But it goes far above and beyond the basics,\u00a0featuring an easily accessible external HDD\/SSD dock right on the top of the case for the ultimate in convenience for daily use.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Overseer RX-I is also priced thirty dollars less than the Chaser MK-I as it has single-color\u00a0blue fan LEDs instead of variable tri-colors, and its side panels slide on in the traditional manner instead of using\u00a0a swing-out panel.\u00a0 The Overseer RX-I&#8217;s suggested price is $139.99 compared with the Chaser MK-I&#8217;s suggested selling price of $169.99.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">You can find the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133194\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133194', 'RX-I at Newegg at time of writing shipped for $114.99 after $15 mail-in-rebate']);\" >RX-I at Newegg at time of writing shipped for $114.99 after $15 mail-in-rebate<\/a> compared to the Chaser MK-I for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133191&amp;Tpk=chaser%20mk-i\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133191&amp;Tpk=chaser%20mk-i', '$139.99 after a $15 mail-in-rebate']);\" >$139.99 after a $15 mail-in-rebate<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0In comparison, the smaller Thermaltake Element G oversized mid-tower, which we loved and reviewed <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/thermaltake-element-g-case\/all\/1\">here<\/a>, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133086\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133086', '$140 plus $15 shipping at Newegg']);\" >$140 plus $15 shipping at Newegg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To its credit, the Overseer\u00a0RX-I has taller\u00a0feet than the Chaser MK-I and they are\u00a0rubber-covered\u00a0so they do not scratch surfaces.\u00a0\u00a0Also, the Overseer&#8217;s bezels do not come off quite as easily when you try to move it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Although the Overseer\u00a0is very slightly smaller than the Chaser, the fans are the same size and the airflow is the same; a slight variation being that the Chaser&#8217;s front fan is inside the chassis itself, while the Overseer&#8217;s is outside the chassis, hidden by\u00a0the front panel.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Although the Overseer\u00a0has a\u00a0less complex control panel than the Chaser,\u00a0each\u00a0set up is nearly identically between the two cases and a system builder\u00a0can use the same cooling and expect similar results.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cooling-system.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31072\" title=\"Cooling-system\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cooling-system.jpg?resize=550%2C596\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cooling-system.jpg?resize=550%2C596 550w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cooling-system-276x300.jpg 276w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Overseer RX-I has superb airflow partly thanks to 3 large fans, with options to install\u00a0more for extreme hardware. In an\u00a0optional watercooled configuration as tested and as pictured by Thermaltake&#8217;s own professionally rendered image above, there are 200mm each front intake and top exhaust fans, and a 140mm rear exhaust fan.\u00a0 There is no side case fan included\u00a0although\u00a0an\u00a0optional 200mm Thermaltake fan\u00a0is available for\u00a0purchase.<\/p>\n<p>We received an Overseer RX-I from Thermaltake a few months ago and we have been using it extensively with our flagship Ivy Bridge system.\u00a0 We have evaluated Noctua&#8217;s flagship CPU air cooler as well as\u00a0watercooling\u00a0with three Z77 motherboards &#8211; from a mATX Gigabyte board to a full-sized ECS board and finally to an oversize z77 EVGA FTW ATX plus motherboard that easily accomodates Quad-SLI.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-31033\" title=\"runw-noctua2\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/runw-noctua2.jpg?resize=300%2C292\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/runw-noctua2.jpg?resize=300%2C292 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/runw-noctua2.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since we are extreme, we originally <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=28241\">tested the Chaser MK-I tower<\/a> with our overclocked FX-8150 at 4.6GHz and HD 6970-X3 Tri-Fire (HD 6970+HD 6990 with all three GPUs at 880\/1375MHz) with only its stock 3 case fans running to keep an extreme system cool, and\u00a0it passed!\u00a0 We also tested further\u00a0by adding\u00a0another\u00a0HD\u00a06970\u00a0for QuadFire-X4 and suggested that\u00a0the\u00a0optional 200mm\u00a0side case fan would be a good idea for 24\/7 use.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31026\" title=\"ecs-Water-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ecs-Water-5.jpg?resize=384%2C466\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ecs-Water-5.jpg?resize=384%2C466 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ecs-Water-5-246x300.jpg 246w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ecs-Water-5-842x1024.jpg 842w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Overseer RX-I most recently kept our GTX 680 and GTX 690 running cool as we pushed the overclock on our Core i7-3770K to 5.0GHz with Thermaltake&#8217;s Water2.0 Pro!\u00a0 The Thermaltake\u00a0Overseer RX-I will easily accommodate the largest graphics cards including the reference version of the HD 6990, to over 12 inches.<\/p>\n<p><span>The aim of <\/span>Thermaltake<span> is to give<\/span> their consumers value and functionality with a\u00a0spacious &#8220;everything included&#8221; full tower.\u00a0 It features a large scratch-resistant plastic window as well as a mesh side panel that shows off its all-<span>black<\/span> interior and your hardware. The Overseer RX-I boasts much larger dimensions than any mid tower case and we found it really easy to fit our hands around the hardware that we installed inside.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Why <\/strong><\/span>Thermaltake<span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Thermaltake considers themselves to be a relatively &#8220;new&#8221; company that formed in 1999 although that is more than twenty two years ago. They have been at the forefront of creating new and exciting products since the time where most computer users were provided with little to no choices for components that may seem irrelevant, but in reality are crucial to the performance of a PC. The Overseer RX-I has the same inside dimensions and it\u00a0is set up basically the same as the Chaser MK-I which already passed our extreme cooling test with overclocked FX-8150 and HD 6970-X4 Quad-Fire.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/QuadFire-X41.jpg?resize=300%2C230\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0If\u00a0an end user is going to use\u00a0three video cards featuring four very hot-running GPUs in such close proximety to each other, we would highly recommend installing an optional 200mm side case fan.\u00a0 However, there\u00a0were no thermal\u00a0issues whatsoever\u00a0using two video cards featuring three GPUs as in HD 6970-X3 Tri-Fire and our overclocked FX-8150 in the identically set up <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=28241\">Chaser MK-I as in our February evaluation<\/a>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/TriFire-X3-1.jpg?resize=300%2C296\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>The \u201cLook\u201d and the Interior<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The first thing we note about the Thermaltake Overseer RX-I is its look.\u00a0It is definitely not a kid\u2019s PC\u00a0and is it more conservative-looking than the Chaser MK-I. It has four USB ports and sound inputs and outputs, and the top metal and plastic grills\u00a0serve\u00a0both\u00a0for aesthetics and also as\u00a0dust filters, which is especially important\u00a0when they are used for intake fans.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31015\" title=\"chassis--front\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassis-front.jpg?resize=276%2C617\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassis-front.jpg?resize=276%2C617 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassis-front-134x300.jpg 134w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassis-front-457x1024.jpg 457w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 276px) 100vw, 276px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Overseer RX-I case is spacious inside.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31017\" title=\"chassis-open-side\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassis-open-side.jpg?resize=480%2C496\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassis-open-side.jpg?resize=480%2C496 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassis-open-side-290x300.jpg 290w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassis-open-side-990x1024.jpg 990w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is room for\u00a0a total of\u00a03 optical drives in the provided tool-less bays as well as\u00a0five hard drives cages, one less than the Chaser MK-I. Running the 2 largest fans&#8217; blue-colored LEDs\u00a0are attractive, day or night.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31012\" title=\"chassi-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassi-2.jpg?resize=480%2C551\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassi-2.jpg?resize=480%2C551 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassi-2-261x300.jpg 261w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassi-2-891x1024.jpg 891w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The paint job of the Overseer RX-I chassis is outstanding &#8211; inside and out &#8211; and there are no imperfections that we could find. Neither the paint nor the clear plastic of the side panel are easy to scratch. Hand prints wipe off easily and we give very high marks to its exterior and interior and we really like its look.\u00a0 It has recently become our favorite case with just a few caveats as we compare to the Chaser MK-I and the Element G before it.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>The Features:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Features of the Thermaltake Overseer RX-I include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Excellent airflow with 3 large, dual-speed fans with dust filters covering every intake that counts<\/li>\n<li>An aggressive looking gamer&#8217;s case with a variable LED lightshow<\/li>\n<li>Well-finished black interior and exterior<\/li>\n<li>Superior cooling performance including retaining holes for watercooling<\/li>\n<li>Well-managed interior space for extra long video cards<\/li>\n<li>Excellent cable management system<\/li>\n<li>Easy customization for adding additional cooling fans<\/li>\n<li>Tool-free design<\/li>\n<li>User friendly<\/li>\n<li>Three year warranty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Cases and Cooling<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The PC case has evolved over the years from from its original passively-cooled closed white or beige box. All of the hardware has become hotter and hotter over the years as evidenced by the growing capacity of power supply units &#8211; especially for gamers.\u00a0 As PC cooling has developed over the years, so have cases to meet the growing cooling needs.<\/p>\n<p>PC\u00a0hardware outputs all of its heat into the case and there must be a good way to transfer and remove this heat or else the inside case temperature rises. In turn, a hot case increases the temperature of the hardware inside, leading to their possibly shortened lifespan or instability if overclocked. When we tested the Chaser MK-I, we needed two PSUs for a total of 1625W &#8211; more wattage than a typical consumer space heater uses!<\/p>\n<p>Cooling thus becomes critical to an overclocker. If we lower the case temperature, we lower the hardware temperature and generally we can overclock better with cooler components. The latest PC cases come equipped with fans that intake and exhaust large volumes of air, thereby lowering the temperature of the hardware inside. Many modern cases come standard with an intake fan and an exhaust fan. Even more extreme cases such as Thermaltake&#8217;s Overseer RX-I will have these fans as well as adding fans or provisions for them to the top, bottom and case sides.<\/p>\n<p>The Thermaltake&#8217;s Overseer RX-I big top 200 mm fan exhausts hot air from your case which otherwise tends to pool at the top of a case. This top fan can move a lot of air. There are provisions for another 200 mm fan or you can use the space for a watercooling system&#8217;s radiator as we have.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31025\" title=\"ecs-Water-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ecs-Water-4.jpg?resize=480%2C362\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ecs-Water-4.jpg?resize=480%2C362 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ecs-Water-4-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>With watercooling, there is a choice to install the fans and radiators inside the case: in\u00a0the drive bays; at the back of the case replacing the back 140mm exhaust fan; or as we have installed it, at the top of the case.\u00a0 Installing it in the top of the case means that you will lose the top two slots for optical drives as we had to move our DVD drive to the bottom (third) slot.<\/p>\n<p>We have the air coming in from outside the top of the case\u00a0and cooling the water for our overclocked Core i7-3770K and exhausting above the GTX 680 where the front 200mm fan provides enough of a draft to\u00a0move the hot CPU-heated air out the top and back fan exhausts.\u00a0 In this way, we keep two fans as intake and two as exhaust.\u00a0 Another good option is to\u00a0buy an optional 200mm side case fan\u00a0so as to bring\u00a0air into the case and reverse the flow of the watercooling fans so air\u00a0can be\u00a0exhausted through the radiator out of the case at the top.<\/p>\n<p>Installing an optional\u00a0200mm side case ColorShift fan\u00a0might also\u00a0look good\u00a0for a case\u00a0lightshow as well as\u00a0be functional for extreme graphics. The top section has wire dust screens since you have the option to install a watercooling unit or another big fan, but we would have preferred a finer mesh to keep dust out of the watercooler radiator\u00a0better.<\/p>\n<p>An important thing that a PC builder will appreciate \u2013 besides the Overseer RX-I\u2019s reasonable price, ability to customize it and good looks \u2013 is its attention to detail. The very worst thing a builder will encounter is sharp edges inside a case and there were none that we found in building this one. And never &#8211; ever &#8211; grab the cheapest budget case that you can find.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to consider that a well-designed case properly holds the components in exact relationship to each other; there is no mismatch or straining anything anywhere to add or remove hardware. And we give high marks to the Overseer RX-I for being a solidly constructed and sturdy case.\u00a0 It feels solid and it is quite heavy at about 23 pounds when completely empty.<\/p>\n<p>Thermaltake Overseer RX-I continues Thermaltake&#8217;s tradition of quality enthusiast cases. We have been using\u00a0it for many months &#8211; switching hardware in and out many times &#8211; and it is a real pleasure compared with smaller cases. The inside of the case is very nicely painted black. The secret of a successful case is to have it large enough for most enthusiasts without making it overkill. The hard drive bays are fixed to the chassis and cannot be removed without a cutting tool; we miss the removable cage of the Element G. Perhaps one might want a second PSU inside the case as we would have liked. Technically there is already room for a second PSU on the floor of the case, but the cables make it too tight of a fit.<\/p>\n<p>The front has dust filters over the optical drive bays and over the front intake fan. At the top of the case there are filters, but at the back there are no dust filters as the air mostly moves out of the case. The metal mesh of the drive bay covers and the dust traps behind it do a superb job of trapping dust. Even the metal mesh is designed to keep your case interior dust-free.<\/p>\n<p>The Thermaltake\u00a0Overseer RX-I\u00a0comes with the standard internal connectors which are USB, headphone\/microphone inputs, and LED and switch connectors. There are the two\u00a0USB 3.0 headers which makes for some really fast transfers as well as the connector for an external USB 3.0 HDD\/SDD dock right on top of the case. You will also get the necessary screws and zip ties. It is mostly a \u201ctool free\u201d build although a Philips screw driver is always useful and probably necessary to loosen the thumbscrews. The panel is raised but completely plain.The motherboard tray is not removable but the large cutout makes it completely unnecessary for all of the usual situations. You can easily remove and replace a CPU in just a few minutes \u2013 without the irritating need to remove the motherboard just to remove a heatsink or to replace a CPU. There are no ready options for installing smaller fans on the back grille for more extreme cooling needs, but it is not necessary and small fans generally add to noise. To the left of the 140 mm fan is where the standard motherboard I\/O shield plate is installed.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31017\" title=\"chassis-open-side\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassis-open-side.jpg?resize=480%2C496\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassis-open-side.jpg?resize=480%2C496 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassis-open-side-290x300.jpg 290w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassis-open-side-990x1024.jpg 990w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the above picture, you can see that the rubber feel elevate it well above the floor.\u00a0\u00a0Inside the open case\u00a0there are\u00a0eight standard expansion slots. Both left and right side panels are secured with three black thumb screws each. The panels install into the chassis with ease and it is easy to slide the tabs into rails.\u00a0 Ideally, we prefer the doors of the Chaser MK-I as they swing as on hinges and are just more convenient.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31021\" title=\"chassi-topfront\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassi-topfront.jpg?resize=288%2C386\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassi-topfront.jpg?resize=288%2C386 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassi-topfront-223x300.jpg 223w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chassi-topfront-764x1024.jpg 764w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are two switches for power and for reset but there are no rotary knobs to adjust the Overseer RX-I&#8217;s fan&#8217;s rpm as there are with the Chaser MK-I. However, there is no disadvantage with noise as you are not likely to hear these case fans over any but the quietest video cards at idle.<\/p>\n<p>The front is constructed of plastic and metal mesh. With the front bezel removed, one can see through the front drive bays all the way to the back of the chassis. Also on this panel, you will find the on\/off button for the system\u2019s power and reset button.<\/p>\n<p>The power button is illuminated along with the &#8220;lightning&#8221; LED which illuminates off and on to its own mysterious beat. The top slot is used for a HDD or SSD that connects to the motherboard for convenient hot-swapping.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s install our hardware in the Thermaltake Overseer RX-I<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Inside the Overseer RX-I; Air vs Water--><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Installing the PSU and Hardware<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at our options for installing our power supply into the Thermaltake Overseer RX-I<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31029\" title=\"installMB-1\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/installMB-1.jpg?resize=480%2C427\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/installMB-1.jpg?resize=480%2C427 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/installMB-1-300x267.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The PSU can be installed fan up or fan down. Ideally it is installed as shown with the air being sucked through the PSU&#8217;s fan through the bottom\u00a0of the case and protected by dust screens\u00a0and blown out the back of the grille &#8211; independent of the case&#8217;s air flow.\u00a0 The picture above\u00a0shows the Overseer RX-I case with the <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=30448\">ECS Golden Series motherboard, RAM, and CPU<\/a> and installed in the case. Notice how much room there is for a CPU cooler!<\/p>\n<p>Thermaltake supplies\u00a0a removable metal mesh dust filter that is supplied for use with the power supply and built into the bottom of the case. Of course, if you use your PSU with the fan facing up, there is no need for a dust filter. If you install your PSU with the fan facing downward as in this case, the best place for a dust filter is naturally under the power supply, to protect it from clogging with dust as the fan will pull cool air (and dust) in from beneath the case.<\/p>\n<p>The alternative is to install the power supply unit \u201cupside down\u201d with the fan facing upward. The warm air from <em>inside<\/em> the case is now exhausted out the PSU\u2019s grille. One of the disadvantages with the fan facing up is that now you have to take extra care so as to not to drop a screw or other tiny object into the now open PSU. As a tip, cover your open PSU with a cloth when you are adding a video card, for example.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31028\" title=\"installMB\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/installMB.jpg?resize=480%2C360\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/installMB.jpg?resize=480%2C360 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/installMB-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Installing the motherboard is done by using the included spacers and screws. It should become apparent at this point, that full tower cases are very spacious if one is used to mid-towers and that now there is a lot more room to work with.<\/p>\n<p>Many PC builders install the CPU and CPU cooler first along with the RAM on the motherboard and then install it into the case. We are very glad for the Overseer&#8217;s thoughtfully placed cable management cutouts.<\/p>\n<p>The front bottom half of the case is taken up by a non-removable hard drive cage which can accommodate\u00a0five hard drives. The top area allows for 4 optical drives which are also secured with screws (supplied) or can just be clipped in.\u00a0 The tool-less design works really well and securely holds the drives without screws.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31032\" title=\"runw-noctua1\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/runw-noctua1.jpg?resize=480%2C465\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/runw-noctua1.jpg?resize=480%2C465 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/runw-noctua1-300x290.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Noctua NH-DH14 is very large cooler and there is plenty of room around it.\u00a0 The airflow through the cooler&#8217;s dual fin stack\u00a0moves in the traditional manner from\u00a0front to back.\u00a0 Outside cooling air is\u00a0pulled into the case by the front 200mm fan and exhausted\u00a0by the back and top fans.<\/p>\n<p>We were able to get our Core i7-3770K to 4.8GHz with our ECS motherboard and since then, we have reached 4.9GHz on air with our EVGA Z77 FTW motherboard.\u00a0 Watch for an evaluation later\u00a0this week of this amazing overclocking motherboard that has found a permanent home with Ivy Bridge in our Overseer RX-I case.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31036\" title=\"z77ftw\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/z77ftw.jpg?resize=480%2C348\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/z77ftw.jpg?resize=480%2C348 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/z77ftw-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The EVGA Z77 FTW is a &#8220;plus&#8221; sized ATX motherboard and it still easily fits inside our Overseer RX-I.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watercooling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We moved the DVD optical drive down two slots to accommodate the\u00a0Water2.0 Pro&#8217;s\u00a0liquid cooler&#8217;s radiator and two fans. The air is drawn in from above the case and passes through the radiator to be exhausted back into the case but the heat is easily removed by the 200 mm fan on top and the 140 mm fan at the back of the case. An alternative is to place the radiator where the back exhaust fan is now.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31034\" title=\"Water2.0-pro\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Water2.0-pro.jpg?resize=360%2C251\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Water2.0-pro.jpg?resize=360%2C251 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Water2.0-pro-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To fit\u00a0Thermaltake&#8217;s own\u00a0liquid CPU cooler, we had to drill out threads so that\u00a0four screws could pass through to\u00a0affix directly to the radiator.\u00a0 It is the same thing that we had to do with our Chaser MK-I case for the AMD FX Liquid Cooler.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/WC-top.jpg?resize=307%2C230\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, this\u00a0Overseer case has so much room, it is easy to place just about any hardware inside and install it relatively easily because your fingers are never cramped.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Filters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How effective are they? Well, this image of the filter over the front intake fan was taken only after a few weeks of use. It&#8217;s definitely better to clean the dust trapped in the filter where it is easily removed and cleaned rather than stuck inside your precious hardware where it is difficult to remove and where it builds up\u00a0over time to\u00a0cause thermal issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/FILTER.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31199\" title=\"FILTER\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/FILTER.jpg?resize=384%2C261\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/FILTER.jpg?resize=384%2C261 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/FILTER-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s head for our conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Hardware Installation and Filters--><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: Conclusion--><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Final verdict<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After months of living with the Thermaltake Overseer RX-I, we like<em> <\/em> it for its looks and we appreciate it for its ability to keep our components cool. We love this case for its ease of installing and removing hardware.\u00a0 Best of all, we like the top hard drive dock for its incredible convenience and we would find it difficult now\u00a0to use a case without this feature. In addition, using Ivy Bridge&#8217;s Z77 platform, the two external USB 3.0 ports noticeably speed up transferring data over using USB 2.0.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s sum up the many positives verses\u00a0any negatives:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Positive:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The HDD dock is awesome for its convenience. We would suggest that Thermaltake add a second one if possible.<\/li>\n<li>Good looks. It&#8217;s also ideal for a gamer that needs a full-size tower.<\/li>\n<li>Excellent\u00a0cooling performance with 3 stock fans that are very quiet<\/li>\n<li>Well-managed spacious interior.<\/li>\n<li>Excellent cable management system with intelligent cutouts for easy CPU removal and installation<\/li>\n<li>Easy customization for adding additional cooling fans or for watercooling<\/li>\n<li>Tool-free design and user friendly<\/li>\n<li>Dust filters are included for every space that counts and the case is designed to keep dust out<\/li>\n<li>Three year warranty!<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s on sale at Newegg for $115 after $15 mail-in-rebate with free shipping!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Negatives:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No negatives.\u00a0 We would like the doors to swing out instead of slide if we had a choice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our conclusion is that the Overseer RX-I is a great enthusiast stock full tower case that allows the flexibility to cool as you choose. The Thermaltake Overseer RX-I is a quality and relatively inexpensive full tower case for users who want great looks, style and excellent cooling including watercooling options.\u00a0 The Overseer RX-I\u00a0is subjectively a better looking case than the Chaser MK-I and it provides great value by leaving off\u00a0a few\u00a0features that most gamers will not miss.<\/p>\n<p>Gamers will particularly like this case. You need not buy any extra fans or do any customization unless you are have extreme cooling needs. Best of all, Thermaltake has designed the Overseer RX-I with plenty of room to spare.\u00a0 Using the Overseer meant\u00a0easy and fun builds with large components\u00a0and it is a pleasure to move even oversized hardware into and out of this case.\u00a0 However, because of its large size and bulk, we would not necessarily recommend this case for\u00a0taking regularly to\u00a0LAN parties.<\/p>\n<p>The Overseer RX-I deserves our &#8220;Editor&#8217;s Choice&#8221; award at the very least\u00a0because we love Thermaltake&#8217;s hard drive dock! It is that convenient and it saves a lot of time.\u00a0 And it deserves ABT&#8217;s Editor&#8217;s Choice because it can keep even the hottest of enthusiast systems running cool and in style.
