THAT&#8217;s the problem.\u201d<\/em><strong>\u2013 President Lindberg, <em>\u201cThe Fifth Element,\u201d<\/em> Gaumont Studios (1997)<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><\/strong><br \/>\nCloud.\u00a0\u00a0 Cloud.\u00a0\u00a0 Cloud.\u00a0\u00a0 Cloud.<\/p>\n<p>There, aren\u2019t you excited?<\/p>\n<p>Just saying the word is enough to make the hair stand up on the back of an IT executive\u2019s neck.<\/p>\n<p>It makes pessimists scream in pain \u2026 security folks scream in terror \u2026 pragmatists wait and see \u2026 VCs\u00a0 holler chasing the new pots of gold \u2026 kids yawn.<\/p>\n<p>Us?\u00a0 We use the cloud as little as possible, but we\u2019re calmly pragmatic about the whole thing.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, it just isn\u2019t a technology breakthrough!<\/p>\n<p>Cloud computing\/cloud storage is the same-o same-o.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been doing large-scale computing and storage for years. At its basic level, that\u2019s the infrastructure and services the cloud delivers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New Buzz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The rest?\u00a0 Marketing, spin!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-30044\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-2.jpg?resize=565%2C338\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-2.jpg?resize=565%2C338 628w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-2-300x179.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 565px) 100vw, 565px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>New Clothes \u2013 <\/strong><em>While cloud computing is far from new, the new name makes it feel like a brave new concept and an opportunity for a lot of companies \u2013 new and old. Today\u2019s platform puts significant capabilities in the hands of individuals and has enabled organization to offer more applications, more services<\/em> \u2013 <strong>Source &#8211; IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now we have millions of apps\/services and billions of users taking advantage of the cloud, mobile devices and social media.<\/p>\n<p>As the technologies advanced they got more powerful, more expensive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone\u201d has a cellphone and they\u2019re upgrading to smartphones and newer\/sexier smartphones in record numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Folks have their laptop\/notebook computer and an increasing number have an iPad\/tablet.<\/p>\n<p>All of them touch, use, store stuff in the cloud.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Adult Gadget Ownership (2006-2012)<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30045\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-3.jpg?resize=535%2C392\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-3.jpg?resize=535%2C392 535w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-3-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u00a0I<\/strong><strong>ndispensible \u2013 <\/strong><em>While desktop usage has slipped slightly, laptop computers have picked up the pace along with smartphones which an increasing number of people use as their sole platform. Tablets are also slowly gaining traction for both personal and business use.<\/em><strong>Source \u2013 Pew Internet Survey<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But the cloud has become more sophisticated over time because we have:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Private clouds designed for and accessed by a single company with internally shared resources that aren\u2019t open to the public<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Public clouds that are open to almost everyone for a fee or free \u2013 think Google +, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Drive, DropBox<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hybrid clouds tailored for a specific organization that include both public and private services<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who is anyone is offering one or more flavors of cloud service today.<\/p>\n<p>General Munro knew how to handle the situation when he said<em>, \u201cDon&#8217;t-don&#8217;t worry, sir. I know my man. He&#8217;ll calm things down.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30046\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=528%2C328\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=528%2C328 528w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-4-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>\u00a0<strong>Clouds Galore \u2013 <\/strong><em>While industry leaders have a complete cloud computing\/storage strategy, it doesn\u2019t slow down new firms from cropping up funded by VC money and a lot of promise. The any device, anywhere solution, which has opened up new opportunities for hackers and cybercriminals, has also brought new dangers for businesses, consumers.<\/em><strong>Source &#8211; IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>IBM, which has been around and thriving for 100 years, views cloud computing as just a new way for IT consumption and delivery of services.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day it doesn\u2019t matter if it\u2019s delivered over the Internet or a company&#8217;s intranet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leveraging Resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Private clouds simply pool resources, leverage virtualization and deliver IT services. The trick is dynamic provisioning and a self-service portal.<\/p>\n<p>They save the company money in the form of using less electricity, HVAC, capital expenditures and labor.<\/p>\n<p>The public cloud is the one that gets most folks excited because so many people use it every day; and when something bad happens, it happens in the public cloud.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It doesn\u2019t slow our kids down because they, and everyone else, keep the public clouds busy and profitable.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-30047\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=564%2C410\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=564%2C410 627w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-5-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 564px) 100vw, 564px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Its Overwhelming \u2013 <\/strong><em>Intel crystallized the overpowering impact that global use of the web and social media have on the industry\u2019s needs and potential. By 2015, the number of networked devices will be more than two times the population (7 B). That\u2019s a lot of storage.<\/em><strong>Source &#8211; Intel<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>All of that stuff \u2013 and a whole lot more &#8211; sits out there for anyone to borrow, scrape personal information from, use as they see fit (read, really read the service agreement you signed).<\/p>\n<p>Of course just because it\u2019s laid out there for the world doesn\u2019t mean businesses and individuals aren\u2019t focused on the security\/privacy dangers.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30048\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-6.jpg?resize=373%2C202\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-6.jpg?resize=373%2C202 373w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-6-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 373px) 100vw, 373px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Security, Privacy \u2013 <\/strong><em>While consumers worldwide are obviously worried about the cost of the devices they purchase and use, there is always a nagging concern about what lies over the next hill, around the next corner. The security of your data and your need for privacy, even in an open environment, are of major concern as you move ahead. <\/em><strong>Source &#8211; Edelman<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>John Chambers, chairman of Cisco Systems, recently called cloud computing a <em>&#8220;security<\/em><em>nightmare&#8221;<\/em> that <em>&#8220;can&#8217;t be handled in traditional ways.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>MIT\u2019s Ron Rivest was a little less subtle and said, <em>&#8220;Cloud computing should be replaced by swamp computing because then maybe people would examine the companies\u2019 security\/privacy claims more closely with a healthy dose of skepticism.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Ya think?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true that hackers, whackers and cyberthieves can \u2013 and do \u2013 break in to steal vital information.<\/p>\n<p>As Zorg complained, <em>\u201cEmpty. The opposite of full. This case is supposed to be full!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Then too, the cloud provider can mishandle the day or be forced to turn it over in response to a subpoena request.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Darn!!!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But service providers are quick \u2013 and correct \u2013 in pointing out that they are more reliable, more secure because they focus a lot of time, effort and talent on keeping their sites safe, secure and reliable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attention to Details<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Seriously, did you download, install, test the last group of fixes from Microsoft on Patch Tuesday?<\/p>\n<p>How about Apple\u2019s last group?\u00a0 Ooppss sorry, the Mac OS doesn\u2019t have those problems.<\/p>\n<p>Then too, there are the millions of mislaid USB drives, USB keys, tens of thousands of stolen\/lost laptops, hundreds of thousands\/thousands of lost\/stolen smartphones.<\/p>\n<p>Just think how much company, personal\/private date ends up in the wrong hands because of you.<\/p>\n<p>Heck, even the priest said, <em>\u201cI will pass the knowledge on, until you return!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But the industry has long said that if you want a perfectly secure system, disconnect it from all external sources, lock it in a safe.<\/p>\n<p>Want 100 percent privacy \u2026 just think it, don\u2019t say it, don\u2019t write it down.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30049\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-7.jpg?resize=273%2C192\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Trust Me \u2013 <\/strong><em>When corporations and individuals are using the cloud for virtual computing as well as for storing mission-critical, sensitive, private and personal data; the cloud service\u2019s greatest asset is its reputation \u00a0for safeguarding content and individuals. Once trust is lost, customers stampede for the door.<\/em><strong>Source &#8211; unbounce<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At some point, it boils down to how much you trust someone else to protect your data and not exploit it or allow it to be exploited.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another Worry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Actually, we\u2019re not real concerned about the cloud places where we stuff our stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Want to keep yourself up at night?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30050\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-8.jpg?resize=488%2C280\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-8.jpg?resize=488%2C280 488w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-8-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 488px) 100vw, 488px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Governmental Concern \u2013 <\/strong><em>While people are most concerned about bad guys hacking and stealing information they have stored in the cloud, more than a few people have voiced a concern about all of the information individuals and companies store in the clouds that can also be easily monitored by governmental agencies and organizations around the globe.
