Admittedly, a few birds did act strange, but that&#8217;s no reason to&#8230;\u201d<\/em> <strong>\u2013 Sebastian Sholes, fisherman in diner, <em>\u201cThe Birds,\u201d<\/em> Universal, 1963<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Back in what our son now calls prehistoric time, games were one of the prime reasons guys joined the Homebrew Club. That and trying to figure out neat things to do with oversized, limited-capacity things called microprocessors.<\/p>\n<p>Games \u2013 development and play \u2013 weren\u2019t for the faint of heart. They were for the few\u2026the proud\u2026the males!<\/p>\n<p>Really geeky guys who slept under their desks in the evening and fortified themselves with Twinkies followed their dreams to program winners that would work on Nolan Bushnell\u2019s Atari systems.<\/p>\n<p>A few years after the Tramiels took control of Atari, we worked with them off and on to promote the real guys\u2019 systems including the Lynx and Jaguar\u2026the first outstanding color screen systems you could play outside your darkened room.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest portable game competitor was Nintendo with their ghastly grey-screened clamshell.<\/p>\n<p>The serious guys&#8211;Sony, Sega and Microsoft&#8211;kept true to their market and gave you the consoles and games they knew you really wanted, needed.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone had three-year product cycles and even with the ups\/downs, it was still a guy\u2019s \u201csport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When female players raised their voices, Mitch Brenner responded, <em>\u201cYou&#8217;re just a poor, innocent victim of circumstances.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Struggling Nintendo served up the laughable Wii and OMG suddenly the whole family got involved.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gamer Takes Her Place<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today, the game industry knows that 40% of the gamers are female and the median age is 35, so take that kid!<\/p>\n<p>The game industry \u2013 hardware and software \u2013 has worked hard to capture the imagination of every segment of society\u2026increasing the market penetration and broadening the audience.<\/p>\n<p>The goal has been simple \u2013 incorporate video games into our daily culture, social fabric.<\/p>\n<p>And they\u2019ve done a pretty good job:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 65% of American households play computer and video games<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 38% of American homes have a video game console<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The average game player is 35 years old<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 One out of four gamers is over age 50<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Women age 18 or older represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (33%) than boys age 17 or younger (18%)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 41% of Americans expect to purchase one or more games this year<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 63% of parents believe games are a positive part of their children&#8217;s lives<\/p>\n<p>Despite what the doomsayer in the diner said, <em>\u201cIt&#8217;s the end of the world,\u201d<\/em> games are a healthy distraction for people.<\/p>\n<p>Console folks have also worked with anyone\/everyone to get the console into the family mainstream with DVD players, iNet connectivity and on-demand video playing.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Nintendo had the out-of-home market pretty much to themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Games on feature phones were as anemic and simple minded as the early days, whereas smartphone producers wanted to give people reasons to upgrade beyond phone calls, email.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Always with You<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So they had software dudes\/dudettes develop smaller versions of their single and multi-person games. (Yes, they discovered that gals not only played games, they were \u201caggressive.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29509\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-27.jpg?resize=454%2C233\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-27.jpg?resize=454%2C233 454w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-27-300x153.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Power Downloads \u2013 <\/strong><em>Feature phones usually come with the simplest of game software bundled with them to help you run down your battery.\u00a0 The real smartphone users \u2013 iOS, Android, WP7 \u2013 go to the app store and download their games.\u00a0 Freemium and multi-player games are gaining ground because they get you in, keep you in and involve communities<\/em>.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 Nielsen<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They loved the multi-player games because that meant\u2026more air time!<\/p>\n<p>The new smartphones are, as someone recently noted, <em>\u201cmore powerful than the computers initially used to send men to the moon.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In no time, folks were upgrading their phones to get games that were initially free became a buy for the newer, more action-packed games. Today, the games are so good and the personal interaction so challenging that the number of mobile game players keeps growing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29510\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-36.jpg?resize=423%2C129\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-36.jpg?resize=423%2C129 423w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-36-300x91.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Gone Gamin\u2019 \u2013 <\/strong><em>The earliest game players won\u2019t admit it in meetings, but they still play a lot of games and the feature\/smart phones give them a chance to keep their skills\/reflexes in top condition.\u00a0 While younger kids claim leadership in mobile gaming, it\u2019s the female who is the most serious, most aggressive player, and their numbers are growing.<\/em>\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 eMarketer<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Men and women, young and old upgraded to the newer, more powerful smartphones so they could experience better and longer play action.<\/p>\n<p>Oh sure, they rationalize by saying they need the new phone so they can stay in touch with their social media friends, watch movies on the go, do their research\/shopping, conduct business 24&#215;7; but we both know\u2026it\u2019s the game!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29511\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-46.jpg?resize=580%2C370\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-46.jpg?resize=580%2C370 580w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-46-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Smartphone Biz \u2013 <\/strong><em>Men\/women, young\/old all say the reason they must upgrade to a smartphone is to improve their calling quality and stay in touch on important stuff using email and the iNet. O.K., they may have those apps and a lot of other business apps on their device, but it\u2019s still the games that get most of the action.<\/em>\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 Nielsen<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But it\u2019s \u00a0O.K.\u00a0 It gets our kid out of his room and outside so he can enjoy a little fresh air and sunshine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29512\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-56.jpg?resize=490%2C275\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-56.jpg?resize=490%2C275 544w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-56-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Time Consumption \u2013 <\/strong><em>For some of us, it\u2019s a lot easier to do our online work with a decent-sized keyboard and screen; but increasingly, people want to do \u201ceverything\u201d on a single device and for many millennials that means a smartphone most of the time.<\/em>\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 comScore, Alexa, Flurry Analytics<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Options Expand<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But the phone gaming upswing has obviously had an impact on the in-home sales of consoles, games.<\/p>\n<p>Recent Nielsen studies show:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 59 percent of the smartphone users have downloaded games, 9 percent of feature phone users<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 61 percent said they had bought, used a game within the past month<\/p>\n<p>Analyst Group Flurry reported that iOS, Android gaming sales exceeded $1.9 billion in 2011 and the developer industry is bullish that the market will only continue its steady growth in the years ahead.<\/p>\n<p>They probably got their foothold when Cathy Brenner asked so innocently<em>, \u201c<\/em><em>Can I bring the lovebirds, Mitch? They haven&#8217;t harmed anyone.\u201d<\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29513\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-66.jpg?resize=482%2C264\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-66.jpg?resize=482%2C264 482w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-66-300x164.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Going Growth \u2013 <\/strong><em>Let\u2019s face it, the feature\/smart phone is with you all the time and few of us would even consider leaving home without it.\u00a0 While there are still a lot of closet gamers (older, more \u201cmature\u201d) and people who don\u2019t publicize their scores, they have no problem with catching a quick gaming fix on-the-go.\u00a0 And the numbers\/amount of time involved keeps growing.<\/em>\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 iSuppli<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>All they have to do is:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Get their next version to be the killer gotta-have game that folks play alone or with others and\u2026talk about<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Figure out how to make consumers aware of their new game<\/p>\n<p>To understand why developers are so anxious to provide (pay) device manufacturers with freemium games, Nielsen noted that 40 percent of them found the new stuff directly on their phones.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, 36 percent heard about them from friends and family.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all the noise about people rushing to buy new smartphones and the spin game developers complaints that they are killing the old-fashioned game folks, it\u2019s still a lot of smoke\/mirrors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here to Play<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Console and portable system purchases may be down, but they\u2019re a long way from extinction and being retired to the museum.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29514\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Untitled-75.jpg?resize=458%2C289\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Yeah But \u2013 <\/strong><em>According to the app store managers, developers and mobile analysts, the smartphone is going to gobble up the video game market.\u00a0 But the facts don\u2019t quite correspond to the fiction.\u00a0 If anything, mobile gaming is not only a relaxing outlet all by itself, it probably stimulates increased sale of console systems for the family to play, enjoy.<\/em>\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 Flurry Analytics<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In fact, the mobile platforms only represent about eight percent of the U.S. multi-platform gaming market.<\/p>\n<p>Around the globe computer-based\/online gaming represents a greater share of the gaming market.
