In addition they (and we) are using more and more mobile devices \u2013 smartphones, tablets, notebooks (soon ultrabooks) &#8212; and mobile services.<\/p>\n<p>So many devices are out there, so many services, so many options, it\u2019s tough to know:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 what\u2019s right for you<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 what does what it says it does<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 what does what they don\u2019t want to mention, but does<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 who\u2019s gonna\u2019 last<\/p>\n<p>A fresh example of the switch is Apple\u2019s latest Mac OS (Mountain Lion).\u00a0 It didn\u2019t slip by many folks that it shares a whole lotta\u2019 iOS features, capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s why Windows 8 has so many mobile computing features, capabilities and gives you a glimpse of their mobile strategy.<\/p>\n<p>These folks aren\u2019t interested in selling you their software.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Usage Buying<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They want to buy into it in bits and pieces, little by little with a very person-friendly name \u2013 SaaS (software as a service).<\/p>\n<p>It will all be wrapped in a cool hardware\/software name \u2013 cloud computing.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re doing it, just didn\u2019t realize it.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-21.jpg?resize=528%2C328\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Clouds Galore \u2013 <\/strong>You\u2019re nobody in the industry if you\u2019re not offering a bunch of different cloud products\/services.\u00a0 No one simply sells hardware or software anymore.\u00a0 It\u2019s a service industry.\u00a0 <strong><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You\u2019re using \u201ctheir\u201d services \u2013 Facebook, Chrome +, iTunes, Picasa, iCloud, Flickr, Amazon Cloud, Printerest, Twitter, pick your fave.<\/p>\n<p>Some you pay for, some you <strong><em>pay<\/em><\/strong> for.<\/p>\n<p>O.K., so the second form of payment isn\u2019t hard money; but you\u2019re paying because they\u2019re scraping\/using your information (check Wikipedia &#8211; data mining).<\/p>\n<p>Heck, even the benevolent <strong><em>\u201cDo No Evil\u201d<\/em><\/strong> Google recently got tagged grabbing stuff from our kid\u2019s iPhone (O.K., maybe not his, but\u2026).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unusual for them to make such an \u201cerror\u201d because they\u2019ve been so nice to their billions of users and hundreds of thousands of employees by providing so much free stuff.<\/p>\n<p>You know \u2026 your Gmail account, Google Maps, YouTube entertainment, Google Docs, translation, all those other neat little things that don\u2019t cost you a thing but your name, rank, serial number, everything you ever did\/going to do, photos you wish someone hadn\u2019t taken\/posted, little things like that.<\/p>\n<p>O.K., maybe kinda\u2019, just a little evil.<\/p>\n<p>All those other free service companies?<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re just glad it was Google that got caught making that error\u2026not them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Protection Hunters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, a lot of folks like the fact you\u2019re in such a hurry to put all the details in the cloud like the FBI, CIA, MI6, MSS (China), BfV (Germany), Mossad (Israel), others.<\/p>\n<p>The more stuff you put up there the easier it is for them to protect you from\u2026them.<\/p>\n<p>As Obra asked, <em>\u201cHow does it feel to be part of the oppressed minority?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Oh, there\u2019s no backing out now; for the most part folks are in the cloud and taking full advantage of it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-31.jpg?resize=318%2C247\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Photo Source: Maxwell Smart, Globe<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your Device, Our Data \u2013 <\/strong>BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) or consumerization of IT came about because the boss liked his iPhone\/smartphone.\u00a0 Then, he and the other important folks liked the iPad.\u00a0 Then, there\u2019s the computing device.\u00a0 It\u2019s your device and a combination of your\/my\/our data that has generated the need for a whole new level of enterprise service, support, protection.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While there may be a little concern about company information\/secrets, your boss is pretty happy with your increased use of smartphones, tablets and mobile computers.<\/p>\n<p>You probably were delighted when he\/she said you could BYOD (bring your own device) and the company may even pick up part of the cost.<\/p>\n<p>After all, it makes it easier for you to blur the lines between your personal\/business life so you can work remotely, at home, on holiday.<\/p>\n<p>And you do.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-41.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-41.jpg?resize=484%2C284\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Busy Highways \u2013 <\/strong>Content \u2013 data, photos, videos, presentations \u2013 is growing in leaps and bounds with all of our mobile devices producing volumes of data and metadata.\u00a0 By 2015, it will have increased an estimated 12-fold.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 Cisco<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>In fact, Cisco recently estimated that cloud computing traffic will increase a whopping 12 times by 2015, compared to the traffic volume of last year.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>All the traffic will come from:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 4.6 quadrillion emails sent<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1.8 quadrillion web pages browsed<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 230 trillion photos uploaded to Facebook<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 99 trillion minutes of YouTube videos watched<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 streaming video\/TV, streaming music<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all part of living in an always-on and sometimes (or most-of-the-time) connected world. But it really tightens your jaws when you\u2019re left hanging high, dry and can\u2019t connect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not Perfect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It happens\u2026even the best can only claim 99.8 percent uptime (more like 99.5 percent) which is still better than the NASA or other data centers that average about 90 percent uptime.<\/p>\n<p>Or, as Grady said, <em>\u201cWhat am I supposed to do? He deals the cards&#8230; I just play the hand I get.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t like it but we tolerate it in this imperfect world because it\u2019s either free or costs almost nothing.<\/p>\n<p>One cloud thing we just can\u2019t get into is the rush for cloud storage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-51.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-28712\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-51.jpg?resize=311%2C310\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-51.jpg?resize=311%2C310 311w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-51-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-51-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Data Weight Problem \u2013 <\/strong>People upload 24-hours of video content to YouTube every 60 seconds.\u00a0 The broadcast industry throws up audio\/video content of all types just to entertain you.\u00a0 People of every age\/sex grab the content they want\/need and store it.\u00a0 It\u2019s no wonder that IDC has moved their storage projections up into the Zettabyte category (just a monstrous pile of stuff) of storage.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 WD<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You may have heard a rumor that storage is becoming such a major problem that the best way for you to solve it is to store your stuff in their clouds.<\/p>\n<p>Oh sure, we use their picture storage when we\u2019re passing photos to friends\/family, even documents\/presentations we\u2019re passing around.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re just not into using them for our serious, important, private tablet\/computer storage back-up.<\/p>\n<p>You probably didn\u2019t notice it, but they\u2019re storage clouds are big.<\/p>\n<p>Being big they\u2019re the first places those \u201cprotective services\u201d go when they\u2019re looking for someone\/something.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-61.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-61.jpg?resize=399%2C300\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Photo Source:\u00a0 Flying Magazine<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dangerous Clouds \u2013 <\/strong>Just the name \u2013 cloud \u2013 sounds so big, gentle but there can be all kinds of problems in them.\u00a0 The cloud service people have their agendas, which isn\u2019t too bad when the storage is free.\u00a0 But huge clouds of data\/information \u2013 riches \u2013 are the places you hack first if you\u2019re less than honest.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>They\u2019re also the places where hackers, whackers, hacktavists and cyber crooks hang out just waiting for you to store things like your PINs, Passwords and important data.<\/p>\n<p>Then to, there are the people (they\u2019re only human) who designed systems that never make mistakes\u2026never make mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>As John Witter said, <em>\u201cYa know, ideals and realties are very far apart.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s possible for cloud service providers to lose the data you stored on their servers.<\/p>\n<p>But you\u2019re more likely to lose your data when you want to change cloud service providers, or fail to meet their terms of service (TOS).<\/p>\n<p>You did read the user agreement, right?<\/p>\n<p>Right!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sorry About That<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A lot of them say right there in their mouse type that when you terminate their service they automatically delete your data\u2026poof!<\/p>\n<p>Then too, they often tell you right up front (mouse type) that anything you store on their servers is okay for them to use.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Google\u2019s, Facebook\u2019s TOS (everyone is pretty similar) states that if you post, submit or display content on or through their services they have perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free and non-exclusive licenses to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute the stuff.<\/p>\n<p>So we use them as sparingly as possible and encourage our kids to think two or three times before they park their content in the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>All of our devices \u2013 smartphone, tablet, notebook (soon to be upgraded to an ultrabook) and desktop \u2013 are heavied up on storage capacity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ours is Ours<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sure, we use the cloud to back up the devices. But we also have personal and family clouds.<\/p>\n<p>Our personal cloud is a quad-interface, 1.5TB dual-drive RAID.\u00a0 It\u2019s rugged, easy to take back\/forth to the office\/home; and can be tucked in my bag if I even think I\u2019m going to need more information, more storage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-71.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-71.jpg?resize=198%2C243\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Source \u2013 Newer Technology, Inc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our Cloud \u2013 <\/strong>While it\u2019s impossible to avoid the cloud with all the web services that are out there, it\u2019s not a place we want to store anything we feel is important or private.\u00a0 Our new home cloud is a 16TB RAID that we hope will be enough storage and backup for a year or so.\u00a0 But the way our kids pack away photos, videos, music, ebooks, web research and other stuff, it\u2019s hard to tell; but at least it\u2019s a smaller invasion target with pretty good security.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For the family cloud, we just connected an OWC Qx2 desktop RAID unit to our home server.
