That is to say, your Eye!\u201d<\/em> <strong>\u2013 LaBoeuf, \u201c<em>True Grit<\/em>,\u201d Paramount (2010)<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Over the holidays, we decided to listen to some nice restful music, so we dusted off a bunch of old 78s, scrounged up a workable needle and listened to <em>The Doors,<\/em> <em>Grateful Dead<\/em> and some early <em>Stones<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>That was some good stuff!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So good, our son even came in to listen and everything was going great until he innocently asked who Jim Morrison was.<\/p>\n<p>Come on kid, we\u2019re only a boomer, not an ancient.<\/p>\n<p>It made us think that boomer, boomer+ is not only good but man there are a lot of us.\u00a0 To be precise, there are about 2 billion on the planet and more than 120 million in the U.S. alone.\u00a0 That\u2019s roughly one-third of the buying public.<\/p>\n<p>So why is marketing rushing to attract our kid\u2026he still gets most of his money by asking us!<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when he admits like Rooster, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>I might know him.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Sure, we know we\u2019re aging; but there\u2019s no way we\u2019re going to get old.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Changing Timeline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We plan to retire, but certainly not on the same schedule as our parents and grandparents.\u00a0 We\u2019ll do it when we get really old\u2026you know 70, 75.<\/p>\n<p>Back when we were growing up, we used to say, <em>\u201cDon\u2019t trust anyone over 30.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s <em>\u201cdon\u2019t trust anyone under 40.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>O.K., maybe our kids\u2026just maybe.\u00a0 But that\u2019s only when we\u2019re having \u201cissues\u201d with our smartphone or tablet.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31040\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-23.jpg?resize=502%2C310\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-23.jpg?resize=502%2C310 628w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-23-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Moving On (line) \u2013 <\/strong><em>Baby boomers are taking hold of and using technology nearly 20 times faster than earlier generations.\u00a0 They have their mobile devices, their online services and they\u2019re not afraid to use them. <\/em>\u00a0<strong>Source \u2013 Accenture<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just don\u2019t forget who bought the devices at our house.<\/p>\n<p>According to a study by JWT BOOM, boomers account for 70 percent of the U.S. net worth, controlling more than $9T.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next 15 years, the 50-64 age population will grow by 50 percent and 65+ers will grow by 3 percent; while the combined Gen X\/Y population will only grow a lousy 3 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, that\u2019s attitude kid\u2026<strong><em>and buying power!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While product\/service marketers see their big potential in the young, hip Accenture found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Baby Boomers are embracing consumer technology applications nearly 20 times faster\u00a0\u00a0 than the younger generation<\/li>\n<li>Generation Y&#8217;s cravings for consumer technology applications are leveling off<\/li>\n<li>Boomers increased their rate of reading blogs and listening to podcasts by 67 percent year-over-year &#8211; nearly 80 times faster than Gen Y (1 percent)<\/li>\n<li>Boomers posted a 59 percent increase in use of social networking sites, more than 30 times faster than Gen Y (2 percent)<\/li>\n<li>Boomers increased watching\/posting videos on the Internet by 35 percent, while Gen Y usage decreased slightly (-2 percent)<\/li>\n<li>Boomers accelerated playing video games on the go via mobile devices by 52 percent, 20 times faster than Gen Y (2 percent)<\/li>\n<li>Boomers growth rate in listening to music on an iPod or other portable music player was 49 percent, more than four times faster than Gen Y (12 percent)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So despite what Zuck says, boomers do go online and what they do on what device matters\u2026<strong><em>a lot<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As Rooster observed, <em>\u201cThat didn&#8217;t pan out.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It suggest that the boomers are climbing aboard this bandwagon on all fronts to add life-enriching experiences as well as remain intellectually and technologically literate, versatile and job-skill competitive.<\/p>\n<p>According to Pew Internet and American Life project, more older Americans are going online than ever.<\/p>\n<p>Social Networking Site Use by Online Adults<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31041\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-33.jpg?resize=538%2C371\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-33.jpg?resize=538%2C371 538w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-33-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 538px) 100vw, 538px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Socializing \u2013 <\/strong><em>Baby boomers not only go online, they make increasing use of social media to reach out, connect to friends, family, and business associates.\u00a0 The Web enables them to stay abreast of the rapid changes in technology to remain current.<\/em>\u00a0 <strong>Source:\u00a0 Pew Research Center<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Surprisingly, the largest jump in usage was in the age 70 and older group.\u00a0 Internet penetration among people 70-74 was 19 percentage points and 75+ was 10 points \u2013 not huge, but not bad.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, the percentage of users age 25 to 29 held steady during those years at 85 percent.<\/p>\n<p>While fewer older folks were online than their younger counterparts, people ages 55+ accounted for nearly one-third of the Web audience and typically spent more time online than younger adults.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Online Presence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A study by ExactTarget shows that boomers are not only online, but own a formidable presence.<\/p>\n<p>Over 72 percent access the Net over broadband from their home (more than the national average across all age groups).\u00a0 They just do different things \u2013 they might say more meaningful things \u2013 online.<\/p>\n<p>Rooster simply said, <em>\u201cI have prior business.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31042\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-43.jpg?resize=502%2C350\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-43.jpg?resize=502%2C350 628w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-43-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>They\u2019re Everywhere \u2013 <\/strong><em>Boomers are completely different from their parents and grandparents.\u00a0 They\u2019ve taken to the online world in record numbers.\u00a0 True, they do probably spend more time checking health\/wellness information; but even there, much of it is also for their families.<\/em>\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 ThirdAge, JWT Boom<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They\u2019re doing research, finding resources, gaining knowledge:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 92% spend their time online seeking information<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 82% research health info for themselves, their family<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 95% stay in touch with friends, family<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 86% research products they purchase offline<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 73% shop online<\/p>\n<p>Pew and Construction Crew found that older web users are quickly embracing social networks.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31043\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-53.jpg?resize=398%2C313\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-53.jpg?resize=398%2C313 398w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-53-300x235.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 398px) 100vw, 398px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>\u00a0<strong>Run Kid \u2013 <\/strong><em>Granted, not many boomers post wet t-shirt party or wasted evening photos; but they are still very active on social sites.\u00a0 Social media enables people of all generations to stay in touch and improve\/expand their relationships, experience.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Source: Continuum<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Usage among boomers plus has nearly doubled with Facebook and LinkedIn being the main beneficiaries of the mature traffic and usage doubling during the past year.<\/p>\n<p>With even seniors catching the wave of social networking, the mass appeal is undeniable for marketers. \u00a0Facebook announced its 800 millionth user mid-last year.<\/p>\n<p>Pew offered three reasons for social networking\u2019s appeal to older adults:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They want to reconnect with people from their past<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As a gathering place for multiple generations, social networks are useful to parents for learning about the lives of their children and grandchildren<\/p>\n<p>The challenge for Facebook is that it tries to be everything to everyone, so it could easily suffer the same abandonment as MySpace.<\/p>\n<p>Referring to MySpace, Mattie Rose said, <em>\u201cI would not recognize the soles of his feet.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The use of mobile multimedia services (entertainment) is growing across all age groups and recent consumer surveys found that boomers aren\u2019t being left behind.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31044\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-63.jpg?resize=404%2C319\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-63.jpg?resize=404%2C319 404w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-63-300x236.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 404px) 100vw, 404px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0<strong>On-the-Go Hello \u2013 <\/strong><em>While boomers may do less texting than younger mobile device users, they do use their feature\/smartphones for a wide range of communications activities.\u00a0 Those who text frequently usually take to it because of their children and grandchildren.<\/em>\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 eMarketer<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In a recent Accenture survey they found:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Baby boomers (people ages 45 and up) are swiftly adopting such Gen-Y habits as playing videogames on the go and listening to music on an MP3 player, through boomers are still far behind Gen Y in actual usage<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Baby boomers are also adopting new non-mobile technologies at a faster pace than Gen Y, although they\u2019re still way behind. The endeavors include blog reading, tapping into social-networking sites and watching Internet videos<\/p>\n<p>Late last year, the research firm found that feature\/smartphones were primarily used as a way to communicate by voice, text, email.<\/p>\n<p>Across all age groups 54 percent didn\u2019t want\/need video and video streaming to their phone and 14 percent called the service too expensive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Going Mobile<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, both Accenture and ExactTarget found the use of mobile services were growing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31045\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-73.jpg?resize=504%2C298\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-73.jpg?resize=504%2C298 504w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-73-300x177.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Mobile Contact \u2013 <\/strong><em>When it comes to non-call communications for boomers, email leads the list of options followed by IMs and texting.\u00a0 RSS feed subscription isn\u2019t a \u201cgotta have\u201d solution for almost everyone.<\/em>\u00a0 <strong>Source:\u00a0 ExactTarget<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite the lack of interest in wireless multimedia services, Accenture found increased adoption rates:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the percentage of people watching video on a mobile phone \u2013 across all age groups &#8211; rose from 12 percent, to 14 percent<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the percentage of people using cellphones to access Web services rose from 8 to 23 percent<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 about a third indicated Web browsing was one of their top three mobile applications<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 almost 25 percent indicated listening to music on their mobile phone was a top-three application<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Grown Gamer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not realizing that we grew up with Atari, our son was surprised to hear that we had adopted his habit of playing videogames on-the-go and would even listen to music on-the- go (despite the fact that fidelity was lost when we went from platters to CDs to MP3):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Boomers playing video games on their cellphones grew to 13 percent from 9 percent &#8212; Yes, percentage for 18-24 year olds grew from one \u2013 45 percent; but<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Boomers who listen to music on mobile devices increased to 31 percent from 21 percent (Gen Yers from 68 to 76 percent<\/p>\n<p>Still, in overall online endeavors, boomers were increasing their use of all technologies faster than Gen Yers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31046\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-82.jpg?resize=432%2C243\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-82.jpg?resize=432%2C243 432w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-82-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Technology for All \u2013 <\/strong><em>At home or on-the-go,\u00a0 nearly every generation is focused on staying current, staying involved.\u00a0 Acceptance, understanding, usage is across all generations and some analysts have reached the conclusion that technology has actually brought the generations closer together. <\/em><strong>Source: comScore<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">There are probably several reasons for this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Boomers say they feel younger than their chronological age<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 People tend to live longer (hence one of the reasons the global population topped 7 billion last year)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Boomers are tending to stay in the workforce longer than their grandparents, parents<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They want\/need to communicate with their kids who are connected 24&#215;7<sup>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31047\" title=\"Untitled-9\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-9.jpg?resize=373%2C274\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-9.jpg?resize=373%2C274 373w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Untitled-9-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 373px) 100vw, 373px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Ganging Up \u2013 <\/strong><em>When you put boomers, boomers plus and millennials together you have a combination that can take on and dominate the generations in between.\u00a0 Youth\/speed combined with experience\/cunning is a tough combination to beat.<\/em>\u00a0 <strong>Image Source &#8211;
