He&#8217;s been playing me from minute one.\u201d<\/em> <strong>\u2013 Jack, \u201cSpeed,\u201d 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century Fox (1994)<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>One of the reasons we don\u2019t play videogames is that our attention tends to wander \u2026 <em>look, there goes another flock of ducks!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Listening to Jen-Hsun Huang, the boss at Nvidia, give his impression of the changing world during the keynote at the company\u2019s recent GPU \u2013 graphic processing unit \u2013 Technology Conference (GTC), we should have been focusing on how the breathtaking technology is making videogames and animation totally look and feel like real life.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n<p>We slipped right back to National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) memories because GPUs are only good if you have tons of data to process and do something with.<\/p>\n<p>That made us think of the new movie\/TV\/content shift.<\/p>\n<p>To make Huang\u2019s new GPU encoding engines and digital video pipelines more than just cute technology, you needed content \u2026 really bad, heavy content.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intense Capture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s probably why Red\u2019s new 5K camera was such a hot attraction at NAB.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29744\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Untitled-22.jpg?resize=502%2C181\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Untitled-22.jpg?resize=502%2C181 628w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Untitled-22-300x107.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Red 5K \u2013 <\/strong><em>The new Red 5K camera created a lot of excitement at NAB, even though most of the movie work today is just slowly learning how to get the most from the company\u2019s 4K camera. The creative power just keeps getting better as the industry finds new ways to produce, disseminate, monetize their content<\/em>. <strong>Source \u2013 Red Digital Cinema<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sure, it\u2019s going to replace the 4K that is gaining widespread usage for such films as the new \u201c<strong><em>Hobbitt\u201d movie<\/em><\/strong>. But replacing your own products is the way <strong>profitable <\/strong>folks stay one step ahead of the competition.<\/p>\n<p>As Jack noted, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Just keep looking straight ahead.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Still, the 4K is certainly no slouch.<\/p>\n<p>The film crew is using the cameras to shoot raw content at 48 frames per second (fps), six days a week. That\u2019s about 10TB of content\u2026a day!<\/p>\n<p>Big pixel piles are needed to make your entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>You may not recall the stir when Waterworld was introduced back in 1995.<\/p>\n<p>Every trade show booth, every big new TV set showed the movie so you could see the sharp definition and shadows of the water.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29745\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Untitled-32.jpg?resize=352%2C235\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Untitled-32.jpg?resize=352%2C235 352w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Untitled-32-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Wet Wonder \u2013 <\/strong><em>The ocean waves, ripples were almost hypnotic for those of us who focused on the production, post-production work Universal\u2019s team delivered with the \u201c<strong>Waterworld\u201d<\/strong> DVD. Funny, 1995 doesn\u2019t seem that long ago.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Moving water is a very difficult thing to encode properly and even tougher to decode.<\/p>\n<p>Remember back when it was the content on a DVD and it was awe-inspiring!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But with 4K, we\u2019re talking about an even bigger pile of pixels.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29746\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Untitled-42.jpg?resize=419%2C238\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Untitled-42.jpg?resize=419%2C238 419w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Untitled-42-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 419px) 100vw, 419px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Video Size \u2013 <\/strong><em>Video content post-production has hit a number of major video intensity, quality milestones in recent years and the industry\u2019s technology doesn\u2019t show any sign of slowing down.<\/em> <strong>Source &#8211; Extremetech<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s why Hollywood, and any videographer who is concerned about quality, loves to hear just how far Huang and his crew can push the GPU and encoding technology.<\/p>\n<p>Those innocent looking chips and hardworking software enable just the right balance of size, quality, compatibility and quality to create the video files you ultimately watch on the big screen, home screen, mobile screen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Real Work<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sure, there\u2019s a lot more work and talent needed to deliver content; but we want to bore you with the inner workings of really good video production. Let\u2019s just say it takes a lot of blood, sweat, time, talent and storage.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the producer\/ director uses old-fashioned 35mm film (lots still do), they convert it to digital because all of the creative work is done in digital.<\/p>\n<p>Talking about the creative process, Howard Payne noted, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Poor people are crazy, Jack. I&#8217;m eccentric.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Although movie and TV show credits may list Universal, Disney, Fox on the credits, but very little of the work is done in their house or on their equipment.<\/p>\n<p>As Howard Payne pointed out, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Now this is about my money.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The digital data is ingested and managed by the owners. They may pay the bills and take the profit, but the work is done by folks located around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>Heck, they were working in the cloud before there was a cloud.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Global Work Team<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They shoot somewhere and the work is done by specialists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29747\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Untitled-52.jpg?resize=564%2C311\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Untitled-52.jpg?resize=564%2C311 627w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Untitled-52-300x165.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 564px) 100vw, 564px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Cloud Production \u2013 <\/strong><em>From the moment movies and TV Shows are shot the work enters the cloud, making it fast and easy for the industry to economically taking advantage of the very best production and post-production talents for specific segments of the project, regardless of where they are located. <\/em><strong>Source &#8211; Transformation<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s across town or on another continent, these independent talents edit, post produce, enhance, encode and transcode the video content jointly and independently&#8211;often in real-time.<\/p>\n<p>There was a short period of time when they were moving the production process around the globe on physical disks but that was expensive and time-consuming.<\/p>\n<p>The young executive commented on the routine, <em>\u201cThe light&#8217;s on but you never know, it really might be broken.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re talking Petabytes of content; but they\u2019ve gotten really good about moving huge packets around without losing a pixel.<\/p>\n<p>Because time to market for a movie or show is so critical, post-production people rely on high- speed computers that often incorporate expensive, high-performance Nvidia boards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Production Storage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And the systems\/work require more than JBOD (just a bunch of drives), which was why folks like OWC (Other World Computing) received a lot of attention at NAB.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29748\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Untitled-62.jpg?resize=398%2C226\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Untitled-62.jpg?resize=398%2C226 398w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Untitled-62-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 398px) 100vw, 398px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Fast Throughput <em>\u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>OWC\u2019s new Jupiter mini-SAS storage solutions come in both tower and rack configurations that can be quickly and economically expanded to keep pace with the post-production\u2019s teams\u2019 requirements while handling all the video throughput with ease.<\/em> <strong>Source &#8211; ArsTechnica<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They showed off their new Jupiter line of mini-SAS (serial attached SCSI) 4-8 bay desktop towers and 8-16 bay rack enclosures.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the storage budget and speed required, post-production people needs; the Jupiter systems can be populate with SAS or SATA (serial ATA) drives; and even SSDs (solid state drives).<\/p>\n<p>The storage systems deliver the throughput performance (24-48Gbps) that people who are racing against the clock need to get their work done and delivered on time, on budget.<\/p>\n<p>The new units excited Jack because he was heard to say, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Look, you&#8217;ve got to let me have one.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To you, it may be just a two-hour movie or half-hour TV show (23 minutes after you take out all the ads) may be just a mental escape to you, but not to the producers, directors, investors.<\/p>\n<p>All of that raw data, work in progress and the final film\/show requires Petabytes of rich, expensive, valuable content.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29749\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Untitled-72.jpg?resize=269%2C194\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Terabytes to Petabytes \u2013 <\/strong><em>Video content keeps expanding and expanding as technology finds newer, better, faster ways to add more pixels to the images. Once the huge files are complete though content owners don\u2019t want them just sitting around on a bench or in the cloud.<\/em> <strong>Source &#8211; Healthlink<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Petabytes of video that doesn\u2019t just sit around.<\/p>\n<p>Petabytes they\u2019re not anxious to leave on someone\u2019s cloud \u2026 somewhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Creative Recycling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s content that they can use, reuse, repurpose and resell again and again.<\/p>\n<p>Content creators\/producers find the concept of archiving boring \u2026 essential, but boring.<\/p>\n<p>They care about preserving and accessing the material.
