We usually come home and have things to do and we want quick access to them. We want something convenient, easy, and loud enough to play audio throughout our homes. The Concise iPhone Speaker by Genius is a perfect match. We were expecting so much less &#8220;oomph&#8221; than it actually produced. It is surprising for such a small speaker. Inside the SP-i500 is a high quality 1.5&#8243; driver with a total output of two watts.<\/p>\n<p>The speaker is loud and the\u00a0sound has great clarity. This is perfect for any type of room; all you need is an outlet as the speaker itself takes up little space. The SP-i500 is a nice glossy black &#8211; that unfortunately attracts fingerprints. The dedicated snooze button makes this device perfect for its\u00a0alarm function. Inside the SP-i500 box is\u00a0its respective power cord and 3 &#8220;cradles&#8221; for different Apple products. The cradles are labeled to fit iPod Classic, iPhone 3\/3Gs, and the iPhone 4\/iPod Touch. These cradles\u00a0fit over the docking portion of the speaker, and once in place, they are meant to stay there. For this editor, these are throw away items as I have multiple devices and the different sizes\u00a0completely nullify a need for these cradles.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What\u2019s in the box<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; text-align: -webkit-center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-35.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29493\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-35.jpg?resize=502%2C308\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-35.jpg?resize=502%2C308 628w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-35-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Why are the the cradles included? The cradles fit into the docking portion of the SP-i500 and are meant to hold a product securely. The problem? They are very hard to take out; we even had to insert very thin object in order to pry out a cradle. For a single product this isn\u2019t an issue. However, for multiple Apple products, such as an iPod Classic and an iPod touch which are very different sizes \u2013the cradles will have to be switched in and out and it becomes a hassle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29494\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-45.jpg?resize=428%2C248\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-45.jpg?resize=428%2C248 528w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-45-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 428px) 100vw, 428px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The cradles\u00a0make your iPhone or other product fit nicely but since the cradles are difficult to remove, they lose practically with multiple devices. We hope in the next revision that\u00a0Genius will design an easier way to remove these cradles. The SP-i500 is high in quality and\u00a0 a small notch\u00a0would allow easy\u00a0removal of\u00a0the cradles and it would solve the problem instantly.<\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\"><strong>Surprise Solution<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_0027-900x647.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29484 aligncenter\" title=\"IMG_0027 (900x647)\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_0027-900x647.jpg?resize=432%2C310\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_0027-900x647.jpg?resize=432%2C310 900w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_0027-900x647-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Genius included a convenient auxiliary input on the back of the SP-i500 which is a great solution to\u00a0the multiple device dilemma. With a simple audio cable, you can attach any outputting device to the SP-i500. A friend of mine who\u00a0has very weak laptop speakers\u00a0found this is a great backup speaker system. You won&#8217;t get extreme clarity and quality such as those offered by expensive alternatives, but this dock packs a high-qaulity loud speaker for its size.<\/p>\n<p>From a hardware point-of-view, the SP-i500 has high quality audio output and looks very sleek with its glossy black finish. The device has a small form-factor and doesn&#8217;t take up too much space.\u00a0 Although it connects to a wall outlet,\u00a0it would have been a plus if it had some sort of battery system for portability and perhaps a remote.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no &#8216;next song&#8217; button and it requires manually using the device while docked.<\/p>\n<p>The SP-i500 sounds surprisingly good and crisp with all tested devices. The speaker did not have very much bass which is not a problem for those who don\u2019t need it, sbut hip-hop lovers might not appreciate tits lack. Loudness is not a problem, but there seems to some issue of ones ability to raise the volume to the maximum.<\/p>\n<p>At certain levels, it seems to be very loud and clear and that should simply be at max volume.\u00a0 However, you can raise it even higher and this makes the sound become distorted. The speakers lose quality quickly at the highest\u00a0levels. We find ourselves keeping the SP-i500 at lower levels because it sounds great without raising\u00a0its \u00a0volume to the maximum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-55.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29495\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-55.jpg?resize=502%2C300\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-55.jpg?resize=502%2C300 628w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-55-300x179.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the device there are volume controls, a center button for play\/pause, and power functions. We wish there was controls for changing songs, or at the least, accessing voice control\/Siri.\u00a0 Double-clicking the center button\u00a0does not\u00a0shuffle songs as many\u00a0other docks do. Since you have to\u00a0manually switch to the next song, a remote control would be convenient. But at the price point, these are minor gripes.<\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\"><strong>The App that Tried<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Now for the iOS portion of this review. Your Apple device can function as\u00a0an alarm clock with this device\u00a0using the native alarm clock function or with\u00a0the Genius\u00a0app, but does it work?<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29300\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-8.jpg?resize=318%2C417\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-8.jpg?resize=318%2C417 318w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-8-228x300.jpg 228w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><em>App Download page<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This application is free and works independently or in conjunction with the SP-i500. Once you plug an IOS device in for the first time it instantly informs you that you&#8217;re missing the app and prompts you to visit\u00a0an App Store link.\u00a0\u00a0 Unfortunately,\u00a0if you don\u2019t like the app and want to uninstall it, you will get prompted every time &#8211; it doesn\u2019t remember if you say, no. This is very unfortunate if you don\u2019t want the application.<\/p>\n<p>The application&#8221; UI is very nicely designed but comes with no instructions. It takes some exploring but once you understand how to navigate the application, it\u2019s simple to use. Upon opening the app, you are presented with a choice of two clock designs and they\u00a0are accessed by swiping the screen left or right:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29301\" title=\"Untitled-9\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-9.jpg?resize=493%2C374\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-9.jpg?resize=493%2C374 493w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-9-300x227.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 493px) 100vw, 493px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can choose between three different animated characters. One for timer purposes, and the other two for alarm clock functions. Genius did a good job here with the characters as they all have unique personalities, voices, and sound effects. Each has 2 settable alarms\/timers. The sounds they play when the time is reached can be a recording you made, the preset sound effects\/voices, or different song(s) directly from your library.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-65.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29496\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-65.jpg?resize=423%2C565\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-65.jpg?resize=423%2C565 470w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-65-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is good and works great as long you keep the app open. We set the alarm for 1 minute<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">,<\/span> closed the app and continued\u00a0with browsing and using other apps &#8211; one minute passed and no alarm. We opened the app to see if there were any errors in the alarm settings and the alarm went off immediately upon opening the app.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If you forget to open the app before going to sleep, you will miss the alarm. This isn\u2019t always the case as it worked sometimes, and other times it doesn\u2019t. It\u00a0may be something\u00a0conflicting with backgrounding in iOS and how the application is handling it. This is a big negative! While the App looks good, it just isn\u2019t reliable enough for me to pass on the native alarm of iOS.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-111.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-29303\" title=\"Untitled-11\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-111.jpg?resize=495%2C308\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-111.jpg?resize=495%2C308 550w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-111-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The app needs some minor\u00a0reworking, but the hardware is excellent and well worth a try. The SP-i500 is at a price of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geniuseshop.com\/p-10734-Genius-SP-i500-iPhone-Speaker\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.geniuseshop.com\/p-10734-Genius-SP-i500-iPhone-Speaker', '55 dollars']);\" >55 dollars<\/a>, which is average for these <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">types<\/span> of docks. The design is a nice-looking black and it\u00a0doesn\u2019t take up a lot of space.
