSonic&#8217;s passive polarized 3D solution in a complete $300 package.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/GreatValue.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/GreatValue.jpg?resize=150%2C251\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next up, we expect to review Thermaltake&#8217;s Frio and Frio OCK cooler as we overclock our aging but eminently serviceable Core i7-920 as far in excess of 4.0GHz as we can in preparation for Ivy Bridge and for evaluating some really fast new video cards.\u00a0 You can also expect a Kingston HyperX 240GB SSD review and several mini-reviews on Genius&#8217;
