{"id":29694,"date":"2012-05-16T18:49:14","date_gmt":"2012-05-16T17:49:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=29694"},"modified":"2012-05-16T18:49:14","modified_gmt":"2012-05-16T17:49:14","slug":"abt-is-live-at-nvidias-gtc-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/abt-is-live-at-nvidias-gtc-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"ABT is Live at Nvidia&#8217;s GTC 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\/\/ <![CDATA[\n                                                          google_ad_client = \"pub-7021221536180758\"; \/* 468x60, created 11\/11\/09 *\/ google_ad_slot = \"1949837292\"; google_ad_width = 468; google_ad_height = 60;\n\/\/ ]]><\/script><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is the third time that ABT has been priviledged to cover Nvidia&#8217;s GPU Technology Conference (GTC 2012), May 14-17, 2012.\u00a0 The very\u00a0first article that this editor wrote for AlienBabelTech covered <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=643&amp;all=1\">Nvision08<\/a> &#8211; which was a combination of LAN party and GPU computing. technology conference.\u00a0 The second time was the following year at <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=11911\">GTC 2009<\/a> when it was held in the Fairmont Hotel, also in San Jose.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/SJ-Convention-Center.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-29696\" title=\"SJ-Convention-Center\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/SJ-Convention-Center.jpg?resize=300%2C201\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/SJ-Convention-Center.jpg?resize=300%2C201 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/SJ-Convention-Center.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well, things have certainly\u00a0grown.\u00a0 Nvidia is using the San Jose Convention Center for their venue &#8211; returning to their original venue for Nvision08.\u00a0 And this time it is also much bigger and greatly expanded to four days\u00a0from a three day conference.\u00a0 The Keynote speech delivered by\u00a0 Nvidia&#8217;s superstar CEO Jensen highlighted the rapid\u00a0growth of GPU computing from humble beginnings.\u00a0 What was really surprising is Nvidia&#8217;s foray into cloud computing &#8211;\u00a0including gaming &#8211;\u00a0where &#8220;convenience&#8221; is the keyword.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Nvidia is also a hardware company, and two major announcements were made regarding the new Kepler GPUs for Tesla and Quadro &#8211; Nvidia&#8217;s professional market to which this conference is directed.\u00a0 First up, is the Tesla K10 &#8211; based on GK104 and available shortly.<\/p>\n<p>K10\u00a0is the Tesla version of the GTX 690 &#8211; a dual GPU with single precision that is directed at Computing and it especially has uses\u00a0for \u00a0oil and gas research, national defense including signal and image processing, and industry.\u00a0\u00a0It will be available this month and a single Tesla K10 accelerator board features two GK104 Kepler GPUs that deliver\u00a0a combined\u00a0performance of 4.58 teraflops of peak single-precision floating point and 320 GB per second memory bandwidth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/TeslaKeplerK10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29697\" title=\"TeslaKeplerK10\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/TeslaKeplerK10.jpg?resize=300%2C210\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Available later in Q4 this year will be Nvidia&#8217;s flagship GPU based on GF110 Kepler.\u00a0 This GPU delivers three times more double precision compared to Fermi architecture-based Tesla products and it supports the Hyper-Q and dynamic parallelism capabilities. The GK110 GPU is expected to be incorporated into the new Titan supercomputer at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olcf.ornl.gov\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.olcf.ornl.gov\/', 'Oak Ridge National Laboratory']);\" >Oak Ridge National Laboratory<\/a> in Tennessee as well as other supercomputers.\u00a0 Here is the chip itself &#8211; and from 60 universities and 4,000 academic papers to 560 universities teaching CUA and 22,500 academic papers in just 4 years!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29705\" title=\"CUDA-by-Nos\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CUDA-by-Nos.jpg?resize=600%2C323\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CUDA-by-Nos.jpg?resize=600%2C323 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CUDA-by-Nos-300x161.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While Nvidia offers support for OpenCL, they say that they\u00a0are not seeing any shift to OpenCL even though OpenCL gives developers a much more\u00a0cross-platform approach.\u00a0No one except\u00a0AMD appears to be\u00a0waiting for the OpenCL tools to evolve or even for Intel to get tools out there for its own multi-core MIC processor.\u00a0\u00a0 Nvidia has created the tools and programmers are excited to use them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Convenience<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the trends noted is that companies no longer supply notebooks or devices for employees any more than than a &#8220;company car&#8221;.\u00a0 The trend is for employees to <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=29574\">Bring\u00a0Your Own Devices (BYOD)<\/a>\u00a0to work.\u00a0 Of course, this means that all of the devices that an employee must use have to be configured by the company&#8217;s IT department and they must be configured <em><strong>to work together securely<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/BYOD.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-29706\" title=\"BYOD\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/BYOD.jpg?resize=300%2C201\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/BYOD.jpg?resize=300%2C201 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/BYOD.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nvidia is going to be at the forefront of this with their new initiative with Kepler &#8211; the first GPU that can be &#8220;virtualized&#8221; to drive cloud computing.\u00a0 Cloud computing is simply convenient.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CLOUD.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29707\" title=\"CLOUD\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CLOUD.jpg?resize=480%2C419\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CLOUD.jpg?resize=480%2C419 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CLOUD-300x261.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is a great advantage to be able to use any device seamlessly and the important thing is that excellent graphics can be delivered to any device &#8211; now with the same amount of latency that a gaming console has.\u00a0 This has application for business including gaming.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/InputLag.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29708\" title=\"InputLag\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/InputLag.jpg?resize=480%2C322\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/InputLag.jpg?resize=480%2C322 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/InputLag-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kepler is Nvidia&#8217;s first &#8220;Virtualized GPU&#8221; which allows end users to use any device from anywhere allowing the same excellent graphics on all devices.\u00a0 This allows data centers to be driven from Kepler GPUs as the applications will reside in the cloud no longer requiring the applications to reside on individual devices.<\/p>\n<p>The PC then becomes an application.\u00a0 This was highlighted by Nvidia&#8217;s using Citrix as an example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/PC-as-an-App.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29709\" title=\"PC-as-an-App\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/PC-as-an-App.jpg?resize=480%2C318\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/PC-as-an-App.jpg?resize=480%2C318 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/PC-as-an-App-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A practical way this can be done for business was illustrated when Jensen invited Grady Cofer of Industrial Light &amp; Magic on stage.\u00a0 The problem that Grady explained exists now when he tries to demo movie clips for the director.\u00a0 No matter how many shots he loads up his PC with to demonstrate clips, there is never enough flexibility nor storage on his machine.\u00a0 However, by using Nvidia&#8217;s GRID, he is able to instantly access his server and do anything that he could do from his own office &#8211; remotely.<\/p>\n<p>He demonstrated how he might do this with the upcoming &#8220;Battleship&#8221; and also with &#8220;The Avengers&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Avengers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29710\" title=\"Avengers\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Avengers.jpg?resize=480%2C299\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Avengers.jpg?resize=480%2C299 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Avengers-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, gaming can also benefit by having the application reside in the cloud.\u00a0 No longer do gamers have to wait to download anything.\u00a0 They just get connected and start playing &#8211;
