{"id":28740,"date":"2012-04-03T14:39:03","date_gmt":"2012-04-03T13:39:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=28740"},"modified":"2012-04-08T04:38:04","modified_gmt":"2012-04-08T03:38:04","slug":"thermaltakes-frio-frio-ock-can-take-the-heat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/thermaltakes-frio-frio-ock-can-take-the-heat\/","title":{"rendered":"Thermaltake&#8217;s Frio &#038; Frio OCK can take the heat!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Frio-specs.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a>We received the Frio and Frio OCK CPU coolers from\u00a0Thermaltake for evaluation at the end of last year.\u00a0\u00a0Previously we\u00a0had issues with\u00a0reaching speeds over 3.8GHz with our Core i7-920\u00a0using our <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=14237&amp;all=1\">Noctua NH-U12P SE2 CPU cooler<\/a>.\u00a0 Now that we are testing faster and faster graphics including <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=28910\">the GTX 680<\/a>, we feel the pressure to\u00a0increase the speed of our CPU and this is our adventure in overclocking it further.<\/p>\n<p>We have had\u00a0our Intel Core i7-920\u00a0CPU\/Gigabyte X58MB for 2-1\/2 years and we were originally\u00a0doubtful that we could reach our goal of 4.2GHz which would allow us to set our aging Core i7-920 right alongside a mildly overclocked i7-2700K in terms of performance.\u00a0 Would the new Thermaltake Frio or Frio OCK help us to\u00a0reach our goals?<\/p>\n<p>The 5-heatpipe Thermaltake\u00a0Frio (below, right)\u00a0is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106150\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106150', '$58.99 at Newegg.com']);\" >$58.99 at Newegg.com<\/a>.\u00a0 The 6-heatpipe Frio OCK (below, left)\u00a0is currently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106178\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106178', '$77.99 at Newegg']);\" >$77.99 at Newegg<\/a>\u00a0and it compares in price with our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608014\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608014', 'Noctua NH-U12P-SE2 at Newegg for $72.99']);\" >Noctua NH-U12P-SE2 at Newegg for $72.99<\/a>.\u00a0 Both of these Thermaltake\u00a0coolers are ready for the 6-core Intel CPUs and neither of these coolers are considered budget by any means while the Frio OCK (and the Noctua)\u00a0is aimed at the higher end of air coolers.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-28766\" title=\"Frio-and-OCK-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Frio-and-OCK-2.jpg?resize=300%2C184\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Frio-and-OCK-2.jpg?resize=300%2C184 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Frio-and-OCK-2.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As important as saving money on hardware is, this editor believes that the choice of a CPU cooler is critical to any PC build. The cooler should never be cheap or retail. Too much depends on it if you value keeping your CPU cool or especially if you plan to overclock.\u00a0It is highly recommended\u00a0that you instead look for sales and\u00a0use\u00a0rebates to save money.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/FrioBox1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-29128\" title=\"FrioBox\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/FrioBox1.jpg?resize=300%2C274\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/FrioBox1.jpg?resize=300%2C274 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/FrioBox1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This review is not just about \u201cvalue\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 If you want to cool\u00a0a Phenom II X4 or even an X6, a value CPU cooler such as a <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?tag=hyper-n212\">Coolermaster Hyper N 212+<\/a> will suffice.\u00a0 Even Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs such as Core i5 and Core i7 run relatively cool until you begin to push the core speeds up to 4.5GHz or so.\u00a0 Unless you are supplying\u00a0a relatively high\u00a0voltage to most CPUs, a budget cooler will work nicely.\u00a0 Even stock heatsinks are evolving to keep up with the hotter running quad-core and hex-core\u00a0CPUs.\u00a0\u00a0 Of course, the FX series of AMD CPUs almost\u00a0require watercooling or a high-end air cooler and a very beefy power supply unit (PSU) if you are really serious about <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=28491\">a Bulldozer\u00a0overclock in excess of 4.4GHz as we were<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Both Thermaltake Frio\u00a0boxes advertise &#8220;Designed for Overclocking&#8221; and we can expect that the Frio OCK is going to be more efficient as it uses 6 heatpipes and supports 240W TDP CPUs compared to 5 heatpipes and 220W for the Frio.\u00a0 How does this affect practical overclocking of our Core i7-920?\u00a0 Are we able to beat the cooling of our current Noctua cooler which allows us to clock confortably to 3.8GHz?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-28782\" title=\"OCK-box-front\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/OCK-box-front.jpg?resize=247%2C300\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/OCK-box-front.jpg?resize=247%2C300 247w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/OCK-box-front-846x1024.jpg 846w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/OCK-box-front.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 247px) 100vw, 247px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Intel\u2019s newest Core i7 and i5 CPUs mark a new and exciting advance in processing power, but they definitely require a higher quality heatsink than for our older Core2Duo or\u00a0Core2Quad CPUs\u00a0or for overclocking our older AMD Phenom II 980 BE X4, especially if you want to cool them without excessive noise.\u00a0 Our test CPU, the Intel Core\u00a0i7-920, also requires excellent cooling once you approach 4.0GHz as its stock clock\u00a0is only 2.66GHz.\u00a0 Thermaltake offers an easy entry into the world of premium\u00a0air cooling with the Frio and\/or Frio OCK, both\u00a0of which are each complete\u00a0packages that offer everything you need to cool your overclocked CPU, including thermal paste.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-28775\" title=\"Ftio-ready2install\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Ftio-ready2install.jpg?resize=246%2C300\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Ftio-ready2install.jpg?resize=246%2C300 246w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Ftio-ready2install-842x1024.jpg 842w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Ftio-ready2install.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 246px) 100vw, 246px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Heat is drawn away from the CPU by the base of the heatsink and is transferred up into the array of hi-grade aluminum fins for dissipation.\u00a0Two large 120mm fans spin &#8211; one\u00a0on each side of the heatsink fins array in a \u201cpush-pull\u201d configuration, blowing CPU-heated air through and away from the heatsink.\u00a0 There is also a manual rotary switch at the end of a short cable\u00a0that allows you to max out the fan&#8217;s rpm if you need them.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Frio ships with\u00a0a Thermaltake\u00a0multi-socket mounting system that has\u00a0an easy and\u00a0very straightforward installation\u00a0while the Frio OCK is quite different and a bit more complex for\u00a0our Intel LGA1366 platform.\u00a0\u00a0They are\u00a0also adapted for 1156 and 775 platforms and Intel&#8217;s latest extreme 6-core CPUs\u00a0as well as AMD socket AM2, AM2+ and AM3\/AM3+ platforms. A\u00a0small tube of\u00a0Thermaltake&#8217;s thermal compound is included.<\/p>\n<p>Before we compare these coolers to each other and to the Noctua cooler, let&#8217;s unbox, install, and test\u00a0them individually using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocbase.com\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.ocbase.com\/', 'OCCT\u00a04.1 ']);\" >OCCT\u00a04.1 <\/a>as an extreme test to load all the cores of our CPU at 100%.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\/\/ <![CDATA[\n            google_ad_client = \"pub-7021221536180758\"; Before we test it, let&#8217;s set up its bigger brother, the Frio OCK. \u00a0The method of installation is quite different as the cooling design is different; the Frio OCK uses a two-piece design\u00a0and the two fans are built into a single housing that is\u00a0designed to slip over the Frio OCK&#8217;s radiator&#8217;s after it is installed and\u00a0secured to\u00a0the backplate on the other side of the motherboard.<\/p>\n<p>Removing the Frio cooler is just as straightforward as installation. \u00a0Loosen the 4 nuts, then remove them from\u00a0the back of the motherboard while supporting the cooler and just pull it out together with its fans.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Frio OCK<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The OCK stands for OverClocking King. The Frio OCK is designed very differently from the Frio including regarding mounting. \u00a0This 6-heatpipe CPU cooler comes in two sections. \u00a0The radiator is attached through the motherboard with screws directly into a backplate with nuts that secure it.\u00a0\u00a0After the radiator is installed, \u00a0the fans are installed\u00a0over the radiator as part of\u00a0a second look at its box.\u00a0 This time it is not just, &#8220;Designed for Overclocking&#8221;; it is a &#8220;<em>Design For OverClocker King<\/em>&#8220;, and it proudly supports CPUs up to 240W including Intel&#8217;s LGA2011 and AMD&#8217;s FM1.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/OCK-box-front1.jpg\"><img mounting pieces of hardware firmly attached through the mother board to the Thermaltake Intel backplate, you can see two screw holes where the Frio OCK cooler is attached and locked down. \u00a0And you can now see the reason that the fans have to go over the cooler after it is installed, unlike with the Frio which has a very different mounting system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a Both the Frio and the Frio OCK have very smooth mirror-like surfaces.\u00a0The end user should\u00a0only use a dab of any thermal compound; specifically, a drop 4-5 mm in diameter in the center of the HS contact plate. Applying too much compound will lower the thermal conductivity and adversely affect the cooling performance of your CPU cooler.<\/p>\n<p>We do not recommend polishing these coolers as they already have a mirror-like surface. \u00a0It looks like we may have a performance cool and quiet winner by the specifications and the \u201clook\u201d and feel of these precision built CPU coolers. \u00a0These coolers look great. \u00a0Let&#8217;s check our test bed and then see how far we can push our Core i7-920 over our current limit of 3.8GHz that we run with our Noctua cooler.<\/p>\n<h3><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: Test Configuration &#038; OCCT--><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Next page...\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif?w=720\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><strong>The Test<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We have been living with the Frio OCK inside our case for\u00a0many weeks and we love it for all of our needs including extreme CPU overclocking. The last time we ran a comparison, we got our Core i7 920 to 3.5 GHz on the stock Intel cooler. However, the temperatures were excessively high \u2013 well over 80C in games and thermal protection would throttle the CPU speed if we tried running Vantage or any synthetic test like\u00a0OCCT that stress the CPU. We would say that relatively safe temperatures can be achieved at 3.2 GHz with the stock Intel cooler. In contrast, we managed to get our Core i7 to 3.5 GHz with Hyper 212 Plus rather safely. Unfortunately, at 3.8 GHz we could run games but with either Vantage or OCCT, we would throttle our Core i7-920 and once we saw 99C (which is shockingly high) with the Hyper 212 &#8211; even with two 120mm fans in push-pull.<\/p>\n<p>So, the stock Intel cooler runs out of safety margin at about 3.2 GHz and\u00a0our Hyper N212+ quits\u00a0between 3.5-3.8GHz. In contrast, our Noctua NH-U12P SE 2 cooler handled both of these speeds with temperatures maxing out in the low-60s Centigrade. So we went for a much more extreme overclock on our Core i7, this time raising our voltage +.2V; somewhat dangerous to its chances of its having a long life but definitely raising the i7-920&#8217;s core temperatures for our tests. This time, we managed to remain stable all the way to\u00a03.8GHz for 24\/7 use\u00a0and we could even run benches at 4.0GHz.<\/p>\n<p>Now we are going to set up our Frio and Fruio OCK CPU coolers. Let\u2019s take a look at our setup:<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Setup and the Test <\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Test Configuration<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Intel Core i7-920 (stock, and was able to keep our Core i7-920 cool at 3.8GHz for 24\/7 use. \u00a0The issues arose when we tried to turn turbo on for 4.0GHz. \u00a0Idle temps are fine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: cooler<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Next we installed the Thermaltake Frio and we checked our temps before starting OCCT.\u00a0 The Frio also does fine at idle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Frio-idle-3.8TurboON.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29192\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sadly, the Frio cannot keep the 4.0GHz overclock although it lasts longer in the test than the Noctua cooler and is a couple of degrees cooler. \u00a0It is also perfectly fine for 3.8GHz and will also play games at 4.0GHz.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Frio-MAXload-4.0Graph.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29195\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0We were pretty convinced that we would not get 4.0GHz stable without accepting dangerous full-load temperatures in some applications. \u00a0Our last chance for this evaluation is the Frio OCK. \u00a0Will it&#8217;s 6-heatpipe design allow us to reach 4.0GHz? \u00a0Higher?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Thermaltake Frio OCK<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As usual, we begin testing and to our amazement, 4.0GHz is a breeze! \u00a0Temperatures definitely get warm, however, this is a synthetic test and you will never see all 4 cores loaded 100% for ten minutes in any real world situation. \u00a0It looks like temperatures peaked at 79C.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/FrioOCK-MAXload-4.0Graph1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29198\" \/>\n<strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to cooling your overclocked hot Intel or AMD CPU efficiently and quietly, Thermaltake is the company to turn to. Just as we saw the Hyper 212 Plus quietly eclipse the stock cooler and the Noctua NH-U12P SE2 silently passes the budget cooler, we see the Frio OCK surpass our Noctua. If you have a Core i7 or i5 that you really want to push to its maximum overclock by safely using air-cooling, the Thermaltake Frio OCK may be for you. If you want to save money and have less demands on your cooler, the Frio is an excellent cooler and it is more efficient at cooling than even the more expensive Noctua cooler that we are now moving to our Core i3-2105 system. \u00a0Thermaltake&#8217;s Frio and Frio OCK come highly recommended by this reviewer!<\/p>\n<p>Thermaltake&#8217;s two-piece design for the OCK is unique in that it allows for a very large cooler to be installed without having to suffer in a cramped installation space; and the Frio installs just as easily.
