The issue usually starts with the folks who are leading the social media marketing charge\u2026the ad\/publicity folks.<\/p>\n<p>Social media was never developed to be an ad\/publicity platform.<\/p>\n<p>It just doesn\u2019t fit the conventional thought\/action processes of these marketing folks. Social media isn\u2019t something marketers\/communicators can control; and gawd, does that confuse them.<\/p>\n<p>Since they can\u2019t control or measure it, they use soft metrics.<\/p>\n<p>You know<em>, \u201cLook at all the Likes we got.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Not certain what that means since we all like lots of things.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, maybe not cauliflower and broccoli but still\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The question is do all those Likes translate into marketers\/communicators holy grail\u2026marketing ROI?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30252\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-22.jpg?resize=362%2C358\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-22.jpg?resize=362%2C358 362w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-22-300x296.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>More than ROI \u2013 <\/strong><em>Marketing folks love to measure the return on investment (ROI) of their advertising, publicity expenditures. But social media is rapidly changing the landscape for companies large and small. Sometimes you have to focus on what\u2019s important for the long-term growth and market perception of the company. It\u2019s all bottom-line, but it\u2019s all different tomorrow. <\/em><strong>Source \u2013 Anderson Analytics<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Albert Einstein was right when it comes to social media ads\/publicity, <em>\u201cNot everything that can be counted counts and not everything that counts can be counted.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Counting Likes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s certainly true of social media because it\u2019s so much more than Likes.<\/p>\n<p>Some folks are starting to admit that they know social media has buzz; but they just haven\u2019t been able to figure out how to monetize it for their company, their product, themselves.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30253\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-32.jpg?resize=378%2C560\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-32.jpg?resize=378%2C560 378w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-32-202x300.jpg 202w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Don\u2019t Ask the Expert \u2013 <\/strong><em>The easiest thing for management to do is to hire a social media expert (advertising or PR) and turn the job \u2013 and their future \u2013 over to them. Social media, social technologies are changing, being refined every day. It\u2019s probably best to follow Nike\u2019s advice, \u201cJust Do It.\u201d <\/em>\u2013 <strong>Source \u2013 Equation Research<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As Ford said following GM\u2019s public admission (they love to stick it to the guy down the road), <em>&#8220;We&#8217;ve found Facebook ads to be very effective when strategically combined with engagement, great content and innovative ways of storytelling, rather than treating them as a straight advertising buy.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The truth is social media communications requires more work than most organizations \u2013 and most communicators &#8211; are willing to invest.<\/p>\n<p>GM finally figured out (Ford said they already knew) that Likes don\u2019t usually translate into click-throughs and sales.<\/p>\n<p>When they did produce sales, OMG they were very expensive!<\/p>\n<p>But marketing\/ad\/publicist folks shouldn\u2019t fret because there are digital places where the counts count \u2013 third-party (or your own) newsletters, web sites, blogs, search engines.\u00a0 And don\u2019t forget the real media \u2013 online\/print media, radio, TV.<\/p>\n<p>If the site has 10s-100s of thousands of blog members and a few thousand of folks who come there to get news, information about cars, games, performance systems, whatever; No one said it was going to be easy; but if it were, they wouldn\u2019t need you to be involved. Anyone could do it.<\/em> <strong>Source:\u00a0 IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A social business is about a million miles from \u201cbusiness as usual,\u201d which is why so many organizations find it difficult &#8212; and painful &#8212; to fully embrace.<\/p>\n<p>It involves a new focus internally and externally.<\/p>\n<p>It means the company has to honestly:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Be transparent<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Engaged with customers in an ongoing relationship<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Distribute, share power<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Distribute problem solving<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Have people willing to be leadership coaches, not controls<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Empower employees to contribute<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Develop an interdependent ecosystem of partners<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Deliver service when, where, how the customer wants<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Enable customers to define products\/services<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Anticipate customer needs<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heavy Lifting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No that\u2019s not just work, that\u2019s a helluva\u2019 lot of work.<\/p>\n<p>Work that means all of the tactics have to become an integral part of the organization\u2019s complete strategy for being in business\u2026 not just marketing, advertising, publicity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30255\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-62.jpg?resize=457%2C310\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-62.jpg?resize=457%2C310 457w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-62-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 457px) 100vw, 457px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Preparing for Tomorrow \u2013 <\/strong><em>While social media still suffers from the conventional thinking of being a marketing opportunity, it will quickly morph into a work\/communications environment for everyone inside and outside the company. When that happens \u2013 and it will \u2013 there will be no turning back.<\/em> <strong>Source \u2013 CMO Council<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>None of this is a totally new concept.<\/p>\n<p>McKinsey and IDC have been advocating and studying\/promoting the concept of fully integrated internal\/external companies for years.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to take maximum advantage of social media and social technologies to work with customers and partners to blur the boundaries of the company.<\/p>\n<p>IDC and McKinsey report that firms are slowly evolving to social businesses as they see positive results with every technology, social media activity they implement \u2013 internally and externally.<\/p>\n<p>These extended organizations are seeing performance improvements across all of their stakeholder groups&#8211;especially in their communications with customers and integration with partners and suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>When employees\u2019 work is highly integrated with social media, things just get better.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, research shows that market leadership \u2013 the ultimate performance measure \u2013significantly improves when day-to-day work seamlessly blends with social tools.<\/p>\n<p>Even organizations that are in survival (or stubborn adherence) mode are dipping their corporate toes in a more professional manner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30256\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-72.jpg?resize=465%2C406\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-72.jpg?resize=465%2C406 465w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-72-300x261.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 465px) 100vw, 465px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Social Change <em>\u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>Social media was the first step in turning companies into social businesses that will impact everyone inside\/outside the company. Organizations that are focused on change and advancement will move into a new more exciting space for people open to listening, communicating and working together.<\/em> <strong>Source \u2013 McKinsey<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They\u2019re using social media to scan the world outside for new ideas and carefully using those that help them manage projects, develop plans and allocate precious resources (talent).<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re starting slowly with small efforts and building on each success.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brave New World<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the beginning of a whole new business world with processes, procedures, responsibility, accountability and bragging rights spread throughout the organization, well beyond an ad person or publicist.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, that means cultural and hierarchical mindsets will have to change dramatically as boundaries among employees, vendors, customers blur; teams organize themselves and data- driven decisions become more important.<\/p>\n<p>Senior management will have to lead by example, by thinking strategically as to how they are going to use social technologies in their business.<\/p>\n<p>By helping his\/her organization navigate the new environment, they will forge stronger links with their outside stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>There definitely seems to be a lot of competitive benefits in using social technologies to improve their internal processes.<\/p>\n<p>Changing a lifetime of what people \u2013 and you \u2013 have known as \u201cbusiness management control\u201d isn\u2019t an easy task.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30258\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-82.jpg?resize=446%2C372\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-82.jpg?resize=446%2C372 446w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Untitled-82-300x250.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>The Future Lies Ahead \u2013 <\/strong><em>Sometimes it\u2019s difficult to impossible to see what tomorrow promises companies, their products and their people.
