From changing the drive’s SSID, wireless channels, security and more, the app adds a lot of security to your device. However, this app isn’t without drawbacks. It seems like every setting in regards to networking requires a 60 second wait time for the device to reboot. When changing the SSID, the device rebooted. Even when changing the security, the device rebooted, and so on.

This is a minor nuisance unless you’re constantly changing these setting. It would be useful if the app had a “commit changes and reboot device” button instead of forcing a reboot each time.

Using a Notebook

For this test, an older laptop purchased off Craigslist was used that has 3 USB ports, 2 of which were broken. When it finally went in, it snapped off the male plug of the USB port making USB drives and removable hard-drives completely unusable.

Unfortunately there was no luck connecting to the Wi-drive out of the box. It shows up perfectly as a wireless access point and Kingston’s app allows you to bridge your Wireless Internet connection with its own network. Evidently some users have had success, but a connection couldn’t be made to the laptop without needing a USB port.

Conclusion:

The Kingston Wi-Drive worked flawlessly with other devices. It was able to pinch and zoom photos, watch a video and browse other files on the Wi-Drive using 2 devices without any sense of lag. The advertised 30 feet of wireless access seemed to hold true.

The Wi-Drive got hot during use, mostly because it has an internal router constantly running to provide the service. This causes relatively short battery life and with the overall heat the device gives off, you would not want it in your pocket. Another minor gripe is the User Interface (UI) of the app could be more polished.

Overall the Kingston Wi-Drive performed flawlessly when accessing its files and it held up on the multi-user promise, by giving an extra 16GB of storage. We will report on it when it come out of beta for the Android platform. The Kingston Wi-Drive is a bargain at around 50 dollars for its functionality and practicality and it is a piece of tech that we will surely see more of in the future.

Pros:

It works great with multiple users to provide 16 (or 32) GB of wireless storage

It provides up to 30 feet of wireless access

Cons:

It produces a lot of heat

The Android apps are in beta

We would like to give the Kingston Wi-Drive our ABT Innovation Award!

–Mario Vasquez, ABT Contributing Editor

Please join us in our Forums

Become a Fan on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter

For the latest updates from ABT, please join our RSS News Feed

Join our Distributed Computing teams

Folding@Home – Team AlienBabelTech – 164304

SETI@Home – Team AlienBabelTech – 138705

World Community Grid – Team AlienBabelTech

[2533,7814,4454,7
4216,1415,3368,501,1212,87,4740,5083
post-28605","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-abt-news","category-articles","category-mini-reviews","category-technology","tag-16gb","tag-android","tag-ipad","tag-ipod","tag-kingston","tag-review","tag-wi-drive","tag-wireless-storage
["GET
