It&#8217;s based on AMD&#8217;s GPU named &#8220;Cape Verde&#8221; and its stock core clock is 1GHz.\u00a0 We evaluated the <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=28819&amp;all=1\">Sapphire HD 7770 GHz Overclocked edition<\/a> a month later and we awarded it an ABT Editor&#8217;s Choice with the caveat that it appeared to be priced a little optimistically at $169.95 because it competed with AMD&#8217;s own strongly discounted and discontinued &#8211; and\u00a0faster &#8211; HD 6800 series.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Overall, the\u00a0Sapphire HD 7770 GHz OverClocked Edition performed very well as\u00a0it is\u00a0factory overclocked to 1150\/1250MHz and warrantied\u00a0by Sapphire, and we found out that it could be overclocked even further.\u00a0 We did suggest that market pricing would soon take effect.\u00a0 And now you can find this same OverClocked edtion at Newegg\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102968\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.newegg.com']); _gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102968', 'for $149']);\">for $149<\/a>\u00a0featuring a free\u00a0game download,\u00a0and it is still\u00a0priced\u00a0only about ten to twenty dollars more than\u00a0a standard HD 7770 making it a good value.<\/p>\n<div id=\"main\">\n<div id=\"contentwrapper\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Enter\u00a0the new <strong>SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X HD 7770 GHz EDITION OC 1GB GDDR5 <\/strong>at $149<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Sapphire-VX-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29739\" title=\"Sapphire-VX-1\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Sapphire-VX-1.jpg?resize=480%2C303\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Sapphire-VX-1.jpg?resize=480%2C303 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Sapphire-VX-1-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The names keep getting longer.\u00a0 This week, Sapphire added a new <em>Vapor-X<\/em> version\u00a0to their HD 7770 <em>GHz OC<\/em> line-up.\u00a0 The family is <em>HD 7770<\/em>.\u00a0 The <em>GHz Edition<\/em> stands for the reference\u00a01000MHz core clock speed, while <em>OverClock<\/em> or <em>OC<\/em> denotes that it is factory overclocked further from reference,\u00a0just as <em>1GB GDDR5<\/em> describes the super-fast vRAM on this card.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0is the first model in the HD 7000 series to come with their exclusive Vapor-X technology &#8211; the <em>Sapphire Vapor-X HD 7770 GHz Edition OC 1GB GDDR5<\/em> model.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0Sapphire\u00a0HD 7770 Vapor-X OC Edition is factory overclocked with core clocks of 1100MHz and memory clocks of 1300MHz (5.2 GB\/s effective) to also deliver excellent performance.<\/p>\n<p>Compared\u00a0to the Sapphire GHz Overclocked editon (below right),\u00a0the Vapor-X editon (below left)\u00a0is factory clocked -50Hz less on the core and +50MHz more on the memory.\u00a0\u00a0 It is going to be interesting to compare their performance, but the biggest difference will come\u00a0 from the cooling used for each card.\u00a0 Two fans tend to cool better and they also tend to be quieter than a single fan.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29769\" title=\"Sapphire-sbs\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Sapphire-sbs.jpg?resize=480%2C374\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Sapphire-sbs.jpg?resize=480%2C374 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Sapphire-sbs-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sapphire\u00a0Technology is the first company to implement cooling for PC graphics cards based on Vapor Chamber Technology and\u00a0they have implemented it successfully in previous products.\u00a0Vapor-X\u00a0cooling\u00a0was first introduced in 2007 with\u00a0the Sapphire\u00a0HD 3870 ATOMIC Edition graphics card\u00a0and it has just been introduced on new\u00a0video cards\u00a0in the HD 7000 series\u00a0by this card.\u00a0 Of course, Vapor-X\u00ae is Sapphire\u2019s exclusive name for this technology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>We are going to focus on the performance of this\u00a0HD 7770 Vapor-X OC edition agaist the\u00a0Sapphire GHz OverClocked edition of the HD 7770. We\u00a0have already\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=28819&amp;all=1\">compared it\u00a0to stock HD 7770<\/a> performance and it was significantly faster.<\/p>\n<p>To fully round out this performance evaluation, we shall also attempt to overclock\u00a0the Vapor-X edition\u00a0further to see if additional gains are possible or if they will even continue to be linear from overclocking to beyond Sapphire&#8217;s factory overclock as the GHz SuperOverclock edition did.\u00a0 It will be interesting to see the performance differences from overclocking the memory versus overclocking the core as these two cards are clocked differently from each other.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Is the Sapphire HD 7770 GHz Overclock Edition and the Vapor-X edition worth about the same price? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>&#8211;Performance vs. Pricing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The feature set of Sapphire&#8217;s HD 7770\u00a0Vapor-X Edition is very impressive as listed on Sapphire&#8217;s chart at the bottom of this page. However, we also need to compare its $149 pricing versus performance and we shall use our last <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=28819&amp;all=1\">evaluation of the Sapphire GHz Overclock edition<\/a> as the standard.<\/p>\n<p>In the last couple of months,\u00a0higher performing cards such as AMD&#8217;s HD 6870 have reached their end of life and\u00a0have been discounted to clear the retail channels. They are now much harder to find than when we\u00a0published our HD 7770 evaluation two months ago.\u00a0 We will attempt to give you a snapshot of today&#8217;s market and where the Sapphire HD 7770 Vapor-X\u00a0edition sits in regards to performance and value especially regarding the GHz OverClocked edition.<\/p>\n<p>We put our Sapphire HD 7770\u00a0Vapor-X editon through its paces\u00a0last week with the very latest Catalyst 12.4 drivers. This driver mostly brought some very minor performance increases over the last WHQL Catalyst driver set.\u00a0 In the past two months, we have also upgraded our Intel CPU platform from Core i7-920\/X58 at 4.2GHz to <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=29402\">Core i7-3770K\/Z77<\/a> at stock clocks of 3.5GHz (3.9GHz with Turbo Boost), so the two CPU platforms are approximately equal.<\/p>\n<p>We now bench with\u00a018 modern games and with 3 synthetic benchmarks, and we generally use 1920&#215;1200 and 1680&#215;1050 resolutions with an emphasis on DX11 games &#8211;\u00a02 DX9, 5 DX10, and 11 DX11 games. Even at the maximum overclock, the fan still did not ramp up loudly and one would not be irritated by even 70% if they used a manual profile.<\/p>\n<p>The card sips power due to using just one 6-pin PCIe slot and takes advantage of the smaller 28nm process. In both cases, we were able to achieve\u00a0a small core overclock,\u00a0and no fan adjustment allowed it to go higher as\u00a0each card\u00a0was still running cool, so we kept the stock fan profiles for them in our testing.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Overclocking<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Overclocking was easily accomplished using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapphireselectclub.com\/ssc\/TriXX\/TriXX.aspx\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.sapphireselectclub.com\/ssc\/TriXX\/TriXX.aspx', 'Sapphire&#8217;s own TriXX software']);\" >Sapphire&#8217;s own TriXX software<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29840\" title=\"TriXX\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/TriXX.jpg?resize=427%2C482\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/TriXX.jpg?resize=427%2C482 427w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/TriXX-265x300.jpg 265w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is actually the first time that we used\u00a0TriXX and it compares favorably with other vendor&#8217;s perhaps more well-known software.\u00a0 It allows some voltage tweaking and we set ours to the maximum when we overclocked.\u00a0 We did not adjust the fan profile as the card stayed cool under maximum load; we would have liked more voltage. \u00a0Surprisingly, Sapphire makes no mention of TriXX on their CD or the Vapor-X box although you can find it on their web site.<\/p>\n<p>We got a very nice overclock on our Vapor-X memory to 1375MHz which was far more than we attempted with our OC Edition.\u00a0Unfortunately, our sample of the Vapor-X HD 7770 could not quite make the 1200MHz that our OC edition managed (1200\/1250MHz)\u00a0so we settled on 1175\/1375MHz as our highest stable overclock in all conditions still using the ultra-silent stock fan profile.<\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0the end user\u00a0wants a bit more overclocking headroom or\u00a0perhaps to stabilize an overclock,\u00a0they\u00a0have the option to increase the fan speeds and still have very quiet gaming.\u00a0 About 60% is where it first starts to become noticeable on either card.\u00a0 Other than that, the dual-fan solution of the Vapor-X is effectively silent during gaming.\u00a0 It is very slightly quieter than the OverClock edition which is already a quiet running card.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vapor-X technology and Noise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vapor-X Technology is covered thoroughly on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapphiretech.com\/VaporX\/VaporX_paper.html\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.sapphiretech.com\/VaporX\/VaporX_paper.html', 'Sapphire&#8217;s web site']);\" >Sapphire&#8217;s web site<\/a>.\u00a0 Vapor Chamber Technology is based on the same principles as heatpipe technology. A liquid coolant &#8211; water in the\u00a0Vapor-X 7770&#8217;s case &#8211;\u00a0is vaporised at a hot surface, the resulting vapor is condensed at a cold surface, and then the cooled liquid is returned to the hot surface\u00a0as controlled by a wick system.<\/p>\n<p>Sapphire&#8217;s Vapor-X flattens the\u00a0entire system into a slim chamber which is designed to contact the GPU.\u00a0 Since the chamber is evacuated to a very low pressure, the water vaporisation process occurs at a much lower temperature than its\u00a0normal boiling point. The\u00a0card can be used in any orientation due to the\u00a0flexible design of the wick system.<\/p>\n<p>Here is how it works from Sapphire&#8217;s own diagram and explanation\u00a0as found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapphiretech.com\/VaporX\/VaporX_paper.html\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.sapphiretech.com\/VaporX\/VaporX_paper.html', 'on their site']);\" >on their site<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.sapphiretech.com\/images\/technology\/vapor-X_work.jpg?resize=600%2C341\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.sapphiretech.com\/images\/technology\/Vapor-X_inside.jpg?resize=286%2C151\" alt=\"\" align=\"right\" border=\"2\" hspace=\"6\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/> Heat source heats Vaporization Wicks.<\/li>\n<li>Working fluid, pure water, is easily vaporized due to the extreme low pressure (&lt;104 Tor or less)<\/li>\n<li>Water vapor moves easily through the vacuum until<\/li>\n<li>It meets the Condensing Wick &#8211; adjacent to the cooled surface &#8211; and turns back to a liquid state.<\/li>\n<li>The liquid is then absorbed by the Transportation Wick by capilary action and moved back towards the Vaporization Wick.<\/li>\n<li>The recycled liquid is then reheated and re-vaporized by the Vaporization Wick and the process repeats.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The heat source is the overclocked and hot\u00a0Cape Verde graphics chip and\u00a0Sapphire&#8217;s\u00a0Vapor-X module is mounted in contact with it as\u00a0its entire\u00a0surface transfers the heat into the\u00a0cooling fins at the same rate, making it more efficient than most copper heatskinks.\u00a0 Two dual-fans then work to transfer cooling air through the fins and to keep the surface of the Vapor-X module cool.<\/p>\n<p>The result is a cool running Vapor-X HD 7770 even when overclocked.\u00a0 And because it is cool-running, the fan&#8217;s rpm can remain lower and thus your card is very quiet even under load as we have noted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Performance Charts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before we look\u00a0specifically at the performance of\u00a0the new Sapphire Vapor-X HD 7770, let&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=28819&amp;page=4\">review the position the\u00a0Sapphire&#8217;s GHz OverClocked edition<\/a>\u00a0 (1150MHz\/1250MHz) occupies versus a reference HD 7770 (1000\/1125MHz), and also overclocked to 1200\/1250MHz.\u00a0\u00a0In that evaluation,\u00a0we also compared the OverClocked Edition against the GTX 550 Ti, the GTX 560 and the GTX 560 Ti, as well as AMD&#8217;s own discounted HD 6870 and the HD 6770 that the HD 7770 is replacing.<\/p>\n<p>The Vapor-X Edition will also\u00a0generally fit in\u00a0where the 1150\/1250MHz HD 7770 fits in (2nd column) to give you an idea of general performance versus the competion.\u00a0 The ranking will not change with the Vapor-X edition although there may be a slight variation in the numbers as we shall see when we compare directly to the GHz OverClock edition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-18.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-28855\" title=\"Untitled-1\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-18.jpg?resize=525%2C373\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-18.jpg?resize=525%2C373 750w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-18-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-27.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-28856\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-27.jpg?resize=525%2C388\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-27.jpg?resize=525%2C388 750w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Untitled-27-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we can see from our charts, most of our games show the HD 7770 losing to last generation&#8217;s now discontnued HD 6870 and to the\u00a0GTX 560. The HD 7770 only comes fairly close to them performance-wise in a few games and we\u00a0can surmize\u00a0that the HD 7770 would be closer to the HD 6850&#8217;s performance. Mostly the HD 7770 comes in ahead of HD 6770, and trades blows with the GTX 550 Ti, the Radeon winning more than it loses. The GTX 560 Ti certainly outclasses\u00a0them but then it is much more expensive.<\/p>\n<p>Now let&#8217;s look very specifically at the performance of the HD 7770 Vapor-X edition versus the performance of the OverClocked edition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vapor-X vs. OC edition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first column represents the Vapor-X HD 7770 GHz OC edition out of the box experience with the latest Catalyst 12.4 drivers. Even at the maximum overclock, the fans still did not ramp up loudly and one would not be irritated by even 70% if they used a manual profile.\u00a0 The Vapor-X edition maintained temperatures in the mid to upper 60sC where the OverClocked edition would edge into the low 70sC.\u00a0 Unfortunately, this made no difference to the overclock because the voltage is rather locked down by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sapphireselectclub.com\/ssc\/TriXX\/TriXX.aspx\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.sapphireselectclub.com\/ssc\/TriXX\/TriXX.aspx', 'TriXX']);\" >TriXX<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The card sips power due to using just one 6-pin PCIe slot and takes advantage of the smaller 28nm process. We were able to achieve only+50MHz more on the Vapor-X&#8217; core\u00a0and no fan adjustment allowed it to go higher as it was still running cool, so we kept the stock fan profile.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: Conclusion--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This has been quite an enjoyable exploration for us in evaluating the Sapphire Vapor-X OC edition versus the GHz OverClock edition. We always like more overclocked performance especially for DX11 gaming and\u00a0we see that these sub-$150 cards also offer great features for a similar price to the HD 5770s at their own launch and we\u00a0have already seen pricing adjustments and game bundles as incentives.<\/p>\n<p>If the end user prefers a slightly quieter card with two fans, the Vapor-X card becomes their first choice.\u00a0 We did not find a lot of headroom difference between either of these cards as they are already well-overclocked from Sapphire.\u00a0 And when these factory-overclocked and warrantied cards are compared to reference cards selling for ten to twenty dollars less, the far more sophisticated cooling system is easily worth the difference.<\/p>\n<p>The HD 7770 has become a better value recently when you consider AMD&#8217;s own current midrange HD 6870 and 6850 are much harder to find and less disconted than when we performed our original evaluation.\u00a0\u00a0 And as replacement for the HD 5770\/HD6770, it affords a decent level of performance especially in the case of the overclocked Sapphire.\u00a0\u00a0 In fact, the Sapphire HD 7770 GHz OC edition also dropped $20 in price to $149 and now includes a bundled game at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102968\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102968', 'NewEgg']);\" >NewEgg<\/a>.\u00a0 At the time of writing, the Vapor-X edition has not yet showed up at either Amazon nor at Newegg and it&#8217;s suggested price is also $149.<\/p>\n<p>Overclocking is the HD 7770&#8217;s saving grace regarding performance and this appears to be true with the entire 7000 series. Best of all, the Sapphire Vapor-X edition offers a guaranteed optimum overclock for only about $10-$20 more than the stock HD 7770s.\u00a0 The HD 7770 is a decent gaming choice with the Sapphire GHz OverClock and Vapor-X OC editions leading the way at the $150 price point.<\/p>\n<p>Of course looking a bit further into the future, we will have to see what Nvidia will bring to the table with their own 28nm new architecture Kepler GPUs.\u00a0 At this point, the HD 7800 and HD 7700 series are unchallenged at 28nm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We see that AMD&#8217;s partners and especially Sapphire, are working on features and unique capabilities to put cool and quiet overclocked HD 7770s on the market to give us great choice. We see quiet cards that can also play DX11.1 games at 1080P and the HD 7770 would also be a very good choice for a\u00a0HTPC.
